It should be illegal, but politicians make the laws... the same politicians who receive the gifts. So it is not going to happen. Even if it did happen, the next government would simply pass a bill to repeal them.
James is out of touch on this issue. The suits are one thing, indicative of Starmer liking his position and the perks, the sense of entitlement he gives off when questioned on it. The bigger story however is Labour being bought by a hedge fund.
@@adaml8827 Quadrature Capital was the hedge fund. Based in the Cayman Islands. They are hold shares of fossil fuels, private health, and arms manufacturing companies. Starmer didn't quite declare his "gifts' though, did he? He set off declaring his Savile Row suits as office expenses. He then changed his declaration to clothing at a later date. He then provided the excuse that he was unable to go to the tailor's shop due to his fame and security concerns (do remember this man is a multi-millionaire and could call shops to come to him). In the meantime, he failed to declare his wife's clothing gifts, the payments made to a luxury shopping assistant provided for her, and even the cost of alterations. Curiously he seems to have been able to attend an optician in order to get the prescription needed for new glasses which were also paid for by his friend. His friend then received a pass for number 10 Downing Street. It's all a bit grubby really.
Why is James so obsessed with comparing everything to the Tories. Like I get it they were bad. But you don't compare bad athletes with other bad athletes you compare them to the best athletes in whatever sport you're looking at. The last Torie government was bad but in the end Boris bad behavior caught up with him Truss got the boot and Sunak was bad and got voted out. The system worked as intended. James has fallen for his fotballafication but it's hatred for what the Tories did. It's time to move on and compare Stamer to the best politicians in history.
It didn't really catch up with him he's now making a fortune doing after dinner speeches to "thinktanks" when he should be in jail ,but yes O'Brien is a hypocrite
All they had to do was show some integrity and not accept free stuff , whether it’s within the rules or not the optics of it stink . What man needs someone to buy his glasses for him ffs
I swear they screen these people so O' Brian looks intelligent. The simple fact is that something can be immoral without being illegal. Being a hypocrite isn't illegal either. Starmer however, is both of these things and the fact that he took the moral high ground yet has proven to be just as bad as the tories means that he should be held to account. Dressing someone else's flat to look like your own is an obvious sign of this. James O'Brian would scream "no rules were broken", which is possible but why go to lengths to hide it? The same with using his son as some kind of excuse when the dates don't add up.

James is a million miles off on Starmer. The issue about clothes and gifts only a side issue which hurts more due to him targetting the least broad shoulders in pensioners just above UC, Long term Sick, Unemployed all the most vunerable whilst leaving the richest alone. It is without doubt Starmer lives to be made to feel important and to be fussed over. if you look into him as head of Public Prosecutions his expenses were double his predecessor including chauffer driven rides back n forth to the office, first and business class flights and travel the list goes on. I havent heard OBrien talk of the punitive policies coming in. Comparing him to the last lot of crooks is not a reason to give him a pass for being a Tory lite austerity party. He did tell us thats what he was gonna do in fairness he didnt hide it and sicafants like JOB who is so self delusional, arrogant and unable to take his blinkers off until its rammed home will continue to be his knight in shining armour
We haven't even had the first budget yet, so how do you know who they will be "targeting"? The only reason they announced the winter fuel payments change was so that those entitled to pension credit could make sure they claimed it before the deadline to still get a winter fuel allowance.
I think there is a difference between the law and ethics. Imposing unacceptable cuts on the weak in society whilst taking thousands in donations for suits - that's unethical. Who I vote for is dictated by their ethics, and their actions in power - not their BS and this is BS.
Starmer thinks like the lawyer he is and clearly hasn’t done anything technically ! Cmon James his lack of emotional intelligence is damning - So stop defending Starmer and accept the empathetic and more emotional agenda of the fact that as our leader he should be putting himself in the shoes of the general public - where his service rather his freebies is supposed to come first!
The vast majority of these freebies were while he was in opposition. By the way, parliamentary rules are that ministers do not have to declare gifts. So chances are that the Tories who served in the cabinet of the past 14 years, in particularly the Johnson cabinets onwards, did a lot more gift acceptance than stated. I say Starmer should ban 100% all gifts...just watch the change in tune from the Tories, Farage, and the rightwing press! It will hurt them a lot more than Labour.
The Tories 'lost' £37bn with test and trace. That's a bit more than a few clothes and a pair of specs. Bozo received gifts and made the givers Peers, that's corruption.
From a press report: ''Over recent years, a key commitment of the Labour party has been to scrap or cut university tuition fees in England. During his Labour leadership campaign in 2020 , Sir Keir included it in his list of ten pledges. '' Labour have now just announced they are going up!
I think he's trying (and I would, suggest, succeeding) to defend reality, actually. Facts matter, and this gentleman's completely inability to grasp that means his arguments fall apart like (somewhat ironically) a cheap suit.
this isn't the first time starmer has been caught out, and the usual excuse is to blame 'advice' he's been given, seems pretty clear starmer is routinely hiding his expenses, (e.g. he's clearly undervalued his accomodation freebies) and only telling us about them properly when he's caught out by somebody, despite the nature of them being clear to any sensible person
is he fit to be Prime Minister ? He should be strong enough to sack Reeves for the insane policy of freezing pensioners to death to ''save'' a piddling amount of the total budget.
James has confused what is illegal and what basic human morals are. For Keir to have the gall to punish pensioners then openly declare he has received hundreds of thousands of private donations and spent them lavishly on himself is beyond the pale. Not to mention, what exactly is Lord Ali is getting out of this? The whole situation is highly unusual and I wouldn't be surprised if Keir has been compromised either willingly or unwillingly.
@mjcats2011 Yeah, totally agree. The Tories don't hide who they are, but the hypocrisy from Labour is staggering. Starmer's alienation of certain groups has only fueled tensions. Taking money from OAPs while enjoying freebies himself is a terrible look. And let's not forget his overreach into people's lives-it all adds up.
Must be really hard for somone as intelligent as James O'Brien to realise that after telling everyone to vote labour they turn out to be just like the tories. Shame

