  • In this video you'll follow along as I build an inexpensive, durable heavy sandbag that you can use for your strength training needs while gyms are shut down.
    The shell was originally ordered from:
    www.mcguirearmynavy.com/produ...
    BUT, you can order from any military surplus store, just search for:
    "military surplus seabag"
    The contractor bags used in this video:

    I think using things like gravel (smallish stones, pebbles, no sand), rubber mulch or wood pellets would be much cleaner and create a sandbag with a little more bulk for a lower weight. A huge bag filled completely with sand is super heavy.
    It is also much easier to make, you don't need to worry too much about inner liner bags, leaking and so on.

    • @travismholley
      @travismholley  Рік тому +7

      These are all good points. If you'd like to build a lighter sandbag, rubber mulch is a great way to provide volume without a bunch of added weight. Although, in my experience, the rubber mulch can have sharp points or edges, so the liner bag(s) are still a good step to take for added durability. Thanks for the comment and added info.

    Did you add sand, then gravel, then sand, then gravel? Just thinking about how evenly distribute the sand and gravel. Or does it matter?

    • @drewewerski1725

      I'd probably mix them together first and then put in.

    • @travismholley
      @travismholley  3 роки тому +5

      Kelly - I alternated the materials. As it gets used, it will end up mixing a bit more. The biggest issue that you’ll come across is using a bag that’s too big for the amount of material used to create weight. This scenario leads to a very loose sack vs a formed object. Rubber mulch is also a great material that offers a lot of volume w/o a lot of weight.

    What’s the purpose of lacrosse ball and ring vs just zip tying and ducking taping?

    • @travismholley
      @travismholley  3 роки тому +6

      The ring and lacrosse ball create a tighter chokepoint that keeps the sand from leaking out. When you just zip tie and duct tape the bag material there tends to be some small leaks that become more annoying than anything. Honestly, it will work either way - the lacrosse ball and ring just do a better job of keeping the sand put.

    Is it nylon? Polyester? Or a mix of them?
    I'm from India and I don't id find the bag just in any store so wanted to know the specific material it's made out of.
    Basically what material should the bag be of to ENDURE ALL THE POUNDING of huge weight?

    • @travismholley
      @travismholley  Рік тому +1

      Really any heavy duty trash bag would probably do the trick. If you go that route, I would do 3 of them to create a stronger liner. Another option would be to buy two of the shells and use one as the liner and the other as the shell. Hell, you could do 3 HD trash bags and two canvas shells. That would be nearly indestructible.

      Mike is correct. It's just a military sea bag. Easily found online. Depending on the weight you're aiming for you'll want to pay attention to size/volume of the bag. I would suggest buying a large and a small which just offers a ton of versatility.
