I bought mine in 2009 and have put 97,000 miles on it, I've loved every one. The dealer had 2 and they were deeply discounted because they had been on the lot for almost a year. I knew when I first saw it that it would be something special for the ages, I'm so glad I bought it. In 2015 I bought the last APR supercharger kit they had on the shelf, taking mine to 688HP at the crank (APR tested). A lot of people called me crazy because the kit was $15,000, and going forced induction wasn't a good move. Let me tell you, it puts a smile on my face every time it cranks to life. 15 years later and I still look over my shoulder when I walk away. In addition to the supercharger I've added: suspension upgrades, brake upgrades, clutch upgrades, exhaust, and a short throw shifter rounds out my "Beast."
"I still look over my shoulder when I walk away" only had mine for 2 years but I can so relate, I like to play the what car in the car park is the nicest game, then I'm like holy shoot that gorgeous thing over there, then I'm like wtf this thing is mine, then I open the door and get in, turn it on and leave the car park with huge V8 noises, I am living my best life.

Fell in love with B7 RS4 the moment I saw and read about it. I have one now, I must say even if you drive one now within limits minding your own business, it somehow turn heads plus it tends to instigates other sports cars and supercars pull behind us or on the side just waiting to hear the V8 sing through the oval pipes!

To answer you comment regarding quality in this RS4, keep in mind that these days there was only one RS model per year. So they used to put all the quattroGmbH (now Audi Sport) division’ efforts to produce and deliver the best they could on one model in contrast with today’s 7 or 8 RSs per year.

Had a b7 rs4 and a b9. The b9 is definitely built better but for pretty much everything else the b7 rs4 was incredible. Favorite car I’ve ever owned.

Hi Mate! 6 calipers on front was on ceramic discs, 8 calipers on steel discs. Apart from that I prefer my Avant ;) cheers mate. Take care.

The carbon front brakes were 6 pots if that helps lol.

@@DrivenPlus me as a teenager always wanted one and finally after many years got the dream car. You nailed the review , the way they sound ( cant beat a V8 ) , handling, those seats are so comfortable and the way you can be in 4/5th gear at 30mph and then put your foot down and the torque pulls you way past the legal limit in seconds :) True, typical Audi occasion and oddness. Like the way the wing mirrors are fixed ( no folding ) , the push button start even though you need the key in, just bizzare but what a complete package. I do hope the car you drove was yours... if not buy it !!

The credit crunch was what happened to cars. Companies had the money to make these cars out of whatever they wanted, and the people had the money to buy them. The way people bought cars back then is also the reason why they still look good today; they were built to look timeless because people hung onto them. Today, with leasing and PCP, cars only have to look fresh for two or three years because their “owners” would have chopped them in for something else (to impress their mates). As you say looks are subjective, so I’ll keep my B7 Avant version. With Audi’s tradition in fast wagons, it could only ever be an Avant for me.

The saloon is better looking than the avant. It’s the only RS4 Audi made in a saloon variant and that makes it even more special.

I had kne in 07. I always felt that it was like 2 Honda engines welded together. I had to really rev the thing. But, it was a fantastic move by Audi. The DRC was very delicate.

I am currently at 1:42 and I can honestly say I'm a little shocked at how uncanny what you are saying is. Like yourself, I'm not a big Audi fan. I love the older Quattro stuff but the only two "modern" Audi's I would own would either be the R8 (4.2 Manual) or a B7 RS4. Both are dream cars for me. As you said also I feel they were out to prove a point and ended up creating a unique, usable and incredible car. Something that seems more than the sum of its parts. Your summary of it being the "golden era" for Audi is also very true.

Drove beautifully, sounded amazing and even rode well - until DRC played up. Engine cokes up too if not driven hard. Much prettier than anything else on the road today mind you. Nailed on classic. I had an m3 of this era and this sounded even better.

Same colour as mine but mines an avant. Mine has the nrc stage 2 upgrade as well. They drive totally different to a standard one especially with the sport button pressed. Ive had mine 7 years now and its a summer car. Ill never sell it.

The reason why this RS4 saloon handles so well is that it was set up by Centre Gravity. No understeer.

Great review and presentation, speaking as someone who works professionally in TV and Film. Though most people prefer the Avant for looks and because it is a proper and unique GTE, that sits at home on the fun roads of the European Grand Tour - most estates you imagine the child seat and the dog, on the way to the garden centre; not the RS4 B7 Avant, more likely the skis on the roof rack, on the spirited drive to Zermat. Perhaps one of the last of the real driver's cars; manual, naturally aspirated V8, quattro and without the nannying of modern driver's electronic assistance. Since it has double din you can easily remove that ancient sat nav for a good modern wireless Android Auto/Carplay one, and keep it, at home, for authenticity; this makes these cars fully tractable today.
I have one of the lesser mortal B7s, now on a quarter of million miles and I can attest to the quality build; the interior and exterior still look like a low mileage 5 year old, without squeaks or rattles; still fine looking design too; IMO the best A4 shape so far; less aggressive but more muscular than recent versions. Cars of the late 2000s were better built as a consumer reaction to the poor 80s/90s; now model change is quicker and quality has dropped. The only rust a well cared for one has is the front wing lips, easily replaced, as in mine. I'm looking hard for a good RS4 B7 Avant at the moment to keep the humble one company; they will go up in price hugely one day.

@@DrivenPlus You're welcome - it was a proper and grown up review, without the pretentiousness of some motoring journalists, whose false bonhomie trys to kid you that it's a comfy chat between Hamilton and Alonso; and you don't talk down to us either; nicely filmed too. I'm impressed with YT videos these days - I watch them more than Netflix and frankly some of them are better made than the telly I work on. These are complicated machines; a good looking one is not enough, they have to be right or they become a serious money pit; hence the long search. Cheers.

It is one very special motor that undeniably needs very special maintenance for sure. It can't be run on a budget and the correct service history is vital, but boy does it reward that TLC.

Why would this car be put above the 8300rpm rs5? Because it has four doors? manual?
Is it the same motor as the b8 (or b8.5) RS5?
Very similar but 30bhp more on B8. I heard it was map and things like alternator cut out at high revs.

100% agree i say it all the time. 2003ish to 2013ish is the best for so many cars...engines were breaking the 400hp mark which was unheard of unless you had a supercar and to be honest 400-500hp is where its at..its fast..but usable. And the styling the likes of audi bmw merc jags Maserati all making bold but elegant designs with subtle lips and flares...now look at bmw...completely lost it. Crazynto think that the e60 m5 was so ridiculed for its looks when it came out.

The b7 was an awesome car, but very front heavy, they changed the engine location a slight bit for the b8 and it has less overhang and a better weight distribution. The v8 was also just a heavy engine
what about the timing chain
It's expensive to do like everything on this weapon but we'll worth it !!! it's not same as s4 with 4.2 aluminum guides not plastic
Not an issue with this engine. The S4 engine had timing chain issues. The RS4 sngine is the same ending in the R8 of this era

The B5 was miles better built that the B6 and 7
Epic engine but DFI was another sign of those times, which the 90s didn't suffer

Prolly BMW boy using the standard bring the RS4 down so I can say my M3 is better. Or just reading interweb bs. And the other thing, high running costs? Have had mine 11 years and I've spent less on mine than a Ford Focus. Yeah the disks will need doing £2k, and yeah the gearbox will go about £1.5k and you'll have to carbon clean every 40,000 miles but its not so bad. Of course, if you get a rogue one god that would be scary! @@neilmcguinness4422
