  • By now you've probably heard about many of the things that make this camera great. But its magic is much more than the A7Sii's ISO power or the A9's focus system. We dive into the details about why this camera is one of Sony's biggest releases. *All prices mentioned in video are in Canadian Dollars*

    so what was the feature that (almost) no one is talking about?

    • @vistek
      @vistek  6 років тому +39

      Hey Philip, honest question. I felt as though every review talked extensively about the ISO and Focus (which I admittingly also talked about, because how could you not), but didn't talk at all about design, or about the things that still weren't great. Yes, the design is identical to that of the A7R3, but if that camera didn't interest the viewer, then this would be their first experience with the re-design. So, my pitch was "at this price point" here are the things that matter most to me - and that most people seem to be glossing over or not addressing at all. - D

    Great video! I love the fact that you did address the build aspects. One of the things I discovered while going about and trying out some of the a7 series in store, was that the a7rii compared to the a7 has a better grip (a7iii has continued that too which is good). I still shoot on my a65 from 2012 and I love the solid grip that it provides, and it is not something I would want to sacrifice in upgrading to a mirrorless camera (for the price at least).

    No recording limit after patch - I used it on three different ones, works like a charm.
    it is actually just an app (just like "sony remote") to be installed (and, at choice, deleted) on the cam.
    The patch is called "Open Memories Tweak"

    I have the a9 and to be honest I'm happy with the touch screen as is. On my product shooting camera it has full touch and I accidentally change camera setting all the time and it isn't awesome. Even when the camera is in my bag, if it gets bumped and wakes up then the bag starts changing the camera setting as I'm walking or running around. Know what I mean? So I'm totally cool with the lack of touch options on my s9

    Stellar camera. I upgraded from an a7R to the a7iii and im really pleased. Adapting canon glass with my metabonez mk4 t is a dream (i hear its even better with the sigma mc-11). Focus is now so much more intelligent.
    One thing I wish I could do is set mode / settings defaults for video and photo separately (Picture Profile settings and focus mode in particular). I shoot both photos and video from photo mode, and have issues with the focus mode from time to time. Iʻd also like it if pressing the record button could pop a picture profile on just for the shooting of that clip, and return to default for taking photos.

    Fighting so hard with this decision, but still leaning towards the A9 because I shoot wildlife mostly. It seems the buffer and fast fps will be a huge factor with the power of the stacked sensor. BUT the feature set of this A7III for the price point is ridiculously fantastic. I played with both the A7III and A9 at a local camera store. The no blackout feature of the A9 along with the crazy fast fps provided a different shooting experience. Honestly though, both are fantastic cameras.

    • @MyMomSaysImSmart
      @MyMomSaysImSmart 6 років тому +1

      keeblerhunts Focus system in the a9 polls the sensor 60 times per second. The a7iii 20 times per second. If you’re tracking fast action, the focus systems are Not the same. They just have the same focus Sensors and processor.

    The 30 minute record thing is to do with a rule in the EU (and possibly) other countries where going over that would class it as a camcorder. That would add, as you rightly point out, taxes etc on the camera. The EU rule I believe expires next year and may not be renewed so potentially the 30 minute thing might come to and end soon. I really hope so.

      @aaron-bieber 5 років тому

      Pretty sure that is also a rule in the US, and I don't know how much the tax is, but I'm not sure if I would want to pay significantly more for this camera so that it could record more than 30 minutes of video if I meant to use it for, you know, taking pictures, which used to be the primary purpose of all cameras but these days who knows.

    Very perceptive review. One thing to bear in mind is that high ISO tests in good light are not a true test of how the camera will behave in lower light. It looks to me like you did test lower light but I'm not sure. Also my Nikon D750 24mp is also pretty clean at ISO 6400 so it sounds like Sony is playing catch-up there. Ultimately though this review pointed out some things I had not noticed as I consider adding Sony FF to my system. Thanks for doing this!

      Hi Jake - thank you for subscribing and the great comment. I might leave it to community to answer your question, but a 24-105 ( i think that's the range) f4 is a good all arounder when you consider how good the low light on the camera is (so you can afford the 1 stop loss over the 2.8 lenses). The 29:59 Limit is not because they want to sell their video cameras. Its because a video camera in Europe costs import tax and a photo camera doesn't. The spec they decide if it is a video camera or not is if it can record 30 min of video in one.

