A gospel is an account describing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. I don't think this song has ANYthing to do with that. So I wouldn't call it a Gospel song.

I honestly think this song massively shaped the trajectory of Barenaked Ladies. This was from BNL's debut album, and while it definitely still had many tongue-in-cheek songs, songs like this still showed a seriousness and a vulnerability. But, people didn't take the song seriously. Some saw it as more of a mocking put-down against Wilson, others just saw it as quirky and goofy, since that's what they expected from BNL. I think that reception probably solidified the band's decision to stick to a more quirky, light-hearted tone for their future music. And while I do love BNL's music, I do wonder if we missed out on a lot more songs like this because of the reception it received. Either way, I think this is undeniably their best song, and it's a testament to just how good a songwriter Steven Page is.
The way they melded the lyrics and music was sublime. I saw them 3/20/2001, the last show of their tour, in Albany NY. Hearing this song live was fantastic. They rocked!

**Profound statement about how this song relates to the era in which I grew up and how music hasn't been as good since.
The mid to late 90's, in my opinion, were the best songs ever in a generation. That's a lot to say from a guy who lived thru the 80's. BNL, Tonic, Vertical Horizon, Third Eye Blind, Dave Matthews...
Dave Matthews & his band would play bars clubs; UVA area Richmond. I met him 2X 1990s. Nice guy, low key.
It was extremely underrated. Not sure I can put it up with the early 80s but it’s really high quality era
wow, this has to be one of my favorite Barenaked Ladies songs ever! So beautiful!
Brian Wilson is a very talented singer and he has this magical voice and lyrics that I love💕 his songs will never be forgotten in this world🌎. Tell me since when I’ve you been listening to Brian songs?
Brian Wilson is pretty much my deity, This is the best gospel song ever.
A gospel is an account describing the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth. I don't think this song has ANYthing to do with that. So I wouldn't call it a Gospel song.

He's just making a joke, chill.
MrThetronica The joke is that Brian Wilson was her deity.

'Gospel music usually has dominant vocals (often with strong use of harmony) with Christian lyrics.' Sounds like a gospel song to me.
oshawaxpress how is this "Christian" lyrics?
Best song of all time!
What a great tribute to Brian Wilson; makes me happy to know some band made a song in his honor
I understand this in so many ways....it helps me feel better & get out of bed.✊👊
Blessings in an abundance of the faith. I salute you. 😘🙏 Grace and peace be unto you and to this place. Thank you. God bless you. 😊Will you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your LORD and personal saviour??? I do. 😊
I liked this group when I was younger, but now I'm really impressed how creative and clean their lyrics are. Nice rhythm too
Same. They were my favorite band as a kid in the 90s, but I didn't truly appreciate their genius until I was well into adulthood.
Everyone always brings up Steven and Ed but the drummer is highly underrated
Everything about this music video completely embraces what we think of the 90s
Start to finish "Gordon" is one of thee most innovative, fun and enjoyable albums of the last 30 years. Every song on it is a true work of art.
When I saw Brian Wilson live, he actually opened the show with this song. It was very odd.
Kind of fitting for Brian than LOL
I was just wondering if he ever reacted to this! Thanks for solving that personal riddle of mine 😁
Yes, he did!
Wow!
“I’m lying in bed, just like Brian Wilson did”
“is... is he talking in the third person...?”
Song is the best. And so’s Brian Wilson- an icon and absolute genius !! I love the min in of the “surf sound” to get the vibe up.

WOW, this is a great song. How did I miss it all those years🤔🤔
I just feel good when I hear this song! It's just got everything. Intelligent lyrics with humor and a good beat! OMG love the retro bass/
My favorite song from the modern era. An incredible work.
This song is so great it's amazing these young men did such mature and sophisticated music like this , so much good memories tied with this I had the cassette and wore it out
Brilliant!!! Saw them in concert in Detroit...unbelievable!!!

I remember seeing these guys, when "if I had a million dollars" just came out,it was in Moose Jaw Saskatchewan,at an outdoor concert, I think it was around 1993, they were just AWESOME, I wish Steven Page would re-join the group. I think this is their BEST song ever!!!!
Thank you for this version; I almost always have to settle for the live version instead.
I love these guys. I grew up listening to them in the 90s, my very first tape AND CD was Gordon. I got to see them live before they broke up - what a wonderful experience. Thank you for all the memories and great music!
God there is nothing like his voice.
I really miss checking out the late night record shops!
