Majapahit came from the word Maja which is a fruit that's so bitter (in Indonesian, bitter means pahit). So, in conclusion, Majapahit means a bitter fruit that was found at the place where Majapahit was constructed.
Yes, you are correct.
Make sense!
Who is more bitter?

In pilipines bitter means pait

Oh man, I've been hoping that you could cover a Southeast Asian dynasty for a long time, and I'm glad that you took the dive into Majapahit's predecessors too! Even in Malaysian textbooks, not much of Srivijaya gets covered, only names of inscriptions and where they were found - makes learning ASEAN history really dry, which is a shame :/ Thank you for doing this!
Actually it's because we(Indonesian) don't find much about Srivijaya. Srivijaya didn't left us many things, only the first dinasty did that.
@stellvia hoenheim but the history is power, BETTER THAN A NUCLEAR BOMB IS A PEOPLE ITSELF

Yeah. Well Frank Herbert chose the term spice for a reason. It is more a referrer to the old spice trade that made empires in the past. But also a referrer to oils impact on the world today. After all it the flow of oil that allows for global travel. Just like the flow of spice allows for galactic travel. I like this double reference as makes you think not only about the colonial trade of old, but also how similar our world today is to world of the past. We after all often see our selves as having moved away from the primitive empire building of the past forgetting how we are at risk at committing the same atrocities again in the name of controlling resources.

Prambanan was completed before Mataram capital moved to east. Prambanan was built as Hindu version of Sewu temple, just a few hundred meters north of Prambanan. Sewu temple complex is the 2nd largest Javanese Buddhist structure after Borobudur.

Polynesians are the _descendants_ of (Proto) Austronesians. Not their ancestors. Polynesians are basically the result of intermarriage of Austronesians with Papuans and Melanesians. The language and culture is still almost wholly Austronesian, but genetically, they've been mixed with the locals they came across in Papua. It's similar to the Malagasy of Madagascar, whose culture and language is still mostly Austronesian, but genetically they've mixed with later East African settlers.

Once upon a time, a huge archipelago, placed in the equator, called Nusantara was lived in peace. Most of them are 'Sea People' and control the trade route in the Eastern Sea. But all the peace was gone when the European Scumbag called Dutch attacks. More that 300 years this nation was suffering, and then comes the 'Older Brother' from the place where sun is rise every morning. They cast out the Dutch. But soon after that, they ruled this nation and bring another suffering. But they didn't last longer. The people now start a rebellion and cast out this 'Older Brother' back to their island, and then once again this nation declared their independent, under the Democratic State, and the years after, this nation thriving again to glories once more... To be continued...

Who is using java for their computers?
3 billion people.
Approx. 3,400,000,000 People.
Mataram, presumably.
5:43 after hearing the word ‘spice’ so many times I was waiting for a dune reference (and I didn’t notice Paul Atreides standing there until my second viewing).
The old Mataram kingdom ended due to a combination of natural disaster i.e, volcanic eruption and tsunami, an attack from one of Sriwijaya vasal in western java, and all out riots from the populace, or so the legends have told us. This event, this period of Mahapralaya or great dissolution or the great calamity is still being debated on whether or not the event actually happened, and was it as bad as the record said (due to the tendencies of pujangga/writer/scribe to exaggerating a bunch of stuff, these ancient texts could be trusted to a certain degree). with that said, I wonder if the team of extra history gonna cover the king that walked on water (Airlangga) and the feuding dynasty of Singosari. It'll be interesting but probably gonna stretch this topic just a tad bit longer than when they cover Justinian if not longer.
I can see the dissolution due to years of bad management and corruption. While Mataram is strong but it's one king with small kings under him. Those small kings are not weak, they tend to be quite rowdy sometimes. Java is like Japan, where smaller areas ruled by small king/lord and they tend to feud with each other sometimes.
I heard that the turmoil in internal gavelkind and external attack from another kingdom is the major problem. And I think it's fair for EC team to consider the continuation of Mataram legacy to Singosari too. Which lead to foundation of Majapahit I guess(?)
@@nikolaipedrov9084 Singosari is not direct legacy of Mataram because they form new monarch lineage unrelated to Mataram. The direct legacy of Mataram is Kediri. Formerly Singosari is a vassal to Kediri but then rebelled against it.

