As a big fan of the The Wheel of Time books, I can sympathize with your position. I sincerely hope they don't ruin any more great fantasy series, but that is probably wishful, and naive, thinking at this point.
@@mattg5791 I wouldn't say that. The push for all those fantasy shows was surely spurred by the success of Game of Thrones, but given how expensive they are to make and how marginal if even existant their success is, that push is surely coming to an end soon.
I’m already saltier than the Dead Sea that dogshit girlboss writing massacred The Wheel of Time. Mistborn getting desecrated would only drive sodium levels to lethal.
They haven't released a movie I'd want to take anyone to see. They made Napoleon, I got my dad and my grandpa to go see it with me. As we were walking out I pretty much apologized, I didnt know it was gonna be like that. I saw Sound of Freedom with a coworker... Other than that I feel burned.
About Furiosa’s amputation: there’s a famous case of a trapped hiker who had to cut off his own hand to free himself from a boulder. I think the secret to survival is to apply the tourniquet first, before cutting.
Nothing new, mate. Every time a bloke wakes up with a Coyote Woman lying on his arm, the poor sod's got to gnaw it off wif his own teeth to keep from waking the creature up.
It was his leg. It's been in a book "Stronger than a rock" (translated from French sorry if it's not exactly that) and has been adapted into a movie called 127hours by Boyle.
The dealing with her arm could have been solved so much better: her arm gets caught between the two huge cars/rigs and gets crushed. You can obviously see that it's broken in multiple places, but there isn't that much blood. She escapes and puts a bandage on it, or for more dramatic effect she could put a tourniquet above the wound. When she finally makes it to the camp and they have a look at the arm, it's broken so badly and/or has started to die due to the tourniquet, that they can't save it and it has to be amputated. Cut to a scene where she's showing severe mental trauma, but then focuses on revenge and realises she needs a prosthetic, so she starts developing one and after a few attempts ends up with the iconic one. This sequence would establish multiple things: 1. It shows how tough and resilient she is when suffering such an injuring and still escaping. 2. It shows that she has a vulnerable side with the trauma of losing her arm. 3. It shows she can bounce back from that trauma. 4. The multiple attempts ending in the iconic prosthetic shows she really IS a competent engineer.
Half of what made The Crow great was the soundtrack. The Cure Pantera STP Helmut Rollins Band The Jesus and Mary Chain. The soundtrack was incredible and I still listen to it regularly. There isn't one band out their now with even a drop of talent good enough to match that.
Air Force One from '97 is a great movie. Prime Ford, prime Oldman, tense as hell. Unforgettable cinema experience. Wolfgang Petersen was one of the last modern great directors.
'97 - The year "Event Horizon" was shown. Also the year the paper "Long Short-Term Memory" (Hochreiter, Schmidhuber) appeared, apparently the most cited paper in Neural Computation (so-called AI)
2:09:16 Quite honestly, Les Grossman might be my favorite Tom Cruise character ever. Nathan Algren and Vincent are close seconds, but not only was his portrayal brilliant, you could tell he was having SUCH a good time.
I don't know why are people surprised about Furiosa "flopping" because it's not like Fury road made Avatar like money that movie also wasn't a great money making hit it's a good action movie if that's worth something the ending is anticlimactic but that was expected because they need to tie it with the first one
Thank you I've always found the boys to be extremely cringy since episode one. I felt like every script writing process started with, "You know what would be fucked up?"
It seems to me that there is a logic which explains the failure of all these woke and overly feminist and inclusive films. Mad Max, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, Superheroes, Ring Of Power, etc... are all films made primarily for men. As simple as that. Men geeks in particular. Of course women can find satisfaction there. But the target audience will always be young men. So... if you do everything in your power to displease and exclude your target audience, why then be surprised at the lack of success? Helloooo...? Who, in his or her right mind, can expect lines and lines of women waiting outside movie theaters to see a Mad Max movie starring a woman? Obviously not. But did you really have to waste all that time and money to figure it out? The same goes for the wasted Acolyte. Star Wars is primarily for men. All the better if women love it. So much the better if we include more and more female roles. Of course. But Star Wars is for men first. There will never be a crowd of women fighting for a seat to see a Star Wars movie. So, if you are stubborn about wanting to make a Star Wars story with only girl bosses and where the men are mere foils.... well, there you have it. See for yourself. The problem is that the damage is done. People no longer trust woke Hollywood. A movie like ''Fall Guy'' won't attract anyone. Women won't go see an action movie and men will say that it's probably still woke stupidity. Too bad. But remember, Hollywood & Disney: You wanted this.
1:15, I have an old Star Wars mug at work. It causes about 1 uncomfortable conversation a week. When people say “so you’re a Star Wars fan?” I usually says “well, the old stuff”. Then quickly change the subject 😂 luckily it’s a pre-Disney mug and it has every lightsaber on it pre-Disney. Kit Fisto and Asajj Vebtress included. Disney haven’t fucked them up yet to my knowledge. I shouldn’t give them ideas. Who knows, maybe they already have! I haven’t watched disney Star Wars in years now.
Every single poster or promotional piece on this movie features the lead character making the same AOC crazy eye face and staring off into the distance.
Part of the reason we go to the cinema less is the cost. I end up paying for five people which ends up to be $50 for tickets and $30 for popcorn and drinks. So it competes with streaming in a few weeks for free/$15 per month vs $80 for seeing in the theatre as well as other activities. This means that if there is any reason to not go we don’t go.
When factoring in inflation, it's still not in the same league as gone with the wind... But yeah, Hollywood is wondering why they can't make money after backing the money printer devaluing the currency.
