My mother is a successful artist. Most of her income is from commissioned work. She does a really good job showcasing her portfolio of past works to clients and talking about how she can create a custom piece that has the same flow or composition of another piece but with their desired colour pallet. Another big thing is people like to show off their new art piece to their friends and family when they have them over. So being able to talk about the intricate details of a piece in a way that the client can then recite back to their friends is important.
Not sure where I was going with this, but yeah…
I think building a portfolio of diverse works and then showing that portfolio to clients and explaining how you can create a custom piece for them, using X piece from the portfolio as reference, is a great way to expand your sale options and provide yourself with another stable source of income.
Yes good point! Being able to talk about the piece you commissioned in detail is very valuable from a client perspective!
You're so GOOD!!!
I really like the painting. The way you paint is so clean. Satisfying to watch. Thank you!
Hot tip: if you're ever commissioned by Les Wexner, he's notoriously cheap on commissions, despite actually having a real Picasso in one of his bathrooms. More than one artist has told me he'll bail halfway through. Double the commission price and take the half (down) payment if you can stomach several changes he will put you through.
Duly noted if he ever comes a knockin'!
@@b.cormier Refer him to the Milan family. Whatever he pays, he's getting screwed.
@@richardnolan3903 who are the Milan family?
Is this the same individual that gave Jeffrey Ep///stein his very expensive NY townhouse?
@@charlied415 They have hundreds of demonstration videos on UA-cam that are really just advertisements for their online courses. For $2,000 you can learn how to paint the same tacky, overpriced works that they produce.
Thank you for making this video! I have been a part-time artist for about three years now and I have sold about 40 original pieces now (many of them commissions), but now that I have a good paying other very part time job to pay the bills, I’m finally asking myself, “What do I want to create? What do I stand for? Who am I as an artist?” Those questions have shook me to the core in some ways for the last couple months as I am preparing to create more of my own pieces that I want to create and to make and sell my own prints. I got so caught up in always creating for other people, that I somewhat lost my own creative voice, and now it is time for me to rediscover my passion for art and to really pursue it as a career. I am only accepting commissions that I am thrilled about creating and are paying well. Thank you for shining light on this topic! I love your work and how you help others!
That’s awesome! Sounds like you’re at an exciting turning point 🙌 wishing you lots of success with your future projects!
Here's a pro you didn't mention: commissions give you a good incentive to try painting something you'd never otherwise think to paint, so I have found them to be great for practice. For example, I did a painting for my friend with a mermaid and a polar bear. From that painting I learned how to do ocean landscapes, fish scales, and polar bears, none of which I'd gotten around to trying before that. Doing that commission made me a better artist for sure.
BEAUTIFUL!🎉❤
YES.
Great video🎉❤😊
Thank you for sharing, your work is amazing and you are funny loved watching enjoyed it !
i love your videos Brooke Cormier
Wow!! 😮
I love your humour, and of course your art.
Omg, you crack me up. LOVE your videos. Your art, your humor, seeing the process, everything. I'm a designer/illustrator/artist mix and your videos are definitely what I need on a regular basis. You Rock.
That palette ! ! ! !
I love seeing this commission finished, but wow what a perspective. Amazing. Thank you for sharing with us!!
Thank you!! ☺
Brooke. If a guy jokingly suggests you should paint a nude painting of them, just say, "Sorry, I don't work in miniatures" Lol
😂😂😂
Awesome video, awesome information, thanks for the... awesome... things uploaded here. Happy holiday's!
Glad you liked it! Thanks for watching and happy holidays 😊
Magnifique ❤
She is baaack!!!!
I have to say I truly appreciate the artists on this platform that help inspire and guide other artist to fallow their passion and believe in themselves. I am one and it is truly inspiring to see where you are in your art career. You are very talented and thank you for sharing your knowledge, time and effort.
Beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊
Thank you! 🤗
The painting is amazing 😍 also I would love to have another separated video with info on how to price commissions, so far it’s the hardest part for me 🥹
Thank you! ☺ and noted!!
Great paintings and good info on commissions!
WOW... This was so relaxing to watch and it is so beautiful. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you for watching 🤗
THe two pieces are lovely.
Thanks a lot!
Beautiful work and thank you for the information
xD i love you hahahah just found you, and I love the way you explain stuff hehe see you soon !
It was lovely watching you paint this commission and it was so funny 😂, too. I found it very interesting to see cause to me these two pieces look quite different from your other work. But they are beyond beautiful 😍 for sure and the details are unreal! I‘m sure the collector is enjoys it daily!
