because youre using APHE, once it makes its way through 19mm of whatever on average, itll detonate, destroying the shell, unless you use solid shot youre not making it through there
The very first tech tree I went down when I got this game was the British. I raged so hard at the rounds at times when solid shot wouldn't actually kill anything. Then I tried the French and realized the British weren't so bad. : ^] Great vid as always, Spookston.
The French early tier is absolutely miserable. Then you get to 4.0 and ironically you Play American tanks for a brief moment. Then the tree goes uphill as they start using HEAT and aphe. The 2.7 2C (Not the Bis.) Is a sleeper.

We ended up entertaining ourselves on the grind (because of course I forced my friends to play with me too. Suffer together, amirite?) by naming the shells “leftover baguettes”. The Bis variant was such fun to play with it came out, and I wish more of their tanks were like that and the B1 for early tiers.

However, they didn't really have a presence in the early days of WW2 and it shows in the tech tree. Even the lend-lease vehicles they have (looking at you Sherman) seem to have their survivability be next to nothing. I was trying to explain to a friend the other day that the French play fast, hard, and scared until you get to the rapid-death mode of their tree. The only exception being their early 'duck' tanks. lol
Funny enough, in actual combat maneuvers , it was found that it could keep up with most other tanks of it's time. What it lacked in top speed, it made up for in gearing, and it would normally clear courses in the same timeframe as other tanks.

Maybe try the American T34 Heavy? I know you've played the T29 but personally I have a better experience with the T34 due to the slightly lower BR and better penetration. Solid shot is solid shot but in my experience it does a lot of damage *most* of the time. Edit: Fixed a humorous typo Edit 2: Aw, guessed it removed the heart I got.

I've found that 100mm and up solid shot does pretty damn good damage. Anything within the general path through the tank will get destroyed. It's not as good as APHE but it will still one shot most things unless you hit the very edge of turrets or very low under the crew from the side
@@adamg7984the real problem is tanks are ridiculously survivable in War Thunder. 2 guys aren't going to keep fighting with the rest of the crew splattered around the tank. And you can't repair a busted engine in 30 seconds in real life. So solid shot, APDS and HEAT are much less effective because a hit that would kill a vehicle in real life is only a minor inconvenience in game.

Both APHE and the AP shells do around the same damage. Now the obvious damage difference being the filler in larger shells. The man is right though, the explosion just doesn't have any momentum when it enters a tank. It just detonates and throws shrapnel everywhere. Where most of the shrapnel would keep it's momentum.
Spookston uploads are always right in the middle of my history class and I love it. A great source of entertainment to offset something so boring. (I love war and tank history, I just don't really care for British trade routes or whatever.)
History is great. It just need a good enthusiastic teacher, it is a feast of famine subject, it can be like info dump after info dump, but if you have a good teacher that wont be the case making boring info palatable
sad that the system has failed you so horribly history is the study of what makes a person and their culture, it's incredibly meaningful and rich when taught well
I have a recommendation if you haven't played it yet the turan 1 whenever ive used people seem to kill my machine gunner thinking its my driver and its really good at deflecting shots (dont know if its luck or not) and it has amazing reverse and foward speed (i think about 24kmh reverse fully uograded) and its all at 2.3 overall very fun tank to play
i love how you can see the difference of how gaijin and CAS has affected this man from watching the first ever specific tank gameplay until now War thunder done drained his braincells (too much hstvl in mind)
The "Random Pillar" is a "Litfasssäule" (Advertising Column). Invented in the 1800s, they allowed advertisers to purchase space on the pillar for the public to read. New Advertisements were simply pasted over the old ones, making it much cheaper to apply the new one.
I think you would greatly enjoy the Italian Ab 43. It's def a gremlin tank and it has decent pen and APHE for its BR. Also it's got the fun Italian camo
On one hand I love aphe since it is a lot more easier to one shot people but on the hand given how french tanks and british ones do use solid shot it can work if there is backup like good armor or a fast reload.

APHE rant incoming... If it was historically accurate then it would have worse ballistics and penetration across the board. The shrapnel from the blast would only travel forwards because the explosive is not enough to overcome the inertia, and it would create only a small amount more spalling in a marginally wider spread. It would also have to have a pretty high chance of premature detonation when it hits a tank, this would of course ruin penetration. And It would also have to have a fair chance of not exploding when it penetrates a tank, like it goes in and hits the back wall of the tank and falls to the floor without exploding. If it penetrated a tank where the armour was too close to the max penetration maybe 75% of it's max pen, it would have deformed too much to detonate inside the tanks thus would not explode. In these instances it would be like a worse solid shot round. And Russian APHE rounds would have to have the very highest values in these failures because it was famously unreliable for the Russians. The British tested is extensively before the war with their 2 pounder gun, they were the only nation to do so which is why they never developed any APHE outside of the test rounds for the 2 pounder. They knew the trade off for slightly more spalling and spread for a round that was worse in every area was not worth it at all. After the war only the Russians kept trying (unsuccessfully) to make it work, everyone else in the world dropped it in favour of Solid shot and APDS then later APFSDS. APHE never worked as intended and it's showing in War Thunder is a complete fantasy, a total work of fiction.

I love the fact that the matilda II is technically a proto pike-nose. below that flat strip for the driver's view port you have to aim centrally because any lower front pen to the sides is just going into a void between the outer skin and the actual hull. I think they were used for storage irl. If you take those off, the hull would resemble the front of a Matilda 1.
Thats why i still use APHE in any rank possible because how powerful it is, and one of my matches I was playing a Churchill 1 and I had to fight 2 of those at once and somehow won.

They are straight up cylinders made from Concrete and steel. They were invented in Germany and are called Litfaßsäule
Those concrete cylinders seem to not stop any rounds of mine .. ive shot through it 3 times

The 2C is honestly bullying for low tier. Your armor isn't armor, it's the amount of people you have.

I forget the specific name, but the Turan 1 can go full speed in reverse actually, like 43km/hr.