I dont think bombadil is necessarily a waste of time in the books. He illustrates that there are powerful forces in the world that could defeat the evils in the world but dont because they are simply not concerned about it whether for the right reasons or not. They can just live in their own little space protected by their power and ability and not watch as the world burns until it burns them and theirs. At the end of the return of the king gandalf refers to bombadil as a rock that has sat and gathered moss, while gandalf was himself a rolling stone. (I just listened to the books on tape, i think the hobbit and the fellowship were the strongest books and by the end of return of the king it started getting a little boring. Tolkein starts padding words more and more starting about halfway through book 2, especially with names. He refered to people by their full family reference like 6 times in one paragraph one time
If Tom Bombadil is a colorful male character in the books, you can bet they are going to make him a twerking queer non-binary to represent the modern audience, like they did with doctor Who!
Coming late to the Critical Drinker party - Your passion for good filmmaking/tv/storytelling comes through. Too bad the Creatives in Hollywood aren’t listening… or maybe they will eventually. My fix for Furiosa - I liked whoever suggested Immorten Joe and Dementus being in an alliance and Furiosa spends most of the movie undermining that. Additionally to tie her to the prized breeders - it would have worked better if she had an older sister who became a breeder and was killed in trying to free herself and the others. We don’t even need to mention Furiosa’s mother then. Then small flashbacks to when she was younger when events trigger them could fix the missing back story… such a shame. Fury Road RULED!!
It’s simple math. If you don’t watch a movie in the cinema it’ll be on streaming within weeks. If it’s worth seeing you can wait a few weeks and it’ll still be available. Plus movie costs, times and incoherence are on the rise but most people have a TV half the size of their sofa just sitting there waiting to be used.
Right at the start I was only listening half to the 1997 facts until "Whales voted to devolve and got their own representation". Wait what? Oh! Wales the country and not whales the species.
The dilemma used to be wasting time and money for a movie that was not as entertaining as you hoped. Now the worry is walking into a 3 hour propaganda piece.
I was on leave from work yesterday so I just laid on the couch and watched some random old films on tv yesterday......not streaming, just regular old tv. I watched Shanghai Knights, Casper and Night at the Museum. All of them had their own flaws but they were all made with such love😅. It was so great to see. No forced agendas, no political pandering.
Reaper's accent is great. Especially when he's insulting Hollywood and their dumbsh*t decisions. And most people aren't watching movies in the theaters because the whole experience gets too damn expensive. Then they just throw it up on a streaming service almost right after it comes out.
Regarding talking to your kids about what happened in movies back in the 2020's. It'll go something like this. -"This you knows, I be first movie reviewer, and times past I've done the tell. This ain’t one body’s story. It’s the story of us all. We got it via youtube, so you got to listen it and ‘member, ’cause what you hears today you got to tell the birthed tomorrow. I'm looking behind us now, across the count of time, down the long haul into history back. I sees the end what were the start. It was the Pox-Eclipse in movies, full of pain! And out of it were birthed empty seats in the movie houses and fearsome time....... and so on.
Back onto the start of the podcast why movies are not doing well. Everything has gone up in price and most people simply can’t afford to go multiple times now as the average salary hasn’t gone up
I think that Dave(Mark Addy's character)put it best in the movie The Full Monty when they're watching Flashdance, "Yeah well she may be nifty on her pins but she can't weld for f!@$ all, there's no way that seam's going to hold." 😂
I just want to throw it out there that I love an hour and 45 minutes away from the nearest movie theatre. There has not been one movie in almost 3 years that I’ve even considered driving that far to see.
2:27:15 I would second that. The Mad Max game was solid. Lot of good environmental design. Each enemy fortress is unique. The atmosphere overall is amazing. 🧡💛🧡
I was ok with Fury road because I figured it would reintroduce us to Max and add a new character for side spin off. But they waited too long, the game should have had more to it, the new movie would have not used Max’s name in the title (should have been ‘a road warrior tale’ or something). People would have the same feelings if there was a second Judge Dread movie off the new movie but following his partner from the first. It’s been too long and bait and switch will be a no go.
i will fully admit i hardly ever go to the movies anymore, for the sole reason that i just can't stand the other people that go. i pay $20 for one ticket and have some stupid millennial playing video games on their phone to my left and a boomer couple carrying on a conversation at full volume to my right. every fucking time. it just isn't worth $20 to sit there fuming when you're supposed to be enjoying a film.
Agreed. Especially now you can watch recent releases on one streaming service or another, and home sound systems and larger 4k tvs are so affordable compared to if you wanted the equivalent setup 25 years ago.
I went to see the original suicide squad. Just for something to do. There were only two other people in the theater. Who talked and we’re otherwise so obnoxious especially after I asked them to be quiet. I walked out. It sucked anyway. The manager gave me a free pass for another movie, nice kid.
A great point is made here but gets skipped over: Top Gun Maverick made a billion and a half dollars. Where were all the copycats? Where was our Mad Max version? Where was the Luke Skywalker version? Where was the Arnold Schwarzenegger Predator version? If Hollywood is still ruled by the bottom dollar, why didn't we see a bunch of like-minded movies catering to our attention? We didn't see it because Hollywood is run by activists. And they're not interested in our money. Not ours.
Where's King Conan? Shouldn't that be at least as lucrative as The Acolyte? I kid, of course. The executive trying to green light a Conan project at Amazon got metooed. His female replacement canned all the toxic masculinity on the production schedule and replaced it with slop for modern audiences.