It may be within the rules. But accepting bribes as gifts is despicable when you think Starmer earns £130,000 is too tight to buy his wife a frock? Come on!
I'm aligned politically with O'Brien but I find him a little dishonest in the way he sets up callers like this. He likes to give the impression that his skillful questioning leads the caller into an embarrassing cul-de-sac but it doesn't really.
Strange that you should comment several times on different videos of an actual show to which you claim never to have listened. Closed caption reading, perhaps?😂😂
I don't supose it has occured to anybody commenting on here that the suits, and the dresses, were gifts from a man in the media business for PR image management to present Starmer, his cabinet and his wife as a party of government, as opossed to the Wurzel Gummidge and rent a dress embrrassments that Carrie and Johnson presented to the world. Did he also gift Starmer with cashmere hoodies, or Gucci slides to wear in his spare time.? I think not. And does King Charles not fund Kates wardrobe for the same reason?
I thought James O'Brien's position would be that although the donations were declared and within the rules, he would ponder the political relationship with Lord Alli, Sue Grey and her son and so on.
James I enjoy your show, but at times you tend to bully and patronise callers, and you are better than that. You know the point the caller was making, but you just tried to override him rather than discuss things with him. I've heard you do this a number of times and it's a bit cringe to listen to.
What people don't like about Starmer is he takes money from struggling pensioners saying they shouldn't get free money and then thinks it's ok for him to get loads of free luxury goodies.
On old woman wanting to keep her winter fuel payments, despite her house now being worth a few bob that she can't access: 'Greedy!!' says James O'Brien. Multi millionaire Starmer taking tens of thousands of pounds to buy suits. 'Perfectly legit' says James O'Brien.

@Chad-kk5oz No I cant. I just know it’s wrong for them all to accept gifts of such magnitude. Gifts which are bound to affect how they react when a favour is asked in return. It’s disgusting, and I thought Starmer was claiming to be better than that.

All taken together, none of these issues add up to much.
Case dismissed.
@@perspicaciouscritic Nobody is saying it is illegal but it may well have had significant influence on Government policy . . .
Lord Alli is a shrewd and very successful businessman who will expect a return on his investment - that is the hazard here
It should be illegal, but politicians make the laws... the same politicians who receive the gifts. So it is not going to happen.
Even if it did happen, the next government would simply pass a bill to repeal them.
James is out of touch on this issue. The suits are one thing, indicative of Starmer liking his position and the perks, the sense of entitlement he gives off when questioned on it.

Quadrature Capital was the hedge fund. Based in the Cayman Islands.
They are hold shares of fossil fuels, private health, and arms manufacturing companies.
Finding the benefit is not easy to pin down. Hence the reason people don't like a political party taking donations from monied interests.
Hedge funds have a fiduciary duty to gain the highest returns possible for their clients. A hedge fund giving political donations by default has to be in an effort to gain increased returns.
No he's not, You don't agree with him because he's 100% correct on his assessment of the Tories 14yrs of mismanaging the UK government and were tossed out on their ear for it!🤨get over it!!🤔
He is very biased and very patronising whenever somebody has an opinion which is different to his.

Dressing someone else's flat to look like your own is an obvious sign of this. James O'Brian would scream "no rules were broken", which is possible but why go to lengths to hide it?
