The new War Thunder update added the Type 81(C) SPAA to the Japanese tech tree. I wasn't expecting much from it, but it actually eats aircraft for breakfast.

Hey spookston I just realized something the is6 got a br change to 7.7 in realistic battle I tried it out it seems very much balanced, I was wonder can you play it and get 8 kills with it?
2 tips with this thing:
1. Use Infrared guidance at close-medium ranges, it still ignores flares most of the time but can guide itself regarding height/background
2. Optical guidance ignores flares but ONLY works if there’s nothing at the background, meaning you cannot launch it upwards at the low altitude targets cuz it will launch up and will be facing the ground, not seeing a target.
I was actually told by a war thunder moderator that it’s much less resistant to flares than regular IR tracking

However, apparently, and I have experienced it from flaring them even in a heli, if you drop flares in certain manners, the missile will be confused, but not because it goes for the flares, but because the flares optically prevent the missile from seeing the aircraft. And considering the IRCCM of the IR mods of these missiles is very good, the optical system actually ends up a bit easier to « flare » than the IR mode

There was no way for you to know whether the missile was in optical or IR mode.

Definitely not. You even said that the only way to flare the optical guidance is by complete obscuration (i.e. the flares completely cover the aircraft). But you can flare the IR modes without complete obscuration, which objectively makes it easier. The IR mode of the Type 91 and Type 81 both use the same IRCCM methods of seeker shut off on top of FOV gating. So it's like a mix of an AIM-9M and an R-73. Very good IRCCM but it *can* be fooled, and *without* complete obscuration.
When you get to the Strela... there's just no way that what you said is true. Especially at range. It *only* has FOV gating, with no seeker shutoff, like an R-73. The optical tracking will be more flare resistance 100% of the time, especially headon.
@@collander7766 actually, I specifically mentioned being in an heli, because I know for a fact that they won’t be able to lock me with the IR mode when I seat above 3km from them , as shown in this video where he was unable to lock that heli with optical mode due to the mountains, and still did not lock the heli at almost 2km front and side aspect. Also, I did not say that complete obturation was necessary. I said that under specific conditions, that I still don’t understand yet (I mostly flare, turn towards the ground sideways), I seem to be able to flare them (mainly Strelas in a tiger HAP), as I managed to survive a few times (more an exception than the rule though).
As for the resistance to « flaring » (I don’t know if it should still be called that way) being lower than IR, this is what I was told when asking about Optical tracking on the forums, and then got the answer from a moderator that apparently knows more than me about the system implementation in game, who specifically told me that optical tracking was worse at dealing with flares than IR. I don’t have any hard evidence on this, but I tend to trust that mod as he is a very active and helpful mod in the forums in general

"It's no way it's that big at that distance" The game has a mechanic where it makes aircraft (including drones) bigger in unzoomed 3rd person from large distances. Then if you zoom in they get a bit smaller depending on the distance.
The recon micro's are looking like Arsenal Birds on my graphics mode..
It’s actually useful from long distances, I just scan the sky in 3rd person, then when I see something, line it up, and shoot
in IL2:BoS its very exaggerated and a pe3 from 15km away is the size of a country its kinda funny

You know, we complain a lot about stuff in War Thunder but they've added some nice stuff (I LOVE being able to detonate bombs/rockets in/on aircraft) and the silver lion/research point changes were really great.

That's just Gaijin conditioning you and getting you hooked, by adding all this I suspect they will add fuel and a advanced maintenance mechanic, now you need to refuel every match, change sparkplugs or injectors at every match, even if you were untouched

You should play the 3.3 T-34 "40. 20hp/t, 21°+ turret traverse, good hull armor, and an APHE with 150g TNT. The pen is terrible so its best played by running around, never stopping, and kicking people in the side from unpredictable angles. Highly underrated and underapreciated gremlin tank.

Pen everything at 4.7 and a solid chance at most things 5.7

T-34 as Medium, YaG-10 as TD, ZiS-12 as SPAA, IL-2M as strike (or IL-2 (1942)), Yak-9B or La-5F for fighter
Maybe you run more than 5 crew slots, in which case it probably is quite incomplete.