Nice, you are finally branching out into actually obscure history instead of the previous topics which read like the typical US highschool/college course plan: central events in world history, some things only relevant to the US and all the nations/cultures the US Americans and Brits stepped on. I like the new direction. It tells me: There might be hope for getting something about the Baltic people like e.g. the Northern Crusades.
Robert The Wise. None of the topics of extra history videos have been taught in any history course I’ve taken in US public school.
Not even the start of WW1?
Robert The Wise When we cover the start of WW1, we really don’t go into specifics. There was like an acronym they taught us - the “MAIN causes”: “Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism”. But besides that, we’re only taught WW1 for a week at most, and it’s only used to set the stage for the 20s and 30s
Wow, US schools are even worse than I thought.
It's just a different philosophy. You're taught facts for background knowledge, we're taught themes so we know not to repeat them.

Why do all these names sound Sanskrit?
Indonesians don't speak Sanskrit.
because Indonesia before the arrival of Islam, namely in the Majapahit era and previously was very influenced by Hindu culture brought by Hindu priests from India around the 6th to 17th centuries, a great power called Islam rose and brought changes to language, culture, manners, religion and the way they name their children. Modern Indonesian also has a lot of vocabulary that matches the meaning and meaning of the Sanskrit language, because Indonesia is a meeting of many ethnic groups in the world, our culture is also influenced by large ethnic groups who originally came to Indonesia to trade, spread religion and others. So, don't be surprised if many of the languages, cultures, traditional activities are synonymous with Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, etc.
well, you Indians came to our country and brought your whole religions and culture here....
Because trade that why indonesia, malaysia, and singapore are culture meltingpot

Borobudur was built by King Samaratungga and completed by his daughter Pramodawardhani of Syailendra. Queen
Pramowardhani (Buddha) married to Rakai Pikatan of Sanjaya (Hindu), the one who built Prambanan.
Their marriage brings harmony between two religions. Pramowardhani supports the construction of Hindu temples in Mataram., Rakai Pikatan also helped the establishment of Buddhist temples. Many Buddhist temples on Plaosan were established with the help of Hindus.
After Queen Pramowardhani died, the throne was passed on to her husband

So they're like Europe's Roman Empire to Indonesia
@Jacky Phantom Yes, and not even close to Asia's Roman Empire (outside of territory size, perhaps).
Asia's Roman Empire would be either the Mongol, the Indian or one of the Chinese dynasties due to their significant cultural impact on the continent
@Jacky Phantom indeed they are
The root of Indonesia's toxic imperialism too
@Koishi Komeiji south east asia's roman empire, NOT asia's roman empire
@Koishi KomeijiNo, Asia's Roman empire would the Mongol empire as a lot of rulers claimed decent from the Mongol. The oteer would be the Caliphate but that only really applies to Muslims.
Learning this in history class : BORING
Watching this video : Hmm interesting
Indonesia really need to change their way of explaining lessons

I wanna draw a manga about this due to globalization. Most people know alot of the history of the west not the East. And most entertainment showcase medieval Europe. I wanna do sth different. Not to say medieval Europe isn’t interesting. I think all of history is interesting if said right with no biases
I'd read that manga.
Do the research
I think Vinland Saga is a good historical manga and may get even more interesting when the setting shifts to North America where the Vikings will interact with the Natives.
Pls make the concept like Kingdom manga with Hayam Wuruk as Ei Sei and Gajah Mada as Shin
Avatar the legend of aang gives a very good portrayal of asian culture
The Indonesian Kingdoms didn't leave behind a large number of written records. As an Indonesian, I consider that to be a tragic situation. The Indonesian Archipelago has been a part of international trade for a very long time. The fact that we didn't have enough written records to even solidify our understanding of kingdoms like Sriwijaya and Majapahit is really sad. oh and a bit of trivia, Majapahit literally means Bitter Maja in English.
Tughril Mk. IX The "maja" of course being a kind of fruit (Aegle marmelos), for those who may not know.
(sincerely, a Malaysian - that kingdom's part of our history too.)
Wilwatikta = majapahit = bitter maja fruit
They even made large empires with such a simple names.
