I just did a replacement on an old axe i found left in my barn. I purchased a 20 dollar hickory handle from tractor supply. I first put my head in to see where it would bind up. Gave the head a few wacks with a mini sledge, then took it off to see where the head was hitting. Then used my little old hatchet to widdle down the end to get it to fit properly. Then got it nice and flush, put it both metal wedges and wacked the shim down to width with my hatched. Then went to down slamming through some red oak to put in my wood stove tonight.
Thanks , simple no BS , to the point video . I’ve got an axe head from the 70’s that I didn’t want to throw out just cuz the handle broke. I’m sure the steel is superior to what I would purchase today . Ordered a beautiful hickory replacement , it’s not easy finding the right handle that fits the hole in axe head .
@robertstephenson9839 you are welcome! Yes it is getting harder to find good handles these days. I have more videos like this coming so if you enjoy it stick around! Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! Glad I could help you out!
I didn't get a wooden wedge with my replacement handle, I'll try and make one from some beech I have but does it matter? Could I use pine? I don't have a vice either. But I'm sure I can get around that.x
@annanomaly4117 You can make your own or check your local hardware store. Sometimes they sell just the wooden wedges. You could make one the harder the wood the better if you do that though. The vise you can kind of get around but it does come in handy. Thank you for leaving a comment and I hope this is helpful! Thanks for watching!
@michaeldunivan5364 You're welcome glad it was helpful! I have gotten the volume fixed on the newer videos. I tend to pick a favorite phrase and not stop saying it during videos lol. Thank you for watching and leaving a comment! Really appreciate the support!
