"So often the Joker has been played as, sort of a harmless clown. Or a total raving psychotic madman. Which actually defeats the purpose of doing the character, because then he becomes totally unsavory." This guy gets it. The Joker is at his best when he's not only scary and crazy, but genuinely funny. It takes a lot of skill to blend those opposites together and not many get it right.

A similar character is Aku from Samurai Jack. Easily one of the funniest characters in the animation medium, but he could become a terrifying force of nature at the drop of a dime.
Bullwinkle was even funnier. In one scene, a ship captain said, "The ship is overloaded, so we'll have to toss something overboard: shall we toss a lifeboat, or passengers?" The crewmen yelled, "Passengers!" Narrator William Conrad said, "Well, we couldn't get away with it on a kid's show, so the lifeboat went over."
As much as I love Heath Ledger’s performance, and as much as I appreciate Jack Nicholson’s adaptation, there’s just something about Mark Hamil’s “Joker” that gives me the shivers in the best way possible.
“That actually is pretty funny” or similar to the Joker’s last line in Arkham Origins *laughs* stopped his heart but instead He’s my father, Good One [Bats] Vader, this is going to be fun!
+VultureClone As someone who has grown up with both Star Wars and Batman TAS, Mark has been both hero and villain. But, the villain part of him has always been more fun for me.
+VultureClone I have no doubt that he stretched this farther apart than anybody. No villain can top Joker, we know this for a fact. Few heroes can be as iconic as Luke Skywalker, and most of them typecast their actors.
I can already hear Hamill's interview for the extras: "And then I thought I had to actually use the force. Because I have become just too old to climb around on set."
Did you watch this video? Hamill is doing a lot more than just talking. He's giving a performance that would translate to mo-cap data. Also...Serkis IS a great voice actor!
I know, age would probably limit him quite a bit. Unless it was a more nuanced role that didn't require a lot of physicality. Now you got me thinking of Andy Serkis as The Joker...somehow I'm intrigued :)
As amazing as Heath Ledger and the tons of great Jokers we have had over the years have been, Mark Hamil's voice always shows up when I think of the Joker, by far the best Joker voice ever. It is so amazing that both he and Kevin Conroy, by far the best voice for Batman in my opinion, worked so many Batman projects together.
In the intro to the recent Joker respective, Hamill actually paid tribute to his "straight man", as he called Conroy. The two are a perfect acting match.
Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy are to the Joker and Batman what Peter Cullen is to the Transformers franchise. Peter Cullen, to thousands of people, will ALWAYS be Optimus Prime, which is why one of the few things Michael Bay got right was to get Cullen on board for the movies. (Fun fact: Keaton and Nicholson's run in the first movie actually predate BTAS) And yes, as brilliant as Ledger and Bale were, or Keaton and Nicholson, I grew up with Kevin Conroy's Batman and Mark Hamill's Joker. So they will always be the best for me
This is why the Joker is such a great villain for Batman. He’s exactly the opposite of Batman. Batman is dark and brooding, while Joker is joyful and happy. And while Batman wants to stop crime, Joker wants to have fun by committing it. Thats why he can relate to Batman so well. He’s exactly the opposite, but also has a personality with Batman and wants him to try and catch him. That’s how he has fun committing crimes. Challenging Batman to try and stop him.
That moment when he stands transformed and illustrates his descent into madness via that maniacal laughter just sold it. It was both tragic and menacing and "HELL YEAH".
What Hamill said at 3:19 - 3:25 just made me realized that he would've be an international radio star in the '30s-40's. Such an incredible talented guy. In fact, he should be in a movie or in a tv-series about the golden age of radio plays.
Darth Vader: I am your Father. Luke: NOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Oh what the heck I'll laugh anyway. AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Darth Vader: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
People are still raving about Heath Ledger playing the best Joker but Mark Hamill did everything extremely well. He can do all aspects from comedic to psychotic.
everyone likes heath ledger cause he was a crazy type of joker more of a I'll just kill ya type mark Hamill is the accumulation of the joker from clown to crazy gangster to anarchy he has it all
Heath Ledger was good. But he wasn't THE Joker that we all know and love from the comics. Even if it was just his voice, Mark Hamill perfectly embodied the character.
You can thank Mark's Broadway career for the Joker's laughs. Mark played Mozart in "Amadeus," and Wolfgang was well known for being coarse, and having a laugh that sounded like a "braying donkey." To keep it fresh during the run, Mark would add in impressions of other actors'/characters' laughs. He did LOTS of them, and used them when he auditioned for Joker. That's what he draws on now. Mark always wanted to be a character actor, and with VA he got his wish. He is a true "working actor." GIfted, professional, funny, courteous to coworkers, and a find for any production. May he live a long, long life.
