My sister had breast cancer and it matasised in 2016. She was a musician 38 years and she loved listening to her favorite artists. Tom Petty was one of them, I loved him too since a teenager. She was given 4 tickets to his last tour and was promised to meet him. Tom was so kind to her and wanted to sing with her unfortunately, her hair was all gone and she felt self conscious to do so. He treated my big sister like a queen. Gave her autographs, memorabilia, every tshirt from his last concert and any product they were selling on tour. He whispered in my sisters ear, I will see you again one day Laury.. She died in June 2017 Tom Petty passed in October 2017, We lost 2 wonderful people and musicians. I am sure they are playing guitars and serenading heaven... I am very grateful my sisters dream came true and couldnt have been with a nicer man.. Thank you Tom Petty

I just watched the video of Tom Petty's *Free Fallin'* It brought back memories of my first year in Budapest in 92/93 when I lived in a one-bedroom apartment in a four-unit house on "Eagle Hill" with a balcony overlooking a modest garden. I would often exercise to that tune and the others on that album. I can recall the smells of that time and the liberation I felt living there in that freshly post-communist world so far away from my uncle's fabric store in Rochester, hospitals and all things American. I was free falling right along with old Tom. So bittersweet to recall, three decades later.
My dad used to sing this song when I was a little girl. He did it to be funny and because he liked the song. After he died I couldn't listen to this song without crying. Now 15 years later it still bring back memories but I love hearing it now. When I hear it I feel like he's saying hello from heaven. I have changed the meaning in my mind. I'm the "good girl" who loves Elvis, her mama, America, horses etc. and he's a "bad boy for breakin my heart" by leaving me when he passed. He doesn't even miss me because he's still with me, I just miss him because I can't see him. He's writing my name in the sky, left the world for awhile, etc. anyway, this is a great song and means a lot to me.

Damn. I'll never forget, ten years ago, when I played "Free Fallin'" on my cd boombox for 24 hours straight in my college dorm after a brutal 6 hours of back-to-back final exams in physics, physical chemistry and advanced calculus as I lay in bed, in and out of sleep the entire day. Thanks for the incomparable music, Tom Petty; the Pearly Gates await.
My Dad bought me my first concert tickets, Tom Petty, and we went and saw him at the Greek theatre together, and Stevie nicks was his special guest. Such a great concert. Now I can’t listen to him without missing my Dad. RIP Dad. Miss you every day.
Man, that’s one great memoir of your dad link to this song. Must have been an awesome day. They do say life is all about making treasured memories. I’m sure your dad’s up there singing this song with Tom, god bless.

I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
Yeah my father took me to see him for the first time when I was 7 years old. I was hooked. Got to meet him a couple of times during his life as I got older. He was so sincere and humble. We played this song at my father's memorial service years ago when he died. Brings back alot of memories

