Thank You for giving me an idea. I fixed mine little bit different, I used: Muzata 40Pack Cable Railing Kit Protective Protector Sleeves Grommet for Wood Posts for 1/8" 5/32" 3/16" Wire Rope T316 Stainless Steel CR88 and some 5/16" stainless steel washers. Surprisingly CR88 fit perfectly in place of cheap plastic sleeves ( I had higher expectations from brand like Anderson...). $16 worth of parts, some adjustments and my door opens properly again. Thank You for sharing your fix!
Thanks FliesLikeABrick (!😅) I hope it works for you. In a "throw-away" society, it's good to get back to repairing rather than landfill. And it saves a few bucks to boot!
@@SaveMoneyTV I ended up doing something slightly different to repair mine, but your video was useful in seeing how to disassemble the hinge components - something I was hung up on for a bit
Great video, but if you've got a storm door or security door that isn't as bad as this one, you can just use a helper or a prybar to life the door and insert a 1/4" E-clip at the bottom of each hinge. A few cents and a few seconds. A few drops of oil is a good idea too.
Andersen storm doors have a lifetime warranty (as long as you registered your initial purchase). Our latch gave out after 12 years, they sent me a replacement no charge, no argument. Now starting to have hinge trouble, so will check with them on getting a replacement Z strip.
It's hard to say without seeing the door in question, but theoretically the spacer should just return the door to the height where it hung originally. But, I suppose it could depend on how much wear has occured, and where the wear has occured.
I use the brass because it is a little softer and as much as possible you want the nut to take the wear and tear rather than the hinge. Also, it's a good idea to oil the nut and hinge regularly. Again, by decreasing wear on the hinge, it will extend the life of the rail, and the repair. Good luck!
Yes, good idea, that would work too. Personally I prefer the brass because it won't rust, I like the softer metal against the aluminum, and also the fact that in a single nut I have more height options to get the hinge nice and tight. Worth mentioning to anyone reading, don't forget to oil your hinges regularly to prevent further wear and tear. Thank you for your great suggestion, and for watching. Much appreciated!
You may be able to find them on Amazon. Also check a local Habitat for Humanity Building Restore as they may have the whole unit, or something you could strip down for parts.
Isn't there a way to replace that hinge without having to remove the whole door? My center hinge pin has totally fallen out (bought the house that way). If I remove the top hinge and center hinge, is there a way to just replace the pin? Sorry..... I am a senior gal and that much work is too much for me :(
Hard to know if they would be compatible without seeing them. Is the hinge spacing the same? Most doors come with the frame and if this is the case, then using the manufactured frame would ensure the best hanging of the door.
Yes, but the new hinge rail was $60 (Canadian Dollars). I'll probably need to buy one eventually, but this should at least double it's life. Keep oiling it and it should extend it's life even further. Thanks for watching!
if you get the exact measurements of the hinge length on your door and the diameter and length of the guts from your door, there are multiple hinges "like" these hinges on Amazon. No one names this brand of storm door by name with replacement hinges (as of Aug 2024) but several look similar. I would guess that the reason this company started selling the entire "hinge rail" (pre-mounted hinges with an entire 80 inch strip of metal they sit in) is because over time they changed vendors for the hinges and guts and had slightly different hinge sizes and this way a) they charge you 3x to 4x what just the hinges themselves would cost and b) it covers up the slight changes in size over time.
I know this video is a couple years old but I felt compelled to comment. If you're going to grind the top off of the acorn nut anyway why not just start with a regular nut instead of an acorn a nut? I've done similar mods myself many times. I've used a nut or a couple of thick washers to use as bushings. But I don't understand why you had to start with acorn nuts.
Hi Bill, that's a great point. Another type of nut and/or washers will work too. I used the acorn nut because I wanted brass, and it was an easy to find brass nut that was in stock at any local hardware store and also the perfect diameter. Thanks for watching!
Good question. I prefer the brass because it's softer, and the acorn nut has extra depth so you can customize it's finished thickness; which will be different for each hinge repair. Don't forget to oil the repaired hinge a few times per year to prevent wear. Thanks for watching!
LOL! I have a country property with 2 houses, 2 barns, 1 workshop, 1 shed, and a pump house to maintain. (too much maintanance!!!) I have my tools, my Dad's tools, and my Grandpa's tools...it's still not enough! 😅
Now this is a Useful video !!!! Thank you !! other videos say #1. buy a new part, #2. screw it in. This was a Great video, how to Fix it !!!!
Thanks JC, I'm glad you found it helpful and practical. Thanks for watching!
my storm door has been sitting for years because i didn’t know how to fix it. now i do. you are amazing.
That is so wonderful! I'm glad I could help. Have a great day!
@@SaveMoneyTV thank you so much!!

Those guides have the exact inner and outer diameter as the plastic ones you replaced them with?
Great video on how to repair/replace the existing components instead of replacing the entire assembly!

Great fix and maintenance tip. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you both so much! The door not shutting is so frustrating and the E-Clip delayed the requirement to replace the Z Bar for at least another year!
Wow , I just took your information and fixed my 40 year old storm door didn’t need to file it back
Wow, great! I didn't know the mechanism would be the same. Another little tip not in the video is to keep the contact points oiled with machine oil.

I used zip ties until the weather improves. Thanks for sharing your fix.😊👍
Nice idea. Curious, how is that working? Thanks for watching!
@SaveMoneyTV believe it or not, it's been over a week and they are still holding up. 😊👍
Thank you, saved my day.
Cool! Glad it helped. :-)
My door blew off not long ago. So does all of them have a spring? Because i found all the pieces but maybe it’s the springs I’m missing
Is it possible if you put too large of a spacer that the door will be too high ?
It's hard to say without seeing the door in question, but theoretically the spacer should just return the door to the height where it hung originally.
But, I suppose it could depend on how much wear has occured, and where the wear has occured.
My hinges are broke. Can u just replace the hinges?
Dude, great video, you saved my life. thank you.
Possibly the best "thanks" I've ever received. Glad it was helpful!
is there any reason you can't just use multiple steel washers of a desirable diameter instead of the brass nut?
I haven't tried that, but it sounds feasible. Good luck!
5mm makes a lot of difference nice job
Thanks Hoosain!
Awesome video , I was just wondering , if I can use a regular nut , will that work thanks

Why not get regular nuts of the appropriate thickness instead of buying acorn nuts and modifying them?
Yes, good idea, that would work too. Personally I prefer the brass because it won't rust, I like the softer metal against the aluminum, and also the fact that in a single nut I have more height options to get the hinge nice and tight.

There are also new bushing kits available.

can a storm door be replaced using the same frame and just replacing the storm door itself?
Hard to know if they would be compatible without seeing them. Is the hinge spacing the same? Most doors come with the frame and if this is the case, then using the manufactured frame would ensure the best hanging of the door.

p.s. the part (at least for my Emco/Anderson storm door) is now $US89 on the Andersen website.

A new hinge rail is $60 ,you used a harder substance on aluminum it's going to eat it .
So my spring broke on my hinge, anybody got anything for that?
Maybe check a "Habitat for Humanity" Restore for used hinges and use it for parts?
That's insane how many tools you have at home 😂

Super!!!
Thank you! Cheers!
Can you tell me where I can get the pins, springs and washer as our storm door lost these. Thank you.
You could try contacting the manufacturer, or also look for parts at a building demolition contractor's yard in your area.
Jeanne, are you still looking for these parts? I may be able to make replacements if you aren't able to get them from Andersen
Duuuude! Thanks!!!!
No problem! Hope it was helpful.
