I am a RN for past 27 years. 50 yr old single women. Please please continue this convo. Please have part 3 and 4 and 5. Thank you, Thank you for all you do! If you can get all the nurses educated and feeling better you will have an army of millions that can help others.
I was so tired of being blown off by doctors or have them laugh and say “ yeah, that’s menopause” as I was near tears. The pain, the weird symptoms like vertigo, unbelievable weight gain despite exercising and eating right, hot flashes every 20 minutes, no sleep and finally depression. I got no help and finally went to a nurse clinician who specializes in menopause and NOW I finally feel back to myself. If this was a man’s thing, there would be a pill by now.
@@Toryhol I did a Dutch test which shows way more than blood work. I put on HRT, which I had tried through doctor but I didn’t like so instead of trying different things my doc just took me off of them. My NP was able to add and adjust depending on symptoms. I was also given Synthroid. I had all the symptoms of a thyroid problems for about 20 years, but my doctor kept saying my levels were fine. As soon as I was on it, my pain went away, my hair grew back, I lost weight and I feel amazing. My doctor, when I see her, still wonders why I’m on it but I’m like “it’s helping. That’s why”. There are so many things with the thyroid that just doesn’t show up on standard tests. They have to look further if you still have symptoms and they don’t unless you “get bitchy”. Or “assertive” in terms of when men act this way.
Years ago when I was in my 30s, they tried to put me on Synthroid. I chose not to take it because you have to be on it for the rest of your life. Plus, I thought that it made you gain weight? Did you try the pellets? What kind of HRT are you wan? Is it a pill?@@ItsMsSue2U7154
Sadly partners( men) of all women I know in my life including my own husband do not know about this and also not want to know about this.A big need to spread awareness among men to acknowledge this so that they can allow themselves to become supportive companions!!
Mel - as a 47 year old woman this subject is top of mind for me. As I have walked thru it and learned it's just SHOCKING that women are not even treated like we're part of society. In the 1800s we were witches. In the 1900s we were hysterical. In the 2000s it's a mental health crisis. None of this is true. We're misunderstood, misdiagnosed, and mostly walking through this blindly. I remember asking my mom, and other older women - is this normal? When did it start? How long did it last? But now that I've been in it for a decade it's absolutely shocking. It's so hard to trust doctors because we're minimized and labeled as crazy, when really we're just full of hormones. Thank you so much for doing this important episode. More please.
yah, my doc told me that my frozen shoulder, brain fog, my itchy skin are random symptoms that come with old age and I need to live with them. Except for the hot flashes I was complaining about, he never recognized the other symptoms as being related to menopause. I'm so sick of how most male doctors dismiss menopause symptoms in women, so after hearing this video, I decided to change my male doctor with a female doctor who will be more sympathetic for what i'm going through. Men cannot relate at all to women's bodies. thank you Mel for interviewing these amazing women doctors, please bring more female doctors on your pod to talk about women health issues to educate all of us women. Our health issues have been IGNORED by the traditional medical system for too long because it only catered to men's health for the most part of the modern medicine.
Wanna know a crazy story? I saw a gynecologist at around age 35, asked her to test my hormone levels due to a suspected imbalance, and she said she refused to do so since I was not premenopausal. I found this utterly appalling! Don’t I have every right to do this if I am willing to pay for it!?!? You’re awesome, Mel! And you look amazing!
Yes it happened to me .I felt awful with this response he was old men gynecologist but then younger female gynecologist told you are young for that but I ‘m on my perimenopause
Same exact thing happened to me and guess what?? I WAS going through my changes and went through menapause at 41 yr of. age. After arguing with different doctors and so on, I was finally diagnosed at 43 and prescribed with HRT. We need to change this mentality and embrace women as we are.
Same thing for me. They flat refused when i was starting with perimenopouse, i am 54 now in menopause and they still refuse to do tests. I also have nodule in my toroid and have to check it up. Bug they do it nt want to do tests for tiroide hormon either. just the base. No t3, no t4... Nothing further. Only if THS is abnormal (whatever that means) ... So agrivating. We are paying for health insurance and yet they don't allows us to use when we needed. The doctor told me those tests are not important, i am menopausal women and tfats it. She, yes a woman doctor and genetsl practicioner, gave me some estrogen hrt on which i had side effects within a month, and had to stop it. And no follow up no check up. I cant even have a gynecologists visit unless she gives referal, and that is again if she thinks something is abnormal 😢. I live in Montreal, Canada. We used to have pretty good health system, now!!! Ever since damn covid the whole system has gone to hell.... 🤬🤬🤬...
