That Time an Indian Kingdom Invaded Southeast Asia | Rajendra Chola and the Maritime Chola Empire

  • Indian history is diverse and bursting with narrative color. This is the real-life story of the Tamils -- led by Rajendra Chola I -- who forged an impressive fleet of ships and successfully invaded the biggest, baddest empire in Southeast Asia, changing the face (and fate) of the region forever.
    --
In 1025CE, the Tamil Cholas -- an Empire hailing from the southern regions of the Indian subcontinent -- invaded the Srivijaya Empire in Southeast Asia. This can surprise casual observers. After all, an organized naval invasion of distant lands seems out-of-place when considered in the context of most other Indian powers throughout history. In truth, however, the invasion was a sensible extension of Chola policy, and can be explained by the economic and political realities that defined South India in the medieval era.
Enjoy this brief look at the Cholas and their overseas exploits!

@@blackpearl5834 Hey black pink, I mentioned this in another comment -- it's just a cartoon-y look that I went with to make it interesting. The belly on a monarch is meant to symbolize his substantial wealth and power -- and to do so in a fun way. It is not meant to be a 1:1 depiction of Rajendra Chola in reality.
I can't change the thumbnail at this stage to make him skinnier, either, as I use the same character model in the video. I appreciate your interest though. I hope you enjoyed the video regardless!

The Chola empire was extra-ordinary. Its a shame CBSE had huge chapters about the Mughals but only two paragraphs about the Cholas. I was fascinated by the Chola kingdom exploits ever since I learnt that countries like Cambodia, Thailand and Indonesia have been influenced by Hinduism and that they follow most of Indian epics like Ramayana and Mahabharata as a part of their heritage. I wondered how the countries so far would know about India... Of course it was the Chola Dynasty who did that.

Assassin's Creed's plot is actually to show the kings and rulers as the bad guys or the Templar, while the assassin tries to defeat him in order to get the artifact.
So if the game took plac here, the protagonist will be a guy who travels around the city alone trying to eliminate each targets.

Even the political bastards who talk too much about Tamil and its history are all from the same background. The pretend to be Tamil to establish control over the territory.

Fun fact Raja Raja cholan holds the record for largest man made lake in history, it stretches for about 16miles... Least known fact.. there's an stone scripture in that lake the lake's name is kavinadu yeari it says that who ever any person from any cast creed religion regardless if the lake ever gets clogged or something were to happen to its supply chain (the lakes were built as an reservoir for the surrounding farmers and people with many outlets) even after his death and 1000 years past whom so ever clears it will have the eternal gratitude of the king where it specifically describes that the King would place the feet of that person on his head and pledge is servitude.... A King who conquered fortitude of nations, whose army instilled fear in hearts of every nation, a vast empire with supply chain with 6 continents, whose naval fleet so vast it made the bay of Bengal look like a lake has described in the great literatures, all in all A King of Kings saying that he will worship the feet of a common man who helps his people by giving them water.
Now to the people who read this you may disagree with me for my claims and may not believe me cuz as any human being i can lie but the pages and stones etched in history can't that scripture is still there that lake is still there and the legacy of this great king will live on.

15:17 Sri Rajahmura Lumaya, known in his shortened name Sri Lumay, was the first Rajah and the founder of the Indianized Rajahnate of Cebu. According to the epic Aginid, Bayok sa atong Tawarik,a Bisayan epic story, Sri Lumay was a half-Tamil and half Malay minor prince of the Chola dynasty in Sumatra. Sri Lumay was the grandfather of Rajah Humabon. He may be called a semi-legendary figure, since no other written records mentions about Sri Lumay, other than in oral traditions in the Visayan epic story of Anginid.
According to Visayan folklore, Sri Lumay was a half-Tamil & half-Malay Chola King from somewhere in Sumatra, who settled in the Visayas, and had several sons. One of his sons was Sri Alho, who ruled a land known as Sialo which included the present-day towns of Carcar and Santander in the southern region of Cebu. Sri Ukob ruled a polity known as Nahalin in the north, which included the present-day towns of Consolación, Liloan, Compostela, Danao, Carmen and Bantayan. He died in battle, fighting with the Muslim Moro pirates known as magalos (literally "destroyers of peace") from Mindanao. The islands they were in were collectively known as Pulua Kang Dayang or Kangdaya (literally "[the islands] which belong to Daya").

The other day I played as India using Persians to represent Indians due to the game's limited selection, and I had a lot of trade with Persia but they betrayed me, so I unleashed my war elephants. Later, Cambodia attacked so I had a large army in the east to defend India. When I was consolidating my conquest of Persian lands, I saw China invade Tibet, and knew I would be next, so I entered Tibet and war with China began, and it was epic.

I read of + seen of few clips & vlogs of above few Temples, but I also personally seen + visited few existing Temples in Malaysia & Singapore but I'm certain almost all of this last two nations are newer within the last many decades built by the newer South & North Indian expats living there, as British brought most as immigrants/ labours etc since late 1700 to mid 1900 period.
But the very big mountain Murugan Temple near KL, Malaysia, is it also newer or very old Chola's time( some oldest ones affected by Islam arrival, to Malay, Sumatra etc, right ?

