    I picked up my x27 2 years ago and absolutely love it. I haven't had any issues with it other than the handle not being rigid enough when you're trying to pry the wood apart after splitting it the handle bends versus pushing the wood apart. But fantastic axe (as a novice).

      I agree. I’m 2 years with my x27 and it’s some of the best money I’ve ever spent. Easy to swing, and splits chords of everything I’ve thrown at it. I also love that it’s not an heirloom and with a lifetime warranty, I can be agressive with it and get the work done quickly.

    As firefighter I was extremely lucky to get one of the very first fire mauls that Mitch, from Chicago Fire (not the show, the actual Chicago Fire) along with his halligan and forget about the fact that you turn this around and good night sweet deadbolt, or marry it to a halligan doubling the force you put on a steel outward swinging commercial door……where it blew me away was how easily you can open up a roof if your saw sh*ts the bed or gets gummed up. The big shoulders prevent it from getting buried and stuck and I’ve been beating the absolute piss out of mine for almost 3 years and it’s an absolute unit!

    Hey @ThorenBradley, so the Gransfors Bruk splitting maul doesn't have a 7lb head. The overall weight of the axe is 7lb but it has a 5.5 lb head!

    • @morilot
      @morilot 2 місяці тому +1

      Actually 5.2 lb if I'm not mistaken. Gränsfors Bruk don't tell you the weight of the axe head but the entire axe weighs 3.2kg and in their spare parts page they list the handle + handle guard assembly at 0.84 kg. So the axe head should be the difference between these which is 2.36kg or 5.2lb.
      All Gränsfors Bruks products are handmade so it wouldn't be impossible to get a bigger axehead on a custom shaft. It would probably be excessively expensive but possible.

    Glad to see you finally tried the Granfors Bruks axe/splitting mauls. Looking from a quality and form/function perspective. I've found them to absolutely be the best axes on the market. Now with that said they were designed mostly for European arborist and carpentry work. But they do have some models that are more geared towards the woods found in North America.
    The fiskars is hands down the best lower cost splitting maul with a great design for the lower weight. Great for not wearing out someone with a smaller frame while still allowing for a great splitting maul for the size.

  • @y_m6864
    @y_m6864 4 дні тому

    To break the handle of a fiskars axe, you need to clamp it in a vice and bend it many times with great force. In the video about the fiskars axe crash test, a 100 kg man spent a lot of time on this. After the handle was broken with great difficulty, the man simply glued everything back and calmly continued using the axe.

    I've had my Fiskars as my only splitting axe for over 10 years going through 3 cords of rounds/yr. I don't know where you got the idea that it doesn't last that long. If there's weakness is the soft steel which requires more frequent sharpening. Hit it with few strokes of good file and good to go. Btw, I'm 75 and log, buck, haul and split my firewood all winter.

    ive been splitting wood since by hand since i was about 12 years old and have been using a no named maul that i think is around 8 pounds thats probly older then my dad that ive put probly 10 new handles on or more over the years. i started wrapping paracord around the the handle about 6 inches under the head and that has helped alot with overstrikes. i also have a axe that i got off ebay 2 seasons ago that i think is a snow and nealy that is close to 4 pounds but has a crazy wedge profile that i really like because i can swing it for way long without getting winded. since i got that i only really pick up the maul for hard splitting woods. and no hate when i say this i love your videos but im not sure if using oak to show how hard somthing is a good test IMO. any of the oak where i live its one of the easier splitting woods there is especially if it doesnt have any knots. u can breath on it and it will split damn near. now elm thats a different story. a 10 inch round straight piece of elm thats not even 10 inches tall with no knots will take me a few hits with a maul to get it to split its kind of insane. it splits alittle better when its frozen ive noticed but its still a nightmare to handsplit.

      @@Ronimi-p4c I’m sorry for not being more specific. This was right before Biden took office and inflation went crazy. It’s a great axe worth every penny of even 57 dollars

    Hoping they make that fire maul in 10lbs, that would be PERFECT for my uses. All of a sudden we have a metric sh**load of wood drying to be split in the summer.

    Great video, if you dont mind i have a question.... I have a small farm that is 80% wooded... I do not own an axe but have been wanting to buy one and not sure which direction to go..... After looking at different axes i usually end up more confused than anything. You seem like you know your stuff very well. I have no need to split wood, just looking for a decent and inexpensive "general purpose" axe, if there is such a thing this day in time. What type/brand etc. would you recommend Any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks in advance

    That axe will last you a lifetime if you take care of it. They last much longer than most wooden handle axes. Ive used them for 6 years and still solid.

    Mr Bradley, I have a question!
    How did you get the 7lb head Granfurs bruk splitting maul. I have the same brand and name splitting maul but it's only 5.5 lbs head.

    How did you come to the conclusion that the fiskars wont last? How many did you break so far and how? Honestly asking you beast.

    • @ThorenBradley

      Because although the composite will likely outlast a wood handle….that’s the only one you get. So law of averages. The head on the gransfors for example, may be here on earth in useable form long after I am 😂🫡

    Reverb = shock tendinitis. 👎👎👎 the X27; splits great, excellent head speed; but it will wreck your forearms with extended use. The GB with a 36 inch handle would be 😍😍😍.

    Fiskars has to be light because everyone from 10 to 80 years old use it in Finland. Not even joke.

  • @alanrawson-wg8io

    This is going to sound nitpicky but a maul is not an axe. 2 of these are mauls and the Fiskars is a splitting axe. I was taught woodcraft by a man who grew up in the time when an axe was actually made and used for cutting. Pole axes are similar to the fiskars and were used for limbing the fallen trees and tapping wooden wedges into the saw kerf to prevent pinching the crosscut saw. Splitting , other than for kindling was done with splitting mauls.

    Have you attempted anything with Stihl Axes? I'm surprised I haven't seen them in the videos given they are well known in the lumberjack competitions. I'm particularly curious of the Stihl AXP series.