Well this is great information! If I want to work really hard at feeling ALMOST as good as my husband does, all I have to do is watch what I'm eating, when I eat it, and remember the protein! Get a bedtime routine and stick to it, get an exercise routine and stick to it - lift more weights! Not too much cardio! Unless yes more cardio! Am I thinking about my exercise routine? Well then I'm wasting valuable time that I could be using to pay more attention to what I eat! I should probably be more social, but I still need to be thinking about what I eat and definitely no coffee or alcohol, never mind that those restrictions will cut out a lot of social opportunities! That's ok, maybe I can go for walks with friends - but OMG WHAT ABOUT WATER? DID I DRINK ENOUGH WATER? And the supplements! I have to worry about the supplements! I should probably relax more. But not too much! Otherwise I'm forgetting something crucial about one of my multiple routines that I can't interrupt! But I'd better relax, otherwise how am I going to get in the mood for romance? A drink?? That's the worst thing to do, especially within a certain number of hours before bedtime! Wait, what am I forgetting? I'm forgetting something...
Thank you Mel and Dr Amy. Aging is a constant fight. No alcohol! Limited caffeine and sugar. I'll be 74 next month. I've been thru it all and it's (almost) hell. Just realized recently from listening to podcasts I'm probably on the spectrum also. I'm still fighting the good fight with some prescription estrogen, dhea and over the counter bioidenticle progesterone. And good vitamins. Lots of gardening for exercise. I no longer have my horse so will have to figure out what to do in place of scooping poop and moving haybales. Yes WTF Mel 😆 Just keep fighting it and smile! Thank you!
Dear Mel, thank you a lot for this episode. Here in Germany, the topic of menopause and bioidentical hormones has been going on for a few years now. Dr. Sheila de Liz is a gynecologist who didn't find anything on the subject herself either and went out and did some research. Because of her and her book "Women on fire", I am in the fortunate position of finally being able to embrace and replenish my body. I get the bioidentical hormones estrogen (as a cream, daily) and progesterone (as a capsule, daily) on health insurance prescription and testosterone (as a cream, daily) I still have to pay for myself after getting a private prescription. There is still a lot to be done to get women back into hormonal balance. Btw, there are species of whales that enter menopause. The knowledge is not very common. On the net I read this info that I would like to quote here: "Besides humans, however, there are four species of whales for which nature has provided a kind of menopause: orcas (killer whales), belugas, narwhals and short-finned pilot whales. Orcas, for example, have their last baby around age 35 to 50, but have a life expectancy of about 60 to 80 years. Recent studies found evidence that the fertility phase of Asian elephant females also ends relatively early in life. Common to all these species is that they live in larger family groups. The older females contribute to species preservation by caring for the offspring of the younger ones." Once again a thousand thanks for you, your family and your work. Best regards Martina
Yes!!!! We need to normalize hormone testing throughout life, so you have a baseline measurement to work from. Testing needs improvement. Improve the testing. Black & white proof . Not craziness. Women are struggling so hard with this everywhere. Kudos, Mel! Shout it from the rooftops!
You're so right! When I was talking to my doctor about HRT for after my scheduled Hysterectomy: I said please check my hormone levels now, because I feel awesome right NOW!!! But he said they're unable to replicate it... 😢
This was fantastic! I'm actually pissed off that we aren't taught this stuff. I'm 49 years old and I learned so much!!! Thank you, Mel. So glad I found you.
THANK YOU!!! At 62 I’ve been doing hormone therapy and it’s a game changer! The hard part is finding a provider to get it from and good information. My regular Dr wouldn’t touch it. It’s sad that, once again, women are marginalized as not important. Especially older women. I hope the medical professionals get better at helping us!
I struggled as well. Doctors just wanted to say I was depressed and that gaining 30 pounds in six months is normal when you age. It took years to finally find someone who would help. But it’s all out of pocket. In Los Angeles I pay $600 every 3 months. 🥴
I went to a doctor. Having terrible hot flashes. She basically told me to just stick it out. 😡It pisses me off. All the time and research spent on Viagra. This society made sure men can still get it up. But we just gotta ride it out. Da fuq! My ears were itching last night!
Oh you betcha.Yup,I hear you,,turn that anger into art,,or music or something I need to..I had to laugh when heard there was a german band who have a song called men are pigs.
Thank you for this! I read (listened to) the book Estrogen Matters and then got on HRT, my hot flashes stopped after about a week to 10 days, after a couple of weeks I started sleeping at least 7 hours every night, now if I could just lose weight I’d be normal again. After listening to these podcasts and reading that book I feel like I have enough knowledge to correct the misinformation. And now I feel like I can also get rid of this fat, I had lost hope of ever getting back to a normal weight.
What I love most is Mel’s utter transparency about her experience of menopause. The suggestions by Amy are useful esp about sleep. At age 61 and 11 years into meno life I have also appreciate the reminder that this is normal and not an illness to be medicated away.
I spent over 10 years getting cycled through anxiety and depression meds to “help me sleep”. I started taking progesterone and sleeping through the night and no longer need these crazy meds that never worked. It jacked up my life insurance rates to the point where they were higher than my older, alcoholic now ex husband’s rates. It’s been a harsh journey of discrimination and oppression, that is bitterly sad and has wasted so much of my time and almost broke my spirit many times.
