Going up to WA later this year and I was planning on dropping a line in while up there. I guess Im not surprised by how complicated they made it...I wish just a sliver of the midwest could rub off on the west coast...You can loot in WA, but can't hardly fish.

I've lived in Washington state my whole life and just really got into fishing a couple years ago. I'd agree that the rules are pretty strict especially towards salmon and steelhead so i just fish for bass 90% of the time because the rules for lakes and ponds are a bit more relaxed. Its always very confusing for me when I'm looking up rivers to fish. There's rules some rivers have also, such as only barbless hooks or like artificial baits only. At this point if i am targeting trout, steelhead, and or salmon i always just use a barbless hook. If yalls are planning to come to Washington to fish for salmon or steelhead, make sure the river is open and be aware of the rules of the rivers and be prepared to meet a game warden. They're always around. PS. I've had my share of paying off a fishing ticket lol.
So my question is, is there anything against encroaching on people already fishing a spot. Ex. My wife and I were fishing a spot, 2 people showed up. When my line broke off on a fish, I went to my tackle box and the 2 people that showed up rushed in and cast their lines in the spot I was just in, the spot I had been fishing... is there anything in the regulations about something like that?
I was happy to temporarily move to Washington as I love finding. But it seems that fishing laws here are made to ensure fishing businesses are successful. I need to go back to a free state 🙏.

On opening day for salmon a few years ago, the cop that rolled up asked for one thing. "Let me see your pen".. apparently it speaks to your intention to fail to record the catch.. I had 2
Hey I have a question about the violating a fishing rule becoming a crime if you've caught a fish. What if you violate a rule and you have a fish, but it was given to you from another fisherman and you did not catch it? Specifically a salmon. Does that still make it a crime?
Hello Rory. We would argue that if you did not catch the fish, and we can prove that, then you have not committed a crime such as Recreational Fishing 1st Degree. There are some other crazy crimes out there involving bartering for wildlife or taking wildlife as payment, so we would want to be careful before asserting that defense. Hope that helps!

I had no idea though and just thought he was being nice. I'm not sure if that is a crime for me though cuz I also heard it's a crime to give/receive a salmon from someone without writing a note stating both people info and where it was caught and all that info.
Can I fish with my husband in washington state if I have my license and my husband doesnt? He does not want to fish but wants to tag along.. Is there any way a cop can give him a ticket?
That is a good question. A cop can always ticket someone if they think they are "taking part in the fishing." So, be careful. The best advice, to never need our services, is to get your husband a license as well. That way he can at least touch the poles without being worried about being cited for a crime. We are unaware of any citizenship requirement to get a fishing license in Washington State.
