    I think it’s going to do much better than people think. Obviously I could be wrong, but a lot of the old kits, whilst being dated, still actually hold up when painted and if they get the pricing right (big of) more people might be willing to give the older stuff a go. Also, smart choice to start with two of the armies that haven’t had models released in well over a decade since they’ll sell well, even with just the old players who still play 8th eduction, army projects and 9th age. The fact that people love the total war games also might help.

    8th edition kill WHFB, increase in figure price combined with increased size of core units because of hoard rules and no entry level game made it too expensive and time intensive for new players. With 'TOW' I'm really hoping that they make the game scaleable and you can play with 500pts as easily as you can with 3000pts and because they are reusing old molded for core troops they will keep the price of these units down. But it is GW so not holding my breath.

      Agreed but unfortunately the decline started with the rampant powercreep of 7th edition army books, up to demons that basically killed an edition with incredibly solid core rules.

      You're right in your reasoning but GW are so far beyond reason due to their shitty corporate take on everything so on that basis they'll release and it will be DOA or killed in the cradle... very regrettably. Tbh my gaming group went off WHFB before 8th edition: The expense and game system was not given enough "new lease of life" post-2000 imho and it ended up stagnating the game system.
      Skirmish was ALWAYS the solution to the Old World/WHFB to create a much more accessible game system and points/army size with warbands aka Mordheim with each mini a unique character model (more or less) then use that to start as a basis to jumping to 500pts and beyond with more scenarios and campaigns...
      Over time GW has ossified from the RPG/wargaming hybrid early days into a mere product company, losing sight of the secret sauce that made the games, the lore and more all so enjoyable...

    I’m super excited for Old World. My whole games club collapsed after the end times. Then my life changed and I left the hobby for a bit. A career change and 2 kids later and I’m so ready for fantasy to come back. No disrespect to AoS but it lacks a lot of the charm of the old game, for me anyway.
    Another thing I’m excited for are green gaming tables. With woods and farm buildings, fences rivers. After 2 editions of playing 40K and Heresy on grey and brown gaming tables I’m ready for a bit of whimsy. Looking forward to making a farmers field and gluing flowers to my square bases! I’m already building a fantasy version my favourite local pub for use in games!

I play Ogres and Skaven using Mantic Games minis and it works great. @@the_kieran_show not gonna lie, I see GW doing something in between, trying to take the best of earlier editions while mixing in some fresh ideas from AoS. After all, it isn't actual Warhammer Fantasy but something new based on the world.
      The end goal will most likely be something close like what they did with the newest edition of Horus Heresy in my opinion. It would also fit, Horus Heresy is the "historical" 40k game, now "Old World" will be the "historical" AoS.
      I also expect that a lot of later releases might be forgeworld, mirroring Horus Heresy, while GW will mostly focus on starter items and the current top dogs of their franchise.

      They've already said they're releasing new models for like 6 of the original armies. Thats it. The rest get a 1 page PDF rules "update", and no reprints or new models of any kind. Cause the undead are "sleeping".

    • @Tulkash01

      Actually the Vampire Counts (as in the Von Carsteins) are very weak at the moment in time the Old World is set in. Hel Fen happened, Mannfred was cut down (his eventual return is detailed in the 4th Ed Undead army book) and Vampires are not raising huge armies at this point in time. On the other hand the tomb kings are pretty active with Settra raiding the coasts of the Old World and the errantry wars ready to happen, so it’s quite a fine time to be undead but vampires are laying low.

    As someone who doesn't play the game, and has no interest in the competitive side; this was fascinating to watch. Personally I'm just glad to see the old kits return for sale so others who have fallen in love with the setting can share their creativity with the world, or just take joy in collecting something they learned about through the massively popular Warhammer Fantasy video games.
    I'm more excited to see the miniatures people paint and a fresh resurgence to the community, than knowing whether or not people play the game in their game stores.
    I was inspired to paint my old metal and resin Chaos Dwarf project with the announcement; so even if the new release doesn't do well I'm sure there will be plenty who dust off their old armies, either on shelves or in boxes, and get enjoyment from their toys! Also curious to see if they will print new books around the Old World 'Age of Three Emperors.'

