Good luck on the project, Jordan! Ah, Marienburg. Through the magic of roleplaying I've spent countless hours in that city. Years ago I GM'd a campaign set in Marienburg taking inspiration from the excellent 'Sold Down The River' sourcebook for 1st edition Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay. My players were a rag-tag band of smugglers on board the "fastest hunk of planks on the Reik, The Centennial Sparrow" (a river barge of much renown in the underworld), moving banned goods from Marienburg and into the Empire. Many fond memories!
Thanks Nis, I think I’ll need the luck! I’ve been reading through Sold Down the River and it’s great fun - I’d love to spend some proper game time in the city as PC or GM!
I am a 20 years Warhammer hobbyst and i consider myself above average and let me tell you, bother in art, the task you decided to take is GARGANTUAN so i wish you all the best for your project mate! Also i am beyond excited to see how is going turn out! Game on bro!
Poor Martha, my furrball is sprawled outside in the shade, I know how you feel .. its too hot. Your Empire army concept sounds excellent, the back story sounds good to me, troop register and carry case .. thats so cool to me. I'll walk along with the Trudot baggage train and watch your dream come true. Good luck. Dont worry about those AoS presculpted bases, I've had a few of those and theyre on the most part, not too difficult to deal with, I have my own basing style too.
There is a fantastic article in WD 290 about building themed armies which was my biggest inspiration back in the day. Really excited to see how this army turns out
What allways intrigued me about Marienburg was its esthetic; its unmistakeably Imperial... yet distinct. If you take a look at the Marienburg miniature range from Mordheim, or their entry in 'Heraldry and Uniforms of the Empire' you'll know what I mean. I allways pondered about collecting a Marienburg-Empire army back in the day, but I didn't really know how to realize it... until the release of the Empire Archer / Huntsmen kit. These guys look sooo much like the Mordheim era Marienburgers with their overcoats, that all they're missing is a halberd to make the perfect Marienburg Statetrooper.
I just absolutely love this. I love it when people personalize their armies over just "create a copy of what's popular". Love the lore you have built up. I play Warhammer 40k, and like it when I play a personalized army/chapter with their own scheme and lore.
Absolutely with you on the "my version". If someone has a problem with you using French influences on a fictional human society I think the issue is more with them!
Bloody feckin' dammit Jordan! Now you've done and gotten me excited to write and collect an army with story around it! Been ages since I've done any writing too. And all my disposable (and non-disposable) gear is drifting to guitar gear! 😱
I moved to 40k years ago, but what struck me watching this is just how much more personality there seems to be in the fantasy miniatures compared to so many 40k minis.
I've loved my 40k armies over the years, but I tend to agree - WFB miniatures have always won out for me. Modern Necromunda and Underworlds do some pretty characterful work though too!
I am very excited for this project. In WFRP we spent an awful amount of time there. In our Blood Bowl league we had a Marienburg team and in a recent RPG another Marienburg player. Keep up the excellent work
Thi sounds like a really great project! I’ve just finished a 6th edition Marienburg army and I’m keen to see where you go. Also really looking forward to seeing you ‘making of’ Marienburg video and the Marienburg lore video you mentioned. Keep up the sterling work!
I’m also making a Marienburg army currently! I highly recommend you read the Erkhart Dubnitz Knights of the empire stories for inspiration and also I can’t not recommend manann’s blades! Also Grimforge makes great stuff too!
I agree with you these days you cant find incredible painting works on the internet that provides inspiration. However when trying to start or return to the hobby it also make it harder as you see the incredible gap between you and these guys. It can be overwhelming and ruin your motivation sometimes
It can definitely be tough, I've been watching some more entry level tutorials though and there's some great videos out there - I'm definitely feeling like my ambition is possible! (with a fair bit of work!)
I love the sound of this project! It might be overkill (to have two land ships) but if you can find one (at not too unreasonable a price) the Citadel Arcane Monstrosities TA2 Dwarf Juggernaut would fit right in with your theme and the other dwarf pirate elements. The Mordheim Marienburg Warband might also have some nice pieces, that’d fit in.
Great! Im currently buliding marinburg army also. making every regiment from different house or guild, with special champion in it. But i'm using miniatures not only from GW, but mostly from other producers.