Mel, please host more guests on this topic. PLEASE! I am trying to help myself and regulate hormones naturally I got too early in premenopause 🤒 this was so helpful, very nice explanation. What to talk about in future? Maybe more detailed on HOW To exercise with hormonal disbalance, how to intermittent fast with it, how our lifestyle should look like (because there are so many trendy lifestyles again, mostly coming from men) how to help ourselves with mental symptoms? Like a foggy brain, forgetness, mood swings... Also I have an ADHD so I think it got crazy from the age 30 because of hormonal changes. Another topic to explore
Just a note about pellet therapy- the hormones are said to be released steadily as the body needs it- not just surged through all at once. This is supposed to be the benefit of pellets- that your body uses it as needed. Mel, I am so glad to hear you say you have the sad symptoms as I do! The doctors were the worst when I first went into menopause! They said it was depression. I just wasn’t sleeping anymore 😢 Such a great show!! So needed.
What a great episode! Loved them. I am 52 & I found eating once a day really helps. I switched my anti depressant for Kratom which is a plant. I do an estrogen cream 3-4 days a week. I had a spell of hot flashes when I was 49-50 but absolutely no complaints now & weigh 115. Light moving throughout the day. Throw in some free weights & squats. Do mini sessions. I’ll do (3) sets of 15 every day - takes 2 min. Hope that helps!
Good comment. I'm 67 considering going on antidepressant because I'm not pulling out of depression for years. I did HRT at 50 yrs old no regrets it was great. A little pricey. My son started using kratom to get off pain meds due to a bad accident. The problem is him now having seizures. His brother & I read up on kratom & I almost started due to extreme fatigue & looking for energy but I just never did. Well now he is having full blown seizures & I'm at a loss. He doesn't live that close & they are all adults so...there is that.
And I meant to ask what form do you buy the kratom. I think it can be smoked used in tea coffee? Are there capsules? And the estrogen you said is creme from health food store? Or compound pharmacy? On HRT I did the pellets by physician but took progesterone sublingual from compound pharmacy. I didn't think it was a big deal so one time I ran out & didn't refill. Well I started bleeding at work. I think I saw him following day & he said "you absolutely can't just go off like that" I went back on the progesterone & it stopped the bleeding.
Wish I would’ve had this information in 2020 when I thought I was going crazy! Turns out I had zero estrogen and at 54 was in full-blown menopause. Not a clue that not only was that the culprit of weight gain, but eczema, which I never had, joint pain all over my body, night sweats, constant hot flashes, crying for no reason, no energy, hair loss, etc etc. And half of the treatments-the ones that REALLY work-are not covered by insurance!!! Not only is it ridiculous women were not included in medical studies, but then insurance doesn’t recognize half of our symptoms/treatments🤬
@@dorotawalas1186When I was 51 or 52 I asked my GP for a blood test because I believed I was going through menopause. He refused and said you're to young, 😳. I was absolutely floored, some GP's just brush women off, they dont want to discuss it, 🤷♀️. Maybe that's what's happened to this lady - it's wrong! Bundles of health and happiness to you, 🩷🌷🐨🦘.
Love the way Dr. Amy breaks things down. Such an important episode Mel! I'm sixty-seven now and postmenopausal but man did I go through the doctor trying to put me on antidepressants and acting mystified when I said I felt foggy, like I was a silly woman. Still upsetting to think about. He eventually switched me to a woman doctor saying we weren't a good fit. The woman doctor was better, but at that time the lack of knowledge was even worse.
@@dorotawalas1186 It was around 2005 in the US. It is crazy to think about still. And my head is still spinning over what Dr. Amy said about women's health not even being studied until recently. Doctors here would talk about menopause, they just had this grin-and-bare-it-attitude. Same with aging. Like there is nothing you can do to improve your quality of life. It's better now, but still not enough.
Aha Moment! I'm 64. When I started symptoms (along with previous knee and hip injuries) my 'male' dr first said I had 'Mother's Syndrome' ! I couldn't believe he said that. Later he offered me an antidepressant as well which I declined. 7 years later, after my hip replacement at age 50, I fired my long time Dr and got a female Dr. Menopause started age 51 yrs. I am so thankful for the attentive new Dr who, along with a gynocologist referral, also found the abnormality with my Thyroid - which my male Dr would not do any testing even though there is a family history of thyroid cancer. GEE I guess I needed to get out this Rant! My msg that I share, You know your body best. You have every right to a second opinion. The squeaky wheel really does get the grease... Thanks again for this podcast with Dr Amy's great explanations! 👍
I love Mel! The impact of perimenopause/menopause is a significant topic that needs to be normalized and embraced… not only by society but by the medical profession itself. It is long overdue, since the debacle back in 2003 with the WHI study. However, this needs to be more than just a one hour convo which barely scratches the surface. Avrum Bluming, a renowned oncologist, and Carol Tavris, a social psychologist, published “Estrogen Matters” which should be required reading by all women and their gynecologists. Carol or Avrum would be excellent guest future guests. Please have another episode on this topic- or leave it for the medical podcasters. It deserves more discussion.