    Fantasy / old world is a much different type of game than the other 3 main ones (which are esentially reskinned versions of the same framework...) if only because of the regiment setup.
    It's success is a matter of how much are they willing to invest really. AoS grew only because they invested very heavily and the other alternative is more sci-fi. In terms of aesthetic, look of the army and display warhammer fantasy beats all of them. The problem is that some of the returning kits really show its age.

      @jakobo88 11 місяців тому +1

      @@Basil_Ghothickovitch They killed fantasy and really gave up on it way before that.
      The only reason AoS did well is because they killed fantasy, they pushed and forced AoS very hard very early on, and it is a similar archetype of gameplay than 40k.

  • @consistentlystupid4726
    @consistentlystupid4726 11 місяців тому +1

    I don't think you can compare The Old World to Horus Heresy. A big issue with the Horus Heresy is that it's just Space Marines fighting Space Marines. There's very little variety and I can see why it's easy for people to get bored of it. The Old World, even if you ignore the armies that won't be part of the narrative, have like 9 unique armies. There's a lot more variety for people to want to jump around to different armies.
    I also don't think you can just call it "nostalgia". Yes there is definitely nostalgia involved, but that downplays the fact that The Old World is a very different game to Age of Sigmar. There's almost no similarities between the two in how they play. Age of Sigmar wasn't just "Warhammer Fantasy" with a new coat of paint. It was an entirely different universe AND game. There's a lot of people who just didn't want to move to Age of Sigmar because they weren't a fan of the gameplay mechanics change, regardless of how they felt about GW blowing up the setting they loved.
    As for a tournament scene, unless the game bombs spectacularly, I imagine there will be people who want to participate in tournaments with the game. Again, it's so different than AoS that those people can't just do an AoS tournament to scratch that itch.
    The biggest barrier to entry will be seeing what they do with model counts and unit box prices. Warhammer Fantasy was difficult for people to get into back in the day due to the price of entry. 8th Edition made this worse when they added in the Horde mechanics and Steadfast, forcing people to field even BIGGER units than they would have before. That's the main thing GW needs to fix. They need to make sure the game is accessible to new players.

  • @erih2934
    @erih2934 11 місяців тому +2

    It's extremely weird release, but I would say its not really comparable to Heresy.
    Heresy is a (big) niche game based of the book hype and favorite 'faction' of 40k. Its mainly for hardcore and elder SM fans - I'm saying it because its more expensive (go Forgeworld) and based of rules that resemble more then 90s 40k than modern day. Its biggest advantage is on the other hand the very condensed range - they need only few kits to serve pretty much all factions - SM get the new stuff and represent 18 factions, daemons can be the regular daemons and Imperial guard can use Imperial guard - its a very solid core to serve a system that you are expanding (they still fucked it up with the year of the tank). And for the crazy ones you can go with full Forgeworld armies (or buy a tropical island with that money).
    Old World is very different. It will rely on old players bringing back their armies to fill a void. There are too many factions, too many minis to really get the Warhammer Fantasy feeling served quickly. I really don't know how it will go. Luckily I am not interested as I'm currently not part of any gaming group and I have my huge HH/40k project to keep me busy, but even if things were different it would feel like a big risk to invest into it. Maybe if I finish my Dark Angels in a couple of years and either Kislev or Slanesh Chaos Warriors turn out to be really great model ranges I might do a collection for fun, but I have serious doubts - Total War Warhammer serves that itch pretty well.
    It is going to be very interesting to see how expensive the new armies will be. New kits, mixed with old kits, mixed with resin and very depending on how big units will turn out to be. I guess I'm more interested in how GW will handle the business aspect of it all than the game itself.

      I think you've made some really fair points.