Hi! I'm listening along to your History of Warhammer series and your new Empire army for the Old World series while I re-build my High Elf Army for The Old World! I had a vague idea for a Lothern themed army since I love and have a ton of Sea Guard models. This video has also inspired me to dive deeper into the lore and I've decided to theme my army around Finubar and his sailing expeditions to the Old World since the time period seems the same or quite close to the setting for the new game (I guess we can be a little flexible if it's not). I'm having a blast reading the lore which never really appealed to me before, planning out my army with units that would be fit to travel over the sea (either on a boat or flying) and thinking about what colour scheme to pick! Thanks for your videos and for the inspiration!
I love this project and I'm looking forward to seeing how your army comes along, especially with the heavy lore and roleplay theme you have going on there. And I'd also love to hear more about your favorite D&D character! Abigail sounds awesome.
Fantastic! I’m also doing a similar Herculean WH world build! My goal is trying to do variety over quantity (1-5) for my warhammer fantasy collection then incorporate them into my future HQ, AHQ, WHQ & WHF games.
Leg-swapping with more modern kits worked wonders with some Grey Knights I painted recently, is this something you've considered? An extra millimetre or two makes a big difference visually. Can't wait to see your progress! Good luck!
Loving this project and this video! You're probably way ahead at this point, but I've been doing a ton of rebasing recently (for obvious Old World reasons) and for the sculpted bases like Underworlds or other push-fit models, I'd recommend just clipping the rims off the bases and then you'll have just the model and its "ground" to either continue trimming or glue straight down to a square base.
You’re so inspiring. I tried pitching a fantasy army for one page rules to my gaming group (family) and I think I lost them in the sauce when I started explaining how I wanted to use only Underworld minis with the same armour colour to unify my army.
Well Jordan… your a nutter. I have done this level of difficulty before. A couple times now. Big forces, big models, commissions… pretty much all of it. And looking to do another dwarf army for old world. Perhaps we can post side by side mate 🤣🤘🏻 best of British Jordan 🇬🇧
Fantastic project Jordan, looking forward to see how it goes. I think you may be causing problems for yourself using the ship deck bases though. They look fantastic, however as you are going to using miniatures from lots of periods and styles, you will have models of different heights. The easiest way to model the base as a small mound or have the model stood on a rock, I think those ship deck bases are going to give you a real headache. Good luck, however you go for it, I will be watching closely.
Fab project, narrative grounding, and that box 🙂All the best with your Empire army 🙂I also look forward to your later secret new Under-Empire army 😉 I'm slowly working on all my Skaven. Squeak-squeak! 🤩🐀🌠
I like to put some rogue trader models in my modern 40k armies and i made really good experiences with rocks and steps on bases to mitigate the height difference. Sounds simple, but works really efficient. Consistency will mainly come from color choices. That is a bit tricky, because pirates and marienburg are known for colorful fabrics. Maybe you could try to limit yourself to a certain palette (Zorn Palette is the most famous in the world of warhammer, if you like blanchitsu-vibes) or you go full tricolore with the french theme.
That’s a nice idea to consider the tricolore! I think you’re right re base features to try and keep everyone roughly in scale, I’m sourcing some crates and barrels to see if they might work
The collecting is going well, the painting? Well, I've had to seek council from wiser modelling minds to help me get started! Looking forward to sharing progress!
Dogs of war would be a great source of minis for your army idea, wonder if Gw will bring them back in the Old World. I rather play/build an army with a cool solid story behind even if it's not gona win any competicion. The best part of our hobby is to be able to imagine the world and background of the minis we build and paint. At the end of the project you'll be a better painter for sure.
Late to the party - what an inspirational video. I really get your passion for this project and hope to learn more about the Trudot family (especially the politics!)
I love the emphasis on story. That's always been my favorite element of these games and the guiding force for how I built the armies that I inevitably lost games with as well. 😆 Can't wait to see the progress and read the stories!
I work in the wine industry and I would love to see your narritive. If you ever want to chat wine making give me a shout. Awesome video, keep up your stella work! Ps just read the first part and its great. It really reminds me of Alsace as a region with that blend of Geman/Empire and France/ Britonia. Looking forward to reading more.
Dude this is exactly what I’m planning on doing. I can’t wait to see what you do to give me ideas for my empire army. I’m so excited to see your progress.
This sounds like a great project! I never really ever managed to field a completely painted force for any game until lockdown gave me a load of free time for painting, and even then I've only managed to fully paint warbands and small armies, so I know a big army that requires a lot of modelling work will be an epic undertaking. Might there be a space in the army for Big April, the best bounty hunter in all of Marienburg and the Wasteland?
