The Indonesian Kingdoms didn't leave behind a large number of written records. As an Indonesian, I consider that to be a tragic situation. The Indonesian Archipelago has been a part of international trade for a very long time. The fact that we didn't have enough written records to even solidify our understanding of kingdoms like Sriwijaya and Majapahit is really sad. oh and a bit of trivia, Majapahit literally means Bitter Maja in English.
Tughril Mk. IX The "maja" of course being a kind of fruit (Aegle marmelos), for those who may not know. (sincerely, a Malaysian - that kingdom's part of our history too.)

Majapahit came from the word Maja which is a fruit that's so bitter (in Indonesian, bitter means pahit). So, in conclusion, Majapahit means a bitter fruit that was found at the place where Majapahit was constructed.

2:16 CORRECTION! The distance from northern sumatera (Banda Aceh) to eastern Papua New Guinea (Loani) is the same distance as between London and Jaisalmer, India. The distance beetwen London and Istanbul is not even a half of it.
@@islandsunset Amit Chakraborty You can check it by yourself if you have Google Maps. 6408 km is the distance between the easternmost tip of Papua to the westernmost tip of Sumatra. Almost exactly the same as the distance between London and Jaisalmer, Rajasthan, India (6412 km). For a comparison, distance from Rabat, Morocco to the North Pole is only 6,227 km. If we count only Indonesian territory (from the city of Sabang to Indonesia-PNG border) that would be 5,330 km. London to Istanbul is merely 2,500 km. @Jacky Phantom Yes, and not even close to Asia's Roman Empire (outside of territory size, perhaps). Asia's Roman Empire would be either the Mongol, the Indian or one of the Chinese dynasties due to their significant cultural impact on the continent
@Koishi KomeijiNo, Asia's Roman empire would the Mongol empire as a lot of rulers claimed decent from the Mongol. The oteer would be the Caliphate but that only really applies to Muslims.
As an Indonesian, you don't know how much I'm crying saw you finally cover this history. 😭😭😭 And, also my favourite sentence ini Majapahit is, "Bhinneka tunggal ika tan hana dharma mangrva" -- Difference but are the same. There's no duality in Truth.
@@jacoblevenson7934 More exposure as the north and south were Britain's colonies. Indonesian's culture are as old and as interesting as any on the South East Asia.
Indonesia has a super interesting history. They colonized Madagascar, built massive temples, have a super varied history, a culture made up of tens of thousands of different traditions and different cultures, built massive trading kingdoms, advanced shipbuilding and seafaring in the regions, and created massive amounts of art. The there is also incredibly interesting. It's a mix of Persian, Indian, Chinese, the various former trading kingdoms south of China, and indigenous peoples. There's a massive amount of history that took place on the islands and massive number of different peoples. Unfortunately people don't know this because despite Indonesia being the 4th most populous country it's under represented in history and news.
That's a nice continent you have all to yourself there, John Curtin. It would be a shame if someone were to settle it. **Kampungs all the pearls** **Holy City's the Great Barrier Reef** **Invades Canberra to the orchestral sounds of Rejang Dewa**
I find it strange that history and mythology from this culture is so rarely talked about, considering the monumental monuments that they built, and the nigh impossible feats that they accomplished in only a handful of years. Control over an entire trade, especially one as violent as nutmeg, is certainly a rarity in terms of history. Thanks. I now have something new to talk about in Anthropology class.
A lot of the source from this period was lost due to colonialism and islamic influence.. And also our nation weren't too focus on finding the history for now, we are in war with corruption and narcotics, soo maybe after those two were eliminated then the budget for history will come.. Hope so..
The biggest determining factor is how much a civilization leaves behind. Egypt is so often talked about because pretty much every nation around it made very extensive records and the Greeks were in love with it. Also one civilization that left even more is the Roman empire who's history was preserved for a very long time by both the Byzantines and the Catholic Church and who left thousands of records and hundreds of ruins behind. The idea that fact and fiction should be completely separate didn't really begin until well into middle aged Europe. Even then it wasn't firmly established until the enlightenment in the 18th century. Many ancient civilizations including the Romans and the Greeks didn't consider the embellishment of history to be wrong. What mattered to them was that the people who read those records got the proper idea and got the right lesson. People were supposed to learn from history and that was what was most important.
@@MrMarinus18 I mean look at India. They were one of the greatest, the one that should be the most talked about. But they're not. Why because many of their history were destroyed by the Islam rulers and British ( mostly by islam). So maybe that could've happened to this empire's history.
@@aasamspb967 Muslims didn't erase records or history for the most part. Indian Islamic empires were one of the most lettered and bookly states in the world at the time. Also, you gotta remember that Indian Muslims were also victims of historical ignorance, like a huge load of it because the Mughals were the most powerful state in the subcontinent at the time. You should seriously blame it on the British because they legitimately created a system to keep the Indian Muslims and Hindus ignorant and deluded.
@middle aged man in extreme debt see i don't even remember when do we learn it. i also have an interest in our history especially when it comes to kingdoms but god i can not listen to anything my teacher said back then because it's so boring
I wanna draw a manga about this due to globalization. Most people know alot of the history of the west not the East. And most entertainment showcase medieval Europe. I wanna do sth different. Not to say medieval Europe isn’t interesting. I think all of history is interesting if said right with no biases
I think Vinland Saga is a good historical manga and may get even more interesting when the setting shifts to North America where the Vikings will interact with the Natives.