Clearly you should play the Charioteer Mk VII (British, also found in the Swedish tech tree via Finland); it has all of your favourite features including no armour, poor reverse speed, bad gun elevation and depression, and your choice of either APCBC or APDS ammunition.

After this update me and my friend start playing Type 81 with FlaRakRad first spawn, I have radar to spot aircraft and better range, my friend have fire & forget and far better pull
Which is super fun, highly recommend everyone give it a try
And I feel like it improved our win rate quite a bit, I think because when we play together we almost always play against Russia+US, which in top tier have a huge part of their strength in CAS, so if we can disrupt that it could improve our chances

with the drone it was the optical system at work against the sky while the heli in front of the mountain wasn't allowing the optical system to function

75mm 5KG HEAT rounds, 3.5s reload, 33mph, impenetrable by 50cal, never gets ammo racked.

I like how the JP tree goes from one of the worst AA in the game [Type 93] to my new favorite and arguably best [Type 81C]

The Type 91 missile on the type 93 was designed with better sensing equipment in 3rd generation infrared and ultraviolet tracking. So it should perform markedly better than early stingers. But considering it only moves mach 1.9 and the Type 81's missiles move mach 2.9 I have always been impressed how slow it feels which just adds to the wildly crap tracking it has for some reason.

The fact that an enemy can steal your kill is just another testament to how little thought the devs put into anything being fair in this game.
About the optical tracking, from my experience and a war thunder moderator :
-yeah, you could not detect that helicopter because of the mountain. Basically, optical tracking does not work for vehicles near the ground and with a background behind
-turns out, optical tracking actually goes more for flare than IR tracking for all the SAMs that have it. Apparently, it’s because the optical tracking is looking for the plane, but the flare creates to much disturbances for some reason I don’t really understand, so the missile lose the lock of the plane. It does not actually go for the flare either, it will just continue on its inertial navigation system, meaning that the plane still needs to evade.
-basic rule of thumb : go for optical on helis at above 2.5km. Go with IR in any other situation

I know this sounds off topic but I promise it relates to the video. I used to do land surveying and we had a tool called a total station. Basically imagine a camera laser pointer thingy on a big gimbal mounted to a tripod. It would automatically track a prism we had attached to a pole that we carried around. If we went behind a tree, it would continue moving the camera in the last direction we were walking, so when we came back out from behind the tree it would automatically be pointing around where the prism was which allowed it to reacquire the prism more easily. That’s probably how the optical system was able to track that plane through a building.

The real reward for anti-air is farming CAS tears in chat and on the forums, not RP/SL.
3:00 No, that's just somewhat similar to inertial guidance. After losing track it just assumes the target moves at the same speed and in the same direction for a few seconds. That's why when he came out from behind the silo you were still "tracking" but the reticle was in a completely different place (since he pulled up while behind the silo but the tracking assumed he didn't)
there are other problems with the Type 93, but one reason it misses more often than the Type 81 is the difference in the proxy fuze trigger radius (1m versus 7m), near misses become hits.
this is 100% my favorite times in playing war thunder, ill just dedicate a day or two to AA. spawn nothin else just AA from start of matches. those are always very fun and therapeutic matches

Spookston mentioning the old NBA Geico commercial like its some rare piece of media while its occupied my head rent free for years.
I got to 8.3 in France somewhat recently, and I am really enjoying the AMX-30 DCA. Its aim assist often allows me to shoot down jets and helis before they even get to the battlefield. Often times I take it out as my first spawn just so I can make the life of CAS players miserable like they've done to me for so long. Especially those who pick a heli as their first spawn just so they can fly around the map and go spawn camp.
DCA can even kill tanks too so that is nice

I got some sucess with the Type 93 in Optical ... 3 Missiles and got 3 Kills, finally locking Helis before they literally crash into you is satisfying and no Missile ever cared for Flares in Optical Mode

In a certain war happening right now the SPAA operators are very serious about downing drones, to the point of calling themselves "aces" if they downed more than 5. So drone kills are serious biz.
