Can we give a moment of thanks to the music engineer? The clarity and ability to hear each “voice” in this recording is extraordinary! (Not to mention the way to “low end” comes through so well!)
Yeah, some of the stuff they've done with the horns, harp, and upper winds is just fantastic!
I was the tmpanist in this & this was recorded in Dolby Atmos (Ten Times better than Dolby Digital) those microphones pick up the smallest noise like turning the page of your music to loud & in my case adjusting the note of the timpani using a creaky pedal. If you get yourself a Dolby Atmos sound bar then you won't regret it. As a professional musician i have played many versions of ALW's musicals (Phantom, Love Never Dies, Superstar etc) & this is the best suite arrangement i have ever played in) Andrew also did a suite for Sunset Boulevard & Evita recorded in the same sitting over 2 days. Here are the links for these & share this beautiful music. sunset Boulevarde .ua-cam.com/video/T30YnAwgjtU/v-deo.html & Evita. ua-cam.com/video/LiZ0TlZ8WgM/v-deo.html. Enjoy.

How can my obssession with Phantom ever end when the music and the performance are so amazing?
For real
You re not the only one ❤
Oh my goodness this is absolutely phenomenal. Some of these harmonies are so luscious and full they legitimately elicit a smile and shiver from me. Bravo to all of the performers and to ALW for creating this masterpiece
I know! I’ve always loved when the French horn finishes music of the night 7:22 and the rest of the orchestra moves up the scale until they meet the French horn at the final chord!!! And in this rendition it was awesome!
I’ve been really into Phantom lately, for some reason. Watching this and hearing this is just magnificent. Thank you for this amazing post. 😎
It sounds like the horn is calling the other instruments to rise to this wonderful level.
"Sir" Lloyd Webber didn't create it, the orchestrator did. Webber just dotted a few notes down, and they did the rest.
@@praestant8
But what "Dots and Lines" they are.
Great to hear a good orchestra playing for a change!
this has the most phenomenal mixing of any orchestral performance I've ever heard. genuinely astounding how well balanced everything is
Andrew Lloyd Webber is simply a genius, creating such beautiful music!! 👌
Nah
He is not! This music was created by Pink Floyd - Echoes ;)
@@sophiasupernova8407 Uhm yes they both used the chromatic scale, but I would hardly say that this was composed by Pink Floyd...
@@ineedmorehobbies4853 Lloyd Weber stolen also phrases from Puccinis Opera ;)
@@ineedmorehobbies4853 Echoes of Pink Floyd was composed in the 1971 😉
Guaranteed to be the best 25 minutes of your life this year.
And in celebration of the show’s 35th anniversary.
@@darthkurland Thanks i did not know that. Cheers!
That piccolo player is AMAZING. As a flutist and piccolo player myself, his intonation and sound is mesmerizing. The climax of Masquerade is where he really shines.
This is so beautiful. I can't read music or play any instruments. This is amazing. I can close my eyes and I can see the scenes come to life. Thank you Sir for Phantom.