This sounds so incredibly cool! I cannot WAIT to see your progress on this army and, honestly, it has inspired me to do that myself! I've been wanting to build some armies before the release of Old World and this has energized me to piecemeal cool miniatures from across time into my own forces! This kind of journey, to me, is the epitome of what the entire hobby is all about!
Hi there. Just wanted to wish you well for the challenge you have taken on board! Also, if you want any help or advice on simple, effective painting techniques, please ask. I know one or two short cuts that won't win you any awards but will give you an army worthy of any table!
I've recently got back into minature building and collecting, Kitbashing an army for turnip 28. Regarding the size difference concerns you touched on. I've come up with the same problem, but I'm using it to my advantage as people are all different shapes and sizes. Making all my units more unique
Nice! That's a great choice, I'll be happy to follow you along. I'm in the progress of building my ultimate hobby dream army, strictly 6th ed Tomb Kings, no newfangled 8th ed plastics (I quite dislike those). I already have acquired models for over 2000pts, but I'm still missing a few units that were available during 6th ed which I'll add in when I can find them for a bearable price. I luckily had saved around 1000pts of TK back from 2003 from an army I never finished which I'm in the process of painting. I love the painting side and I'm putting around 15-20 hours per skeleton, as I want to really honor these great classic miniatures. 16 skeletons done so far out of the 60 I need for my current 2000pts list and out of the 100 I have, not to mention all the other models. :D Oh well, I'll be done in around 3-4 years...
@@jordansorcery Indeed! They mentioned bringing back some metal kits, so I wouldn't be surprised to see something like the Ushabti back in production. Fingers crossed!
Fantastic concept for an army, Jordan. I love the idea of mixing minis from different eras and you've chosen some very cool and synergistic models. Can't wait to see how it comes out :)
You could do a campaign where you start with a small force at the start and as u paint and add to the army, Troudo (not sure on the spelling) is recruiting mercenary in the narrative of the army! Anywho, I’m really excited to see this come to life, love the passion mate!😊❤
I used to see the painting as a chore too, even though I REALLY enjoyed the modelling, converting - even cleaning up the models.. Still regard painting a little bit as a chore.. But i do it, to tabletop standard, as I want a painted army.. :) Nice to follow this!
Love the rich background you are thinking up and love to hear more about Marienburg, one of the fav places in WHFRPG for me. The Empire is so interesting and rich in background. Sadly often overlooked by people that just looks for the "best" armies and ignore the Empire.. Love the army list thing and the box too. Great stuff!
I’m very interested in following this “Tale of One Gamer” 😅 Although I never played WHFB or WHRP[1], I have an odd fondness for the setting - I still have the issue of White Dwarf from the 80s wherein the Pelican’s Perch is detailed..! [1]For a variety of reasons, not least shyness.
In 3rd edition my Empire general was a model I got in a citadel box of (I believe) heroic fighters, it was a fully armoured human with a 2 handed axe and a sallet helm with the classic Blanche-like grinning moon. He was used as a here in all the following editions as well, when needed. I am pretty sure I still have him, with my original (not bad at all to begin with) paintjob improved several times over the ages. Maybe you could do something like that as well? Aesthetic wise, he would need to be resculpted to modern standards, but I guess his overall looks could also work in Cities of Sigmar forces. Hope you enjoy your voyage. One thing, though....Trudeau? Really? The name summons vileness and political madness more at home in a Skaven army :P
@@jordansorcery you lucky so and so… hopefully you didn’t have to take out a mortgage?! This project looks amazing, I guess just pave yourself since you’re not used to this amount of painting and converting
So ,in your version of Old World, Bretonnia is inspired from Old versions ( like the Bretonnia of Genevieve and Charles de la Tete D'Or III) or the "newest" ( Luoen and Arthurian stuff ) ?
I just checked this out and that is a great sculpt! I'm aiming to stick to Citadel (and Marauder) miniatures only for this project, but I'm tempted to get one of these anyway!
I think you're right - I was just especially startled when I compared Hexbane's Hunter's to some 6th edition state troopers - those bases and hats given them a real advantage!
This is my first comment, and i want to tell you how good is your channel! This looks like a marvellous project! If I can help you somehow, please write to me! I paint and convert armies since 1995 so I've got quite the experience!
I think technically it wouldn't exist for more than a century after TOW, but I'm thinking there might be an even more experimental proto-landship knocking around!
Don't forget that in former WHFB and WFRP editions Marienburg had a Sea Elf quarter!
Ah, Sea Elves! Always seemed a shamed they were just rolled in to High Elves in 4th in such an anonymous way.
Great shout, I definitely want to get a Sea Elf or two in the army somehow!
