This is so helpful! I’m moving into my first studio apartment this summer and I’ve been a bit nervous about styling lol. Love your channel.
Aw thank you Sophia! I'm so glad you found it helpful. Trust me, it's VERY possible to make a studio look amazing. You got this!
My new friend is in a 350 sq ft efficiency apartment. Good thing he’s a minimalist. His rent is ridiculously low, so he’s staying put. I’ve offered to help him with decluttering, furniture layout, and storage solutions. So I’ve started perusing UA-cam, your channel first (of course).
As an artist with a tablet setup etc. I do need a desk. Same goes for my programming hobbies! But other than that this was really really helpful! Thank you so much
I was thinking the same, as an artist, with a really big laptop and display tablet I would definitely need a desk! 😭😁. But this was a good video either way
I like the bed screened from view so the apartment doesn't look like a hotel room.
Interesting! In my tiny flat, I have an octagon travertine table which is the centerpiece of my apartment. It is the focal point and everything is styled around it. It hosts dinner parties at night, Sunday brunches with friends and is my workspace during the day. Actually during the first covid lockdown is when I invested in a sturdy large table because I couldn't work all day from home without it. Single best investment. 100 agree about the coffee tables. Instead I have small side tables I can move around as needed. I live in 40 square meters / 430 square feet.
Ooh love that! It sounds like for you, a dining table is a crucial element in your space! Goes to show that it all comes down to what's important to the individual. 😊 And you're right, moveable tables really come in handy!
OMG. Your place is so awesome and you look like a creative person. Love your videos.
Thank you so much!!
A dining table is a must for me. It doesn’t have to be big table, but there has to be a designated space where I can eat
I agree much better for your digestion sitting to a table.
I also use my dining table as a desk as well.. Plus I have back issues and want to be able to use a comfortable chair + ergonomic pillow. I don’t want to be hunched over and like the height. I’m in a 2 BR atm, but in small studios I had a table with fold-down top, that could be pulled out (the top) and folded down and then be used as a side table.
For ergonomic reasons, I'd have to encourage not making a habit of working from the couch. I've been a remote worker for over five years, with no problems during the first half. During COVID, in order to change up my scenery throughout the day, I worked everywhere but my desk and ended up messing up my back from neck to shoulder. After a quick but necessary chastising from my PCP who is a DO, I went back to sitting at my desk, with a few adjustments, and making sure to take regular stretch breaks every 30 mins to an hours
Yes it is terrible for the back. I have a desk and ergonomic chair because of that but still use the couch occasionally.
I have a big, beautiful round dining table. It's better than a desk, that I don't use anyway. 😅 So as long as I have room for my dining table and my couch and a smaller bed I'm happy. 😅💜
I prefer much empty room without too many accesories in studio aprtmt. Overstimulating with so much accesories. However you do your layout efficient and beautiful.
I no longer decorate my place for company (hardly have any anyway) It saves space reducing the need for dining tables, couches, etc. Just pull up a chair when needed. My place is similar to yours. I got rid of the dining table, coffee table and desk. I do have a giant entertainment center, which I love and walk-in closet. I believe you can express your self more when you just decorate for just your personal space and also save money.
Yep I'm the same way! The thought of decorating for potential guests doesn't even cross my mind haha
@ModaMisfit thanks for responding. I shall subscribe and look forward to watching more of your videos
Honestly, the number one non-essential item in most studio apartments (except those very few with a highly defined and sectioned off hidden area for it) is a separate bed. Invest in a good quality daybed or sofabed and you won't feel like a tween having her friends over after school to play Monopoly in your bedroom! (Embarrassing!) It also frees up a surprising amount of floor space, giving you room for a small table and chairs, a storage ottoman that doubles as a coffee table or extra seating, and bookshelves/display shelves! Oh yeah, and a tiny desk, a dogbed, and a big*** dog crate! And a Kallax unit I love. And a sofa/console table and a vintage bar cart. Wow, you can fit a ton of useful items in under 500 sq ft if you don't waste most of it on a bed.
Agree, but scrap the dog crate…never needed.
Scoliosis people cannot sleep in just whatever
I’d add to that a big waste of space is a tv. Just use your laptop .
I can't remember the last time I had a mattress. I've been sleeping on a three piece sectional sofa that I love - its great!!
