  • I started testosterone over two years ago, but it's been a wild ride. In this video, I talk about my choices and changes I experienced along the way. I don't emphasize enough in this video that it's also okay to not be sure if HRT is right for you! If that's you, the trans people in your life are a great research or therapy if you have access to it.

    No hate but it's really important to go through gender therapy before and during your transition. Otherwise people who confuse dysmorphia with gender dysphoria etc etc ruin their life when that could have been prevented in the first place.

    hey i know this is an older video but i still wanted to comment. im really glad that you talked about this. i feel a lot of people don't understand the full scope of even trying to get HRT let alone how it feels to actually be on it. i'm so happy you we're able to do informed consent, honestly i really wish i could have done the same but at that point in my life even though i was 19, my parents felt they had both a say and control over what i did with my own body. finding a therapist who is even able to "sign off" on someone getting HRT is hard and so expensive! also knowing this stranger has power to dictate how you live your life is so terrifying. because at the end of the day, meeting with these people and having to share so much personal information, things i didn't even talk about with my regular therapist, and have it be judged and analyzed by someone you don't know who is not in your head to determine if you are "trans enough" to get medical help. it's entirely based on this person's biases (usually for binary trans people) and their opinion of if they feel you've suffered enough to be able to do something to your own body. i initially came out as nonbinary in highschool, but felt like i had to basically make myself more masculine to be taken seriously by doctors. because being nonbinary wasn't "trans enough" even though i had pretty severe dysphoria, mainly relating to my chest, voice, and uterus. eventually i was able to get on T, and the endocrinologist suggested to me by this gender therapist was extremely transphobic. she would deadname me and misgender me even though she KNEW i was there because i was trans and for HRT. she had no empathy whatsoever for my situation, even at one point saying that because i was letting my (intense) fear of needles which caused me to miss doses i "didn't want it bad enough" also she made no effort in telling me about other alternatives to the intermuscular injection (which btw is about a 2inch long and thicker gauge needle) needless to say.... i stopped going to her, and naturally i ran out of T. it wasn't till about 2-3 years later that i found an amazing doctor, he was an OBGYN but also an endocrinologist who specialized in working with trans and nonbinary people. he even had a whole form that would go in my file and on my records stating my chosen name, pronouns, and gender. saying that if anyone in the office didn't respect me or would misgender/deadname me, that he wanted to know so he could talk with them. he helped me find a new way of taking T (a subcutaneous injection that was basically an epipen of T) as well as helping me with birthcontrol options (and totally supporting me in wanting to get an IUD) he also asked me what my ideal would be when it came to medical transition, something i had never had someone ask up to this point. when I told him that I wanted hormones to help with voice changes and things of that nature up to a point, top surgery, and a hysterectomy (but not bottom surgery as most people saw it) he was so kind and supportive. saying that he wanted to help me on my path of transition and that it didn't have to be like anyone else's. i was on T for about a year (maybe more i dont remember) before I felt comfortable enough in where my body was at with changes from hormones that I stopped taking them. I'm not detransitioning, im taking it at a pace that makes sense for me, my goals, and my wellbeing.
    TLDR: there's no one way to be trans, and telling someone their way of expressing who they are is wrong just because it doesn't fit your understanding or narrative needs to stop. also there's no such thing as "trans enough" its horrible and has such a detrimental impact on trans and nonbinary people's lives. just because we don't follow your path, doesn't mean ours is wrong.

    Not having to complete gender therapy to be able to get hrt?? That seems really dangerous considering how many people there are who thinks they are trans even though they are not, because so many people on social media are claiming that you for example dont need dysphoria to be trans, or are just confusing gender identity with gender expression. If someone who is not trans transitions they are going to experience dysphoria, and therefore it is really important that people go through gender therapy before doing any physical changes, to make sure they are not just confused.