So what about those of us that are close to 70 and still going through menopause? I do it all, eat right, lift weights, walk, play Pickleball etc. and have been going through this crap even with BHRT since I was 45. I don't understand with all that is available why we don't have better answers. I'll keep working out and do everything I can to be the best I can be. I just wish my body would cooperate. Thank you for an informative show, I just ordered Dr Amy's book hoping maybe it will continue where this left off.
I’m right there with you! What can we do?! I’m 60, all dried up. People suggest more lube or a special lube. No! That doesn’t help the feeling of a knife being put up there when my husband and I….yeah!
As someone who THINKS she’s post menopause I feel the medical community isn’t looking into our issues. While Dr. Amy’s episode was highly informative for peri and menopausal women but it was a let down for those of us on the other side. My power surges might be much less and my periods a thing of the past; but I still feel off both physically and mentally. As she said there aren’t many good doctors to consult, especially if you don’t live near a big city.
I hear you, it's brutal! Sadly, women are taking their lives due to peri/menopause and post menopause! I'm 57 and post menopause and I have never felt so awful in all my life ... I can barely get out of bed, it's horrendous!!! Menopause deserves more research from medical professionals/scientists!!! Thinking of you and sending you much love and support, xx 🩷🌷🐨🦘.
Hi Mel I felt like you could do with a hug. The frustration around this subject is huge. I am 42 and l only figured out that there is something like PMS a couple of weeks ago. And l am highly educated and feel super pissed of. This needs to be shared, we need to educate the educators! And as a mother we must talk and support our daughters on this topic. Tears rolling over my cheeks as l am writing this. Thanks Amy rocks, we need doctors like this who have a real understanding ❤❤
Thank you! I went to my doctor and complained about every symptom you bring up and her response was to go to weight watchers. I thought it was so unhelpful and insensitive and shocked me. This video helped me to understand all of it so much better. She did at least put me on HRT which I hope will help, but at least I now have some other actionable suggestions to go with it.
Remove as many refined carbs & sugars from your diet as possible. My friend & I finally lost 10lbs each on Keto in a very short time! Its always been sugar, not FAT! FATS are essential for your brain function and will give more satiety. So eat BUTTER, AVOCADOS, Chicken with skin, BACON etc etc ENJOY YOUR LIFE!
I was told the same thing. It happens with age. Thank goodness women are starting to advocate for themselves. And then sharing their findings! Thank you, Mel for a great show.
I am 36 and I recently learned that the first day you start bleeding is not the first day of your period - what the ****. The first part is the spotting before your period; seriously?! I always thought whenever I could ruin my sheets, I was on my period. Unbelievable. Recently, I had a pregnancy complication and the number of times I was asked the unquantifiable question - “how much are you bleeding?”- without the language to answer in a shared language. They’d say is it heavy, light, spotting, which is all completely subjective. I’m angry at the lack of discussion around these topics amongst people in general, but especially between teachers/doctors/parents and children.
I too have been going through menopause for the last 5 years. I got tired of all the negatives so I had an RTT session and changed my diet and workouts and my career it was so powerful. Now I help women do the same. Hot flashes are gone, building muscle, the loose skin is tightening and I have lots of energy again. Your mind is brilliant and can seriously help balance you no matter what stage of menopause your going through. Love Dr. Amy! So much Great information and thank you for sharing. I learned a few new things about hormone replacement and why I will not do it and share this with my women so they can decide for themselves but be educated on it! Such great information and us women deserve better.
Absolutely what I've been needing to hear to help myself naturally with this journey. I'm 64, in Endrochrinologist care, 4 yrs, monitoring my thyroid which also involves watching hormone levels. 'She' is fabulous and, per my questions, is not pushing hormone replacement as my levels still in normal ranges. This info today is the motivation I need for self care. Thank you so much!
This talk is LONG overdue. Doctors tend to say “that’s just menopause” but have no answers except for HRT and they know so little about it. The depression and anxiety are crippling for some. Thank you for bringing this to light! ❤️
Great conversation! Heavy lifting is where it’s at during and post menopause - skip the cardio unless it’s fun and relaxing, but it’s not going to change our bodies.
@@calista1280 I’ve been clean keto since 2009 then carnivore since Oct 2021 (dealt a terrible genetic autoimmune hand and these work for keeping me well). I’m at my perfect weight with good body comp, but I’ve recently added some carbs back in and I’m feeling great. I think I need some carbs these days.
Yes, BUT cardio helps heart and lung health. Not losing a lot of weight on cardio isn’t a reason to stop it. Also, do cardio if that’s all you can do on certain days. It’s absolutely better than nothing.
@@triple_sec0 at 63, I hike and walk the big hills. I do heavy lifting circuits. I get my movement in. I don’t do it if it’s not fun and relaxing. No more typical chronic cardio for me. I don’t need to lose weight.