I am the same, harmonies confuse me, I can't hold a note to save myself. But in this clip I can sing like Michael Crawford, my imagination puts me there. For a music tragic like myself this is wonderful.
PS. I share your frustrations in our lack of musical ability :)
And you just made me cry as I read your comment with Think of Me playing in the background. I lack musical abilities too but I am highly sensitive and this kind of music makes me feel safe.
This is simply the best version I've heard of this masterpiece
One of the best orchestrations I have heard of the show (or any Broadway show). Follows in the traditions of the French and English masters, and yet it is fresh and original. And a nice nod to Stravinsky at the end. Really fantastic! Hats off to all involved, especially the orchestrator. I wish that person was acknowledged in the description.
Is a shame they never mentioned him. I look around and found the name of the orchestrator: Andrew Cottee.
Strange thing, but whilst I love his “big” works, this album left me cold. I thought the lifeless orchestrations were the poorest I’ve heard for his larger scale pieces.
@@JonathanSao He must’ve used the original orchestrations by David Cullen and Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber himself as the starting point.
By Stravinsky, do you mean the conclusion of “The Firebird?”
@@darthkurland Yes, very similar in orchestration, the triangle, the tremolo in the strings, the crescendo into the crash cymbal to punctuate the ending. Very effective.
HUGE orchestra! Have ever so many capable and enthusiastic professionals assembled to give their hearts to this mesmerizing masterpiece??
Sure, for the Phantom film
I was the timpanist in this, This orchestra is probably around 70-80 musicians but a full symphonic orchestra which i played in the Phantom of the Opera live musical some years ago had about 120 musicians. Because all the instruments are mic'd up it sounds bigger than what you might think. If you ever get the chance to see any ALW show that has a full Symphonic Orchestra beg, borrow or steal to get a ticket, you will never forget it. These types of music sounds 10 times better if you have "Dolby Atmos". It sounds like your sitting in the middle of the orchestra with the sound coming above you, behind you on your left, on your right etc This is probably the best arrangement of a phantom Suite i have ever heard.
The secret for how so many great musicians gather to peform such great music is....$74.00 per hour.
@@helpstopanimalabuse8153 A Golden Key for Golden Tones...
@@helpstopanimalabuse8153 This comment, sir, wins the internet ;-)
One of God’s greatest gifts to humanity is music. This orchestra really really really made that gift shine. WOW is an understatement.
I couldn’t stop crying throughout. Yes 21 minutes of pure joy and emotion. Thank you for this. ❤
Your welcome, i play this every day.
Andrew Lloyd Webber this is absolutely perfection. ❤😊
I really wish someone would do this for some of Stephen Sondheim's musicals, specifically Into the Woods and Sweeney Todd. A symphonic version of Johanna, Children Will Listen, No One Is Alone, Epiphany, etc., would knock the wind out of me. A symphonic suite of Sunday in the Park with George would also be fantastic
I'm pretty sure there is a symphonic suite for Sweeney Todd...

One of the best shows I've ever seened: I know every single note!
Thanks for this video!
In the show the transition from Masquerade to the Phantom's theme is so gripping and powerful... those five beats that just strangle the party. My favourite single moment of my favourite musical.
WOW! This organ intro makes your 'hair stand on end'!
If you want another thrilling organ experience, listen to Saint Saens' Organ Symphony. There are many recordings. Here is one:

It’s the first time in my life I’ve been speechless for 21 minutes and 25 seconds. ❤
Man, this is music. Music that makes you remember just how epic an organ can get.
Who mixed this? This is incredible. Listening to it on studio monitors and subs. UNREAL!
I do not know who mixed it. But he or she sure did an amazing job! So crystal clear! I hope you check this recording with all of your subs too. This was done by Gregory K. Squires! ua-cam.com/video/e459wlIjOns/v-deo.html
I wish I knew. My guess would be Shawn Murphy.
It definitely should sound amazing, seeing how many microphones they have set up to capture everything. I can't even imagine what that is like to set up and run, not to mention the mixing.
Mixed by Such Sweet Thunder who are Kirsty Whalley and Peter Cobbin. They have mixed many famous film scores. They are also credited with having recorded it which is an amazing piece of work in itself.
Does anyone know why they are using home speakers in front of the conductor?
i'll never get tired of this music, its absolutely genius and phenomenal......... have no idea how someone could ever put such a story into such music. i always cry listening to it
Thank you thank you thank you for this!!!! Phantom has been my favorite since I was 12 now 45....your music is beautiful and will delight many generations to come. Thank you Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber ❤

Thank you huge fan here in memory of Brooke and Lynn RIP
Watched Phantom in London this past Friday. It was so superb to be back. I recognise the conductor here from the show
Magnificent! Lloyd Weber is truly a great composer.
It lead me back to 2004 when I saw The Phantom movie. I was mesmerized by this themes in that time and now again. Today that cinema doesn't exist anymore but the memories remain vivid in my memory. Bravo maestro.
I can't ever imagine saying goodbye to POTO after being a phan for more than 10 years. I could still remember the time that I flew to London for the first time for POTO 25th Anniversary, continuing my music dream all these years. I have once imagined bringing the person I meet in the future and share with him this miraculous moment of watching my favourite musical together. I am so sad that this journey is coming to n end this soon, but as long as the memory lives on in our hearts, this musical will never die.
I cried in several moments of this masterpiece. Nothing to add. Just listen to it.
I was in tears one moment and almost out of my body in ecstasy the next. Not often one can say that you have cried out of sheer joy because of music so beautiful. Andrew please please follow up with Love Never Dies! It will make my life having been worth living.
I came so close to giving this performance a round of applause!
I first saw "The Phantom of the Opera" when I was 17. I thought that it was the most amazing thing in the world.