Personally, I hate doing commissions (as you said, sometimes any amount of money offered for them wouldn’t cut it!) and thus have decided early on to only take on those who come from people I already know and value and if the subject matter feels interesting and fun to me. Nothing beats the creative freedom of non-commissioned creations. ❤ Happy painting 😘!
I enjoy your dry sense of humor, typical Canadian. 🙂
These paintings are wonderful! Love the colors. They look like something painted 200 years ago, a classic style. More classic than pickles on an ax, at least.
Haha thanks a lot Racheal! I appreciate it ☺️
Hi. I am 27 years old. And I love painting forever.and this year I decided I want to be an artist.and I throw away all of my educations and jobs and etc. And 8 months ago I started to learn painting. I wish and I hope one day I will paint like you.thanks😊
Great video
Definitely been watching the he seven years 🎉😂 this was awesome video.
Haha thanks a lot Christina! 🤗
in this past hour, you have captured my heart with your videos! Can hardly wait to see more of them! Im going to subscribe now! See ya round!
I discovered your channel this summer and I love it 😍 You inspired me to start painting/drawing. Wish you all the best 😘
I just love this girl . Every time I see you I feel happy and energetic and positive and all the good feelings 😭🌷❤️
Your finished paintings are beautiful Brooke (-: Marion 🎉🎉🎉
Thanks a lot Marion! 🤗
What a gorgeous painting! And YES PLEASE make a video dedicated just to pricing. I find that charging based on time is difficult since I’m not a full time artist and try to sneak in painting on weekends and spare moments during the week if I can.
Thanks for your insight on this topic, Brooke! For me, I have a price range of cost per square inch - based on how much detail or difficultly the idea or reference image involves. I find this gives the client an idea of what they could afford before slamming them with a number right off the bat. Eases the blow, ya know. 😋
Yes that’s a great way to do it! Thanks for sharing! 🤗
just discovered your channel. Happy I did 😀
Your painting is amazing!! 😍😍😍
Thank you so much! 🤗
Brooke I get a giggle from your videos! You are humorous and so darn cute! But I also enjoyed watching you create your beautiful art. I've only started watching this video but had to stop it to send you this comment. Really enjoy your work, both video and canvas.
Thank you so much Sandy! That really means a lot, enjoy the video! 🤗
Thank you for sharing! As a recent full time artist I really always appreciate your content and advice. I usually charge now about $1.30-2.00 per sq inch for my commissions plus materials. But I still feel like another video to break down your pricing process would be amazing.
Wow‼️👏‼️👏‼️👏🖌️💐🖼🎨. Spectacular painting 👏‼️👏‼️👏. Thx for sharing. You’re so very talented. Love the way the wood grain comes through too. I’ve never seen that before.
Thanks a lot Joan! I appreciate it! 🤗
WOW beautiful work🤩💜❤💜
Thank you!!
Love this commission Brooke! I’ve been a fan of yours for nearly 7 years now and you were the artist that inspired me to become a painter myself! Can’t wait to see your creations in 2024!
That is so special, thank you Emily!! Wishing you many happy painting years to come 🤗
I’ve been a fan of hers for seven minutes. Just found her channel. lol. Start painting and achieve your dream
Hi Brooke! I just watched your video interview with Kelsey and discovered who you are! I am really excited to begin following along your art journey
Love the chill vibe of this video :-) I'm scared as hell of commission work, but it's because I'm just an amateur artist.
I really agree with your pros and cons. I'm very pleased that I now have two assignments, and I really need them. But I no longer have time for my own ideas.
Congrats on your commissions! But yes, try to balance it with some fun so you can stay motivated ☺
I love your work, always inspiring. I'm just down the 401 in Belleville.
Thanks Marie, I appreciate it! I'm from Pickering, so not too far!

Dude.. I’m so glad I watched this. Aside from the ascetically pleasing shots, your humor and commentary made this entertaining and very informative. It’s inspired me to get back into my creative mode and work on some new pieces. I enjoy seeing your posts on the regular and I’m glad to see you have a channel. Keep up the great work 😊🤙🏾
Thank you!! I really appreciate it 🤗
I love this commission too:) Great video...subscribed:)
Thanks a lot Monique! 🤗
Brooke! I just love you so much. I stumbled upon your IG a couple years ago. I'm no pro and enjoy looking at other people paint to learn stuff for my painting journey. So THANK YOU. Your paintings are scrumptious and you are fun to watch and listen to. I really admire your hard work. Yay!