My dad is about to pass. We jammed out to this song on the way to the waterpark for so many years when I was a child. He got into skydiving later in life. This song will forever have a place in my heart. Love you pops ❤
This song really holds a special place in my heart. My daughter used to sing this with me in the car when she was little. Just goes to show you how music paints memories in our lives. Thanks Tom Petty. Songs like this shows why you are a legend...
musicmankenn dude that's awesome, me and my daughter have a bunch of songs we love singing together also, started her at 5. And now she is 9 and actually requests these songs on the drive to school every morning , makes me lower it when we get close to school though lol , got forbid her friends may actually hear real musicians right .....
musicmankenn that is super sad. I wish he was still here. My step mom started to cry when she hered what happened! My brother and me would sing a bunch of his songs and we still do
I know exactly what you mean. You probably associate a certain broad emotion with the song… every time you feel a certain happy feeling the song starts playing in your head…
It’s never returning. Mass migration and government propaganda has killed western culture. Inflation and re-education camps are returning though. 60s, 70s, and 80s were the last great burst of humanity before it’s decline. Do you ever think about how there is no longer cultural definitions of the decades? 60s - beads, flowers, peace, love. 70s- bell bottoms, rock n roll 80s - Synth music, neon colors, etc. etc. Now, 2010s - ??? 2020s-??? The cultural enlightenment of the western world has been extinguished. Our culture consists of corporate fashion, corporate designed architecture, bland corporate cities, corporate controlled social movements. Anybody that is old enough to have experienced the 80s or even the 90s knows what I mean. Something was vibrant in life and culture in those days. Whatever “it” was is missing today. I feel like 9/11 was the catalyst for the shift, or a result of the shift taking place. Schizophrenic rant over.
RIP, Tom I've listened to your voice since I was a little boy watching my father struggle to maintain. Thank God, for you're talent, your spirit, and the blessing you are to us all. LEGENDS NEVER DIE.
The saddest thing is that I don’t have a chance to listen to him Live 😔😔. The happiest thing is that we are blessed to enjoy his unique art and legacy. I love Tom Petty 💚❤️
When I was 16, I went on vacation to the US with my parents and we did a helicopter flight through the Grand Canyon. The pilot played this song and managed to time it in such a way that the chorus kicked in at the exact moment we were passing a cliff and the canyon would open up in front of us. It was amazing.
Isn't it awe-inspiring when events line up almost perfectly in life? Your Grand Canyon story is a phenomenal example of that. Sounds like a fantastic experience!
Wow must have been a nice experience. But isn't it too loud in a helicopter to listen to a song? I guess the volume of the song must have been loud also
I listen to your music all the time, I am cancer free for life now. I had stage 1b ovarian cancer thank you to a kidney stone, that saved my life. I didn't need no treatment treatment.
Ever since Tom died, half his songs bring tears to my eyes. Had to take them off my playlists that I use while commuting, people look at you strangely, if you have tears running down your face, just sitting in a bus or train. Still listen to his songs all the time.
Many people seem incapable of reading a complete post. I wrote that I removed his songs from the playlists I listen to while commuting, but that I still listen to his songs all the time. You know, in private in my home.
A true classic! I remember the day this was released: I just came home from high school with my best friend, we sat and listened to this song, and the second it was over we said to each other simultaneously - "Man,... that's just a perfect song!"... And 30 years later I feel the same.
I it a favorite of life for me...released when i was about 25, i am not sure, i did not check, and unforgetable for me because of tom cruise i ine of his best movies (for me)....Jerey mcquire ...just google Tom cruise, free falling and you will find it on youtube....
Well... He's officially made good on his word. He's left this world... The legend learned to fly. Rest in peace Tom, you are officially immortalized through your music. The world is a little quieter without your wonderful voice.
Tom Petty ist one of the coolest song writers and musicians of all times!! He had an unbelievable cool voice. God, why did you pass so soon, Tom? The world became a better place because of your music!
I have heard this song so many times i would turn the radio down or change the station. Going into work the other morning and i turned it up and i thought the same thing you posted.
Happy birthday to the all-time great Tom Petty. Much as I never got to see him in concert, I will appreciate his contribution to the music industry now more than ever. RIP, man. Miss you. Never truly knew what I had in you until earlier this year.
Rock In Peace Tom, thanks for your flawless music legacy and make my childhood the best time of my life. Still remember enjoying this gem on Xmas '89 #Legendsneverdie 💔💔💔💔💔💔💔
For me, as a person from Poland, watching this music video back in 1989 felt like looking at some kind of alternative reality in another galaxy. Today, I still see it the same way, but now it’s no longer distant in space, but in time.
Don't cry because he is gone, smile because he was here. R.I.P Tom Petty... edit: why tf does this have so many likes. edit 2: not to be that guy but thanks for the likes. nice to see everyone coming together on the replies to the comment, ill try to respond to new replies in the future. the line "gonna leave this world for a while" hits hard. his impact on music is great, his time here was legendary, we were lucky to have shared the same time with him when we did, and we should all be incredibly grateful for it. theres not a day that goes by where i dont think about him and his legacy, and even though hes gone, we can still live that legacy as many times as we want. ill say it again, R.I.P Tom Petty.
This is such a great song. Simple but amazing. This is one of my go to songs when I want to just sit back and drift away from the realities of life. I will be forever grateful to Tom Petty for producing it.🥰👍❤