+Mo Blaze if you look through his filmography he has basically voiced every single animated version of the joker there is... played the Arkham games? thats him too. Dude has a massive list of voice over roles.
I would say one of the things that makes the best versions of the Joker such a enjoyable villain is that despite how psychotic and crazy his actions are he is always having a blast doing his villain thing. And it is magnetic, his energy if infectious in that no matter how horrible the things he is doing are you still want to see more of it.
Though Hamill has the BEST Joker voice, it's the writing that was PERFECT! This nailed the character perfectly. An insane clown who just wants to get a laugh the only way he knows how, mass murder, but in a funny way.
This man has so much talent both in traditional acting as well as VA, the fact that Mark Hamill is also Fire Lord Ozai at the same time still blows my mind
NJ223Gaming if you think that Mark didn't became the Joker, you should check any of his "behind the scenes" recording sessions. Also check out the videos where Kevin Conroy talk about both Mark adn Heath and he said with right that Heath acomplished in screen what Mark already done
Amuscaria Mushrooms But that's not all. He's also The Trickster, which is a Flash villain and what Hamill based his Joker on. He even reprised the role for The Flash tv show. He reprised the role in JLU as well.
I think mark puts it best when he talks about the joker's laugh acting as a musical instrument which illustrates his mood. Its what gives Marks Laughs and portrayal of the Joker its life
I just love Mark Hamill as The Joker :) . His laugh is so amazing and i love his voiceperformance in the Arkham Games too and i am so excited for The Killing Joke :)
Nice of you to say Bats, but you of all people should know, there's plenty wrong with me. Take my blood for example. I wish someone would, this stuff is killing me! Loved his delivery of that line. And also ENCORE! MORE! BRAVO!!
As a little kid growing up watching the Animated show. Never in a million years I would have guessed that Mark Hamill played the voice of The Joker. In 2004-2005 when the show came out on DVD I was excited to get them all. I watched the show from start to finish, and watched the behind the scenes, the making of the show, interviews of the creators, producers, directors, and animators of the show, and it was cool to see what the voice actors looked like off screen because their was no internet or google to see who the voice actors looked like off screen in the late 90's, until they talked about who was the voice of The Joker it blew my mind away that Luke Skywalker was The Joker. I'm like What! Luke Skywalker and The Joker are the same person. As a joke it turns out Luke Skywalker did go to the dark side after all. LOL.
You sound like an old git. Kids have cartoons just as good as this nowadays. Take off your godamn nostalgia goggles. Source: I grew up in the 00's but I've also watched a few older stuff I missed such as Batman the animated series and Superman. One "cartoon" that I really enjoyed was Green Lantern Animated. Good old superhero buddy cop show with amazing scenes and lots of action. I also really liked Avatar: TLA. That is better than Batman in my opinion because the show has a definitive final purpose, unlike this Batman series which is much more episodic and doesn't have that good of a storyline in my opinion.
+Tri Led Heath Ledger took inspiration from a LOT of prior performances of The Joker. There's one point where he imitates Ceasar Romero's laugh, and other moments where he does little nods to other Jokers. But Heath Ledger also did the psychotic mastermind as the primary performance, which is why his performance was so well received. Heath Ledger's Joker was the scary, method to his madness, almost unstoppable force of nature Joker. Mark Hamill's is the mad killer clown you love to hate, but can't help wanting to see again.
They sorta did this with a short in the Justice League Action show. Mark voiced Joker, Trickster, SwampThing and himself in it. To me the funniest part was Joker not knowing what a voice actor was.
Joker-Theres no escape...dont make me destroy you. Joker-Bruce you do not yet realize your importance! You've only begun to discover your power! Join me and I will complete your training! With our combined strength we can end this destructive conflict and bring order to Gotham! Batman-I'll never join you! Joker-If you only knew the power of the dark side! Joker-Commisioner Gordon never told you who killed your father did he? Batman-He told me enough!...He told me you killed him! Joker-No!...I am your father! Batman-*utter shock*...No! No! Thats not true!...Thats impossible!!! Joker-Search your feelings you know it to be true! Batman-NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! Joker-Just kidding! *signature Joker laugh* xD
SuperGiantRobot Rocket Of course, in another video during a show or convention, he was asked to do a conversation between Joker and Luke. Joker: Luke, it's me! Heehee! The Clown Prince of Crime, and also your father. Luke: NOOOOOOO! That's not true. That's impossible! Joker: Get used to it, kiddo. *Joker laugh*