      @@the_kieran_show I hear ya! Heresy was like my bread and butter I absolutely love the setting but it is entirely dead in my area. I’m hoping that with positivity the old world will stay afloat. However it’s hard to say given the fact that WHFB wasn’t performing when they gave it the axe. It’s a numbers game
      In my opinion and where fantasy shoots itself in the foot is when you
      Have your army that’s pretty much it. Most people like myself will really only have to dust of their existing armies and I’m wondering if that is going to
      Hurt the overall welcoming over the old world given that they are bringing back a lot of old minis.

    I think the game will be excellent as a system, just judging from the little they've previewed (and the fact it's apparently had iirc ~100 playtesters working on it since iirc 2019 a rarity in GW) and i think it will be a modest success but i have little interest in investing in the game. WHFB had quite a few REALLY dull, indistinct factions (AOS is pretty much a direct response to this point), and imo most of the lame factions are coming out first with a bunch of the interesting ones only supported with Legacy PDFs, for example Skaven and Vampire Counts. Who knows how long it will take to roll out the armies, i've heard rumours that the initial 9 armies are going to take 3 years! to come out.
    Should have been Kislev Vs Chaos Dwarfs or something, then i might have been interested. If i do get caught in the Hype there's at least Greenskins or Empire (but i'd be doing a counts as army using AOS stuff) and that's assuming their Army Books come out close to release. Any chance we can see your Heresy Army/ some Heresy content Kieran(s)?

      I don't understand it on any level. Nostalgia is not enough for this to run on. A WFB ruleset is the exact opposite of the ruleset you would design to appeal to fans of the video games. The old sculpts don't appeal to people like me who are nostalgic for the setting, but primarily are collectors and painters. Heresy at least has a complete new model range. I have no clue what they're going for. The only thing I can think is that this is like the movie Morbius and they've looked at the internet noise around Fantasy and thought it was real enough to make Morbius 2.

If they also launched with some of the old Empire and Orcs kits I'd be willing to buy in and add to the success of the launch and hopefully keep it healthy for future.
    Also, I hope we can use the new AoS kits which have equivalents in Old World. For example, the new aggradon lancers for Seraphon are basically updates of the old Lizardmen cold one riders, but they are significantly bigger and come in boxes of 3 rather than 5. Am I going to be able to run them in Old World? I wouldn't want to have to use the old derpy cold one riders especially when I know how nice they could look. If I knew I could use kits like these I'd already be buying loads of Seraphon models so I had an army on launch, but GW haven't done a very good job at all communicating or giving confidence to players. The only question is if its profitable for GW, which isn't the same as saying its as big as 40k.

      Sales of Heresy apparently dropped when it became known that miniatures could not be used in 40k. "Legend rules" is rightly considered a grave and costs no more than toilet paper.
      It’s also insulting, of course, how GW took a whole bunch of 40k models to insert into the Heresy - like the Brass Scorpion and the Decimator.

    Age of Sigmar is awful, so yeah we do need it for a proper fantasy setting 💙

    Both the Horus Heresy and the Old World are purely commercial products to make more money for Games Workshop. There is no charity here.
    In this regard, the prospects for the Old World are unclear: "fantasy battles" were closed because they sold poorly. Many people could play, but preferred to buy non-GW models. Historical medieval knights, landsknechts or just generic dwarves or elves. Another way - pirate resin recast. And most importantly: Era of 3D printing now.
    How much can GW earn in such a situation?
    Worst of all: when "fb" was closed, the most toxic elements left the hobby, which is why Age of Sigmar has the friendliest and cheerful Warhammer community.
    Now the grognards and gatekeepers are back. How do you imagine Age of Sigmar and T0W fans being in the same room? Like fox and chiken?

      I think an old world fan and a sigmar fan being in the same room is akin to having to go to a party and your ex that you hate is going to be there 😆

    Nope. The lore of the old world is so stagnant and leaves little to no room for creativity. If I want rank n' flank I'll play Conquest. Fresh takes on fantasy races, fun rules, and amazing 38mm models.

      I'll be honest I'm not super clued up! I know a little but I'm hoping there's some sweet UA-cam channels that can indulge me.