@@charlescauldron arnold saod the guy who own the rights didnt allow them to make his king conan film or films. He down know what to do with the rights.
I'm not at all worried. They are putting themselves out of business by doing all this 'modern audience' garbage because they live in their little Hollywood/LA woke bubble, same as the game industry. When they have gone we'll get movie makers and game studios who will be in little doubt about what will sell and what won't. In the meantime I'm not going to the movies and I'm playing a backlog of older games sitting at home with a gin and tonic and a comfy chair and ignoring it all. By the way I'm female - and they can shove their 'modern audience' agenda right where the sun doesn't shine,
Furiosa looked total crap. It looked whildly cheap, the make up on the lead looked like she was half CGI or something. The trailer just looked awful. Whether it was okay or not is immaterial, no one is going to a movie when all the promotions look awful
Let’s not forget, back in the day people tended to be cast for roles not necessarily because they fit that role from a book or whatever, but because they provided the name to bring people in to see the movie. Which doesn’t work as well anymore.
17:10 I disagree with Gibson being put into a new Mad Max and that would bring me into the theater. I would love to get another Mad Max with Hardy with the original creator at the helm. I think this is more of a cost problem and streaming eating the body of the snake. 29:50 How would that work? Max met her in Fury Road. I would argue that another character was flashed out in this movie. That's the world these characters inhabit. 37:55 Yep, the arm was total bull. The same logical flaw for me was how she could disappear from the harem. Surely, they would search for her. 50:00 Agreed that the movie would be more interesting to general audiences, if this was a new character in the world and would thus earn more money. 53:20 Agreed, second big mistake in the script. 🧡💛🧡
Back in 2015, I was excited for 'The Force Awakens.' As it happened, I walked out of the theater vowing to never give Disney my money again. The way the treated Luke and Han was unforgivable. I immediately started looking online for others who shared my opinion of Disney "Star Wars." Almost a decade later, Disney sucks worse than ever but I no longer know anyone who still watches their crap.
I first read about Tom Bombadil circa 1976. He is an extremely dynamic, youthful, engaging character in print. My favorite character then and now, but only as written by JRR Tolkien. The movie version appears to be an abomination.
Furiosa losing her arm: Shoulda been Dementus takes her arm cuz he figures out it's a map to The Green Place. Then The Organic Mech heals her and build her new arm. That would ad some to the Mech character (which is a pretty cool character imo) and also help to villainize Dementusa.
Hollywood needs to keep their costs down to ever get out of this. Every $200m film needs to make almost $1b to be worth it. They need a block buster every single time, no risks are possible.
The value proposition of the cinema has steeply declined relative to modern alternatives. We can now get endless entertainment on demand for free, in the comfort of our homes. Going to the cinema is a stressful time-commitment, putting us at the risk of other strangers, in a dubious locale, for an ever increasing price-tag. It's just not worth it. Same reason blockbuster died. Same reason gamestop's going under. Just like every other obsolete product, it's been replaced by a cheaper and/or more convenient option. Some may find it sad, but in 20 years kids will be incredulous that their parents used to go crowd in a dark dank room with a bunch of strangers, just to watch a movie in "the old days".
In Furiosa, I just would like to know why, when Jack came to town on his rig with a hot full-life besides him and no one else, Immortan Joe with his breeding kink didn't keep her for himself again.
39:00 people miss this but it was mr Harley who help her escape. At the beginning he didnt wanted to shoot her with her mother and when they capture her and jack, he let them have a last kiss. I think they wanted to show they are still good guy
I really think you all should check out what's been going on with the Silent Hill remake, especially because it will be alongside a live action movie covering the same story. Both of which declared they were adapting the story for a "Modern Audience". The original movie led to the destruction of the entire franchise as it radically shifted the Fandom demographics, and gave rise to several studios who inserted themselves into the equation smelling money. They're repeating the death of the franchise all over again but at high speed.
Red Letter Media's Mike made some research for their latest video where it proved that from around 1940 (I think) up to 2000 stand-alone movies counted for more than 75% of the box office earnings.. in the 00s up until present day the numbers are around 75% of all profits are made from sequels & franchises. Minding the total earnings has dropped drastically it paints a grim picture of Hollywood today. They rely on sequels & franchises because the stats says they're the lowest risk - but still most of them flops...it's the snake biting it's own tail.
it's not a bad movie, but it's a weird movie. It feels like a low-budget movie because they talk about all the big events instead of showing them, but then they clearly spent too much money on special effects which is why it's a financial flop. Fury Road i love because it's just a simple action movie. It's a fantastic chase sequence built around a simple but easily understood plot. It's not the smartest movie, but there's nothing about it that makes you go 'wait, what?' while you enjoy the spectacle of it Furiosa is just, like, the opposite of that. The plot is way too bloated and it just becomes a distraction from what should be a fairly braindead action movie. That's always been the appeal of Mad Max, to see how batshit insane it gets... except for Furiosa, which sidelines the action for world building.... i just don't understand the thought process that went in to that movie.
Despite having only 4-5 lines I really wanted to know more about the Warrior Woman from Road Warrior. I would’ve watched that. So I don’t really have a problem with a movie based around Furiosa.
Yeah sure. Mauler checked the "Doorbell". When i have to shit i call it shitting or take a dump or something else. Checking the doorbell is something new for me.🤣💩🤣
I think releasing movies so early in streaming platforms dilutes the urge of excitement and desire to watch it in the big screen. Furiosa was just not that great.