Batman: The Animated Series is easily the best TV show ever made. I feel that nothing will ever get close to how perfect the show was. A huge part of that was Mark Hamill's amazing performance as the Joker. You can't have Batman without his Joker. Likewise The Dark Knight movie would have only been half as good if they hadn't picked a great actor to be the Joker.
Let us also remember Kevin Conroy as Batman, who defined the character so much from 1992 on that to this day, he is the voice actor of choice for the role with fans. One need only remember his recent jobs of this on the Arkham games to see the truth of that statement. Hamill himself, in the intro to a Joker book, paid tribute to his long-time "straight man".
Jesus Christ Heath Ledger was doing the very violent and realistic comic book version that we never saw in the animated content. Mark Hamill did an excellent cartoon version of the Joker and even showed much of his psychology, but it simply wasn't realistic. That was perfectly fine for animation, but the movie needed a touch of realism that Heath Ledger delivered. This is coming from a long time fan of the animated content and Mark Hamill.
This was the first version laugh of joker and i personally think it's perfect for jokers face and behavior. The voice of mark hamill for joker is a masterpiece.
If I was at a stop light and looked over to the other driver and saw that it was Mark Hamill laughing and cackling evilly to himself, my life would be complete and happy.
I love Mark Hamill's acting chops on this. His work set the gold standard for the Joker. And not too long after Jack Nicholson had done his amazing work with the character. Really the whole show was a perfect storm of art, writing, directing, and acting.
Wild how Mark Hamill's best known rolls are this staple paragon knightly hero, that takes from samurai movies and classic fantasy who teaches all these good heroic and good messages, and then the arguably most well known and archetypal villain in modern pop culture. Wild
He's my favorite Joker and he always will be. He got me into Batman in the first place, and now I absolutely adore all of the characters, including the villains!
I want to say I feel dumb for not ever having known Luke Skywalker was the voice of the Joker. But then again his Joker voice sounds nothing like him so it's k. But damn, the things you find out when you do some research.
It's okay...given that Hamill has been doing what he can to shed the Luke Skywalker role for well over a decade before Joker rolled around, I daresay that was the idea. He had to disappear into voice acting to keep working. In fact, he popped up on the old Lucasarts game "Full Throttle" in three different roles and I know that he had a villainous part in the English dub for "Castle In the Sky" (which sounded nothing like the Joker).
Azatarot75 It's crazy how actors have it in the industry. If you do a consistent amount of movies that don't have sequals or part 2's, 3's and 4's, you most of the time get referred to by your actual name. Or the name of a particular movie you stuck out in the most, until you have another movie that sticks out better, or a bunch that are really well. But if you stick to one franchise, if you play in a part in a several movie showcase then you often only get remembered and looked at as the character you role played for that series of films. Although honestly, with enough work you can at least push to be known as something or someone else in other movies if you really try. Harrison Ford today is known as Harrison Ford. Rather than originally known as Han Solo, and then as Indiana Jones. Because he broke free from Han Solo with the Indiana Jones movies. And then he broke free of those movies later with several blockbuster hit movies. Even today while he has revived Indiana Jones and might possibly star in the newer Star Wars movies, he's known as Harrison Ford. Johnny Depp was known for several different character roles over the years. But unusually he's still known to many people for all kinds of roles he's played. But still he's been able to break into so many characters that people know enough to call him Johnny Depp when referring to him, rather than Captain Jack Sparrow or Edward Scissor Hands. If Mark Hamill put the effort in, he could of broken away too from Luke Skywalker's image without having to drown away into voice acting. Han Solo was often a much more noticeable character in the original Star Wars than Luke. Even though Luke was supposed to be the main character of them all. And Han Solo went off to become different characters in different movies until he broke from being known as just Han Solo. To be honest, Mark had the kind of face of a popular teen chics probably wanted to be with. He easily could of played out in several teen angst movies throughout the 70s and 80s and made a name for himself in other movies. He had that tan skin, straight blonde hair and that kind of face to easily hit hard in dozens of the classic 70s and 80s teen angst films that did come out. Albeit, he had no look to be a villain in a fictional movie. But that wouldn't mean he couldn't play in any of the countless amounts of fictional movies that came out over the years. If he had bulked up he could of actually been a much better He-Man in the old movies than Lundgren was. Not to say Lundgren did bad but young Mark Hamill actually could of had the exact comic look nailed down if he grew the strength. And hardcore actors really do make that kind of effort to fit into roles for things they like. For example, Will Smith gained pounds of weight and muscle for his role in Ali (2001). And he gained more for iRobot and I Am Legend. Tom Cruise did the same for several movies. Brad Pitt did too. And tons of actors have re-sculpted their bodies to play parts. Heck look at the most recent body transformations. Like Taylor Lautner bulking up for Twilight. And furthermore a much different transformation, Matthew McConnaughey actually lost both muscle and fat to look the part of a cancer diagnosed person in The Dallas Buyers Club. If Mark Hamill really wanted to, he could of broke away from the light of Luke Skywalker. He had the look, the talent and the skill. Maybe he just wasn't sure he could though. It happens. __________ Excuse the lengthy post btw. I like to write lol.
