Painting a Coffee Shop in Procreate [how I plan bigger art projects]

  • A guilty pleasure of mine is to watch those long chill coffee shop videos on youtube.
I decided to make my own coffee shop that's inspired by the unusually snowy winter that's going on here.
In the end I have some big news about my memberships that I just launched.
I hope you enjoy this process. I don't remember the last time I worked on a single painting for so long🐻
Longer form videos, tutorials and exclusive content in my membership:

When you're in the opening phase of your paintings, I really wish that I could get into your head and watch what the heck is going on. I see a lot of color all over the place but I see almost no structure to any of it. Then as time goes on, all the random colors just start taking shape. It really is rather fascinating.

Just go to filters-> noise and adjust the noise from 0 to 100 by sliding to the right. (This is a practical way to see what’s happening in my head in the beginning 😁)

Even if your problems are "nothing" compared to others, they are still problems to you.
They are real, your emotions are real and to you they might be really devastating to you.
You are allowed your struggles, and to complain about them (in this very thoughtful way).
There will always be someone that have it worse, and someone having it better, and all we can do it to work with our self in out current situation, and try to help others who need it, but it is important to acknowledge you own struggles as such

Please don’t feel silly wanting the coffee shops and libraries to open up again, it might be a first world problem but your loneliness is not. I hope things get better soon so we can all do the little things like that that make us feel better 💖 I’m sorry you’re feeling lonely 🤗

Don't apologize for your feelings. It's not right of people to judge you for feeling bad about something like loneliness especially. That's a terrible feeling regardless of why or how it happens. Someone will always have it worse than someone else just like there's always someone who has it better. You're handling it in a good way! You're painting and talking about it which is a productive way to handle stress! Please don't apologize for your perfectly understandable feelings.
There's a really big difference between complaining about something that doesn't matter vs something as devastating as a global pandemic and loneliness. You're totally fine!!
The piece is so lovely and honestly the story behind it's creation makes it even more so in my opinion.

many problems when compared to other problems around the world seem like "first world problems", but the effects any problem, first world or not, has on a person are real and valid. Thank you for sharing how you have been feeling. My favorite part of art is that there is always a deeper meaning behind each piece. You are not alone in your feelings of isolation, I've been missing studying and drawing in coffee shops too. I absolutely love your art, keep doing what you're doing😊

I absolutely understand what you're talking about--when I couldn't go to my coffee shop anymore to work, my whole life kind of collapsed. The loneliness and purposelessness were overwhelming, especially with my ADHD making it extremely hard to do ANYTHING without a dedicated time/space to wrangle in my brain. I lost months and months of writing to the closure, which was a responsible decision I completely respect, but it doesn't change the impact. I'm glad you shared your feelings with us ♡

Somthing that I see in society these days that is unfortunate is that we put so much emphasis on other peoples problems sometimes to the detriment of our emotional health and development.
Just because someone else may have it worse does not mean that our emotions and the things that we find challenging are not real. We shouldn't prevent ourselves from feeling emotions or validating the struggles of others just because someone else has it worse. They don't get a monopoly on all the bad feelings just like someone better off doesn't have a monopoly on the good ones.
Long story short thank you for sharing your story for why you painted this painting and being open and humble. Sharing how you deal with these things helps the rest of us too. I Love this channel!

when you talk about you feel isolated, i really just want to hug you.
Don't underestimate the anxiety that arises from isolation. You have the right to feel bad, even if they are "problems" of the first world, they are just as valid. Greetings from a new "third world" fan

    Such a beautiful painting Mikko!
I empathize with your feelings of loneliness, you’re not alone. Since the start of the pandemic, I’ve had to work from home with the only person I see being my husband in the evenings. Most of my days are spent alone, and feelings of isolation and loneliness have become a challenge to my own happiness. One day UA-cam recommended one of your videos and I became so inspired I began digital painting. Which has provided me a form of escape and has helped me manage my own mental health. Thank you for your encouragement, you inspire me greatly!
The pain from the loss of your ability to paint at your favorite library is real. You don’t have to diminish that sorrow because you believe it’s inferior to the struggles of others. The pandemic is challenging for everyone, we all have our own unique battles. Your battle is worthy of recognition and deserving of self-care. One day, hopefully not too long from now, we all be able to enjoy life again in the way we once did. You’ll be able to paint again at your library, and what a wonderful reunion that will be!
In the meantime, please know how appreciative I am of you, your paintings, and these videos! I aspire to improve and eventually create something as incredible as one of your paintings. Even though they are currently far inferior to yours, I am proud of my paintings and they bring me joy. Something I don’t think I’d have learned if it wasn’t for the care and encouragement you fill these videos with. So thank you so much for that gift! You have provided me with a tool that brings me joy and a way to treat my own feelings of loneliness and isolation.
Your happiness is important and worth consideration. But know that I am thankful for you! ❤️

Mikko listen, this is incredible. Is not only your amazing sense of esthetic, the magical use of color and light, that I think you must agree is out of this world, but the thing that has me completely amazed is your use of words. The way you are expressing your feelings, the procesess that you are describing are representations of life itself. I came from your all pink house beautiful sky video, and even though I have nothing to do with painting or art I can completely completelyyy feel what you are saying just transporting it to what I'm living. You said you only need permition from yourself to start enjoying and believing in your self and I didn't know how much I needed to hear that. And now in this video, talking about loneliness and the spaces we give to ourselves and creating new ones, it's just amazing. You are amazing. Thankyou. And I extrapolated everything you said to medicine haha so imagine how much I resonated with it. Not medicine itself but the feeling of never knowing enough, and giving myself permission to be a part of the medicine world. I hope you get to read this, sending you love from Uruguay.

Hi Mikko, love your painting as always. Just wanted to stop by and say: you're not alone. The whole situation this past year has been suffocating and hurting people a lot and it is definitely not a first world problem! Yes, people have it worse, but the pandemic has had such an impact on everyone around the world that no one came prepared for. It is totally understandable that you want to get out of your house, some want to go party, others want to sit in the library to paint. There are so so many people who feel just like you (including me) and we cannot do much else right now, rather than wishing we could go to coffee shops and libraries to drink coffee and paint. That being said: stay healthy, stay creative - until you can go back to your favorite coffee shop :) Much love from Germany!

But even if we didn’t, I don’t think someone’s reason for painting needs to be super huge or deep and meaningful, or get everyone’s approval. I think your reason for making art should be your own :).

This is such a beautiful painting! I admit, I was envying you when you showed us that brief shot of all the beautiful snow and cold weather - I adore winter, and it's the middle of summer here... But that envy withered and died the moment you spoke about why you made this painting. We have been so, so lucky in Western Australia in the midst of this pandemic. It's barely touched us. Only yesterday, I was painting in the library.
I may long for the snow, but I was taking the privileges I have here for granted. It's important to stop and remember how very precious those small freedoms are.
I hope Finland is able to get on top of the virus soon, so you can paint in the library again.

An idea is not a painting. It’s never going to be exactly the way it is in your head because it’s on a canvas. In your head it doesn’t need to abide by normal rules of composition or physical space like it has to on canvas.
We can’t see an idea but we can see a real painting. This is why publishing your work matters.

I recently started saving all my old works just so I can go back, critique, and appreciate where I have been and where I'm going. My friend also told me to write down any good things I like about my art. This way I can see what elements I want to keep in my "art style" moving forward.
