    Man, back in 2004 when I first heard about 3d printing, and got a little printed sample from some company selling FDM printers for like 25 grand, this was the first thing that came to my mind. Using it to print body panels, and then skinning them in carbonfiber. It's so awesome to see someone actually doing that!

    I missed seeing the Lambo since I couldn't make to this year's RMRRF, but awesome to see people sign it. And now... a McLaren. I'm just imagining neighbors driving around and there's just one how with a Lambo, McLaren, etc. sitting out front... glad you're thinking heat and structure through. I've tried to explain this to family and they look at me like "how is this street legal?"

    I noticed that the CAD program was briefly shown and saw that it is Solidworks. I hardly hear it mentioned when talking about 3D printing, but I will see it occasionally in videos like this. Would like to have it mentioned so it can be known as an option. Admittedly the professional version is a bit price prohibitive (expensive!) but there is a hobbyist version that is very affordable. CAD is subjective; use what works best for you, your team and your project. I only mention this because I have tried quite a few CAD programs and felt most comfortable in Solidworks, but definitely shop around and keep your options open.

    Due to the numbers of McLarens that end up like this, one can only assume that it's now the defacto platform for Mustang drivers to upgrade to after they win the lottery,
    Jokes aside, with the means and the skills, these are a great way to leverage laser scanning and obsessive printing regimes to makes dynamically restyled cars relatively cheaply. Definitely a viable route to getting into automotive design that could birth a future Pagani or Enzo. 👌
    Add: Not that you can't 3D print the majority of a car body and internal parts (obviously, it's why we're here), but another route in the same camp is to use carving foam on a CNC machine; some of the 30x40 machines can be had for midrange printer money these days and afford a very generous workpiece size. The real benefit is in using more sturdy materials that take to molding well with composites/tool gel when scaling to sizable panels, and with a clever operator, cheaper feedstock. Or as said, CNC foam blocks directly which you can use with compatible resins and leave in place as foam-core composites.

    • @PS_on_youtube
      @PS_on_youtube 2 місяці тому +1

      3D printing is great! But as you mention, CNC of any material (especially foam) is the way to go for this kind of work.

This is like when you see these videos of Russians fixed completely luxury cars with a bent frame, they recover the looks but the mechanical properties are long gone. I really hope he doesn't ever have an accident, because that won't be pretty.
    Not to mention the dynamic properties of the car, it will have asymetric stiffness and weight...
