Sanderson laid out how this show could have been structured, and how I wish they’d hired him. Each season would be set in a different century, with a different core struggle that brings the elves closer to being vulnerable to manipulation. Normal human characters are all new each season. Dwarves and Numenoreans might last 2 seasons at most, while the elves are constant. Eventually, the elves of Eregion are positioned to fall for Anatar’s lies. Then you get a season depicting the Numenoreans as primary PoV, where they call Sauron an upstart, sail to middle earth in such might that he surrenders, and then he corrupts them from the inside. Final season opens after Numenor’s destruction and Sauron losing his beautiful form and the ability to shapeshift, culminating in the last alliance. It would be an opportunity to show Elendil and Gilgalad battling Sauron in the epic 2v1 (which for continuity with the films would leave him weakened rather than defeated) and add context to how Isildur took the Ring.
The potential for this show was sky high, but they started with bad intentions and have done pretty much everything wrong.

only thing i took away from all three episodes : Amazon knows this show is fucked
Dropping three hours of content all at once is just an attempt to game the 'minutes watched' metric for the premiere, and to mitigate the negative publicity of having to explain why the numbers drop off week after week for 8 weeks straight. This is just Amazon trying to get it all out of the way and sweep the bad news under the rug as quickly as possible, because they know the normies will not stick around until the end of this.
If they had any confidence in this product they'd be drip feeding it out as slowly as possible to milk the monthly sub fees, not rushing it out as fast as humanly possible

2:40:00 approx. Drinker has a good point about there being too much stuff, and no one seems to be backing him up. So consider this: when I was a kid, there were 2 TV channels: ITV and BBC1. The later addition of BBC2 can be ignored for statistical purposes as lots of people couldn't get it. So you had 2 channels competing for, potentially, 50% of the audience each, every single night (no daytime TV). If you're trying to get half the audience, you put in a lot of work to try and claim as much above that 50% as you can. Today, there are more than 100 channels vying for my attention (way more, but let's use 100 as the number for ease of reckoning). That means that each channel is vying for 1% of the audience. And the effort they put out is reflected in this. Most of them specialize: sport, horror, SF, nostalgia, etc. and by doing so guarantee a tiny sliver of the audience. But no one is trying to pull in half the audience because they know they just can't. The problem with having so much "choice" is that the quality goes down to meet expectations, and the TV companies expectations have dropped from 50% to 1%. And the losers are the viewers, because we've lost the power to influence the makers in any significant fashion.

I can honestly say the following, I did not watch The Acolyte because of the comments made by Drinker and guests both before the show came out and when it was airing. However, this isn't because my viewing is strictly controlled by youtube creators, it is a consequence of slowly having the Star Wars brand (and many others) spoiled over many products. I was there and hyped for Force Awakens, Last Jedi was an abomination, Mandalorian S3, Solo, Obi Wan etc etc. There have now been so many Star Wars shows and movies that have truly let the IP and the fanbase down that now, unless I hear that a show is incredible from a variety of online sources then I will just find something else to do with my time. It's not because Drinker told me not to watch it, it is simply the end result of having something I used to adore brought down to such a level that it requires a groundbreaking show or movie to even get the slightest attention from me. That is why creators on youtube are targeted for their opinions. Companies think they are directly influencing viewership without ever acknowledging the slow rot we have endured for years.

Orc women washing clothes in the river and chatting happily, orc men strolling back and forth running errands, little orc kids running around and giggling, playing tag and stick-fighting, etc.
They're trying to turn the orcs into just another type of human being.
I'll never understand these peoples' overwhelming desire to make evil "palatable" or "sympathetic". Probably because so many of them want to identify with it, but don't want the negative aspects of it. So "evil" becomes "just a different point of view, just a shade of gray", so that they can feel better about themselves for identifying with it.

All the problems with the entertainment industry today boil down to one simple thing: corporations are bad stewards of art. In the past companies were just "the money". They supplied the funding and selected a couple of key creatives to do the actual building. It worked well, people made money, but results were volatile. Over time companies were replaced by corporations, and if you know anything about corporations you know that they hate volatility. Not risk, corporations are fine with risk so long as it is quantified and managed, but volatility is the devil. Corporate suits are there to represent investors, and investors like reliable returns with known risk levels.
So what they did is refine the process, identify the key variables and optimize them so that they could construct performance models to control the chaos. And it worked, sort of. But what they didn't realize is that IPs are art, and if you interfere too much with it to construct your investor-friendly entertainment factory you begin to suck the life out of the thing at the heart of your product. The things like DEI that people think are conspiracies are nothing more than typical corporate strategies to do things like maximize the size of the potential customer base. Replacing stars with characters allows them to control actor salaries and to revisit IP numerous times ala Spiderman to continuously generate new revenue streams. Making movies with enormous budgets is literally a version of the same strategy used by financial institutions during the mortgage crisis: go big to win big.
The problem the industry is running into now is that the more you make art by assembly line the less it will appeal to the customer base. This is quite obviously already happening. With execs focused on making the process ever more efficient and predictable, the creatives left to build the product have little control to put their soul into their work so they settle for cheap feel-good wins in the hope of leaving some stamp on it. What's needed are small companies with small projects that can reinvigorate the industry, although some changes are inevitable I think. Theaters are done, zero-ad streaming is coming to an end, and physical media probably won't last much past the end of the decade. The good news is that technology coming into the marketplace now will enable a whole new generation of smaller budget creatives who build with less but hold a bigger stake of the back end.

Orcs 'social organization' was, as I recall, limited to clans - which occasionally warred on each other. But when controlled by a powerful will (Sauron/Saruman.). But Orc Hippies? C'mon...

Good point about movies like The Fugitive, not every film NEEDS to be a big cultural event.

I wouldn't say I'm normie but not super versed in tolkien lore but enjoyed the fellowship trilogy. Can confirm I tapped out with not-gandalf and harfoot scenes in first episode.

I sometimes think modern show runners think classic stories themes are patriarchal incarnate and to use or acknowledge the successes only promote the continuation of said Patriarchy.

1:07:50 Do people sit and watch shows these days or is this just something to have on in the background while they are on their phones or working?

There are 2000+ Hogan's Heroes stories on FFN. There are 246 for Avatar... Yes, that movie will definitely live on in our hearts.
