The mechanicum had been tempting me into getting into the Horus heresy BEFORE games workshop even indicated plastic Horus heresy being a possibility man.
30K Mechanicum is incredibly cool and shows just how much tech was lost because of the Heresy. I often lamet the fact that Thallaxi and Usurax units are not part of the Adeptus Mechanicus arsenal in 40K! I also love Vulturax Stratus drones but at the FW price I couldn't have the squadrons of them that the army builder/conversion addict in me would want 😅. The creations from The Makers Cult and their 'Dark Techno' line have really caught my attention as an alternative
The Thallaxi and Ursurax were in the process of getting added to 40k and their book was almost finished, but GW brought Gathering Storm in and destroyed the book’s production before it could be released. I’m still salty about it.
There's an army idea I have that is ridiculously expensive, not because its forge world but because its a full conversion/fusion of two different armies. Basically its an idea to take the Ossiarch Bonereapers from AoS and convert them into an Eldar or maybe Drukhari army for 40k. Takes the wording of "Wraithbone" a bit more literal.
Maybe you could get a regular Eldar/Drukhari army, and get a few Ossiarch Bonereaper units to help decorate/convert your 40k army. That way, you don't have to buy two complete armies.
I am also in the same boat. I have wanted this same army sense first edition Horus Heresy. The only thing stoping me was that it is resin and expensive. So I feel your pain. We can only hope that next year we see GW start do more plastics for the other FW armies.
I've been watching The 30k Channel. They do Horus Heresy bat reps filmed about 5 years ago. Those guys and their armies are just beyond incredible. All the models are pre plastic and 99% Forge World models. Just beautiful models.
I dont even have kid therefore I have some disposable income each month for some models here and there but I wouldn't feel right telling my wife I just spent $2-300 on 6 models. It's insane bc how shoddy some of their quality is too.
Same situation, Mechanicum is the only Heresy army I care about. Once they release Thallax and Secutors in plastic I'm getting them. Still waiting on a book going over the Reclamation of Mars. Also I'd love a novel about the time the Eldar saved Stygies VIII from their own titian legions during the heresy, thus creating the Xenarites.
Resin is such an incredible pain to work with, often comes with such massive quality issues AND IS STILL MORE EXPENSIVE that I take normal plastic over resin within the fraction of a nanosecond.
Like, seriously. I've got 12 years of building experience yet when it comes to resin, just fixing and cleaning up all issues takes me as much time as building the entire plastic equivalent.
I really want them to branch out into more automata like the castelans in 40k, and the Domitar, Thanatar and other models of battle/siege automata would be brilliant for that (seriously, I would be happy with just a plastic version of the Domitar and some 40k rules for it, because who wouldn't love a robot the size of a semi truck firing missiles and gravitational anomalies at you as it charges towards you, only to get into close combat and hit you with a concussion blast to the face?)
I suspect we’ll start seeing plastic Mechanicum in a year to two years. And I dearly hope they bring back the Macrocarid Explorator when they do get around to it.
i feel like most mechanicum units DO translate over, they could very easily be ported to an admech (or if it eventually comes out dark mech) army as is most of the robots could fit in to either ad (or dark) mech armies with no issue at all, i feel the troops wouldnt fit, but all the automata would easily
They were supposed to get 40k rules at one point but the book just never came out. And then the edition changed and any hope that book'd appear vanished.
Who knows? Maybe if GW decide to give the Dark Mechanicum their own army, we might get a lot of the Horus Heresy Mechanicum models in plastic. They could double up on games, making the kits go further. If not, there's at least 3D printing. There has to be someone online that's made these weirdo robots.
I agree with you. My first army is Iron hands. I mathed out how much the Mechanicus army was and straight noped into Space marine box sets. Ordo Reductor army would look sweet with an Achilles Land raider tank and their other tanks.
I have a small Mechanicum force I started buying before the 40K Mechanicus came out. I’ve hardly added to it once the 40K plastics became available. Especially with the difficulty I had with bending to just the right shape of the ammo feed of the bolt canon of the castellax automata! If they went plastic I’d expand it for sure. Plastic Thallax should definitely have an optional head with a shattered visor showing the wired in skull inside shown in one illustration.
Not 30k related but the reason I don’t have a Custodes Army is because it’s so Forge World based. Like somehow the reasonably priced army is now one of the pricier ones because of the need for the Dreds, fly boys and specifically for my build the Saggitari

You just explained my problem with the death korps of Krieg forge world models. Ever since the plastic infantry /kill team kit I’ve been wondering, because if they ever released all of the kits from forge world in plastic for the DKoK then there isn’t a kit I wouldn’t buy, and many of the kits I would buy a lot of. But guard is already expensive and like you said, I’m not willing to pay an arm, a leg, an eye, a couple of vital organs, and sell my soul to the chaos gods to afford a resin Krieg army. So my fingers are crossed for plastic and if that ever happens I’ll be happy to just sell the arm and leg 😁

Are you attending the December Great Hall Gathering Kirioth? I could bring a Mechanicum army along and I'd be happy to chat around the army with you or even play.