Thank God! The Big M! This is the first podcast that gave any information on this! It’s not the dark ages! This was great and very informative and interesting I’ve been itching for years! Sleep is a total disaster!🥰❤️😍😃 Thanks Mel and doc! She is so knowledgeable and helpful. Most Eye opening!
Dr. Amy needs her own show! I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease years ago and have tried to understand it so I can be as healthy as possible. I learned more about my thyroid from Dr. Amy speaking about it for the short time she did then all the questions I’ve asked my Dr. and all the reading on it I’ve done.
Yes! WTF is going on and what are we doing about it? Mel - if anyone can find the answer and get us the help we need it to you! You’re my go to for my daily life challenges and motivation
And fun tidbit ADHD women are highly affected by hormones! That is one of the reasons the teen years can be so rough. Women with ADHD are usually more prone to postpartum depression, PMDD, and things start to fall apart or they think they have dementia or are loosing their mind as they approach menopause as they hormones drop off. Linda Roggli is a great resource for women with ADHD and is particularly interested in hormonal factors. May be a good person to put on your list Mel or to chat with in general. I think you would enjoy her.
I would love to see Dr. Amy talk about how these hormonal changes can affect men and women with anxiety. Can hormone replacement help men with anxiety? Are these changes responsible for teens in puberty who experience depression and anxiety? These are areas that doctors do not address, but instead just hand out pills as band aids for these extreme feelings.
Breadbasket-Be-Gone! Dr. Amy hit the nail on the head - Strength Training is a necessary component before, during and after menopause. I got your back, Mel......and your biceps, glutes, abs! I have been learning about this life transistion for many years through books, podcasts, discussions with peers, doctors, etc. Hormones are very complex and difficult to really understand. Dr. Amy - thank you for breaking them down and putting it into layman's terms! I love your analogies and will use your very clever descriptions when helping wormen I work with. Y'all Rock!
This is wonderful. I love how she explained how hormones affect your mind and body. I had hormone testing months ago and they said I was perimenopausal with low progesterone at 48. They prescribed taking supplemental progesterone and eating 100 grams of protein daily but didn't explain why I needed all of this. I used to wake up before 4 AM and have high stress periodically. I felt like I was going crazy. Anyway, always love the Podcast and Dr. Amy. The best!
I am completly backwards when it comes to sleep times, being rested , and best time for working out. If Im up first thing in the morning , say 6:30 and I go for a walk and tackle my day . Im exausted , dragging my body by lunch time. My panic attacks start up by evening that are completly under control if i sleep in in the mornings. Since i was a baby I have never been a morning person . I feel best when i go to bed late as thats when i have the most energy and sleep in until lunch time. Ive tried to correct this so many times as my daily return doesnt always allow me to sleep in like that and I always feel horrible all day. I wish i could be normal and sleep at night and wake up early . The earliest Im able to get to bed is 11:00 because of certain responsibilities that I cannot change. Im most rested on 10 hours of sleep.
Mel, I just discovered your show and I like you! I’m 57 and living my best life. I’m also doing the pellets and loving it. I went thru a couple years of deep research and got stuff figured out but it was SO frustrating due to the lack of info. We definitely need MORE info & resources!!! This should not be such a hidden topic. Keep up the good work 😊
Thanks so much for sharing this episode such important information that we should have been taught early in life, but nothing like the present though!! This episode needs to go viral & be sent to every doctor & medical community from schools to boards as I feel like doctors don’t know swat about women & our monthly cycles! The way she explains the process too is mind blowing 🤯& I can’t wait to share with every woman in my life❤
this is an awesome episode!! I requested to do blood work to see if I was going through perimenopause. I was asked why, why, why?? I had symptoms and after the blood test came back not normal, I was told, that it is "normal" not to have normal hormone levels (wth!). I had to find an outside hormonal place to do real test and help me with hormone imbalances. Bravo to our wonderful medical industry.
I had surgical menopause at 40 and started transdermal HRT. 23 years later I’m doing the same thing! Only options given are continue or stop. And my doctors don’t agree which I should do.
Thank you Mel! For this topic, I’m going thru the “M” & “H” right now, it’s actually a taboo topic in my culture, no one’s talks about it. I actually thought of starting a group chat about these topics and invite real Dr’s, we need more info about these topics.
A lot of this is information we've heard but Dr. Shah's explanations are the game changer. I make lasting changes when I can understand why. Thank you both for this excellent episode! Looking forward to future episodes and referencing this one frequently. thank you!!
Oh, my gosh! Thank you, Mel! This was so informative. I'm in my late 40s and experiencing many of the same symptoms as you. I am SO frustrated about what's happening to my brain and body, but it's compounded by the dearth of healthcare providers who actually care and/or have the knowledge about this stage of women's lives. I work at a major healthcare system that touts itself as one of the best in the country, but sadly its womens health providers are largely dismissive of treating peri symptoms with bHRT unless one is in menopause. Hopefully, this changes and our daughters and granddaughters won't have to confront the same B.S.