Oh man, I've been hoping that you could cover a Southeast Asian dynasty for a long time, and I'm glad that you took the dive into Majapahit's predecessors too! Even in Malaysian textbooks, not much of Srivijaya gets covered, only names of inscriptions and where they were found - makes learning ASEAN history really dry, which is a shame :/ Thank you for doing this!
oml i feel ur pain. in indonesian textbooks theres only ever mentioned, "yeah we used to have like 3 kickass kingdoms until the white men came. now lets talk about how the whites are bad and islam is good (and every other religion sucks, despite us being a free multicultural country)" and thats all we ever learn for history.

Water. Earth. Fire. Air. Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then everything changed when the Fire Nation attacked. Only the Avatar, master of all four elements, could stop them. But when the world needed him most, he vanished. A hundred years passed and my brother and I discovered the new Avatar, an airbender named Aang, and although his airbending skills are great, he still has a lot to learn before he's ready to save anyone. But I believe Aang can save the world.
It gave me cold sweat when the narrator talked about how vast Majapahit is. I mean, imagine, while Rome might have around the same vastness of territory, most of it are land. However, more than 60% of Indonesian archipelago is water and they somehow managed to run such kingdom. The past is amazing when you know how to see it.
Waterbending! Lords of Water indeed. Also nice to finally hear of a Hindu Buddhist Kingdom in Extra History. Do a few episodes on the Vijaynagara Empire too!

Polynesians are the _descendants_ of (Proto) Austronesians. Not their ancestors. Polynesians are basically the result of intermarriage of Austronesians with Papuans and Melanesians. The language and culture is still almost wholly Austronesian, but genetically, they've been mixed with the locals they came across in Papua. It's similar to the Malagasy of Madagascar, whose culture and language is still mostly Austronesian, but genetically they've mixed with later East African settlers.
The old narrator walked off and made his own channel, where he reuploaded some of his old videos. I can't remember the name of it, but that's the most I know
Thank you so much for summarize Indonesian historic kingdom and make it so fun and easy to understand. Even I, as Indonesian that already learned about Mataram and Sriwijaya every year from junior high school until senior high school, would never be able to understood why these two kingdom was connected. History isn't my cup of tea I thought. But, now what I learned before make sense because of your video. You're right, without Sriwijaya, Mataram, the other Indonesia's kingdom, and the biggest of them all, Majapahit, there would never be Indonesia right now.
It should have been obvious from the structure of the sentence. You wouldn't say "They and their ancestors WILL make it their empire" since you wouldn't be using future tense to talk about what you ancestors did lol.
Also surprised the video didn't mention Madagascar, which was also settled by Austronesians - the modern population is genetically 50% East African, 50% South East Asian and their language Malagasy is very similar to languages spoken in Southern Kalimantan. Those Austronesians got around!
After thousand of years it's pretty hard to pinpoint the descendants since a lot of immigrants come to Java and mingle and mixed with everyone already there.

