  • In this video I explain how to tune mesh drum heads on electronic drums. In general you run them the same as acoustic Mylar heads. But make sure the head isn't too loose, that makes triggering less accurate.

    On headphones, avoid semi-open or open back headphones, as you can hear external sounds and what you're hearing bleeds off depending on how loud it is.

      I did that once. I returned them right away because it incredibly annoying.

    Appreciate the editing and the bloopers lmao, pretty funny stuff. Honestly, I'm so blown away by this channel. You play superbly, you have a video on any topic I can think of and on topics i didn't know I even needed to know about. Super dedicated regular uploads and high quality content with humour and nice editing/production. Like...what the hell? If this channel was about something even only slightly more popular than edrums/drumming (since that's a pretty big niche) you'd probably have at least 10 times the amount of subscribers.

    Great video Thanks! - I'm new to mesh drum heads - I am concerned about damaging the sensors underneath the head and also am wondering how durable the heads are - I have a Roland head for a PD-80R drum (not quite sure how you call it) - Thanks - Keep up the great videos!

    Hi Justin, thanks for your videos.
    I'm having an issue with a PD-85 snare pad where if I tune it higher (tighter) I start to loose the rimshot function at some point so I have to keep it pretty loose.
    I do like that but a ltiny ittle bit tighter would be nice so do you happen to have any idea why that would be or could you describe how the rim trigger works in detail?
    cheers

    Just got an Alesis Strike kit last month after playing it at Guitar Center. I'm new to drums, but the one at the store definitely had the bounce that the acoustic set did and mine does not. I have adjusted the tensions some, but still doesn't feel the same.
    Do you think it is worth getting a drum tuner or should I just keep at it until I find what I feels right?
    Thanks.

    I bought alexis strike pro 1 week ago. Having issues with snare trigger. Through headphones when playing I really cant hear it. But sat not playing its like an interference and the module flickers as though it's being struck. Head is quite tight. Any suggestions on what is causing this? Thanks in advance

    i just bought alesis crimson mesh set. just set them up and plugged in wires. also got extra tom and crash. i have not yet played or ,learned module. the set comes with black heads. i will hit them lightly. i wonder if the center of the head will wear a hole through ? would i get replacement heads from alesis, or does any mesh head work ? thanx dec.21,17 😎

    I suggest using a ruler to first set your head. Measure the distance between the hoop and lug. Make them all the same. Mine were about 27 millimeters. This centers the head. After that tighten evenly to preferred tension and or pitch.

    Hi Justin, One thing I noticed with some e-drummers they tighten their cymbal pads to tight and they don't swing properly and can damage the pad if hit too hard..... would be a good topic to talk about!

    Interesting, I can’t find an answer to my very specific question, and you almost answered it here. I have a Roland e-kit and am trying to get better at double stroke combos (rolls, paradiddles, 5 stroke rolls, etc). Should I just tighten the heck out of my mesh heads? Is it a “tighter the better” formula? Tight=bounce? Tighten as much as I can, and maybe back off when I get better? HELP!

    slight tension differences in head tension are more for realistic feel, mimicking an acoustic kit. not for the audio tone.

    Was so disappointed the secret drum tuning method wasn't real! 8^) Great video as usual - I was wondering about optimum turning for mesh heads. Medium tension seems like a good starting point. I ended up lowering the tension on my kick drum a bit (3 ply mesh head from UFO Drums) - just slightly less than medium tension.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  4 роки тому

      Haha! Sorry about that, people kept asking me for the secret method of tuning that doesn't really exist, so wanted to clear that up with a video. For the best triggering accuracy I'd get them decently tight.

      65 Drums How about some real numbers and practically exact/consistent tuning from something like a drum dial or tension watch? I suppose I can figure this out myself. I’m thinking somewhere between 370 and 380 on my dial.

    • @emmalfal

      If you happen to have an Alesis, you can take that rubber ring right off. Just pulls free and lowers the rim by a lot. The ring can go back on easily enough if you find that you want it back on there. I did that with my Nitro Mesh snare. The rim of that thing felt a mile high at time.

    May i ask what is the average life span of 1ply vs 2ply vs 3ply for a heavy handed user using the drums probably 2 to 3 times a week? Especially the snare drum. Thank you. :)

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 років тому +1

      I can't really say because every brand uses a different material for their mesh drumheads. Some drummers go years and years and years without breaking a head. I go through one about every year or two.

    How do you tune e-drum pads in relation to each other. I mean I have Roland TD-17. I am tuning toms by ear but I have no idea how the tuning numbers on the module exactly. How many numbers refer to one octave or one full step or half step, etc?
    I have been searching the web the last ten minutes about this.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  9 місяців тому +1

      That’s a good question, but I don’t know the answer. However, you could just download a tuner app on your phone and check :)

    Nice, I'd often wondered about this...I'd planned on making a diy mesh head shell set, but I've changed my mind...It would be kinda expensive & I could spend that $$$ on something I need instead of want...Plus, I'm running out of room here & the bigger shells would take quite a bit more space, that I don't have...Eventually I'll have a bigger pad & can do this, but until then I'm just gonna stick with my pads...

    Alright Justin. It's time to answer the big question. War of sounds. Alesis Strike VS Kat KT4. Just going off the quality of the sounds. Wish you could get the strike. Would make a great Vs video. Imagine intermediate Vs only based on sounds. TD25, KT4 and Strike modules.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 років тому

      The KT4 sounds good, but has bad dynamic range. havn't played the Stike so I can't say anything about the dynamics, but it sound above average. The TD25 is very well round, great sound with better dynamics.

    I wondered if you agree with this?.

    • @65Drums
      @65Drums  6 років тому +1

      I really don't thing there is a specific amount of indentation I recomend, set it to whatever tension you like (at least medium or higher) play it to make sure there's no false triggering, and go from there :)
