I'm not a romantic, but those words he said about his wife upon her death...😢
It touched me too
He may have been very romantic to his wife but not to Indians............ During his tenure..... Partition of Bengal 1905-division based on Religion -Hindu-Muslim , Deporting Non-violent Indian nationalist to Mandalay jail in Myanmar (5*5*5ft cell), Any young student who opposed against his oppression was detained, no political association was allowed -Indian University act, Press act-no free press etc.......
Not so romantic was he?
@@Omkar_93 Man's inhumanity to man, includes all races.
The words spoken can be heartfelt or not. The upper classes were expected to speak eloquently , devotedly about their spouses. I am not trying to be cynical, just realistic. Anger, jealousy, unhappiness were emotions that were hidden and never displayed amongst the upper classes.
Watching this for the first time

Happy Memorial Day Everyone.
I love how you get more History here than on the History channel!
Acc0rd79 yesss!!! I insisted my father get a more expensive package so I could watch history channel only to be disappointed to find out that they mostly show something called duck dynasty which I first thought might be like a documentary on ducks but no..... and stupid storage wars
@@MyDiamond99 and Ancient Aliens!!! 😩
@@mamavelvet8787 in India they'll broadcast omg India the borest show ever.
I agree our History Channel sucks!!
is this like real life Lady Cora and Lord Grantham? Lord Grantham married her for the money but fell in love with her. I do miss watching Downton Abbey.
Lady Galadriel No, Lady Grantham was a fictionalized story of Pauline de Rothschild
Lady Galadriel I had the same thought, likely because the narration was by Elizabeth McGovern, who portrayed Lady Cora Crowley in Downton Abbey.
Lady Galadriel Yes you are correct! If you watch the whole show they explain downtown Abby to be inspired by this story!
Yes, a lot of these real life "princesses ", inspired Cora's story.
...wait til September, Lady Galadrielle...:)
A major famine coincided with Curzon's time as viceroy in which 1 to 4.5 million people died.Large parts of India were affected and millions died, and Curzon has been criticised for allegedly having done little to fight the famine.
Most of old money profited from colonisation
Can we play more Kazoo But we should still call it as it was...thinly-veiled white supremacy disguised as policy.
And she was an American millionairess. I don’t know how her family directly made their fortune but remember that slavery, the actual buying and selling of them, not just the work they did, created fortunes for individuals and the country.
You tell em girl, people gotta know that this gilded romance stood upon the graves of millions of colonial subjects.
@@omargoodnesssake Mary's father was made his money in 1850s Chicago in the dry goods business and later was one of the founders of the Marshall Fields department store in the 1860s. Oddly enough, although successful (he helped rebuild Chicago after the Great Fire) he and his family were not seen as "good" as those who came from East Coast old money.
I wish some man loved me like that
+Carolyn Nigro So do I
I agree with u myself i need a good man... but unlike u tho i dont want just "some man" i fucking want a handsome rich bad ass man that would love me all hardcore
Carolyn Nigro Love both you and ypur money? XD
Carolyn Nigro If you had a billion dollars in the bank like she did, I'm sure a billion men could.
It was both ways that made it a good marriage. Sad he lost his wife early.
that is the most beautiful tomb

Adrianne Spring I pass this tomb everyday. It’s on Staten Island, New York. It’s fascinating.
Have you heard of The Taj Mahal?
Wow she passed away at age 36. They had 3 daughters. Her husband remarried in 1917 to a wealthy American widow. Their marriage lasted 8 years after his death in 1925, they produced no children.
Wow. Either he liked being maintained or had a knack for attracting wealthy women 😒🤧
Siphokazi Lerato Malinga
well who was he going to marry? Eliza?
What a beautiful heartbreaking story, but it’s so refreshing to see that some of these forced marriages end up being happy ones❤️
So many married for title and money. Glad these two actually loved each other, though it came to a heartbreaking end. Nice to see love actually exists. Their tomb is beautiful.
evils of colonialism aside, what a sad, beautiful story.
Another person slagging British colonialism. What about other countries like Spanish or the French? Maybe you could look at the Portuguese and what they did to India before the British and the lasting impact on the Goans. No matter what country you come from there is some form of imperialism and colonial enterprise.
As an Indian somehow everything soured when I heard he was appointed the Viceroy of India. There was no magic for me in the story anymore
@@laughswhentickled I don't think she was targeting the British specifically. She said colonialism. Everybody who had a history class on coloinialism knows Great Britain wasn't the only one involved.
I think you are not reading history ! You can’t change it whatever we believe now 🇬🇧
@@laughswhentickled they’re all to blame. all disgusting, the person mentioned colonialism as a system so pls stop being offended
I completely understand the feelings of love he shared with his wife as, I too found that rare air of love which surrounded us both , transcending time and space.
Such sweet devotion in so few number of years. Lovely.
Such a beautiful love story. It almost made me cry.
