MISMATCHED AirPods? How To Connect and Use Together

- Have you lost an AirPod, either 1st or 2nd generation? You have another AirPod to use, but it's not the same generation, I'll show you how to connect mismatched AirPods easily so you can listen to music or watch videos in stereo. You won't be stuck listening only with one ear and you won't have to spend extra money to get that other AirPod replaced.
Even if you have a different same generation AirPod, the are easily connected. Just reset the AirPod case by holding the back button for at least 15 seconds until the white light flashes an Amber Orange color. Then you can start pairing your different, same generation AirPods together.
This technique of using Mismatched AirPods together eliminates unnecessary waste and can save you a LOT of money.

They stay in my ears when running and become unnoticeable. They are tight but comfortable. The sound quality is about the same as the 1st gen buds. They pair more easily with my LG G8 ThinQ and immediately reconnect when removed from the case. The sound balance is excellent, good but not overpowering base and clean mid tones and highs.Cons: The noise cancellation is good but perhaps a little less effective than the Bose ANC on the 1st gen buds. Passthrough mode as not as good as the 1st gen buds making it a little more difficult to hear conversations when in passthrough.
THIS WORKED!!! Just be sure to set the volume at the same level. I heard it higher in one ear, then changed them to be equal and all was right in the universe! Thank you!!

A tip if it echos!! it’s because the different generations aren’t the same quality. Turn the older air pod all the way up and the newer down until it matches! Sometimes older AirPods don’t work as good as newer ones so the new one is louder even if they are on the same level.

It echos because it’s not playing in stereo... it is playing two completely different instances of the same audio.

Hi - thank you for this. Lost 1 of my 2nd gen buds at golf course - luckily I has lost the opposite ear from 1st gen a while back. But when I booked it up I only got error message. Searched on what to do and came across your video and BAM - it worked. I actually think the stereo sounds amazing and better than before. Thank you. Spending another$200 on buds was not what I wanted to do. Just hoping I can keep both of these in my ears. 👏

It didn't work. I am not able to keep both check marks on each air pod selection if I pick the 1st it will play and when I pick the 2nd gen then it stops playing on the 1st gen and will play on the 2nd gen. Both check marks are unable to stay on each GEN air pod at the same time. :(

Great tip! I had found a R airpod pro, then bought a knockoff charging case. Months later bought a L airpod pro from eBay -- I could connect one or the other, but not both at the same time UNTIL NOW. It's just mono, but I can live with that for my occasional walks etc. Microphone and Siri work fine.
Works but there is no stereo, they both play mono and one is slightly delayed. It sounds awful for music but watching videos is fine
cannot wait to try this later as I have been holding 1st gen left and 2nd gen right and need to make this hopefully work
Hello, I came here with the problem of having 2 SAME generation airpods that I wanted to link together. It’s a long complicated story, but basically all you need to know is that I have 2 different sides from different pairs, both generation 1. I had a RIGHT side from pair A, and a left side from pair B, and I thought I’d save some money if I just figured out how to make these two work. I can confirm that his method works, but it doesn’t take a music major to hear even the slightest difference in sound. In laymen’s terms, The experience is just not the same. the sound is slightly off by the millisecond in each side so you will hear echoing. Also, spacial sound no longer applies so you won’t hear thing’s like what’s behind you or on a specific side like you’re supposed to with AirPods. Nonetheless, if u don’t care about that and u just want to hear sounds from both, then this is a good temporary fix.
Quick question. I don't have the case for the second generation but I have the 1st generation case. Am I still able to do this somehow? Also, I'm on an android, will that limit my ability to do this?

How do I do the second part of the process (where you go to your music and select both AirPods) if I have an Android? The video is very helpful!
You can pair both together from Bluetooth settings, what's more is you can actually adjust the volume on whichever airpod you want till they sound the same loud

I accomplished that on my own but how do i get orange light to stop flashing?
I bought brand new fake airpods and each airpod came up as a different name in my bluetooth settings. The right airpod had adopted the name for something else i'd already had loaded on. Long story short they wouldnt play together at the same time. Was just about to give up when i saw him pair the airpods to his music seperatly (end of video) now i can listen to them both at the same time and ive never been happier!!!!
*fixed mine by*
1. cleaning the case and the metal
2. throwing my pods many times but not too hard. also the case i dropped it many times.
3. i placed my pods back by pressing it down in the case for minutes. (hard pressed)
4. i charged it with original charger for 2 hours. and then it worked! hope that helps
Mine won’t work when trying to pair the second airpod . The screen doesn’t pop up when I hold the button in the back
To anyone out there, with the same model (Gen2), but with a different device or completely new left/right airpod. This actually helped, but not the way I thought it would.
Initially I followed this guide, because I couldn't get my two (Gen2) airpods to connect. They are not from the same case, but none of this worked before everything was at 100% charge. Once everything was green, I was able to pair them inside the box again and the came up just normally after spending hours of trying to pair them.
Let them be in the case, try to follow this guide. In the end, try to pair them normally again once everything is green and the case is signaling "green". Don't bother before that.
So i can pair airpods (gen 2) from different cases in the same one? Like buy someone else’s individual airpod and pair them with my case

Everything worked perfectly fine except for when I came to the option of playing both at the same time I hit the air play logo and it only switches between one or two it doesn't do both at the same
Me too. This worked for months until recently. Now, the option to play both of them has disappeared. I can only choose one of them. Software update maybe? Also, as an fyi: the option to play more than one device exists with other devices- just not these two separate AirPods. So weird.
Mine won’t stay connected. Each time I put them both away to charge it goes back to “mismatched” notification

Yo I tried this and the mismatch thing wouldn’t pop up so I connected one of my AirPods to my phone the put them both in the same case and put it into pairing mode and they paired at the same time. I didn’t all the other steps

Works but 1 airpod is lagging slightly behind the other … the audio is not coming out both AirPods at the exact same time like a properly matched set of headphones/airpods

cannot get it going does not recognize the 1Generation airpod. Tried several times. The difference I have is that it still recogonizes to airpods although one is lost. Thats Why I bought a single one (unfortunately without knowing about the generation problem). Yeah my fault. Any chance trick help?