Thank you so much! I appreciate you watching and following along 🤗
I’d love to have a video all about pricing in detail. 🥰
Beautiful painting!!! Love your work and humor 😂
Thanks Jennifer! 🤗
Great video thanks , I love the ice cream moment 😂 oh and for the nude request come back you can say” I don’t work on a canvas that small” 🤭
HAHAH best 👏comeback 👏ever 👏
Okay seriously, I love how surprisingly amazing it is to find kindred spirits on here! I found your videos this past year & have loved every single one of them! I love how honest you are in how you approach your work and those who commission you as well! Thank you for taking the time to share as it's helped me on my solo journey as well!!! Much much gratitude for your love and work! I can't wait to see what next year has in store!! Cheers!
Brooke, I loved watching you create this gorgeous work of art, while listening to your thoughts. Best to you in 2024!
Thank you so much Rachelle! I'm glad you enjoyed the video 🤗
You’re so cute and funny. I really enjoy watching your content and I love how much you make me laugh every time. Sometimes I even feel like I’m watching cartoons when you do the funny voices or when you make a funny expression with your face! Also, thank you for sharing your experiences and knowledge! Great video and BEAUTIFUL work with that commission. Wow! 🙌
That means a lot, thank you so much for watching! 🤗
I love these cozy paint-with-me-info-videos - I learn so much more in slower paint videos as opposed to timelapses so double win. Thanks!
Loved the Ice Cream moment!! 😂 Such beautiful paintings!! 💐
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience on being an artist. It's all super helpful for us baby artist beginners trying to learn the ropes! ❤❤❤
I'm happy to hear it's helpful! Thank you for watching! 🤗
Buon lavoro!
I came here for the art but l got to say that you are very funny also
I was not expecting those voices you made
Beatiful work by the way👌
You are incredible talented ! X and so inspired 😊
It's so funny you mentioned the joke nude portrait request! That just happened to me lol smh Thank you!
Haha no way!! I doubt it will be the last time 🙈
long time instagram follower, love your art but honeslty I am just here to admire your beauty
I get the validation sense. I’m a beginner sculptor with polymer clay. Somebody saw one of my pieces and he commissioned me to make him something a month later. I wasn’t even trying to sell any of my art. Didn’t think I was ready for that.
This is such a helpful video and perfect timing! I’ve never done a commission but I know someone who just recently decided he wants a painting. We’ve been discussion what he might want, what I’m best at, size, price, all that and thanks to this video, and my art teacher, I know I’m going about this right. Thankfully I’ve known him forever so there’s no trust issues there, he just has to figure out what he wants which is taking awhile…as in we’ve been slowly discussing this for a month at least 😅 I want to paint him something I know he’ll really like though so it’s ok all in all. You’re hilarious btw!! Definitely earned a new subscriber :)
Thanks a lot Elisabeth and congrats on your first commission! I'm sure it will be a success, and have fun with it 🤗
@@b.cormier thanks! I’m looking forward to it :)
I love your work and you're an inspiration to keep painting! I would love to know more information about pricing and finding my customer audience
Thanks so much! Ok I will keep that in mind ☺️
I love this painting 💕
great video! ♥♥♥♥
Thank you so much! 😊
Thank you for sharing your personality and your work. I suspect that i can learn alot from you. Merci.
You need a role in a comedy. Soo animated and funny to watch!
I started chasing my dream of being an artist in 2021. You were one of the first artists running a successful, professional fine art business that I came across and I started following you and your work across different platforms. Your IG reel efforts make me laugh; and, I am glad you hopped onto UA-cam to share your knowledge and your humor and your light in more depth. This informative vlog here of your early to current experiences with commissions is right in line with what I am experiencing in my first two and a half years as a full-time artist - including the request for nude portraits. 😅 Thank you for this summary and for your recommendations. Best wishes in 2024! 👩🏻🎨🎨❤️
Awe thank you Mei! That means a lot and I'm happy you're finding my work and content valuable 🤗All the best to you in 2024 as well and stay creative!🖌
Exquisite colours and most expressive composition. Fabulous stuff! Cheers!
Thank you very much! 😊
uuuuu beautiful ❤❤❤
Honestly I love your work and your personality there is just something different about your videos and it’s relaxing and funny and really motivating. My question would be how can you make a community of artists that can recommend you or how did you market your work on social media
So helpful, thank you!
Thank you for watching!
fantastic art work
very nice! you are smart beautiful and and a great artist.