    While uh, you do need dysphoria to be trans, I agree that people shouldn't feel required to medically transition in order to feel valid. The only reason I say dysphoria is required is because it's the key component to being transgender. Without needing dysphoria to be trans, then anyone and everyone could be trans if they wanted to, which is not helpful to our already marginalized community. I don't know, feel free to debate me if you want. I'm open to having a mature conversation on it

    • @renedegames7219

    • @notyourdaughter666
      @notyourdaughter666 5 років тому +9

      • Pasteldark • so imo I think that the actual want to become trans is dysphoria in itself, because it is discomfort with your gender. Although I would say it’s definitely not as extreme as some people have it. There’s also the concept of gender euphoria which is the opposite of dysphoria, where you feel amazing when you’re gendered correctly. So I think that literally all trans people DO have dysphoria in one way or another. It’s just not as extreme as some others have it. Like a cis person who doesn’t want to be called by anything other than their pronouns assigned at birth aren’t trans because they don’t want to be anything else, so they don’t have dysphoria. But a cis person who would prefer being called by different pronouns other than what they were assigned at birth is then socially dysphoric and has social dysphoria and then is trans. See my logic? I hope that makes sense, I like having mature and civil debates.

      @@notyourdaughter666 I definitely agree! Dysphoria comes in all different intensities and someone saying that they're more comfortable as one gender than the other, getting discomfort (but not hatred) from being called the wrong pronoun, or even that they get euphoria is 100% a form of dysphoria. A lot of tucutes really do get it confused and think they don't have dysphoria when they actually do. So yes, I completely agree with you on your standpoint

    • @lucasreynolds9205
      @lucasreynolds9205 5 років тому +21

      Rene DeGames - You need dysphoria to be trans because there’s no other motivator to transition. From my personal experience, and the experience of many many other trans people, transition is a horrible experience that is so lengthy and feels so awful, and without dysphoria there would be no reason to do this. Gender dysphoria is a recognised medical condition that is treated by transitioning, transitioning is not something that can be done by anyone who wishes to whenever because they do not need it. Transitioning without dysphoria is taking up resources that the trans community need, and are there is enough gatekeeping already around that, even in the UK where I’m from. Transitioning is necessary to people who feel dysphoria, whether it be just social, medical or surgical.
      That being said, I do believe a lot of people who say they don’t feel dysphoria do actually but don’t label it as such because it sheds a negative light on their experiences- they want to be proud of who they are, and recognising they went through an awful experience cements the idea in some anti-trans communities heads that being trans is wrong.
      I’m not saying it is required to transition to be trans, and I’m not saying you cannot be trans if you don’t label your dysphoria as such, etc. I’m saying dysphoria of some form is required to be transgender and to transition. To transition in most countries, other than through informed consent in America obviously, you need a diagnosis with dysphoria.
      A lot of cis girls, especially, are misguided by more liberal communities into thinking their dislike of femininity or want to be different means they’re trans. Stating trans people need dysphoria prevents this, and allows them to grow their own identity if they are unsure, before deciding something so potentially detrimental or difficult for them. It’s a fact that a lot of trans experiences are a phase, and that’s okay. Most kids go through exploration of gender expression, and many continue it into their adult lives. However, they stay cis. There is a difference between wanting to break boundaries, and having to medically and surgically alter yourself in order to treat a condition you have. THAT is what being transgender is, and THAT is why you need dysphoria in order to be trans.

    i was on hrt for 5 months before my mental health got so bad that i had to stop. it’s weird that something that helped my dysphoria immensely had also made it worse as i was so focused on the fact that i’ll never be never be a cisgender male. it had also worsened my body dysmorphia which i was genuinely not expecting to happen. hopefully i’ll be healthy enough that i can start testosterone again.
    stopping testosterone for whatever reason is a totally valid decision and can give a person more time to think about their identity, recover from mental illness, etc.

    Tamoxifen or aromasin will help with the test converting to estrogen. Similarly you could try an androgen that doesn't convert. Since virilization is not an issue, you could take almost any of the non aromatizing derivatives. Anavar is not very androgenic but with sufficient quantity. Trenbolone is very androgenic but i'm not sure if there is any pharmaceutical companies currently making it.