Infamous Kalen No worries on the amount of writing...I do plenty myself, LOL. From what I understand, Hamill had been attempting to do just what you were prescribing back in the day but, for some reason, it just never took. It wasn't until he got into voice acting that he finally found the freedom he'd been looking for all along. None of which is to say that he neglected his actual acting. He did do some onscreen stuff in the 1990s in the Wing Commander franchise of video games (this was during the "interactive movie" craze where you could occasionally find decent actors doing such work; that's actually how I first discovered Clive Owen in "Privateer 2: The Darkening") and one of the episodes in the Outer Limits revival, among other things. But let's face it: when he went onto define Joker, it was the same kind of gold strike that Luke Skywalker had been, albeit one that let him have more flexibility. Lightning like that rarely strikes twice in a career, so I am grateful that Hamill (who, by most accounts I've heard, is probably one of the most likeable, nicest guys in this business and when one of those accounts are the notoriously prickly Harlan Ellison, I tend to take those stories seriously) managed to get the renaissance in his career that he did.
Azatarot75 I gotta agree with you there. Being able to strike the way he did in 2 different things is a feat of its own. It would be like if Daniel Radcliffe, the guy who played Harry Potter in all 8 films, wound up starring in something else and being remembered just as heavily for that as they were for Harry Potter. Would be a feat of its own. Mark Hamill has always given off that appeal that he's a really nice person. Which makes it just that much more crazy that he truly is the voice of the Joker. And not just the voice of the Joker, but practically the best and most notorious voice over of the Joker that there ever has been. I honestly can't picture anyone else playing that voice. I have to wonder though. There is talk about Harrison Ford coming back for the next Star Wars movies which are supposed to take place after the original first 3 in the 70s/80s. I wonder if Mark Hamill will reprise his role as Luke Skywalker in those movies too. Would be cool.
Infamous Kalen The Radcliffe comparison is apt. Kristen Stewart is also someone else who comes to mind who has fallen into much the same trap that Hamill did with Star Wars. As to Hamill as the Joker, let's be straight: much as I love Heath Ledger in "The Dark Knight" and appreciate how Jack Nicholson helped pave the way in the original "Batman" (let us remember that Batman TAS was originally intended to be just another quick cash-in spin-off from that movie before doing its own thing), Hamill owns the role. My favorite performance of him as Joker has to be in the Justice League Unlimited episode "Injustice For All", where he's trying to convince Lex Luthor to finish off Batman but Lex refuses to listen. Check the clips on that here some time...it's great stuff! The Star Wars thing...ehh. It would only be cool if done right. Only time will tell if they do indeed do it right. If that's the case, then, yes, having Hamill onboard would certainly help.
Talent: When you've played an iconic hero for six years, a psychotic villain for 14 years, and tons of different voice-roles and still be unrecognizable.
Kal El The only voice I despise. Look up the real Darth Bane from the books. Looks nothing like Clone Wars. Seriously why did they have to fuck up Darth Bane.
Darth Cinema Technically Darth Bane wasn't even canon before his appearance in Clone Wars. And Mark Hamill was nominated for an emmy just from that one brief performance so it definitely wasn't a poor portrayal of the character. Not to mention in that scene Darth Bane was dead and it was just a manifestation of his Force energy, so it kind of makes sense that it doesn't exactly resemble him. It's a stretch though.
It's crazy because I knew Mark Hamill played Joker but before I actually got into star wars it didn't really click in my head that the same guy played Luke and Joker, and even after that it's still so bizarre. I try to hear traces of Mark's usual way of talking in his Joker performances and it's just so believable as another totally different voice. It's so fascinating
I still can't believe that one of the most iconic heroes in fiction is also one of the most notorious villains in fiction.
You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain.
***** Or numerous villains in Hammil's case- The Watcher from Darksiders, Von Nebula and Black Phantom from Hero Factory, take your pick.
Dan Eyal true but it seemed like a funny quote that was oddly fitting.

