I decided to set myself the challenge of making some music using a retro video game for the PS1 called Music 2000. After making some beats on the PlayStation I use a Yamaha MT8X cassette recorder as the multitrack device for the overdubs.

I loved Music 2000. Unfortunately, all of my 'masterpieces' were lost after moving away from my parents. Thanks for bringing the memories back :)
That’s gutting that you lost all your tunes! Thanks for watching. 🙏
I have the pc version do have more sampling time with pc version
Challenge yourself by remaking them. You can use emulators if you want since it's abandonware now.
I enjoyed that way more than I was expecting! Sounds very 90s!
Glad you enjoyed the 90’s vibe!
My uncles used a tascam 788 which was a digital 8 track machine that allowed you to record twice on each track so it was a 16 track machine. They would hook the red and white audio wires into the back of the 788 and press play and record the beat in real time to the 788 memory card . People thought that they used a big budget studio because of the sound quality of the music generator and the 788 .
That sounds like a great little setup! Did they do overdubs with other instruments after they laid down the stereo track from the music generator?
I love music 2000. I ran a music 2000 website where people sent in music and i put it on the site. I wish i still had access to it.
That’s a shame you can’t access the website anymore, I’d I’ve liked to have seen that.
I have pc version can you help me get back producing do I have more sampling time on the pc version
Oh my God! This works so well!! Blown away by the final result 👏🏻 👏🏻
Cheers man, thanks for checking it out! Was lots of fun playing around with all the retro styles on this game. 😃
This is very very cool to see.
Thanks, glad you enjoyed it!
The algorithm wins again. This is a cool video. I had one called Dance Ejay (the first one) on PC.
Glad you enjoyed the video and I’ll have to see if I can check out Dance Ejay. 👍
Pretty cool, nice one!
My pals used to use this back around the millennium. Some great compositions they did, techno/brain dance.
I was using a tape 4 track and went into recording mixes to mini disc with my gear. No one thought of using m2000 with a 4 track though. It was a bit limited but using it conjunction would have opened more possibilities :)
Cool, I bet your mates had a deeper understanding of M2000 than me, I only really scratched the surface here. 😊
I found the game gave me some good starting points but felt more at home with the tape overdubs, and was able to develop the idea a bit more with a live track on top.
@wehappyfewmusic Sounds very good and professional. Nice guitar work!
They used to layer melodies and program breaks if I remember. There was only so much you could do with it. I'm sure there was a lo-fi sampling option.
Amazing really for the time.
@@dwb1980 That sounds cool! Some of the demos on the disc are rather sophisticated and sound very 90’s too (I think they were by pro musicians/DJ’s from the time?). I had a quick go with the sampler too and it’s works pretty well but you have to keep them very short.
That was really good!!
@@diannebannister8496 Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! 🙏
I remember that snare from the Emu planet phatt sound module
Oh cool, I hadn’t realised that’s where it originated from.
Dizzie Rascal made his debut hit single using this as the sketch pad.
Oh cool, I didn’t know that! 👍
That was great. Took me right back to y2k. 😎
Hey David, that’s great to hear! Glad you enjoyed it. 🙌
fun and educational, thanks!
Many thanks 🙏🤩!
Duuude I gotta ask, what is that bass thats hung up in the intro of the video? It looks beautiful!
Thanks, it’s a vintage Kay KJB-1B short scale bass from the 70’s. Not very expensive but I love it.
Great job with that yamaha.cool.i love it
Thanks for checking it out and positive feedback, the Yamaha is a nice little deck to work with.
@@wehappyfewmusic no problem .i also using music 2000 playstation 24 years i created lot of music there. And i love it.
I never paid much mind to video games, so I was ignorant of the fact that some of them featured DAWs..? Nice 8-track. I still have my Yamaha MT-120 cassette 4-track which still works as perfectly today as it did when I bought it new around 1993...ish? Yamaha made the best -sounding cassette "studios" by far. I swear the sound quality is comparable to any good reel-based tape machine. It made the Teac 144 sound like a K-Mart tape recorder Little Suzie used to record her and her friends singing "Ring around the Rosie" . Hmm, wasn't this interesting all around. Thanks for posting this.