  • @oliversmith5927

    OK, so having watched the whole video I have a few things to say.
    NOT completing gender therapy before getting a prescription for hormones is quite simply stupid.Yes, I know gender therapy is not great! But it is necessary that you go through it so you are informed on what's going on, as well as doctors needing to know that you are completely ready and fully informed of the changes.
    I'm seeing lots of people saying this in the comments already, but I'm going to say this again. You NEED to have a diagnosis of gender dysphoria (needs to be body dysphoria as well, not just social dysphoria) to medically transition. It's clear that Milo does not have this. This is likely why they have been on and off hormones, and changing doses all the time; because the changes testosterone is doing is giving them dysphoria! (I'm aware they mentioned changing dose once because of levels being too high). This comes back to needing to complete gender therapy, and needing to have gender dysphoria to go on hormones.
    If you do NOT have dysphoria please please don't take hormones. Let's say you're assigned female at birth, and claim to be a trans male, BUT are completely comfortable with a feminine body and have no dysphoria. If you then decide to take testosterone, surprise surprise your body will start to look more masculine!! And you'll end up with changes that are irreversible if you take testosterone for long enough (deepened voice, receeding hairline and without sounding too crude, changes in the lower region). I noticed Milo liked a comment about not needing dysphoria to be trans which sadly doesn't surprise me.

  • @BornOnThursday
    @BornOnThursday 5 років тому

    I haven't invested too much time into learning about transitioning other than surface level information, but have begun trying to learn more because it is becoming more prominent as more people speak up about it.
    I would think that as long as informed consent is available, then there is no problem. I've taken plenty of prescribed medicine and wasn't that interested in the risk because I figured the risks were unlikely to happen, but at least I knew that if I did have any symptoms, I could go back to my doctor. Taking testosterone appears to certainly have adverse side effects, but I don't know about someone using it to transition. If someone's body produces testosterone, you wouldn't want to take it unless necessary, but like Milo said, if your body is producing estrogen, then you may need a blocker to go along with your testosterone.
    I think the other societal concern is this, if you aren't properly diagnosed, and are upset or uncomfortable with the results, doctors take the risk of legal action. I would think something that potentially causes major changes in a person's body is something that should be fully understood by the individual engaging in the act of taking a hormone to transition.

    People in the comments saying that the gel is slower than shots. That's not really true, I needed to start on the gel before the doctors would allow me to switch to shots and my changes came as quickly as they possibly could (voice break after three weeks eg). You need to be on a dose that insures good testosterone levels, it doesn't matter in which form it comes.

    Hormones are NOT a joke and should not be taken lightly. In cis people alone hormone imbalance plays a HUGE part in over all health, not just physical characteristics. As someone who has imbalances I can tell you first hand that even natural hormone issues effect many aspects of my life from hair production to more serious issues like reproductive health ( and I DONT just mean ability to have children) and gut health. Gut health is my biggest pain. Bc if your gut is off, many other things are off bc of that one issue. Doctors need to be held responsible for being too relaxed on who gets hormones and why. Ik its touchy, bc no one wants to be told no in these situations when they are questioning their identity, but hormones effect over all body health and function that we as human beings need to live a health life. Do not make it sound like there are no health implications bc the body is not just physical presentation or mental identification.

    I have read some of the comments here, but they get kind of boring. Akin to a flavorless lollypop.
    So, there are many claims that you should not be able to get meds without consulting a doctor for a diagnosis and therapy. It seems that some doctors are willing to risk their license by going off what the patient says, informed consent. This is good enough for them, good enough for me. Many other illnesses work this way, got a cough, want codine? Fine then you are gonna need to see a specialist at least six times before they will give you that dangerous narcotic. Plus, self medication is a fine American tradition... Legal weed, alcohol, and OTC meds. My experience in and around healthcare and doctors is that risk of a med is relational to the hoops that you need to jump through to get it, UNLESS there is some other cultural reason, such as religion, for example, to make it have a stigma associated with it. And, I hear so many low T commercials on the radio, I can't buy that T is that precious. This sounds like straight up discrimination to me.
    I'm straight, cis, old, white, and male. So I'm not going to really have any basis to make judgement as a member of the LGBTQ community. I'm here to learn, and I feel that there is some negativity in the form of sour grapes here. I also see trolls and feel the presence of lurkers. What I am really getting is a sort of shallow, basic, ignorant lack of empathy from the negative comments. Hey, we all have problems. There are no people who can clame exclusive rights to mental illnesses. And, we all might benefit, or not from more diagnosis. But honestly, there is no good argument made from lack of empathy, or feeling that some other person didn't meet or exceed your own personal struggle.
    I say, stay alive, stay happy, work together, learn about new things, and don't be a dick to others.