As a Brit growing up in the 90s, this is one of the songs that made me obsessed with America and the general concept of the middle American idyll and the American dream.
That's strange because when you watch carefully, the video is critical towards the bully-like approach in the relationships. The song is great but it does not really praise America.
It reminds me of skateboarding and punk rock, growing up in the 90's. Obviously, this music is not punk, but the guy skating on the ramp looks exactly like my friend's older brother back then. Except he had a green mohawk and listened to The Cramps.
My Mother took me to see Tom petty and the heartbreakers at the age of 11, We flew from Detroit to South Carolina, It was one of the most epic most awesome times of my life, Rip Mom fly high.....
A song about leaving a woman you love cause of how much she helped you and changed you for the better but made you realize you ain’t ready yet. Iconic song.
The intro is one of the best I've ever heard.... And this as a whole is perhaps one of the best songs of all time. "Free Falling" is a jewel for all who was raised in the valley's. Tom Petty have moved from a great singer to an icon. God bless him.... Petty's work will be always remembered. What a great song for pete sakes 🧏🏼♀️🔥
Tom Petty gave me the courage to leave my husband that was an abuse relationship. Thanks to my coz Calvin. I got saved with his music. Learning to fly was the hardest thing I had to do. I love Tom Petty. May he RIP. Now that I'm safe. Thank you Tom, forever in my heart.
Could listen to this everyday, and almost do! How on earth can a 3-chord song be so good? Because simplicity is beautiful, this masterpiece really has "it", this song takes me to far away places and lifts me up, feeling anything is possible. I'm free. Freefallin'!
It's still like yesterday. Much love to all the people who grew up in the 60s 70s and 80s and to all the artists that have come and gone. We had the best life culture and the greatest music talent.
this may be the best song ever written...so simple yet so perfect. you can't listen to this without it making you feel free even though you know you are fallin'

And remember the world Meets no one half way, if you want it go get it and never let anyone tell you that can't do something. RIP Tommy P
Don Halverson Beats the hell out of crap like "Wrecking Ball".
well said Don--tomorrow ain't promised to nobody as one woman told me years ago
Well they're thankfully still waiting because Tom isn't dead yet.
Were you trying to psychologically torture your roommate? God how awful.
GOD invited Tom into HIS Heavenly Palace so we could have GODLY music to fill our ears.
I’m sure your dad’s up there singing this song with Tom, god bless.
rest in peace to yo Dad!
God Bless you for keeping him alive in your heart. You will see him again.
Beautiful Honey 🥰
I’m so sorry bro rip dad😕🙏🏻
I will always remember Tom at the Gorge Ampitheater, 5th row center, the wind blowin his scarf sideways, singing along to this jem of a song. RIP Tom.
I hope you’re resting well, Tom. I’m sorry I never got to hear ya play live, but I’m so grateful for your music. 💛

don't worry, everybody learns to fly :')
I can't believe it😓😓😓😓
17, this music helped my fucking depression and he died, yesterday i cried a lot. never cried over an artist.
ghedi yea me too man .. I was.bailing like a baby ...these artist don't realize how much they help people like you & me that suffer from depression.. it freaking sucks 😞
That was cool
This maybe 25 years old, but it still sounds modern, a top tune.
Yeah! I thought this song was modern too! I think all of today's music sounds like this! I didn't know it was this old!
Andrew Todaro Are you stupid? Modern music does not sound like this.
Alex Newtian
Alex Newtian Modern music will never beat the classics. The "Student's surpass their masters" rule doesn't apply with people like Miley Cyrus and Nicki Manaj who get popular from the things they do not the music they make. If you could even call it music.
Alex Newtian thats right because modern music sounds like shit next to this.
I was fortunate to meet Tom Petty back in 1990. He was the most nicest
sincere man I ever spoken to. He did not have the..I am a rock star
attitude..I have posted this on many of Tom's songs..He was just so nice
and down to earth. I miss him and I can not stop my tears for him.We
LOVE you Tom, ROCK IN PEACE..You are at the room at the top.
Yeah my father took me to see him for the first time when I was 7 years old. I was hooked. Got to meet him a couple of times during his life as I got older. He was so sincere and humble. We played this song at my father's memorial service years ago when he died. Brings back alot of memories
That's as bout as much obsequious treacle as I have ever seen crammed into one paragraph...kudos... er, most greatest kudos.
Wait did Tom petty died?

Rip Tom.. this comment is everything..
My dad is about to pass. We jammed out to this song on the way to the waterpark for so many years when I was a child. He got into skydiving later in life. This song will forever have a place in my heart. Love you pops ❤
Take care.
God Bless you and your pops
Play this at his funeral
@ that would be heartfelt🙏❤️
Some of the best music ever produced, long live Tom Petty.
And now she is 9 and actually requests these songs on the drive to school every morning , makes me lower it when we get close to school though lol , got forbid her friends may actually hear real musicians right .....
musicmankenn my first memory is with this song when I was 4
musicmankenn that is super sad. I wish he was still here. My step mom started to cry when she hered what happened! My brother and me would sing a bunch of his songs and we still do

I know exactly what you mean. You probably associate a certain broad emotion with the song… every time you feel a certain happy feeling the song starts playing in your head…
@@TheLamana39 My son -in-law looks so much like Tom Petty...
I keep saying it: Tom Petty, one of the best songwriters of his generation. Poignant, beautiful, just real. I love this man.
RIP Tom Petty (October 20, 1950 - October 2, 2017), aged 66

Here because Tom was the bomb, never mind the lockdown.
Something nostalgic about this song, takes me back to a happier place, a place I hope returns soon.