As a Malaysian I gotta say that I was very excited that Extra Credits would finally be talking about the Kingdom of Majapahit. It's legacy still endures throughout the Nusantara to this day.
Once upon a time, a huge archipelago, placed in the equator, called Nusantara was lived in peace. Most of them are 'Sea People' and control the trade route in the Eastern Sea. But all the peace was gone when the European Scumbag called Dutch attacks. More that 300 years this nation was suffering, and then comes the 'Older Brother' from the place where sun is rise every morning. They cast out the Dutch. But soon after that, they ruled this nation and bring another suffering. But they didn't last longer. The people now start a rebellion and cast out this 'Older Brother' back to their island, and then once again this nation declared their independent, under the Democratic State, and the years after, this nation thriving again to glories once more... To be continued... Edit: This could be a good story... I wonder if someone with talent will bring this to life in a form of novel or manga 🙄
When the first China's Journey to the West failed miserably as the appointed monk failed to translate the Tripitaka properly from Hindi to Chinese, the second journey was launched from Fujian via maritime trade route where the appointed I-Tsing monk arrived in capital city of Sriwijaya, the Palembang city. He was shocked to find there were millions of monks from around the World at that time, Chinese, Indian, Sriwijayan, Thai, Champa, Burmese, and lots others. The history he wrote was fascinating that the land was flourish with food, gold, spices and many things that make all resident in that land very happy and prosperous. He also recorded that when Sriwijayan King was insulted by Champa king, he sent his best 200 troops to invade the land in the morning. By evening, the troops returned with the head of the Champa king and took hostage of his son. It proved how powerful Sriwijayan Empire at that time.

Singapore was a pirate nest pre-British colonial. This is has been mentioned by a story of a Sriwijayan prince-in-exile who decided not to settle there but further north to Malacca, later he converted to Islam and build a muslim kingdom named Malacca. Another account was by a Chinese admiral, Zheng He, who defeated a Chinese pirate around the waters of Singapore.
@@jansenjunaedi4926nope. Singapore was a principality or small kingdom prior to majapahit and ayothya attack on the Inland. Two gigantic forces duked it out several times. But in the end the majapahit successfully won. And as singapore were too tiny to be used as a base for their navy armada. Too difficult to be defended. They burn the city state to the ground and brought singaporean nobles as political hostages in java. The majapahit then pushed north as far as pahang and kelantan until the kra isthmus. It was easyly more defendable There. And that area could host larger navy with the support of local rice paddies which wouldnt be sufficient and not possible in the former singapore or tumasik.

Yeah. Well Frank Herbert chose the term spice for a reason. It is more a referrer to the old spice trade that made empires in the past. But also a referrer to oils impact on the world today. After all it the flow of oil that allows for global travel. Just like the flow of spice allows for galactic travel. I like this double reference as makes you think not only about the colonial trade of old, but also how similar our world today is to world of the past. We after all often see our selves as having moved away from the primitive empire building of the past forgetting how we are at risk at committing the same atrocities again in the name of controlling resources.

The distance from northern sumatera (Banda Aceh) to eastern Papua New Guinea (Loani) is the same distance as between London and Jaisalmer, India. The distance beetwen London and Istanbul is not even a half of it.

That doesn't feel right. What's the distance?
london to istanbul is about 1900 miles ( 3.000-4.000KM) banda aceh to loani is about 6.000 to 7.000KM
Indonesia actuall spans almost as big as Russia, but it appears smaller in map because of the misleading Mercator projection.