Good luck on the project, Jordan!

Hopefully they bring back some older TK stuff when the Old World range finally makes it back to stores! There were some fantastic Tomb Kings kits
Cheers Scott, I just hope I can pull it all together!
You could do a campaign where you start with a small force at the start and as u paint and add to the army, Troudo (not sure on the spelling) is recruiting mercenary in the narrative of the army! Anywho, I’m really excited to see this come to life, love the passion mate!😊❤
Love this idea!
I think me not loving painting is why I got into blood bowl can get a team done in a few nights ha
I used to see the painting as a chore too, even though I REALLY enjoyed the modelling, converting - even cleaning up the models.. Still regard painting a little bit as a chore.. But i do it, to tabletop standard, as I want a painted army.. :)
Nice to follow this!
It’s an odd one, because I am always pleased to have done the modelling and painting - the result feels good - but the effort often eludes me!
@@jordansorcery Sounds like we are similar.. ;)
I’m very interested in following this “Tale of One Gamer” 😅
Although I never played WHFB or WHRP[1], I have an odd fondness for the setting - I still have the issue of White Dwarf from the 80s wherein the Pelican’s Perch is detailed..!
[1]For a variety of reasons, not least shyness.
Tale of One Gamer - perfect!
This video instantly had Martha in it, therefore as per the rules I was complied to give an instant thumbs up.
Yay! Someone found a use for those gargoyles
The travelogue sounds very interesting.
Love your warhammer vids, please could you cover the emeny within rpg campaign sometime in future.
I would love to spend some time on the Enemy Within - though that would be a mega project! Maybe one day!
@@jordansorcery fingers crossed
In the meantime, if you ever want it, I can share all the stuff that I made for my rp. I am the one who made Barda incident happen recently.
Random. I literally just decided the same after playing WHTW3 and using a mod to unlock Marienburg. Probably using a bunch of Highland minis STL’s
Oh my you're doing Marienburg! That would by my choice too! Love the colours of the army. Question is, can you get hold of the land ship?!
I managed to score one earlier this year, but every time I look at the pieces it’s like when they open the Ark of the Covenant in Indy
@@jordansorcery you lucky so and so… hopefully you didn’t have to take out a mortgage?! This project looks amazing, I guess just pave yourself since you’re not used to this amount of painting and converting
If I remember correctly, Marienburg had a large number of Norscan traders should you ever need a Free Company.
This is a fun idea!
im building a Marienburg Mercenary force for Kings of War (kingdoms of men)
So ,in your version of Old World, Bretonnia is inspired from Old versions ( like the Bretonnia of Genevieve and Charles de la Tete D'Or III) or the "newest" ( Luoen and Arthurian stuff ) ?
I think there'll be a fair bit of both, but I do like the classic flavour of Bretonnia a lot
@@jordansorcery can i suggest you a mod about Marienburg for TWW 3? Is full of possible ideas for your Marienbourgese Army.
Vae Victus do a lady landsnekt (greadsworder) who would work perfectly for you, if you don’t mind 3D printing
I just checked this out and that is a great sculpt! I'm aiming to stick to Citadel (and Marauder) miniatures only for this project, but I'm tempted to get one of these anyway!
The scale isn't as bad as you think. Humans come in all dhaos and sizes. A bit of variakce is ok. So long as it's the 28 to 32 mm.
I think you're right - I was just especially startled when I compared Hexbane's Hunter's to some 6th edition state troopers - those bases and hats given them a real advantage!
Check out titan forge scarlet crusades part 2 bases i think they would be perfect for you!
Oh they look good!
Dont worry about being to french for the Empire as Marienburg was independant from the Empire and was full of mercenaries
This is my first comment, and i want to tell you how good is your channel! This looks like a marvellous project! If I can help you somehow, please write to me! I paint and convert armies since 1995 so I've got quite the experience!
Thank you!
Does the landship exist in the Old World setting?
I think technically it wouldn't exist for more than a century after TOW, but I'm thinking there might be an even more experimental proto-landship knocking around!
always liked the idea of a Empire army with a unit of elven marines and dwarfs to protect there interests ...using pirates is much better.
I like this idea too - I think there'll definitely be a Sea Elf or two in the army!
@@jordansorcery Yeah !!!...would work better in WH than Warmaster.
really suggest u keep em on 20mm bases, ive done some tests with 25 and they look pretty bad. Too much space between shoulders.
Yes, it's definitely not cardigan weather - sadly
The biggest downside of summer!
