  • I've always found a certain vulnerability in the Phantom. I've studied this musical inside and out (I even wrote a semiotic and visual analysis for a paper in university!). The Phantom is doomed to never have a happy ending. It's one of musical theatres biggest tragedies and that's what makes it so phenomenal.
During the scene of Music of The Night the Phantom is trying to persuade and essentially hypnotize Christine however this is not a love song. The Phantom is not asking Christine to fall in love with him, he doesn’t understand true love at this point. Rather he is demanding her. He therefore creates a sinister juxtaposition between seduction and his intent: to trap her in the dark with him forever. In this video I have tried to capture these themes in the transitions between scenes and fading in and out of colour and black and white. This represents Christine fading in and out of hypnosis as well as the Phantom trying to convince Christine of all she can be, but saying that she doesn’t have it all yet.
The Phantom does not have a feel good story, he feels things deeply and not in a pretty way, yet he captivates both Christine in his own story and the world watching it.