    • @Tempest261
      @Tempest261 6 років тому

      Doesn't Canon just close the file and automatically open a new one (without dropping a frame)? That's my understanding at least. Seems like a viable workaround- why can't Sony do the same thing?

    • @mattdebyl8806
      @mattdebyl8806 6 років тому

      Canon do that for spanning files exceeding 4GB, not for exceeding 30mins. One is a limit on file sizes using FAT32, the other has to do with EU import tariffs. PS Sony do spanning files, but for anything using XAVC-S they insist on using ExFAT cards which don't have a 4GB file limit (and therefore don't have to span).

    Dale, this is one of the best assessments I've seen of the A7III to date. I've watched a lot of the Vistek teams videos and I really like the Vistek teams' down-to-earth, practical, transparent, honest, and accurate reviews. I get so tired of Manufacturer-spiff/affiliate-link incentive driven, fan-boy UA-cam videos that just recite the spec sheet back to me that I could scream. I've got some questions for you to consider when you get one for real to test longer term: 1) how is the weather resistance on the A7III? Both Imaging Resource and Roger Cicala at LensRentals have demonstrated, to put it mildly, that the weather resistance of the A7RIII leaves *a lot to be desired*, and that bottom plate of the A7RIII has no weather sealing at all, so if you carry your camera around in the rain on a Black Rapid strap with the bottom plate exposed, you're going to be in a lot of trouble. Also, and this is likely more relevant to stills photography than video, but do you know if Sony has strengthened/stiffended the frame to be able to accomodate long, HEAVY, fast telephoto primes like the forthcoming Sony G Master 400 f/2.8? I've seen virtually nothing about this point, and I have considerable concerns that the lens mount is stiff and strong enough to support a torsional load like this. The reason Fuji made the body on the X-H1 larger and considerably thicker, stronger and stiffer, especially around the lens mount area, was to be able to securely and safely mount long, heavy fast telephoto primes, like their to-be released 200mm f/2.0. They even published an engineering white paper about it. I've seen nothing along these lines from Sony.

    • @vistek
      @vistek  6 років тому

      Hey Stephen! Thanks for your comments! I'd love to be able to test cameras longer, and do weather sealed tests, but I'll likely never be given that opportunity. At least in the same way that that LPTG can do. But, I'm always dubious of mirrorless manufacturers who claim their products are fully weather sealed. You get what you pay for and there also seems to be a lot of parts, which make me suspicious of how well all off that can be sealed. As for the lenses - I have no additional knowledge to share beyond what you already know. I'm often kept in the dark like everyone else, until something lands on my desk (like the A73) and the company is like "here - review this. You have 24 hours." That said, I don't really demand robust mounts for still lenses. This is generally only an issue with big cine lenses, which is why Sony developed the locking E-Mount on their FS7 Mk2. For everything else, it's just assumed you lock the tripod to your lens, not the camera - and the camera's are so light it literally makes zero difference. Thoughts?

    • @stephenscharf6293
      @stephenscharf6293 6 років тому

      Hi Dale, thanks for your reply. To be clear, none of the manufacturers claim that their cameras are weather-sealed, they claim they are "weather-resistant." For example, Canon specifies that their pro 1D-series bodies will withstand a Class 7 rainstorm. The question is a practically significant one rather than a "statistically significant" one: Sony claims the camera is "weather resistant" but suffered significant ingress of water in the Imaging Resource tests. The Olympus OM-D E-M1II by contrast, did not. Also, Roger Cicala has a teardown article on the Sony A7RIII that demonstrates no weather-resistance seals on the bottom deck, hence his concerns. Regarding stiffening of camera frames, I am thinking more of use scenarios for stils sports/racing photojournalism (I do pro motorsports photojournalism, to provide you with some context), where very long, heavy fast prime telephotos need to be mounted safely and securely, in addition to the mounting maintaining the requisite very small optical tolerances. Fuji addressed this specifically by re-engineering the X-H1's frame to be 2X as strong and significantly stiffer (with respect to tension loads) than the X-T2's so as to be able to mount a lens e.g. their forthcoming 200mm f/2.0, which will be long and heavy, along the lines of a Canon 300/2.8. They described the engineering they did to meet these requirements by publishing an engineeirng white paper on the subject. To date, I've seen virtually nothing similar about this from Sony. The A7III body looks to be exactly the same with respect to strength/stiffness as the A7II body. Bottom line: I just don't trust Sony; they have an established track record of cameras and lenses that have significant failure modes from not thinking things through thoroughly and rushing products to market.

    does anyone know much about the technical durability of mirrorless cameras like the a7iii with respect to heavy usage and take many thousands of individual photos in a single day? I often need to shoot tens of thousands of photos in a day.... i get by with it rotating 2 DSLRs and know i can replace my shutter every 200,000 or so.... but how would mirrorless cameras like the a7iii deal with this?