If you think the prices are too high in the UK, think about what it cost for those of us across the pond in the US, the last FW model I bout was Jenetia Krole and she cost $56US (before the last price hike) plus shipping and tax, so close to $75US for a single character!! That's why I have to keep my self from getting any of the Necromunda characters because it's just cost too much for resin models when other places sell single resin models for 15 to 20US
Im in the process of painting and building my mechanicum army atm. It's a slow process but I'm halfway to my 2500 pt list as I managed to get an unbuilt FW knight for cheap... which may or may not be what sent me down the mechanicum rabbit hole 😂
I would more likely do a small allied detachment of Mechanicum to accompany my marines. If they did plastic Thallax that had all of the weapon options in one kit then I could easily do the minimum 1 HQ 1 Troop choice and then look at getting some of the more exotic units.
Lack of plastic Mechanicum is all that is stopping me from diving in. I love the robots so much. So much space for customisation too. Everything's bespoke an weird anyway.
Love the look of the Solar Auxilia and the tanks that go alongside the range, would get very expensive very quickly. The generic daemons of the ruinstorm are a nice range too that would work alongside the 40k range, but that's not going to happen

Yeah, Castellax, Domitar and the Thanatar were the main draw for me. Ended up getting the Iron Circle for Pert a few years ago but stopped there, the price is too ridiculous for something that small especially when you’d want more than one. Thankfully there is now 3D printing.

I actually pulled the trigger a couple of years ago and added a bunch of Mechanicum units to my pile of shame. When the the Liber Mechanicum came out I was really hoping to be able to bulk up what I had with some plastic Skitarii but for some reason they're not in the list (sure you can take Secutarii and bodge those together from the plastic kit but it's not the same). I still don't get why GW did that.
I’ve always wanted to make a noise marine army but the closest thing, the kakophoni on forgeworld would be way too pricy to make a full army of. Not to mention to kitbashing required to make proper Slaanesh war engines.
I bought (aka I reserved in my FLGS) recently a Chainbraker Lance box and Elimination Maniple one. When I finally assemble my AdMech minis I'll have probably 2/3 - 3/4 of a planned collection. So obviously I'll buy plastic Mechanicum. As for now - FW prices are out of my reach sadly, but they have an even better vibe than AdMech, they feel more cyberpunk, more Matrix-esque. Dark and machine-y and robotic.
For me, I’m not actually all that upset about Forgeworld prices since I did the math and worked out that creating a basic kitbash of Solar Auxilia lasrifle sections (torsos from scions, legs from guard) costs literally double the Forgeworld models I love. Hell, even buying scions to use as Auxilia is more expensive at $200 for 20 vs $180 for 20. It doesn’t mean that I’m buying them (… today. I’m totally going to lose control and buy them at some point), but it does create some perspective for me and my kitbashing habits. To be fair though, I’m in Australia, so literally everything except the Wraithknight is more expensive here…
Engineseers, myrmidons, termite drill tank, karacon tank, thallax. I'd definitely get them. I don't know if I want them in plastic or not but the charm of resin is definitely waning
If this army went plastic, I think I'd sell my siblings for an army....those tanks are awesome, that ship like floating thing is cool...I just want it.
I have the same feelings towards the solar auxilia. Right now, I'm getting a box when I have a good day or something. 135 US dollars for a 20 man rifle squad, or a 115 dollars for a mars alpha leman russ is pretty expensive. Heck, based on what I heard, the rules for both mechanicum and the auxilia aren't that good. Their models are full of personality though. How could you not want any of that if the price wasn't such a problem?
I want plastic Mechanicum. The FW robots are really good looking. Plus so far the plastic HH prices have been very fair. Spartan, Sicarian, Leviathan. Great models, good price.
I have no interest in personally starting an army of admech, dark or otherwise. But I really want to be able to play against them, and can 100% see myself talking friends into starting an army if it's out of forge world resin.
After buying the recent box set I am now awaiting my copy of the Mechanicum army lists 😮😢 I refuse to buy FW Resin and plan to cobble together a force from plastic and conversions of various other GW/Non-GW models. (I lied, I have 3x Mechanicum box sets😮)
I'm already pretty deep into my Horus Heresy Alpha Legion army as well as my Custodes. But I totally agree that the asthetic of the Mechanicum is great. It would probably result in me owning them at some point if they started to go plastic.

If this army went plastic, I think I'd sell my siblings for an army....those tanks are awesome, that ship like floating thing is cool...I just want it.
I would go with knight acastus and knight lancer for mine although it would be really fun to see titans in plastic
I have the same feelings towards the solar auxilia. Right now, I'm getting a box when I have a good day or something. 135 US dollars for a 20 man rifle squad, or a 115 dollars for a mars alpha leman russ is pretty expensive. Heck, based on what I heard, the rules for both mechanicum and the auxilia aren't that good. Their models are full of personality though. How could you not want any of that if the price wasn't such a problem?
I wish the forgeworld knights got plastic kits... just so gw would actually give them usable rules...

Plus so far the plastic HH prices have been very fair. Spartan, Sicarian, Leviathan. Great models, good price.
I have no interest in personally starting an army of admech, dark or otherwise. But I really want to be able to play against them, and can 100% see myself talking friends into starting an army if it's out of forge world resin.

After buying the recent box set I am now awaiting my copy of the Mechanicum army lists 😮😢 I refuse to buy FW Resin and plan to cobble together a force from plastic and conversions of various other GW/Non-GW models. (I lied, I have 3x Mechanicum box sets😮)
I'm already pretty deep into my Horus Heresy Alpha Legion army as well as my Custodes. But I totally agree that the asthetic of the Mechanicum is great. It would probably result in me owning them at some point if they started to go plastic.
