The Superformance Corvette Grand Sport is Modern History

  • You'll never drive a real one. Chevrolet only built five original Corvette Grand Sport race cars back in the early 1960s. The last time one sold, it reportedly fetched $5,000,000 and that was in 2009. You can drive one of these though; this is Superformance Corvette Grand Sport.
    Superformance has the full rights to build these licensed continuation cars, which are basically the same deal as the original Grand Sports. The good news on these cars, however, is that you can choose from one of eight available engines offered up through the GM Performance Parts catalog.
    We sampled two versions of the car; one with a modern LT1 making 460 horsepower and the other with a Lingenfelter-prepped LS3 producing 500 horsepower.
    Both versions are loud, aggressive, and in your face. If we had the dough, we'd happily take a Superformance Grand Sport over any modern supercar. You can be shouty in a Lamborghini, but you're shouty and you get it when you do so in this vintage racing machine... that just so happens to be brand new.

    • @davidmerritt5075

      The problem with the Webers is that the 58 mm DCOE carbs and the intake for them are semi unavailable. What you can get readily are 48 mm DCOEs and a manifold for them. In the real world you can make the 48s with big chokes work fine on a 377. The 48s will flow enough for about 550 HP. Someone who knows what they're looking at will know the 48s are not 58s.

    Wow. Beautiful car, fantastic noises. Can’t imagine what sort of fun that is to drive. I’d be torn between spec’ing mine with a Lingenfelter LS with those velocity stacks, or the period-correct all aluminum SBC running the Weber cross-ram setup. Modern reliability with brutal power? Or original noises and all the “personality” that goes with an engine breathing thru Webers? Tough call. Would be a fantastic automobile either way. Now if I can convince wifey that this is an appropriate use of $150k+...

    No one really talks about one of the biggest factors of why the Corvette Grand Sport was so important. Corvette C2s and C3s are heavy fat pigs with massive steel full frames. To become competitive they had to to loose weight and that was done via a whole new rolling chassis under the cars and thinner fiberglass bodies. Since, GM killed the project, it worked out great for the Shelby Cobra and Daytona Coupes to dominate racing in the States and overseas for the next two years. In the states it was pretty easy to make the low tech-stripped down Mustangs competitive against Corvettes in most racing classes due the the light weight steel bodies and torque happy big blocks. In would gladly take my Gramd Sport with modern fuel injection any day!

    • @asmodai2025
      @asmodai2025 2 роки тому +1

      No, because the C2 Corvette Grand Sport uses a purpose built race chassis with special body panels, with both the frame and the body panels being physically smaller than those of a regular C2 Corvette. They were also built using the original blueprints used to build the original 1963 Grand Sports.

    Last I checked, Mongoose sells the kit, just over $16k, Body/Chassis. I can take it from there. I have built every vehicle since my 1st, which was a 68 Camaro. Late model Vette suspension, under GS bodywork. This IS what I've been think about, since B4 Mongoose...Back in the D&D Corvette days...I still have my issues of kit car mag, somewhere. My health is not working out, so I may be going home early. Would be my greatest achievement building a GS. I have motors out the ***. I can build one heck of an engine.

      I think it is not possible in any EU Country.