Consuelo, Duchess of Marlborough ranked higher that Mary, Baroness Curzon of Kedleston by virtue of her husband's title of Duke. However, Mary, Lady Curzon of Kedleston held the office of Vicereine of India which therefore placed her higher than Her Grace The Duchess of Marlborough.
Jack O'Connor yes....who disputes that?
Jennie Jerome has to be a contender. She married the Duke of Marlborough, and was the mother of Winston Churchill. What is more, she was a stunner,
Adrian Larkins Actually Lord Randolph Churchill was the third son of the 7th Duke of Marlborough and never Duke
I stand corrected.
Adrian Larkins Jenny was the loveliest of the american money princesses....🤗👍🏻😉
By far.
Wrong Winston Churchill's father was not the Duke of Marlborough. His elder brother was the Duke.
Now I guess Megan Markel is the highest ranked American in UK.
She is!!!
Yes 😊❤️
First to be HRH 👸
She's more than a great beauty! She is pro woman, pro girl's education. She is charitable; has been since she was a little girl. She is well-educated, poised and SUCH a comfort and partner to her husband! And she doesn't mind rolling up her sleeves and getting to work. 💕💕💕💕💕💕😢💕💕💕
Is she still American?
The diaries of Henry ‘Chips’ Channon brought me, in a round about way, here.

I wish they would bring this show back. Such a great concept, not much is known about women in history.
Oh, this is the "Peacock dress" Lady Curzon.
Jennie Jerome did not marry the duke of Marlborough she married his brother, lord Randolf father of Winston.
The Downtown love story of Lady Cora and Lord Robert Grantham?... In the voice of Cora 😍
What a remarkable tomb. Their hands gently touch.
Amusing how times changed. Duchess Meghan is now the highest ranking American being actually part of the royal family.
I honestly admit, I do not like Megan Markle at all
Nope, she's an
It is nice, it's more than nice to hear, it's lovely to hear, about a happy couple, in love sustained over time, regardless of who they are.
It is heartbreaking to hear, as writing, about ill health and their time together stopped short.
Smithsonian Channel, please keep this content coming. The world needs a good understanding of history. More importantly, a better understanding of the people in history.
What a beautiful story of true love .I choked up at his love for her even in death .He wanted her with him still. A lovely surprising story. 💞💗💞
Elizabeth McGovern, who portrayed Lady Crawley in Downton Abbey narrartes.
i love this bring back american princess series please.
Dope! Let’s celebrate colonialism and the subjugation of a whole nation full of diverse people cause the chick was American! I wonder how Indian history depicts this American princess and her husband...
We loathe them, thanks.
You mean the parts where they became a democracy or something else.
On the other hand you have to admire what British rule did for India. Colonization happened everywhere back in the day. Learn some history and perhaps context.
@@carolinekaplan542 Killed and looted India? Should a thief and murderer be appreciated? What sick mind do you have?
@@carolinekaplan542 True! Oh the "burden of the White Man".
Money cannot buy the two more sought out possessions in the world, love or happiness. Money just buys stuff.
It can buy health and comfort too
Well it sorta can. If Mary were not an heiress running around in fancy circles it’s highly unlikely that the two would have met. Money is what gave the two the chance to meet and she was more appealing to him bc she was rich and could present herself adorned in nice clothes, make up etc.
It’s not those either. It’s Salvation!
@@maggiemae7539 Yes, but Salvation is not a worldly possession
What a beautiful and sad story.... i was touched by what he wrote of her.... their tomb is magnificent
romanticising some of the most dangerous colonials?
exactly my thought
@@jms855 go educate yourself about them instead of believing whatever you see on the internet
Dangerous colonials? Are you living in a city that evolved from the advantages of western democracy. If so, be quiet you hypocrite.
Are not most famous historic figures 'colonials' in some sense?
Elizabeth Blackwell So, living in a Western democracy precludes one from pointing out colonialism was wrong? Sounds like you’re the one who needs to shut up here. No matter what you apologists say, we will keep exposing the truth about your racist, colonialist, oppressive heroes.
I would love to see an epic film about this story.
We will never see another tomb that beautiful....... oh to be loved like that
What a sad story! :( Beautiful tribute to her!
Wow! The Curazon window creates an imperial eagle on the wall across from it. Awww. Poor George and Mary💔
What a beautiful love story ❤️❤️. Blessings 💕
"There has gone from me the truest, the most devoted, the most unselfish. the most beautiful and brilliant wife a man ever had"
Read The Curzen Sisters....the 3 daughters ...one marries Oswald Mosley when he is a conservative mp , another has an affair with Mosely but is married to Fruity Metcaff who is best man at Duke of Windsor and Wallace wedding, the eldest doesn't marry but has affairs with major political figures and inherits her fathers title and brings up Oswalds children when her sister dies. All three inherent their mothers wealth which the father, lord Curzen uses to prop up his massive overspending doing up their vast estates. The girls eventually stand up to him to have control of their American money and this causes a rift that never heals.
This needs to be a movie.