The girlboss era we’re currently stuck in is why I don’t want them to make a Mistborn adaptation anytime soon.
Never in a million years would it be good.
Can you just imagine? They'd make Vin so insufferable. And Kelsier would be some charisma-vacuum loser. No thank you!
Despite what drinker and fringy say. I really enjoyed kingdom of the planet of the apes.
This. I'm tired of going out of the theater having spent multiple dozens of euros and nobody being quite happy to have been there.
@@romainrondeau4242 It was his arm. I saw a picture of him.
@@trashfire9641 oh shit yeah i think i mixed it up with Happy Tree Friends here lmao. Thanks for correcting me :).
This sequence would establish multiple things:
Yes... you are SO much better at storytelling than George Miller.

Air Force One from '97 is a great movie. Prime Ford, prime Oldman, tense as hell. Unforgettable cinema experience. Wolfgang Petersen was one of the last modern great directors.
There hasn't been a great director since '97? What?
Yeah I really like it, need to rewatch it
'97 - The year "Event Horizon" was shown. Also the year the paper "Long Short-Term Memory" (Hochreiter, Schmidhuber) appeared, apparently the most cited paper in Neural Computation (so-called AI)
Also the year Jim Carrey had his best weekend release with Liar Liar...

Bunch of old ladies in basements bitching about the outside world.... Now that's what i call entertaining. 😆
Too bad. But remember, Hollywood & Disney:
You wanted this.
they're still telling customers to fuck off... return to hiring fans and fuckin professionals
I was told on twitter that Furiosa flopping was "my fault"
That's just her face, her eyes are very wide apart like a hammerhead shark. She has to make her eyes wide open so they don't look so tiny.