Angkor Wat was built by the Khmer Empire, not the Chola Empire. The people were ethnically Khmer, the same ethnic group that makes up 90 percent of Cambodia's population today. The inscriptions at Angkor are written in a language called _Old Khmer,_ which is part of the _Austroasiatic language family_ just like modern Khmer, Vietnamese, and Mon (by contrast, Tamil is part of the Dravidian language family). Further yet, 11th century inscriptions tell us the people of Angkor called themselves "Sruk Khmer" which literally translates to "Khmer country."
Yes, the Khmer alphabet is DERIVED from the Pallava script of India, but the Khmer alphabet is NOT the Pallava script itself. Calling Khmer inscriptions as "Tamil" just because the Khmer alphabet is derived from the Pallava script of India would be as wrong as calling English inscriptions as "Italian" just because the English alphabet is derived from the Latin script of Italy.
And yes, Khmer kings had Indian names such as Suryavarman and Jayavarman, which come from Sanskrit. That's because ethnic Khmers ADOPTED Sanskrit names associated with Indian religions like Buddhism and Hinduism, the same way Indonesians and Pakistanis adopt Arabic names associated with Islam such as Abdul and Muhammad even though Indonesians and Pakistanis are not ethnically Arab. Similarly, Europeans adopt Hebrew/Semitic names associated with Christianity such as John, James, David, Adam, Isaac, and Michael, but that doesn't mean they're ethnically Hebrew.
Jayavarman is also an Indian/Sanskrit name, but his ancient statue clearly has Khmer or Eastern Asian features. In fact, Khmer people TODAY have Sanskrit names such as Soriya/Sorya, Devi, Chan, and Bopha/Buppha, but that doesn't mean modern Khmer people are Indian.
The point I'm making is that Angkor was a Khmer civilization, not Tamil or Chola. Scholars call this civilization the "Khmer Empire" for a reason, and it's because the people were Khmer, wrote Khmer, spoke Khmer, and called themselves Khmer in their own inscriptions.

    • @jcdenton1635
      @jcdenton1635 2 роки тому +8

Of course, the Chola Empire and the Khmer Empire were allies and had good relations. But it's important to point out that the Khmer Empire drew influence from India to create its own civilization with its own people, language, and culture distinct from India. Even Khmer architecture developed a unique style that can only be found in Cambodia/Southeast Asia, the same way German/Gothic architecture became its own unique style even though it drew influences from Romanesque architecture.

That's the ultimate driving force of Tamil country until it existed and ruled by Tamizh people. Even the greatest epic Silapathikaram known as the first epic to revolve around commoners than kings will show you lot about rich Tamizh guilds controlling things even during 2nd century. Simply masters of seas and with this unquenchable thirst for rich and unwavering boldness who knows what are all the new lands they would have visited and taken those facts to their graves without leaving for the next gens. It is a commonly accepted idea atleast in Tamil Nadu that they were not only traders but wanderers and explorers of the seas. Countless ancient Tamizh poems been written about wives showcasing their agony and love waiting for months and months for her husband to come back from trade and war journeys.

This is a great comment bro. Actually if I think about it personally, I feel its partly because of the capital being shifted to Delhi which is far away from the southern states. Kolkata was a great choice of Capital city situated around the coastal part of central India. Also the impact of Islamophobia throughout India could've been prevented if we had Kolkata instead of Delhi. Or we should've come up with a new idea having four head states of the country, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Madras. All four with evenly distributed governing bodies.. Our country is big and hugely populated, having one governing body located at the top-end makes it concentrate more on the border issue alone, which is very important of course, but leaving the rest of the country weak interms of defence or maritime sovereignty.. Afterall that's Indian ocean we have below us, We could easily have a formidable maritime force, instead we're letting all the neighbouring smaller countries around us join hands with china to bully us.. Money is important but, proper strategy is the most important of all.. Throughout history we've seen smaller countries come out time and again to conquer the world and even succeed for the most part. We too have had successes through history in this regard, but in present we kinda look weak and are blindly following the western world.. Hmm sad... Taking some good habit from other countries is great, but literally following everything.? That's wrong.

The Chola invasion was some 600 years before Kanhoji Angre and Maratha Naval prominence. The Cholas, Cheras and Pandyas had extensive navies in the South. Kalinga on the East is another example of naval prowess. Yet, the modern Indian Navy claims to derive it's ancestry from the Marathas though for all practical reasons it is merely a remnant of the Royal Indian Navy of the British Empire. This is just one example of an attempt to minimalize the role of Eastern, Northeastern and Southern kingdoms and peoples in the formation of modern India.

In fact, the Kalingga/Keling kingdom in Central Java originated from the Kalingga kingdom which collapsed during the Ashoka period.
The story of Aji Saka tells the story of the transfer of power on the island of Java from Dewata Cengkar/Melanesian to Aji Saka to live in (the ancestor of the Javanese). This kingdom was the forerunner of the Hindu Mataram kingdom (not the Islamic Mataram sultanate).
After that, the dynasty on the island of Java split into two, namely Sailendra (Sriwijaya) and Sanjaya (Mataram). The Srivijaya Kingdom was Buddhist while Mataram was Hindu. Because Balaputradewa was the son of a concubine and did not have a direct Galuh-Medang (West Java/Sunda) royal lineage, he moved to Sumatra and could not become king of Mataram.
The kingdoms of Srivijaya and Mataram for centuries competed with each other and there was tension between Hindus and Buddhists. Finally, after Nalanda was destroyed by the Cholamandala kingdom and the Srivijaya kingdom was weakened, there was a period of Shiva-Buddhist syncretism.
