Well it has become expensive to live in Paradise that most of the U.S does not have. In florida it’s lovely and filled with sunshine ☀️ most of all the year. While the rest is coated in snow for 7-10 months of the year or cloudy grey and raining with cold weather like in the North East. Florida has been on the more affordable side for far too long. It should be a lot more expensive to buy homes than it has been. Biden’s inflation over the last 3 years hasn’t helped either. People with fixed incomes or the low paid should move to cheaper, colder states that the 1,100 people per day that can afford to move to Florida are doing. Supply versus demand also drives up prices in Florida. With a large population of 23 million people probably much more that are illegal.

It's cheaper to self-insure. When you think about it you realize Insurance is basically a second mortgage. You pay the value of your home every 10 years or so in premiums. At least here in Florida.
If You put that money in savings you will collect interest on it. On average once every 10 to 15 years you might have to spend. 10 years of insurance premiums is about 50 to 70 thousand dollars for most of us. Claims will unlikely be that much. They pay a fraction for depreciation. They wont insure you unless you have a new roof every 10 years. You likely wont won't have to do any repairs cuz they're forcing to do maintenance earlier than necessary.

    • @maggieke4387

@@maggieke4387 Many people re-fi or take out home eq loans adding more time to pay off their loan. When deciding on a loan take the shortest term you can stand. 10 or 15 seems to be the sweet spot. The difference between steps become minimal at that point.
Me for example, the difference was $125 a month between 10 and 15 year and $75 between 15 and 30 year. 75 dollars less to add 15 years is not a fair deal. I went with 10 on my last loan. I kind of regretted not going the 15 year, but the loan is over now. Now I am free of all the BS. Do your time and get it over with as fast as possible. Insurance is not what it used to be. I now have liability, because I was sued over nonsense. With all the personal injury scams every one is looking for a free ride.

What an ignorant comment. Insurance companies are FLEEING the state in droves. They are simply tired of being scammed by Florida homeowners who have an old, worn-out roof that's 15-to-20-years old and think their homeowner's policy is supposed to pay for their brand-new roof. Florida courts and regulators have been siding with the homeowners. The insurance companies are losing money on every policy they write, so they're leaving. When we are left with NO insurance companies the Florida taxpayers will have to buy everyone a new roof every 10-to-15 years from now on.

Inrurance rates are based on the characteristics of you home. The bigger and nicer the home, the more you should expect to pay in insurance. Also FL is the most vulnerable state in the US for catastrophic perils and it drains capital from Insurers.
You either move out of FL or get a less expensive home to rebuild and a more current building codes or retrofit your home.
Insurance is in every part of our lives and it is up to us choose what is important without sacrificing comfort. You go with Luxury expect to pay the cost for it.

Not really it’s more like Tornado alley. States like Alabama,Georgia,Kansas, we lived in Minnesota for 22 years and because of environmental reasons we got hit 4 times that we had to do claims from a damaged property. Hail, tornadoes and freezing temperatures made the pipes Burst destroying half the house. In florida for a few years and absolutely nothing happened. It depends where you choose to buy a home. Buy cheaper houses and they usually are in areas that get more storm damage or flood damage. More expensive enclaves are usually in places where they suffer way less damage if any. Unfortunately for the more middle class but true.
Places like Ft. Meyers in florida where houses are not that expensive and any areas in the the South West get hit hardest. My aunt lives in St. Pete right on the water. Never had been hit not even once in the 25 years she has lived in florida. Not even close to her area. Storms always venture away from her more expensive area.

The building or buying of a house in a state surrounded by water with shorelines/beaches below sea level with insurance companies charging premiums prices for the cost of insuring personal properties, homes, and businesses against the eventuality of wind damage, flooding, or destruction by natural disaster has nothing to do with sea level rise or global warming.

I live in FL and my roof is 12 years old. I don’t pay a “double mortgage” as you say in your comment. When I got a re-quote for my homeowners insurance (Citizens) it went down $115 for the year!

I wish I could. I have 11 more years to retirement, then I'm out.