It’s amazing how you bring a bunch of paint to life like that! Well done luv!
That was a good one Brooke. I was ironing some clothes whilst watching actually lol. I haven't had the most unique experiences doing commissions ('can you just change this bit please') but I enjoyed hearing and seeing the successfulness in what you presented here (great paintings!). Oh, I'm also here for the funny voices. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
- Leith in Oz
Thanks a lot Leith! Glad I could keep you company during your chores 😋 Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you as well!
Great video. I’m just a dabbler at painting. I have a folksy style, I had a couple of paintings showing at a health centre and lo and behold a complete stranger who I have never met bought a small 12x12 painting, what a thrill! Thank you producing these video. Your amazing.
That's awesome Carol, congrats on the sale!! Thanks for watching and for your support ☺
As usual, this was an amazing video to watch. Beautiful commission! Have a good holiday and see you next year!
Thank you so much! Same to you 🤗
great video and paintings, thanks! :)
Wow what a lovely piece, I love the orange flower so much 🥰!! I also appreciate the tips you shared they were very helpful. Have a great rest of your year 😊
Thank you so much! Same to you ☺
Beautiful work! Love that you mentioned that artists get into the arts so we can avoid numbers - LOL! So true! i just retired from a soul sucking job and now i am working on my art , which has been a side hustle forever, or feels like it. I think for me the biggest struggle of pricing my art, especially commissions, is the imposter syndrome creeping in and telling me that i can't charge what my art is worth... because i am an imposter. I enjoy your videos a lot and i totally feel the cold climate portion at the beginning of this one, as a fellow Canadian! Enjoy the holiday season, looking forward to more videos in 2024!
Thank you Patricia! Congrats on your retirement!🤗 Imposter syndrome is REAL, we all deal with it, but it truly gets better the more you dedicate yourself to your art. Happy creating and happy holidays!
Thanks so much, Brooke. This was an excellently timed video for me as I am coming to the end of a commission and it has been pretty nasty. Unfortunately, my client really liked one of the four sketches I did for her before I started on the full-sized painting, and after many "corrections" requested that I created an absolute copy of my sketch...only bigger. I feel like I have been trying to create a forgery of one of my creations...if that makes sense. It hasn't worked to her satisfaction, so now she is getting the sketch framed and some cards to go with it, and I get to keep the canvas and use a tonne of gesso and create something I want to create. Oh, and I did do the commission on a contract and so I get to keep the 50% payment...so long as I buy the frame and create many cards.... ;) Thank you for such humorous videos and for creating such beautiful pieces of art.
Thanks a lot for watching Janet! Happy creating for your next project 🤗
Excellent content
Gorgeous paintings! The mood in them is outstanding. ❤
Also, really enjoy the way you edit the parts where you paint on certain areas as they give a step by step kinda vibe, which is quite helpful for me personally. I’m quite inexperienced with this medium, which is why.
Thank you for this video! (:
I found you about a month ago. I’m a beginner artist in sculpting and am going to start wood burning as well. I’ve done one wood burning project before I tried sculpting and it wasn’t bad for using a soldering iron basically. 😂
See you next year. Have a great Christmas time or whatever it is you celebrate. Stay warm.
Thanks for watching and Merry Christmas to you too! 🤗
Beautiful work, Brooke! I just love your videos, always so fun to watch. Have a great 2024!
Thank you Lana! I appreciate it - all the best in 2024! 🤗
Very beautiful art Brooke!❤ It would be interesting to know how do you come up with the composition itself. Do you incorporate AI technology in your paintings?
This was a great video. See you next year Brooke, have a happy Christmas and New Year! 🤎
I appreciate it, thanks! Same to you 🥳
Thank you so much for this vid- I am a sculptor 4 years of uni etc.. aspiring sculptor still - & I hardly make work out of fear of the unknown
But you are so brave ❤ & when you love the work yourself - you make work to excite your own soul.. you will sell it eventually.. and only you can answer that 😊 good luck
on top of this stunning commision, you documented and made a video about it which is an undertaking in itself! Thank you so much for making this video. I am an artist and aspiring UA-camr and this was so inspiring and informative. I'm a fan! - Subscribed :) Cheers, Brooke!
Love the contrast between the background and the colorful flowers ❤ thank you so much for recording this process!
Thank you Erin! 🤗
I love your humor and personality!!!!
This was such a beautiful video
Glad you liked it, thank you for watching! ☺️
..this two paintings are so amazing, you are a great artist....greetings from Vienna 🎡
