Fun fact: Steve Page wrote this song as a teenager. He will sometimes tell the story when performing live. It’s not just a fun tribute to Brian Wilson, it’s a song about mental health. Page (and the whole band really) are on another level when it comes to musical melodies and story telling. If you get the chance, see him live. And the Bare Naked Ladies. Not sure if we would ever get a reunion tour, but if so, it would be a dream come true for the fans.

    • @peterg.newton3257

Page's split (2009) from Barenaked Ladies was prompted by his bandmates. He had been arrested for cocaine possession. Plus there were rumours about other serious inappropriate behaviour. There is zero chance of a reunion. He did perform with them in 2018 to receive an award at the Junos. It is very unfortunate cuz he was an important member of the band.

I ran to his apartment as fast as I could, and had to kick in the door. He was laying on the ground overdosed, near death. We threw him in the bed of a pickup and drove him to the ER. He survived that, but sadly, 8 years later, I no longer believe he is with us.

Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night,
just to check out the late-night record shop.
    Call it impulsive, call it compulsive, call it insane;
but when I'm surrounded I just can't stop.
It's a matter of instinct, it's a matter of conditioning,
    It's a matter of fact.
You can call me Pavlov's dog
Ring a bell and I'll salivate- how'd you like that?
Dr. Landy tell me you're not just a pedagogue,
    cause right now I'm
    [Chorus]
Lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did
Well I'm lying in bed just like Brian Wilson did.
So I'm lying here, just staring at the ceiling tiles.
and I'm thinking about what to think about.
Just listening and relistening to Smiley Smile,
and I'm wondering if this is some kind of creative drought
    because I am
    [Chorus]
And if you want to find me I'll be out in the sandbox,
wondering where the hell all the love has gone.
Playing my guitar and building castles in the sun,
    and singing "Fun, Fun, Fun."
    [Chorus]
I had a dream that I was three hundred pounds
and though I was very heavy,
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
I floated 'til I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
Somebody help me, I couldn't see the ground
    Somebody help me because I'm
    [Chorus]
Drove downtown in the rain nine-thirty on a Tuesday night.

The mid to late 90's, in my opinion, were the best songs ever in a generation. That's a lot to say from a guy who lived thru the 80's. BNL, Tonic, Vertical Horizon, Third Eye Blind, Dave Matthews...

A gospel is an account describing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. I don't think this song has ANYthing to do with that. So I wouldn't call it a Gospel song.

  • @DalleDayul

I honestly think this song massively shaped the trajectory of Barenaked Ladies.
This was from BNL's debut album, and while it definitely still had many tongue-in-cheek songs, songs like this still showed a seriousness and a vulnerability. But, people didn't take the song seriously. Some saw it as more of a mocking put-down against Wilson, others just saw it as quirky and goofy, since that's what they expected from BNL.
I think that reception probably solidified the band's decision to stick to a more quirky, light-hearted tone for their future music. And while I do love BNL's music, I do wonder if we missed out on a lot more songs like this because of the reception it received.
Either way, I think this is undeniably their best song, and it's a testament to just how good a songwriter Steven Page is.