    From my understanding Sony didn't add a joystick bc other cameras had them, rather they added it bc their consumers wanted it. Sony is great at listening to their consumers and adjusting their products to meet their needs, which is another reason people are switching from canon and Nikon. Also the same consumers want dials and buttons to be able to adjust setting on the fly without having to look at the screen or go through menu option settings each time. Would setting adjustments via gestures have been a nice add-on? Meh maybe? But definitely not in replacement of physical dials. Car companies learned this lesson as consumers at first thought full touch screens were a cool idea bc they were the latest and greatest thing. However, in reality people hated having certain dials and buttons eliminated bc they could no longer reach, feel, and adjust, they had to look (take eyes of road), focus (on the screen not the road), and adjust. I personally like my high end camera to feel like a camera not a point and shoot. Opinions?

    • @Blockbuster2033

      Sea Panther well, I kinda agree with everyone here. Personally I can live without a touchscreen, however the menu system is something that I can't imagine how it can be so hard to just reorganise. I'd even be fine with the old menu system that we had from the a7 and a6000 till the a7rii, if they'd just reorganised the functions and grouped for example focus setting together. The next big complaint I have is also the hdmi port, they should at least put a mini-hdmi port, instead of that micro-hdmi port, I've already killed about five or so hdmi cables on that stupid port. And then there are the buttons. I used a friend's canon 1dsiii a while back for an event shooting and after switching back to the a7 series those sony cameras felt like 20$ toys. The buttons are mushy, the dials don't really click. Now I wanted to get started on the video features, but then I realized, that there are cameras like the fs5 and fs7 :D. However, I think sony could blow all of their competition out of the universe, if they'd release the fs5 with a dci 4k full frame size bsi sensor and ibis and good autofocus (the one from the a7rii or so), even while keeping everything else the same (codec, body, etc.). And I'm fairly confident they could do it for less than 10k$, although they wouldn't, because pro-video-cam-market haha.
      Cheers

      The best one you can afford? I wouldn't put too much thought in it. A compact zoom would probably be a great start. Get something wide for landscapes and into the medium range. So 24-70 is always a classic focal length. Good luck!

    what makes micro hdmi inferior? In my limited experience, the connector is really flimsy, but I'm interested if it's technically and feauture inhibited/limited compared to the full size connector (i.e high frame rates, etc)

    • @vistek
      @vistek  6 років тому +1

      It is quite possibly the worst connector ever invented. I could give you a list that's a mile long. Not the least of which is just trying to plug it in. I come from using cinema & broadcast cameras that use SDI & Full HDMI connectors. These are robust, as well as quick to insert & remove. On set, time is money. The more time you futz with stuff, and break stuff, the more money it costs you. Micro HDMIs have done nothing but cost me time and money. I'm passionate about my hate for them. Hi Nandos, yes that's correct. For Slog3 to work at its best DR and noise reduction, Sony fixes the gain at 800iso. As with all mirrorless cameras, you will continue to need ND filters - which are great to have in your kit regardless (IMHO). - D

    What a great review for the Sony a7III. The best improvement is the focus point toggle. The wheel changed settings if you hit it wrong causing some very important missed shots. Alas, I will not be getting this camera because of the "not" improved lcd screen. My Nikon has the same type (fold up or down). My Oly has the very versatile swing out lcd which I find so handy when shooting in portrait mode. And as far as the touch screen goes, I never use it. I prefer my more accurate dials.

      Hello Valters. Thanks for the comment. I can tell you I had the camera for 48 hours and no more - where as many other vloggers had it for up to 3 weeks. Sony never asked that I tailor my review. No camera manufacturer in recent memory has asked me to "say something nice." What you are getting is my honest opinion after 48 hours with the camera.