To be that rich and to be that in love so wonderful lives do exist we’re just not the ones living them god hear our prayers whatever they may be
Well... She did die young. It is a lovely story but her life was tragically short.
How and where can we watch the whole episode?
If you find out, please let me know!
Hi +amapola53 and +Lexi Grimbrooke, the whole documentation is on the description of this video which also has a link for it.
Wonderful to hear Lord and Lady Grantham as narrators.
...in 1898 he is made Viceroy of India, and together they rule over 300 million people (boggles the mind that it took thousands of years to get to 300 million people, and only 100 years later, there are over 1.4 billion people in India! it seems to be some sort of a race for global domination, with China leading with a population of 1.5 billion people.)
I hope I love someone who loves me like that some day.
Yes and no. Lady Cora was based on her but Jennie Jerome, mother of Sir Winston. Churchill, was married to a Marlborough year as as she pretty much performed the same service-supplying the resources for the upkeep of Blenheim Castle. Lady Cora did the 8same for Downton Abbey.
Wow you can see the likeness between her and princess Diana ❤️
I need a full length film. Too short 😥
Lord Curzon..that reviled man who partitioned Bengal
I cried after watching this because it's such a beautiful story
Their eldest daughter married Sir Oswald Mosley and became MP for Stoke on Trent.
And here all along I thought #1 was Cora Crawley, Countess of Grantham…🤷♀️😂
Yes, Lady Galadriel, and much like this couple, Lord Grantham (we learn in Episode 1, Season 1 from Cora) fell in love with her sometime during their first year of marriage. I wonder, too, if that storyline might have been inspired by George Curzon and Mary Leiter.
I would love to watch a movie about this amazing story
Wow nice story
I wish they would make this into a movie.
Gosh that was short and sweet🍬.
I’m so glad they’re history museums...
What a pleasant story of real life - sad that they had little time to live their dream.
We so need to hear positive truths, our Country is quite adolescent ego minded and negative.
The only way to achieve and maintain the positive, is with Conscious, Mature Mindedness and believing the dreams will/are obtainable.
Help this country through the efforts of promoting truths, facts, and positive hopes.
Aren't you being a bit negative, yourself?

Her daughter married Sit Oswald Mosley and she became first female MAP for Stoke on Trent.
was this narrated by cora from downton abbey
Beautiful tomb at the end.
Yes... you never live in peace and happiness when u become part of colonization and exploitation which comes with it.... i feel sad for their love and marriage but no sympathy for these heartless Raj which looted and killed millions on Indian soil.... shame...
Smithsonian, your headline reduced her to a thing. An object of beauty. Shame on you.
this is similar to cora and lord grantham, and the narrator sounds like cora’s actress 😂
It is Elizabeth McGovern. (Lady Grantham)
That's because it is
true love lives for ever
When will you ever finish these videos???
Yey what a lovely couple and successful colonists?
A true happily ever after 😢
Never heard of her !
Vicereen. I like it!
Is that Cora??
I guess the highest ranking must be Meghan Markle now?
at 0:40 behind her there is a face of a man...like a side profile. could be the carving of the stone of the stairs but it looks a bit off. let me know if you see it.
I believe the title has now been superseded by Megan Merkle
so it's like downton abbey where cora is married off for her money and lord granthom has a title but they fall in love.
You forgot to told us about how many children they have? It’s interesting for me
where can i watch this series in the uk??
Is this narrated by the lady who plays the mother in Downton Abbey?
Well what about the story of Taj Mahal?
What a devoted husband :)
If that isn’t goals I don’t know what is
I’ve heard this story very sad ending but beautiful nonetheless
The man in the thumbnail looks like Prince William
What a pretty story
Curzon was later British Foreign Secretary during World War I.
(I was wondering what they called a viceroy's wife...)
Now it's going to be Meghan Markle
Wow that was a bummer.
True love 💗
After killing millions, he feel devastated only after his wife died.
Mmm this title needs to be updated.
The narrator sounds like Cora from downton abbey
If you agree give this a like😊
I have zero sympathy for him after looking at the pictures of the dead tigers on his Wikipedia page.
Prince Daiana was the most beatiful but she GONE too young
Now one of her daughter in-law have her beauty i haven't seen but i saw her beauty in magazine she's light of kingdom after Daiana 🌞i don't know how many kids she has
Do you mean Kate or meghan?
She apparently died after undergoing numerous fertility surgeries and miscarriages unable to produce the male heir Curzon wanted. After visiting the Taj Mahal she said she would die peacefully if someone constructed something like that for her. So he did this.
British are different. Marriage is a business contract. Romance is rare.
Is this the voice of Elizabeth McGovern?
Really classy ladies
How many people have noticed the narrator's voice is manufactured? Listen carefully...
It's not manufactured. That's how Elizabeth McGovern speaks. Haven't you watched Downton Abbey?
Oh wow, I stand corrected.
Its all good dude i stop watching that shitty show 2nd season... How tf would we know whos voice it is lol
