    Thanks so much for this DETAILED info! We don't encounter a lot of low light situations - thankfully - but good info to have in our back pocket! We do have a gimlal, the Inkee Falcon Plus that works really well for our needs. We chose that one because it was the only one, in our budget, and at the time, that supported our GoPro and the media mod. Thanks again for the great content!

    You can get even better results if you use the GoPro Labs firmware and turn off the automatic noise reduction. You'll be left with a ton of fine grained noise but also much more detail, you can then remove the noise in post getting a cleaner and much more detailed image. This also works for the GoPro 11.

    • @DrivingPhilippines

      !MNR01=1 is the Labs code to turn OFF Noise Reduction permanently, surviving reboots and battery changes. It works very well. I can record at 5.3k, 30fps, 100 min ISO to 1600 max ISO and does very well in low light environments.

    Go pro 12 is my first action camera. I had her for two weeks. During this time I tried all possible options. But I couldn’t get it to shoot at least satisfactorily in low light conditions, without a stabilizer. The whole problem is that to avoid blurring while moving, you must set the shutter speed to 250 or higher. This makes the video very dark. You should use ISO 3200-6400 in this mode. This adds a lot of noise. And still the picture remains dark. I also tried to fix this in post-processing, but the result was unsatisfactory. I tried shooting without stabilization and then using gyroflow to stabilize it. Filmed in hdr and gp-log. I installed the labs firmware and played with different settings there. Nothing helped. I'm tired of the fact that my $100 phone takes better pictures in the evening. Today I sold the camera. In a nutshell, owning it can be described as I love it and I hate it. She is beautiful during the day. And in the evening it's just a nightmare

  • @ldnwalkandfly8617
    @ldnwalkandfly8617 Місяць тому +1

    You mixed up something i assume, less shutter more cinematic blurre and less shattered the footage, right, thats why we use ND, and btw , more fps less pronounced shutter, so 60fps is better choice but in this case you have to rise shutter and picture getting darker

    What is the reason you turn off hypersmooth? I think I missed the reason or the impact it has on the image. I don't want to mess with a gymbal or do additional post processing steps. I get the shutter speed and ISO as I also do photography but was not sure on the impact of hypersmooth. Thanks!

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  5 місяців тому

      Great question. This is because Hypersmooth is a form of EIS (electronic image stabilization) and EIS needs a fast enough shutter speed in order to properly stabilize the video footage. Too slow of a shutter has too much motion blur for Hypersmooth to function properly. When filming in low light the GoPro will either adjust automatically to too slow of a shutter speed or for best results/fulfilling the 180 degree shutter angle, the shutter speed at 24fps or 30fps will be too slow for Hypersmooth to function properly and ghosting and jitter will be present in the footage.

    One question, if you you record at 8:7 and then crop into 16:9 in post, won't that give less detail than shooting at 16:9 right out of the camera?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  7 місяців тому +1

      Great question. It will be the same difference. The 16:9 coming out of the camera is a crop of the 8:7. The only difference is the crop is done in the camera vs when video editing. The 8:7 footage on a 16:9 timeline will have the same horizontal resolution but extra vertical resolution on the top and the bottom of the 16:9 frame which gives vertical adjusting flexibility if wanted.

    • @joyindeeamornchai754
      @joyindeeamornchai754 7 місяців тому +1

      @@GreatDayForAHike But if you crop a 5.3K 8:7 down to 16:9 will that still be the full 5.3K quality or less? When shooting 16:9 straight out of the camera the 5.3K is baked in the 16:9 and since there's no aspect ratio changing, it stays 5.3k right?

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  7 місяців тому +1

      @joyindeeamornchai754 Yes it will still be the full 5.3K quality the same as the baked-in 16:9 as long as you don’t crop any of the horizontal aspect beyond filling the 16:9 frame when editing.

    So I bought a hero 11. I shoot a lot of automotive off roading lights so I constantly power the lights on and off on a pitch dark road. Would this camera capture that footage crisp and clear? When I use my Samsung S23 ultra, I have to constantly focus it because if I don't focus it, as soon as the lights turn on, it's a massive bright blob. I'm hoping this gopro won't do that. Thanks!

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  6 місяців тому +2

      This will probably capture that to some extent. If you don’t need an action camera (if what you’re doing won’t break a camera easily) then something like the DJI Osmo Pocket 3 will perform better in low lighting. Low lighting is still one of the biggest challenge scenarios for action cameras and smaller cameras because of the larger sensor size being needed for really good results. Of course, cameras with those larger sensor cost a lot more, are a lot bigger in size, and not as durable as an action camera.

      If the camera is stationary and not moving at all you can turn off Hypersmooth fully. Then do Auto shutter with an ISO Min of 100 and ISO Max of 800. You could also use the exposure lock feature by pressing and holding on the display of the GoPro to keep proper exposure for the field. Abe Kislevitz from GoPro recommends the following (see below). I myself would go to 1600 ISO as max and would not like to miss out on the best noise reduction in low light if I will not do fancy noise reduction in post.
    „Lowlight
    If you’re looking to film indoors or at night, these modes will offer the best noise reduction and detail.
    Aspect Ratio: 16:9 or 4:3
    Resolution: 4K 4:3-30 | 4K-30 | 1080-60
    Lens: WIDE
    HyperSmooth: On
    These are the modes in the HERO11 that utilize a process of 3DNR noise reduction algorithms. You’ll see better detail and noise-handling in 4K-30 over using another similar mode such as 5.3K-30. If you need slow-motion, 1080-60 is the only mode that currently supports this 3DNR. Additional related mode that supports 3DNR is 4K-30 Superview.“

      Yes, a lot of the settings chosen will ultimately relate to what one is willing to do in post when editing and how many fancy plugins one wishes to purchase and use. The great thing is there are a lot of setting combos that can give good results. It just depends on how many tools one wants to use.

      The thing about 4K out of the box on GoPro 11 is that it over sharpens on medium and too blurry on low, apparently you're suppose to get this fancy 3DNR noise reduction but that doesn't change the bad sharpening of the 4K res, besides when you shoot 5.3K and downsample to 4K you are getting some noise reduction benefits there already but without the bad sharpening of the 4K res

    is GoPro The Handler (Floating Hand Grip) enough as alternative to gimbal?

  • @calvinatdrifterstudio8438

    Instead of buying a GoPro gimbal, just get an Osmo pocket 1 or two. It's basically a tiny GoPro on a tiny gimbal. Even the Osmo pocket 1 has great video up to 3200iso and super wide open aperture

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  6 місяців тому

      The brand new Osmo Pocket 3 is also a great option. It simply depends on use case since the Osmo Pocket cameras are not able to handle intense sports and are not waterproof.

    The golden rule for any videos of camera menus is they must be on a stationary device or tripod. In this case, the menu is moving constantly and keeps going in and out of focus.

    The main point of the video- turn the camera stabilization off and use the gimbal. That's not much helpful video.

    • @GreatDayForAHike
      @GreatDayForAHike  5 місяців тому +1

      That is the best way to get the very best low light footage from this camera. However, if one does not want to use a gimbal or turn off stabilization I do provide an alternative that will also get good low light results without footage ghosting and jitter.

    • @BryanMiraflor
      @BryanMiraflor 2 місяці тому +1

      @vodoyem that's literally all you can do with the gopro with low light. you HAVE to use a gimbal in low light. otherwise your camera will have jittery, grainy footage.
