On August 5, 1970, Angela Davis purchase three guns including a shotgun. On August 7, 1970, seventeen year old Jonathan Jackson brought a satchel containing those three three guns, into the Marin County Hall of Justice, where Judge Haley was presiding over the trial of San Quentin inmate James McClain. Once inside, Jackson drew an automatic gun, and, aided by McClain and Black Panther inmates Ruchell Magee and William A. Christmas, took Judge Haley as well as Deputy District Attorney Gary Thomas and three female jurors hostage. Jackson and the other kidnappers fled with the hostages. Responding police fired on the van that Jackson was driving. During the shootout, Jonathan Jackson, inmate Christmas, inmate McClain, and judge Haley were killed, while inmate Magee and attorney Thomas were seriously injured. Angela Davis has maintained that she had no idea how the guns came to be used in the kidnapping. Angela had also been in communication with Jonathan Jackson's brother a prisoner that Jonathan requested be released during the kidnapping.
Rich Whiteman "professionally oppressed" I'd be willing to bet anything you have no clue what these women have been through in the fight for equality. Read a book would you.. Angela Davis went to prison for her views and you say she's professionally oppressed come on dude instead of being an ignorant asshat why not try to understand why they have spent their entire lives fighting for equality.
I watched Angela Davis speak at UC Berkeley in the early seventies and to this day I have never seen a more powerful and inspirational speaker in my life. I left that auditorium changed for the rest of my life. She didn't not preach her own beliefs but told us to believe and stand up those beliefs with all that we have. Thank you so much for the life you have been living and the guiding light that you have so willingly cast before us. I love you. From a sixty one year old white guy.
To Don Desper’s eloquent comment, I add that I share those feelings about the importance and contributions of Angela Davis. I am also a white man, now 77 years old, who went to UCLA shortly before she became a professor there, and still admire her devotion to this ongoing movement.
(From Wikipedia) --> When 17-year-old Jonathan Peter Jackson attempted to negotiate the freedom of the Soledad Brothers (which included his older brother George) by kidnapping Superior Court judge Harold Haley from the Marin County Civic Center in San Rafael, California. The resulting shootout left four men dead, including both Jackson and Judge Haley. Two others were wounded. The event received intense media coverage, as did the subsequent manhunt and trial of Angela Davis, an ousted assistant professor from UCLA with connections to George and Jonathan Jackson, and the Black Panthers. Davis owned the weapons used in the incident.
Like her or not, at least Angela Davis had conviction and a moral compass. Alicia on the other hand had $$$ and personal gain in her heart, and not an ounce of integrity.
I made a mistake in my earlier comment, being someone that has never made a youtube comment. I meant to say that Angela did not preach her beliefs to us, oh yes she told us how she saw the world and why, but her message was one of hope for us, that we too would develop our own views and ideas and continue to grow, continue to be strong in the face of opposition and live a life that would be meaningful. Angela you are a national treasure.
Very inspiring...nice to see someone who is not afraid of being branded a "leftist" as if that's a sin. I love the quote by Carl Sagan, "just what are conservatives conserving?" I, and many I know, believe we need to conserve the Earth, which makes me conservative. Really, those who call themselves conservatives are hiding behind the word, and acting like selfish children. I've been teaching their children for many years, and think they're just hideous (the parents, not the kids).
When I see Confederate flag or matters of that time period I recall mostly white people fighting white people with the reason of no your not! after that war we became... "We the people then became, One for all, All for one." D.Nicely
I wonder how angela reacted when she found out Alicia turned out to be crook.
Where's that 60 million BLM ???