FYI
June 8-10 The re-release of LOTR in Imax, I can't wait.
Phew - $1.8 billion in 1997 would be like a movie grossing $3.4 billion in 2024
Indeed. Good thing all our salaries have increased accordingly.
When factoring in inflation, it's still not in the same league as gone with the wind... But yeah, Hollywood is wondering why they can't make money after backing the money printer devaluing the currency.
The Chumbawumba song had the line "Drinking the night away", so I thought it would get a bit more respect.

I enjoyed Furiosa. A shame it's flopping. The general public doesn't really care for the theater experience rn and I dont blame them
My theater-going has increased about 20-fold post Covid. One to three times a week.
Still not sure how I got in to see Titanic as a little 10 year old. Couldn’t stop crying when I left the theater.
Beyond Thunder Dome had a Tina Turner song with it: “we don’t need another HER-ooooh” (so they utilized her well!) 😉
The dilemma used to be wasting time and money for a movie that was not as entertaining as you hoped. Now the worry is walking into a 3 hour propaganda piece.
You'll have to go back to 1924 facts/trivia/movies, when you reach Open Bar #124.
Scousers are awesome, no bullshit.
Reaper really makes me laugh with his observations of the absurdities he's seen on screen. Bring him back early and often, guys.

It should also be noted that movies' cultural influence has declined as games have advanced in their variety, narrative, impact, and revenue.

Back onto the start of the podcast why movies are not doing well. Everything has gone up in price and most people simply can’t afford to go multiple times now as the average salary hasn’t gone up
The fact that salaries are stagnant when companies are laying off record numbers should tell us what the future will be like.

I just want to throw it out there that I love an hour and 45 minutes away from the nearest movie theatre. There has not been one movie in almost 3 years that I’ve even considered driving that far to see.
In LOTR movies Gollum has a line where he says give it to me raw. So, ROP stole that line too.
2:27:15 I would second that. The Mad Max game was solid. Lot of good environmental design. Each enemy fortress is unique. The atmosphere overall is amazing. 🧡💛🧡
And the Magnum Opus is sooo cool!
I think it would be funnier if instead of reviewing the acolyte after it came out, the guys just ignor on the grounds that noone cares. 🤔

Also in 1997: the Pokémon anime first aired.
I know this, because the first episode aired nine days before I was born.
Let’s not forget, back in the day people tended to be cast for roles not necessarily because they fit that role from a book or whatever, but because they provided the name to bring people in to see the movie. Which doesn’t work as well anymore.

Can someone tell me what time they talk about anime?
Mad Max would need to pull out his old interceptors to win the race. it could have worked.
I still go to the theater but only the first showtime on a weekday. Tickets are under $10 and there's rarely more than 5 or 6 other people
Regarding Escape from New York. I remember watching it in the movie theater back in 81. Awesome, I loved it back then and I still do.
That's a lot of number crunching.
@@banhammer3904 he had some kind of limitation. I think it was the top 10% movies or something. It's a good video.. check it out.

I agree that it is a failure of Hollywood more than anything else.
it's not a bad movie, but it's a weird movie. It feels like a low-budget movie because they talk about all the big events instead of showing them, but then they clearly spent too much money on special effects which is why it's a financial flop.
Fury Road i love because it's just a simple action movie. It's a fantastic chase sequence built around a simple but easily understood plot. It's not the smartest movie, but there's nothing about it that makes you go 'wait, what?' while you enjoy the spectacle of it
Furiosa is just, like, the opposite of that. The plot is way too bloated and it just becomes a distraction from what should be a fairly braindead action movie. That's always been the appeal of Mad Max, to see how batshit insane it gets... except for Furiosa, which sidelines the action for world building.... i just don't understand the thought process that went in to that movie.