I am 41. I have done all the blood tests, all hormones levels, all thyroid testing, all insulin levels, they say everything is fine. I have had unexplained infertility for the last 10 years, i exercise regularly, lift heavy weights, eat decently, The only thing i have a small uterine fibroid and leptin resistance. I had to research was herbs to regulate my own hormones. Because they kept saying it was fine. No it was not fine at all. I had no energy. Outside of work. I am feeling better now. 1st phorm harmony has helped tremendously. Among other herbs. Thank you for this episode.
Very good info! I will be 55 in November and have been on HRT for about a year. It has taken a bit to get the right fit, of HRT for me, but it was easy with the online program I went with. I worked with a nurse practitioner and dr. I finally felt heard!! (After 2 dr’s telling me to my face, “Move more and eat less”) Finally have a better solution and I feel more like me again! Advocate for yourself!
This has been the BEST episode!! OMG , I have been so upset at my body change at age 60! I was doing all the things and killing myself to get my pre-menopause shape back. Thank you for explaining this in terms I understand and what I can do to help the symptoms of aging as a woman. Mel thank you for bringing this brilliant doctor to us!!! XXXOOO
Thank you for this podcast. I will listen to it a few more times to identify possible options for me, given I fall into the demographic that has little to no studies on what menopause looks like to me and what the treatment options are. My gyn listened to my symptoms and immediately recommended antidepressants. I've done enough research to understand that antidepressants are not a solution that is recommended without a clear hormonal understanding of what is going on with that particular patient.
Thanks! Thank you! Thank you! You are awesome! I'm so grateful you had this podcast. I am so tired of hearing all this information about my hormones just to sell me something. I needed a place where I could go to get true knowledge!
❤❤❤ this episode! Wished I could have heard it 20+ years ago when starting my menopause journey! Can't wait to buy Dr. Shah's books to learn more! Thank you Mel
Oh wait, I've been getting pellets for years and they are the best. This is the first time I have heard that testosterone pellets are not great. My dr. checks my levels every 6 months to make sure my levels are good. Honestly, the higher the testosterone in my system, the better I feel. I had a hard time getting hormone replacement from my gyno because of the breast and colon cancer history in my family. New studies show that they actually can help prevent cancer, and more doctors need to stop relying on that old study. Anyway, I love my HRT and my life, mood, and energy have so much improved. Love you Mel!
This episode is incredibly helpful. I didn’t even start with any menopausal symptoms until I was 57. The hot flashes, loss of muscle tone, sleeping issues and mental fogginess hit me like a tornado. I’m 61 now and still dealing with all of these issues…I am going to look into bio-identical HRT for sure.
This explains so much about my life. I'm upset but grateful that I have finally figured out what's been going on w me. This information has changed my life. Thank you so much ❤🌹🙂
Hi Mel! I had absolutely no help or information on menopause from anyone especially my Obgyn and family doctor I was so bad I ended up losing my marriage my family my mother passed away I lost my homestead I lost my friends or some of them “so called friends “ 😮 gained some weight and suffered through mental emotional sexual and physical abuse for aprox 30 yrs of my marriage, had 8 pregnancies, 5 living, a Down syndrome beautiful baby , two miscarriages, my one babyboy passed at 6 weeks before Christmas a few years back, and finally, a complete nervous breakdown when my body just couldn’t go on anymore…. Please Mel, Dr. Amy, I hope and pray this can help just one female, then it would help my ❤, Sincerely with love and respect to you both and ur “ Team Mel” ! Love your team Mel. Xo God Bless you all and your families. Linda, Pa
Thank you both this was so informative for us women. It's sad and not right that we are NOT taught this stuff to know what is going on when it happens. Sadly, they did not research it. Thank you, Dr Amy, for caring and researching for all of us, so we can learn and try to control it if we can.
As someone with ADHD a lot of these tips feel insurmountable, but I'm certainly going to try. This was so helpful and enlightening, Thank you for this!
Yes! I've been doing this for about a year now. That 10-day countdown prior to my cycle starting. Don't do s***. That's when I'm pulling out frozen meals from the freezer or picking up food for dinner. I know I don't have the capacity to take on extra crap on those 10 days prior. I also don't put anything like dentist appointments or anything on the books for those days.
Fantastic episode thankyou Mel and your wonderful Dr guest. I've been so educated and I will use the information going forward and intend to help educate my daughter's so they feel normal xx
This is a fascinating episode and I have self taught myself into what are the habits to make menopause be experienced so much better. As a health Coach I lead my clients to learn create td his awareness in their body through making these changes create morning routine night routine, do the five second rule, use the high five habit as part of their morning routine. I was just sharing all this with a friend yesterday through my masterclass. I love seeing women totally transform their life though the Awakening in menopause..I am saving this video to share with my clients...thank you
I cannot thankyou enough for this information. How it was explained was brilliant. It’s appalling that women are still being ignored and left suffering and yes by men..