This song does the same thing for me.

The saddest thing is that I don’t have a chance to listen to him Live 😔😔. The happiest thing is that we are blessed to enjoy his unique art and legacy. I love Tom Petty 💚❤️

Thanks to Tom for all the great songs and he is a legend .Rest in peace.
One of the most beautiful pieces of music ever written. Culturally significant to the golden era of music in the US and UK in the 80"s
I would say that golden age started in the 60s and 70s and extended into the 90s ending around the 2000 mark.
Tom Petty was a brilliant figure in history. Great songs.

When I was 16, I went on vacation to the US with my parents and we did a helicopter flight through the Grand Canyon. The pilot played this song and managed to time it in such a way that the chorus kicked in at the exact moment we were passing a cliff and the canyon would open up in front of us. It was amazing.
That's awesome
Isn't it awe-inspiring when events line up almost perfectly in life? Your Grand Canyon story is a phenomenal example of that. Sounds like a fantastic experience!
Sitting in a helicopter and hear something about "free falling"? 🤔 Hm, I don't know.
Wow must have been a nice experience. But isn't it too loud in a helicopter to listen to a song? I guess the volume of the song must have been loud also
What a legend!
I listen to your music all the time, I am cancer free for life now. I had stage 1b ovarian cancer thank you to a kidney stone, that saved my life. I didn't need no treatment treatment.
First album was Greatest Hits. Thank you so much
Ever since Tom died, half his songs bring tears to my eyes. Had to take them off my playlists that I use while commuting, people look at you strangely, if you have tears running down your face, just sitting in a bus or train.
Still listen to his songs all the time.
You'll put them back sometime in the future.
Same.. just isn't the same
It sounded like you really didn’t want to go, and that’s ok.
Many people seem incapable of reading a complete post.
I wrote that I removed his songs from the playlists I listen to while commuting, but that I still listen to his songs all the time.
You know, in private in my home.
You mean it's strange to ride public transportation with tears running down your face, in 2020?
A true classic! I remember the day this was released: I just came home from high school with my best friend, we sat and listened to this song, and the second it was over we said to each other simultaneously - "Man,... that's just a perfect song!"... And 30 years later I feel the same.

He managed to find a new audience every 2 years and always kept the music just as fresh!

For me, as a person from Poland, watching this music video back in 1989 felt like looking at some kind of alternative reality in another galaxy. Today, I still see it the same way, but now it’s no longer distant in space, but in time.
Don't cry because he is gone, smile because he was here.
R.I.P Tom Petty...
edit: why tf does this have so many likes.
edit 2: not to be that guy but thanks for the likes. nice to see everyone coming together on the replies to the comment, ill try to respond to new replies in the future. the line "gonna leave this world for a while" hits hard. his impact on music is great, his time here was legendary, we were lucky to have shared the same time with him when we did, and we should all be incredibly grateful for it. theres not a day that goes by where i dont think about him and his legacy, and even though hes gone, we can still live that legacy as many times as we want. ill say it again, R.I.P Tom Petty.

what he died. omg I love u Tom Petty. How did he die? Does anyone know?
Sara -- he had a heart attack on Monday morning 2nd Oct.; his wife found him unconscious, and that night he died in the hospital. He was 66. :'-(
As a Brit growing up in the 90s, this is one of the songs that made me obsessed with America and the general concept of the middle American idyll and the American dream.
accomify Awesome 😎
It makes me reminisce about the malls here in The Valley back when I was a kid in the 90s.
I'll bet it was great back then, whats it like today?
That's strange because when you watch carefully, the video is critical towards the bully-like approach in the relationships. The song is great but it does not really praise America.
It reminds me of skateboarding and punk rock, growing up in the 90's. Obviously, this music is not punk, but the guy skating on the ramp looks exactly like my friend's older brother back then. Except he had a green mohawk and listened to The Cramps.