Hey, yes Yamaha are the unsung hero’s of tape machines in my opinion! They never seem to be as popular/well regarded as the Tascam’s, but as you say have great sound quality. Thats impressive that you’re MT-120 is still going strong, and that you’ve kept hold of it for over 30 years (I’ve got a bad habit of flipping gear 😅).
the words you use to describe the controller leads me to believe youre game knowledge begins and ends with pac man
This challenge was a steep learning curve for me! ☺️😅
Thank you. That was awesome. I was just talking to my singer like 30 mins ago about this game, I spent some time one this game.
Thanks very much! It’s a fun game and has loads packed in, especially considering how old it is.
So Music 2000 is just like MTV Music Generator because they wre both made by Jester?
Yes I think so, not sure why they gave them different names though?
Hi wehappyfewmusic I have recently dug out this program and I am currently trying to locate a ps2 what I would like you to share with me is how can I get the audio beats I've made onto a Mac do u have any clue as I'm totally lost just subscribed to your page too and liked the video many thanks
Hi, thanks for checking out the video and the sub!
You’ll need to run a stereo rca phono audio lead out of your PlayStation and plug the other end into your Mac via an audio interface. If you want to keep all the instruments separate so you can remix them on your Mac, you’ll need to record each track one at a time from music 2000 in real time (just mute everything apart from the track you’re transferring).
Set the BPM in your DAW to the same as it is in Music 2000 before you start. Once everything is in your computer program you’ll just need to line them up so they are in sync.
@@wehappyfewmusic thank you for such a speedy reply u are a life saver so ur saying I could just use the cables u suggested and run it into my focuisrite and into the Mac? I just want the whole finished tracks not the individual audio files
@@Neovelipureunity No problem. Yes that would be nice and easy if you just want the whole track. With the lead, I’d probably go for one that has the red and white phono connections on one end, and 2 mono 1/4 jacks on the other.
Much appreciated uve been a great help have a blessed day and keep up the good work with the videos etc
Maaaaaan! Is this the same as Music Generator just with a différent name or completely different game? They look exactly the same on screen. On Generator, you can sample. Made some.of my first tracks on This game.
Hey, I think they are pretty much the same game, just with a different name? You can also do sampling on Music 2000.
@@Joel-qz6sd Cool, I’m only using the basics so far but it’s amazing how versatile it is.
I have a Playstation One 😃
Cool, I’d recommend you invest a fiver or so on this game then! 🙌👍
Omgoodness i use to sample off of cds but with the pc version can i just sample mp3 from the laptop
I’ve not tried the PC version but that would definitely speed things up.
@@wehappyfewmusic I've been reading m2k hall of fames take on duckstation and avoiding the disc ...Im so excited
Hi, I got Music 2000 to run perfectly on the PC using an emulator. I just don't know how to change the BPM anymore. Would like to set 90 BPM. I spent a lot of time with Music 2000 back then and built the first beats but it still doesn't occur to me.
Oh no, that sounds a bit frustrating, it’s pretty easy to change the bpm on the PlayStation version but maybe they’ve hid it in a submenu on the PC emulator? Hope you can find it! 🤞🏻
@@wehappyfewmusic How do you change the BPM on Playstation? I have a copy of the original Music 2000 program from the Playstation running on my PC with the Duckstation emulator. I also operate everything with my Playstation 4 controller. There is no difference to the original Playstation console.
@@RamosTyson87 You might have figured it out by now but if you scroll to the bottom past the 24th channel you'll come to some settings such as volume, reverb and of course the BPM which will display the number 130 in the block. Just press on that then it will open a slider that you can use to adjust the BPM.
I had a demo of this. I liked it more than eJay, but the latest got way moreplaytime than this.
Cool. I’ve not used eJay before, was it on PlayStation 2 as well as Windows?
Ps1 only has left and right out, so why 4 track cassette multitrack 4:56 oh ok
Thanks for getting to the end! Yeah, I wanted to add some live instruments too. 🎸
@wehappyfewmusic nice video, music 2000 is horizontal but music 1.0 was vertical
@@rustymixer2886 interesting, I wonder if they swapped it around to make it more like a regular DAW?
@@wehappyfewmusic yup people complained about first one, there a video of uk woman using it
