The Oldest Settlements in South India: The Keeladi Excavations

  • How old are the oldest settlements in south India? What did the recent excavations at Keeladi and other places along the Vaigai and Porunai (Thamirabarani) rivers reveal?
For a long time, it was believed that south India had no ancient urban civilisations like in the north. While the Sangam Period (dated 300 BCE - 300 CE) literature talks of a sophisticated Tamil civilisation, there was no concrete archaeological proof to back it up…until the path-breaking Keeladi excavations that started in 2015.
A series of digs carried out by the Archaeological Survey of India in a little village near Madurai unearthed artefacts dating back at least to the 6th century BCE. This included pottery fragments with graffiti marks very similar to the Indus Valley script.
But Keeladi isn’t the first or only place to offer evidence of ancient settlements in Tamil Nadu. Adichanallur, Korkai, Pallavaram, Attirampakkam and many more sites have thrown up an array of amazing artefacts over the last 100 years or so, including the oldest human tool to be ever discovered in India - a hand-axe that was discovered in Pallavaram, part of present-day Chennai. It’s only in recent years that the pieces of the jigsaw have started coming together. Archaeologists believe that many more exciting discoveries, possibilities and answers are waiting to be found at this site.

Just so you know- Not all North Indians speak Hindi lmao. I'm a Punjabi Hindu and we speak Punjabi, obviously. Many of us who are North Indian and not from UP and Bihar, have our own languages and also are affected by the Hindi imposition. So I can sympathize with how you all feel. To be fair, many of us in the North think everyone in the south speaks Tamil, which of course is ridiculous.

More insightful , well -articulated ! These excavations throw the lights on the theory of Wootz steel also known as Seric steel , meaning Urukku in Tamil , first invented by Tamils in the world 2500 years ago, which is a crucible steel by pattern of high carbon content. Not gold or silver ; but Alexander the Great wanted this metal called Wootz Steel from South India . The European started trading directly with India in the 1600s , they went to the foundries at Kodumanal , Erode District , Tamil Nadu , to procure Indian steel . Earlier to European, Arabs travelling to India for 2000 years , carried out trade , buying spices , they added Wootz steel form Tamil Nadu, in their purchase books , later introduced this steel to Syrian , from there it was named as Damascus Steel . Later Romans started visiting Tamil Nadu to buy Wootz steel pellets and started producing double edged sword and won the world .

@ASK ME I did not say aryan invasion is false, it did happen. The aryans had a language that was more similar to the Avestan, the early Persian language. When they came to IVC , they borrowed the Dravidian- Proto Thamizh alphabet and grammar, added few more and gave a written form of Sanskrit. Other wise the Aryan language had no script, the vedas had only an oral tradition. It was after the birth of Sanskrit as a language with script, vedas took a written form. And the sanskrit as a language flourished before it’s death.

Not true. It is a bit biased against the North Indian excavations which have dated to well over 5000 years and are much larger and more widespread. The general confirmation is that civilization spread West, South and East in the post-Saraswathi era from the core area of the Saraswathi -- we see it in the downward Migration of Sage Agastya. Today's Abrahamic religions also were the result of a post Saraswati migration and that is why there is a common undeniable link between Genesis and the various Creation/Flood Myths of Hinduism.

Bhirrana -- is actually older -- en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bhirrana -- while Rakhigarhi is same period as Mohenjodaro and reflect a large urbanized settlement far exceeding anything found in Europe or the Russian Steppe. Bhirrana represents the single longest period of settled human activity in the World potentially. We need to be secular and scientific and true about these ideas.

Teaching Indians including Tamils about the Western Migration of Sanskritic and Indus Valley and Vedic culture might also be a good way if done with the right perspective that is also North India friendly. Few corrections:
    1) Everyone knew southern civilization was atleast 2800 years old since steel was discovered in southern India around 2600 to 2800 years ago. Also, the longest surviving empire in the world was also a south Indian empire, the Pandyas, whose empire lasted atleast 1800 years.
    2) The Harrappan civilization was believed to be atleast 5300 years old, not 4600. Also, recent ASI excavations and surveys have discovered the civilization to be atleast 8000 years old. Making it the oldest in the world. The report of these surveys is expected to be published in a few months.

The landmass that we call India today was part of Africa once. It broke off from Africa and moved up north east and hit the Asian landmass which caused the Himalayan mountain range. The people who were living at that time in India look very much like the aborigins of Australia. They were the first people of India. After the Himalayan mountains were formed, the only way to come to India was through Afghanistan and Aryans migrated through Afghanistan to India and settled down in India. The Aryans had been coming to India ever since and continues even today. India is a mixture of Aborigins of Africa, the Aryans and the Tibetans of Northwest.