Ladies, THANK you so much for this very informative video. I am 42 and I hate the way that my body has changed and the way that I feel. I went from a flat stomach and nice figure in my early 30's, to now LOOKING 10 months pregnant at times, with no waist. I'm a potato with sticks for legs... 😕
I needed this podcast today! I've been researching peri-menopause ever since my therapist suggested that peri-menopause might be causing a lot of my angst/anxiety/body frustrations. Thank you, Mel, for asking the questions we all need/want to ask.
So well explained! I'm 61 and been working out.A break in between caused havoc and a menopausal heart event ,but I'm back to being active and training well.
The doctor was super informative and she looks much younger than 54! As an African American woman I was hoping she was allowed to speak more on the differences in how different races experience menopause.
@@calista1280 pls don't start that. We are different, even the rate that we outwardly age (slowly) is different from other races...bone density, fat distribution, etc. DIFFERENT. And blk people were definitely not included in research back in the day unless we were used as lab rats against our will, and we still aren't included as much to this day for various reasons. So yes, I would like to here what the good DOCTOR has to say about it, not delusional comments, but thank you😊🎉!
Why don't you look up African research on the subject from Africa? Surely one of those many countries full of Africans has a university where the locals do scientific research...
@@rageonyx I have, but I shouldn't have to. I should be able to find out about my race in the country that my ancestors helped to build and that I am a natural born citizen of. Again, the doctor clearly has done far better research than I have or could do, and stated that there were differences, but was not given a chance to speak about them. Thank you for your suggestion.
What a great podcast. I am so glad I found your podcasts and your views on life. I'm 48 and constantly feel like I have no control over my hormones. This was a great podcast and I learned a lot. Thanks!Hugs from Canada.
I implore people to look into intermittent fasting . It has been so healing for me and especially weight loss. I started to intermittent dry fast four months ago too and my gut is almost gone and I'm in my 40's! I do a random extended fast too. These help turn brown fat to white so it can vanish easier. There are so many more benefits so please research if it's right for you too. I want everyone to thrive. 🤗
WHOA no one ever told me anything about this stuff!! Thank you Mel for sharing this information. The "weirdness" I've experienced in my lifetime due to female hormonal ups & downs has been mind blowing. Now I understand a little bit more about my body. Thank you.
Will you address the subject of natural options for maintaining/regulating female hormones? My gyno was very forceful in reccommending birth control when I hit 45 despite the fact that I had minimal peri-menopause symptoms. I declined his recommendation and did fine but I am talkiing to women in their 20's and 30's having significant hormonal/depression issues and take birth control. Considering the increasing concern with 'synthetic" pharma designed hormones and products, I would like to hear more about holistic options. Maybe a future episode Mel???
This was incredible 🤯 Soooooo timely! Thank you! I recently left a Dr that had me on the pellet and I was literally JUST a number!! 🤬 On a better path now!
❤ you too @melrobbins you and my dwindling peri menopausal hormonal levels make me cry 😭 in happiness! God bless you and the great female doctors for speaking up and advocating for all of us beautiful women! We would be lost and helpless without all of you beautiful females!
I am just starting to click on your channel to listen and i love your conversations. I ask group, are there any 30 or 15 minute conversations. I love you and I thank you Ma'am ❤ nameste
I’m in my 13th year of post menopause (I am 64 yrs old). Belly fat doesn’t go away, I get silly, itching, brain fog, mood swings etc. I’m on HRT and get blood lab every 3 months and exercise almost everyday! 🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
I went through 20 years of peri menopause. I was always flushing and feeling like I was burning from the inside out. I still get my period occasionally and I am struggling with brain fog, dryness, itchiness, and cravings. I have a blood disorder that makes hormonal replacements dangerous for me. I no longer have no idea how to feel better. I’m beyond tired.
This information is such a life changer for me, my friends and sister. I have a great OBG Dr., Of course a woman. She explained some of this to me before hearing your podcast. I'm now on medication, however to have this knowledge is such a game changer. Thank you for being you and bringing Dr Amy on the show.
❤❤❤
What did your nurse practitioner have you do to help with your symptoms?
Thankyou for shearing,
Sadly partners( men) of all women I know in my life including my own husband do not know about this and also not want to know about this.A big need to spread awareness among men to acknowledge this so that they can allow themselves to become supportive companions!!
Thank you!
As a 55 yo guy I really appreciate learning this information. Thanks Mel & Dr. Amy for the great discussion. ❤️
Dear Mel,
thank you a lot for this episode.
On the net I read this info that I would like to quote here:
"Besides humans, however, there are four species of whales for which nature has provided a kind of menopause: orcas (killer whales), belugas, narwhals and short-finned pilot whales. Orcas, for example, have their last baby around age 35 to 50, but have a life expectancy of about 60 to 80 years. Recent studies found evidence that the fertility phase of Asian elephant females also ends relatively early in life. Common to all these species is that they live in larger family groups. The older females contribute to species preservation by caring for the offspring of the younger ones."