I can already hear Hamill's interview for the extras: "And then I thought I had to actually use the force. Because I have become just too old to climb around on set."
Neumannfilms Rocksteady did video record his voice sessions and used many of his movements and expressions in the animation.
(Fun fact: Keaton and Nicholson's run in the first movie actually predate BTAS)
And yes, as brilliant as Ledger and Bale were, or Keaton and Nicholson, I grew up with Kevin Conroy's Batman and Mark Hamill's Joker. So they will always be the best for me
how bout george clooney as batman? you never liked it? hahahahaha
Baron Von Wolf same here so true.. Its a mark in my youth as well
I think Hamill has gone on record saying if he’s approached to voice Joker, he’s usually down but usually if Kevin Conroy is voicing Batman
Mark was born to voice this role. Arkham is within Mark Hamill’s name.

I actually wanna see Mark Hamill laugh manically in his car...
I saw the killing Joke and had to hear mark laugh again

What Hamill said at 3:19 - 3:25 just made me realized that he would've be an international radio star in the '30s-40's. Such an incredible talented guy. In fact, he should be in a movie or in a tv-series about the golden age of radio plays.
He and Seth McFarlane! Seth says those are the radio shows that he used to refine his voices and singing...
Thank you Luke Skywalker for voice acting the greatest villain ever.
Mark Hammil was a big part of the ol' childhood
The image of Mark Hamill driving down a highway laughing like the Joker is one of the best images in my mind.
Imagine seeing Mark Hamill driving while maniacally cackling

Hamill: **JOKER LAUGH**

People are still raving about Heath Ledger playing the best Joker but Mark Hamill did everything extremely well. He can do all aspects from comedic to psychotic.
Isaiah Quidilla Actually the popular opinion seems to be Mark Hamill > every other Joker on most of these YT videos. Not surprising either.
everyone likes heath ledger cause he was a crazy type of joker more of a I'll just kill ya type mark Hamill is the accumulation of the joker from clown to crazy gangster to anarchy he has it all
Heath Ledger was perfect as opposed to Hamill speaking into a microphone.

David Smith A lot of people probably thought he would be a one hit wonder
Actuallly, Mark did voice over work before he started getting work on tv series, and he's been doing impressions since he was a kid.

LOL.
Mark has got to be one of the greatest voices for the joker it’s so authentic

+Tri Led Heath Ledger took inspiration from a LOT of prior performances of The Joker. There's one point where he imitates Ceasar Romero's laugh, and other moments where he does little nods to other Jokers. But Heath Ledger also did the psychotic mastermind as the primary performance, which is why his performance was so well received.
Heath Ledger's Joker was the scary, method to his madness, almost unstoppable force of nature Joker.

That would be great for Batman in a confrontation scene with the joker in Batman the musical
Agreed
Let us also remember Kevin Conroy as Batman, who defined the character so much from 1992 on that to this day, he is the voice actor of choice for the role with fans. One need only remember his recent jobs of this on the Arkham games to see the truth of that statement. Hamill himself, in the intro to a Joker book, paid tribute to his long-time "straight man".
heath ledger was awful but if you think he was good then thats cool but you will be known as a liar
Shaun Pearson Couldn't have put it better myself
Jesus Christ
Heath Ledger was doing the very violent and realistic comic book version that we never saw in the animated content.
Before Mark Hamill or Caesar Romero, I wonder how people imagined how the joker sounded like.
Someone should find recordings of the old radio shows so we can find out. :D
How can we not love Mark Hammil. It´s impossible.

I love Mark Hamill's acting chops on this. His work set the gold standard for the Joker. And not too long after Jack Nicholson had done his amazing work with the character.
Really the whole show was a perfect storm of art, writing, directing, and acting.
Mark Hamill is the "Joker". He makes him live ,you can't help but see the Joker when you hear Mark talk . It is great
Wild how Mark Hamill's best known rolls are this staple paragon knightly hero, that takes from samurai movies and classic fantasy who teaches all these good heroic and good messages, and then the arguably most well known and archetypal villain in modern pop culture.
It happens.
__________
Excuse the lengthy post btw.
"There's nothing historical about clowns and bats."
Well there is now
Thank you Mark Hamill for making one of my favourite villains EVER sooooooooooooo awesome !!!
Mark Hamill also voice act a Sith Lord in the Clone War Series.
+willster191 He was canon. Even is said in the novelization for one of the prequel films. Before Disney wiped the slate of the EU.