This was incredibly wonderful. Andrew LLoyd Webber has written so many smashing scores, I wish all of the others he wrote would become movies also so we could live them forever.
I don't know why but I'm crying my eyes out here, this reminded me why I'm struggling so hard to become a composer
Thoroughly enjoyed this
When you get goosebumps all over your body by the end of Overture, you know the rest will be just if not more awesome! 🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
San Francisco midweek performance box seats in the early nineties, what a treat! The original Masquerade scene was brilliant and so vividly colorful. First time I saw grandfatherly men cry at the ending. I would love to see it again live with an orchestra this size😍😍

The BEST MUSICAL in history, period!
Beautiful, imaginative and intriguing! This music takes you through the labyrinth of the underground dwelling of the Phantom. One of the best symphonic suites, ever! I keep going back to it. This music is enchanting!
One of the greatest full symphonic performances & best arrangement of ALW's Phantoms suites i have ever played. Special mention to the french horn players they were outstanding. Must have really busted their chops.
Flawless execution and direction. Honor,,,,,
Andrew's talent as an arranger/orchestrator has always outshone his talent as a composer.
He didn't arrange it :)
@@joshuadshepherd do you have any information on who did? Every source I’ve seen has either not mentioned an arranger or implied it was him, so I just figured it must have been. He does a lot of his own.
I still stand by my point! I think it’s true.
@@joshuadshepherd oh, I see here the arrangements were done by Andrew Cottee? I find it hard to believe Andrew LW didn’t have his hands in that pie as well, but Cottee has done a terrific job!
@@joshuadshepherd at the very least, a lot of the arrangements here lift quite heavily from Lloyd Webber and David Cullen’s original work!

Wow, stellar performance and audio. Congratulations to all involved
More than amazing performance you charmed my heart
I am so happy I ran across this scanning thru you tube. All the times I've seen the phantom I never once saw the orchestra play these beautiful and touching pieces. How many people are in this orchestra...they're spread out in such a large area. Mr. Weber, you are a genius. I have to admit I loved the Phantom with Gerard in it, the modern Phantom I didn't really care for...everything done on stage, the settings, costumes etc just weren't there. Thank you...love music, loved this video! ❤🎼🎶🎵
I was the timpanist in this there were close to 80 musicians but with everybody micd up it sounded more like a full symphonic orchestra which has usually at least 120 people. It was recorded over 2 days & Simon Lee really worked us hard. There was a young flutist (around 18) who was struggling with her part & was sacked & given her marching orders in front of the entire orchestra. I think Simon Lee could have handled that better. He is a real tough judge but he is a real hard ass although these musicians are the best of the best & are paid well & there should be a expectation that the musicians should deliver first class music. A hard, arduous 2 days but also enjoyable.
@@helpstopanimalabuse8153 Great to hear from an insider of the performance. Also, I hate it when the video director or editor does not recognize that when ever the timpanist is playing, he is the most visual instrumentalist in the orchestra.
@@1106gary You must be a mind reader, i was the Timpanist. The timpanis are the link between the brass & percussion. You need excellent tone hearing. If you hit one off note it's very obvious. it is a challenging instrument. Everybody was spaced out because of Covid. This was filmed at the Theatre Royal which ALW owns & had just spent 19 million dollars on a complete refurbishment. it looks stunning. The top section is very high & steep. There are 2 other similar pieces we recorded. Just search "Sunset Boulevarde Symphonic Suite" & Evita Symphonic Suite.
Wonderful as a musician, to see the camera going around and picking up individual players in action-love it!
I would buy the physical CD to this.
I just did! Love it, came in within 2 days, Amazon.