I am Indonesian, I would like to thanks for telling Indonesia's history to the world. Very great explanations
Hope so..
If youre not from that area of the world it makes sense

Descendants not ancestors. The austronesians came first then the Polynesians. So they are the ancestors of the Polynesians not the other way around
It should have been obvious from the structure of the sentence. You wouldn't say "They and their ancestors WILL make it their empire" since you wouldn't be using future tense to talk about what you ancestors did lol.
According to the Polynesians article from Wikipedia, Polynesians are a subset of the Austronesians. So we are pretty much all like "cousins".
Something to save for the Lies episode!

"This is the island of Java" So where are my updates?
Spreckops sorry, your windows need some updates..
I live in that island and i can surely assure you it updates so often it has become a part of life for me
Over 3 Billion Islands use Java
You need Microsoft .NET Framework 4.7.2 to be able to update
in Indonesian it is Jawa
My God, Dune was a docudrama this entire time!
I knew i wasn't the only one who got that reference
Air Power! Need Desert Power! Water Power!
Oh my god finally video about majapahit something that i rarely see on youtube thank you so much guys
If you live in malaysia (like me) when you are "tingkatan 2" you have to learn this so i recommended all the tingkatan 2 out there to watch this (this will come on exam). Thanks EXTRA CREDITS!

Well that was a turn of a table
@@indahningsih3556 well there no "indonesia" yet before the Dutch came.
Ah, Majapahit.
Beating mongol empire in their own conquest game. As they say in china; All warfare is based on deception.
It's like poetry, they rhyme.
@@DBT1007 its actually the founding father of majapahit who beats Mongol and Jayakatwang,Raden Wijaya.

Top ten historical betrayal.
holy shit, really? they beats mongol? I guess I've never paid any attention in class....
It was easy man.Every one could do that.Making the whole Mongol soldier got drunk and then attacking them.It was easy. But I still wonder why the Mongols didn't retaliate?
Actually the length between northern sumatra to the eastern papua is *twice* the length between london and istanbul
Yeah very long distance :)
but sometimes they just make us look short so we may intimidate
Eastern papua is not part of indonesia, right?
the eastern is papua new guinea which is an independent country but they were part of indonesia@@Ujick46
"torture, murder and enslave to acquire spices" sounds like my game of Spore
Exactly my friend
Also I re downloaded the game and I want to go to the galactic core but it is impossible at on point i can't move my spaceship forward due to star distances
And im fucking fully upgraded and fully stacked yet it seems whatever way I go theres always a dead end and having the grox on my tail doesn't help at all
This is actually REALLY HAPPENING during Dutch colonial.
Nutmeg, what have you done
My foreign friends laughed how intergalactic spacefaring aliens indulge in spice trade instead of weapons and others.
Well, they simply didn't know history.
Hey how many peoples here want SPORE 2? Wkwkwkwk
i do... altho EA must fall first :D

I live so close to Borobudur and Prambanan! There are also lots of small temples beside them, with some are currently under repair to restore their original beauty, like the temple of Kalasan that should shine under full moon!
@RC Idk man, just come anyway. The ticket is cheap and they also have guides 😁
They've finished repairing Kalasan temple. But I don't go out to temples at full moon, so I don't really know if it can really shine haha
@RC There's a hill so it's a bit impossible haha. But the temple can be seen from intercity road, so maybe if I pass there at night I can see it it really shine or not 😆😆
I'm Javanese, thank's for this wonderful video mate... I hope you can make a lots of content like this, beacause now day a young people on Java didn't want to study about their culture... well, keep going mate and I hope more people know about Javanese...

If Nalanda University was not destroyed in past we definitely could find much of the South and Southeast Asian history in detail coz most of the South and Southeast asia were either practing hindu or Buddhist or mixture of both and Nalanda at that time served very basic and foundation education for the Elite who can write Philosophy, economy, religious text. So definitely it did incorporated most of the languages which were used in writing these things for their kingdoms.