Once again a thousand thanks for you, your family and your work.
Best regards
Martina
Yes!!!! We need to normalize hormone testing throughout life, so you have a baseline measurement to work from. Testing needs improvement. Improve the testing. Black & white proof . Not craziness. Women are struggling so hard with this everywhere. Kudos, Mel! Shout it from the rooftops!
You're so right! When I was talking to my doctor about HRT for after my scheduled Hysterectomy:
I said please check my hormone levels now, because I feel awesome right NOW!!!

I agree. I was told my issues are hormonal but my primary refuses to touch it. Gyno isn’t on board.
I struggled as well. Doctors just wanted to say I was depressed and that gaining 30 pounds in six months is normal when you age. It took years to finally find someone who would help. But it’s all out of pocket. In Los Angeles I pay $600 every 3 months. 🥴

I think you should have Dr.
Amy on a weekly basis!! So very much appreciate her knowledge. ❤
Such an educational episode! At 73 I didn’t know any of this and now I’m fighting the belly bulge struggling to lose weight.
This is exactly what I want to know tooooo! I hope she sees your comment and does a show just like this! ❤
Top comment!! 🎯 Should be pinned at top hopefully Mel will see this message ❤✌🏾🙏🏾
I just wasn’t sleeping anymore 😢
Such a great show!!
Isn't Kratom incredibly dangerous?!?!?!?
Please don’t interrupt when the conversation is so good You brought the Dr from menopause to beginning of menstrual cycle and talk about your self
Extremely frustrating and totally unfair to women's Healthcare.

OMG! What doctor did you go to? What country? What year? I live in Poland and it's normal that gynecologists speak to patients about menopause.

Later he offered me an antidepressant as well which I declined. 7 years later, after my hip replacement at age 50, I fired my long time Dr and got a female Dr. Menopause started age 51 yrs.

I went to my Dr with a whole list of symptoms, I tried to stress how awful things have been for me. I was just told these things happen.😡😢
I was told the same thing. It happens with age. Thank goodness women are starting to advocate for themselves. And then sharing their findings! Thank you, Mel for a great show.
Find someone to check your hormones if it doesn’t help.
This is so comforting and encouraging! You guys talked about EVERYTHING I am experiencing! You brought hope into a very dark place for me! 🤩💖

I too have been going through menopause for the last 5 years. I got tired of all the negatives so I had an RTT session and changed my diet and workouts and my career it was so powerful. Now I help women do the same. Hot flashes are gone, building muscle, the loose skin is tightening and I have lots of energy again. Your mind is brilliant and can seriously help balance you no matter what stage of menopause your going
through. Love Dr. Amy! So much
Great information and thank you for sharing.
Mel, it doesn’t go away in 3 years in my experience. I’m 71
Great conversation! Heavy lifting is where it’s at during and post menopause - skip the cardio unless it’s fun and relaxing, but it’s not going to change our bodies.
KETO is the way to weight control!
@@calista1280 I’ve been clean keto since 2009 then carnivore since Oct 2021 (dealt a terrible genetic autoimmune hand and these work for keeping me well).

This was great and very informative and interesting I’ve been itching for years! Sleep is a total disaster!🥰❤️😍😃

Wow! Thank you! I have been walking every day since I retired. (Saved me during Covid) I have dogs that demand a walk, and we have a lovely time.

The way she explains the process too is mind blowing 🤯& I can’t wait to share with every woman in my life❤
i know, Mel is the best - this woman is a miracle, not just a quak, quak, duck....
MEL!!! Can you please do an episode on HRT.. there's so much crappy info out there❤
this is an awesome episode!!

I have had unexplained infertility for the last 10 years, i exercise regularly, lift heavy weights, eat decently,
The only thing i have a small uterine fibroid and leptin resistance.
(After 2 dr’s telling me to my face,
“Move more and eat less”) Finally have a better solution and I feel more like me again!
Advocate for yourself!
May I ask where you received this support? I’m looking for help with HRT.
What online program?
I have been saying this for years!, this needs to be shared by all. Thank you so much!
Thanks! Thank you! Thank you! You are awesome! I'm so grateful you had this podcast. I am so tired of hearing all this information about my hormones just to sell me something. I needed a place where I could go to get true knowledge!

Yes! I've been doing this for about a year now. That 10-day countdown prior to my cycle starting. Don't do s***. That's when I'm pulling out frozen meals from the freezer or picking up food for dinner. I know I don't have the capacity to take on extra crap on those 10 days prior.

It’s appalling that women are still being ignored and left suffering and yes by men..

We're probably more similar than different...
WELCOME TO THE HUMAN RACE!!! 🎉❤
@@calista1280 pls don't start that. We are different, even the rate that we outwardly age (slowly) is different from other races...bone density, fat distribution, etc. DIFFERENT.
