A bit overstated, but I feel you. If they had produced more of this sort of work as opposed to moving into commercial sound after the first two albums... perhaps went acoustic side 1 / electric side 2 or something, they might have been more recognized. I think their commercial stuff was creative, but lacked the soul this album had.
There was a lot more that happened to Steven Page. He actually came to my university and gave a talk to the first-years. He had a lot of problems with mental illness that he was having problems dealing with. He's actually doing a lot of good what he's doing now, he very actively involved in Mental Health Awareness and that's a very noble thing.
Some people try to put other people in a box or pretend they are made of plastic. There isn't an easy solution to us we are all complex. If he is doing good and cares about what he does then no one has a justifiable reason to do anything but support him.
I do not believe they play some of the older songs that are so associated Steven Page's unique and powerful voice... What a Good Boy, Jane, Break Your Heart. Others work and I like Ed Robertson or others voices. I love those songs, but some you could not do justice w/o Page.
Featured this song at my brother's funeral last year... He took his own life at 33 yrs of age. We grew up with BNL. Gordan is one of my favourite albums.

I first heard this song on an episode of Homicide Life on the Street. It was a Thanksgiving episode themed episode too. My mom passed away a couple weeks ago, and I’m in your exact situation. I hope you’re doing well.
@@dabearcub thanks man, you too. I don't know anything about u, your age, whatever, but I'm sure when when someone loses their mom it's the same at practically any age. Hang in there. I love it. BNL rock. I got into them back in the 90's and no-one I knew had heard of them. A cople of us were playing guitar and stuff and my best mate and I got into them. My favorite BnL song (although One Week) is catchy. Had never heard it until it was used during the closing minutes of an episode of "Homicide: Life on the Street".

What a voice this guy has. One of the most unique voices ever. You can always tell almost immediately it's Barenaked Ladies.
This song's got a Tracy Chapman-vibe.
Steven Pages voice… wow.

Saw them in concert last night in Columbia SC and they didn't play this! I was sooooo bummed. It is, by far, my favorite song ever.

When I was born
They looked at me and said
What a good boy
What a smart boy
What a strong boy
And when you were born
They looked at you and said
What a good girl
What a smart girl
What a pretty girl
We've got these chains
Hanging 'round our necks
People want to strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
Afraid of change
Afraid of staying the same
When temptation calls
We just look away
This name is the hair shirt I wear
And this hair shirt is woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
But be with me tonight
I go to school
I write exams
If I pass if I fail if I drop out
Does anyone give a damn?
And if they do
They'll soon forget
'Cause it won't take much for me
To show my life ain't over yet
I wake up scared
I wake up strange
I wake up wondering if anything in my life
Is ever gonna change
I wake up scared
I wake up strange
And everything around me stays the same
It's the hair shirt I wear
And this hair shirt is woven from
It's woven from your brown hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight
I know that it isn't right
But be with me tonight
I couldn't tell you
I was wrong
Chickened out grabbed a pen and a paper
Sat down and I wrote this song
I couldn't tell you
That you were right
So instead I looked in the mirror
Watched TV, laid awake all night
We've got these chains
Hanging round our necks
People want to strangle us with them
Before we take our first breath
Afraid of change
Afraid of staying the same
When temptation calls, yeah
This name is the hair shirt I wear
And this hair shirt is woven from
It's woven from
It's woven from hair
This song is the cross that I bear
Bear with me
Bear with me
Bear with me
Be with me tonight
And when I was born
They looked at me and said
What a good boy
What a smart boy
What a strong boy
And when you were born
They looked at you and said
What a good girl
What a smart girl
What a pretty girl, yeah, yeah

Most underrated and BEST song they ever made!

This is as good if not better than any other song the Ladies ever did. It surprises me how overlooked it is. Steven at his absolute best.
@Envoy Lovers in a Dangerous Time is very good as well. Bruce Cockburn is criminally underrecognized, but the Ladies improved on that one.
@Envoy I was fortunate enough to see Bruce in person playing at a bar in Minneapolis. A couple hundred people.