My sister & I have separate studios she has queen bed, couch & love seat, dresser & chest of drawers. I opted for very small 30in or close bar pub table in kitchen still space to move around. I have a twin size bed. Downsized from a full. Turning mattress was too much so I went for smaller bed. I have an ottoman bed. I’m heavy so i bought an 8in cot mattress needed more cushion for comfort. Couldn’t stay in it was just too narrow. I really liked it. Still working on what to have or not have. Thanks for the tips
gosh there's so many vids on studio apt styling - but I like your presentation so I'll follow you. Thanks you give great ideas!
Thank you!
This really helped me calm down about furnishing my studio! I think I may even skip having a living room 😊
Steffi taught me that it IS possible to have too much storage furniture pieces in a small space! For example, I had two full bookshelves, two nightstands (well, they were just cheap 2-tier open shelves from Lowe's I sorta used as nightstands haha), another mini shelving unit, and a mini 6-drawer unit (similar to the popular Ikea Alex drawers). Because I live in a studio, I thought an excessive amount of storage shelving was absolutely NECESSARY. Turns out that's not true at all! I've now comfortably downsized from 6 furniture units to just 3 (including just ONE bookshelf from 2 FULL bookshelves), and even found a way to comfortably store all my things in a decorative, uncluttered way! I think that goes right along with the suggestion to axe the dining table, because it's all about maximizing the small space you have so you have more room to decorate! It's an absolute game-changer! :)
YES!!! You are a STAR Small Apartment Styling School student, Keiko!
Thanks for these interesting, unconventional tips. Love your apartment.
Most studios I have seen lately apartment hunting have a room with a half wall
I live in a studio with my partner and a dining table is necessary. It’s where we spend most of our time together.
Good tips on the no desk part! Who cares about ergonomics anyway right?
The people with bad backs like me beg to differ.
Thank you for watching! What do YOU think is unnecessary for a studio apartment? How do you make the most of a small space? Do tell!
i vote the dining table.
I wish you would show your studio completely while you were explaining
I feel like I'm a lonely holdout in that I would rather have a desk and a dining table than a sofa. I just don't ever have people over and I hate crumbs on my sheets. I feel like finding layouts without a tv and sofa as the focal points is basically impossible...
Mount the tv on the wall! Use that vertical space ;)
the wall decor on the wall at your desk. where can I find it 🤔
Great and awesome tips... That I totally agree and relate to!
I love the idea of using a dresser for a tv on top instead of a TV stand for a studio!
I just threw out my 4-seat dining table, switching it for a 2-seat (4 seat possible) fold out table. I have a beautiful green vintage sewing machine and a big screen stationary computer and also need space for doing crafts. Solved it by using IKEA Kallax shelves as storage and “legs” and put a 4 meter countertop over it. IMy TV hangs at the back (I use wallpaper for cover up) of another tall IKEA Kallax wish I also use as a divider between bed and kitchen area. I watch TV from bed case I don’t have space for a coach.
All this sounds awesome! Here's to making small apartment living WORK!
I don’t understand why people feel the need to have a big bed in a small studio. Get a very nice couch that has a trundle to make it a double or get a transformable desk that doubles as a Murphy bed. Additionally, a transformable coffee table can be three pieces in one…a coffee table that turns to a work desk that turns into a dining room table for when you have your friends over for dinner.
I am moving to a studio apartment, and I just woke up thinking today wait maybe I should get a "sofa bed" instead of my bed even if I really like my bed (just gotta last year and I love the style, I think this, so I can fit my piano keyboard because I don't want to get rid of it
I don't even watch TV. I craft, do food prep, and do all my paperwork at the kitchen table as it's next to my kitchen alcove. Here's the problem- l am disabled and have to have an oxygen concentrator and CPAP by my bed. I have a two drawer dresser at the end of the bed, a rocker, and my book shelf next to the entrance to the dressing room and bathroom. My art stuff, cleaning supplies, and extra towels are in a cabinet tucked in to the dressing room. I wish l could include pictures because l'm getting frustrated with my setup. Most people come over and hang out at the table. I'm trying to reconfigure but l need a lot of help, and there is nobody.. lbvs
What if I have guests over?.
I understand the desk thing, but if you're a PC gamer, you'll need a desk. You can make due with a smaller desk to save space.
I have a studio that is 190 sq feet should I put my couch like your my bed is in the same space as yours? So is my tv
Basically eliminate every table in the place and that's it 🤣🤣
How much you save for your studio
One challenge is if you move into a “furnished” studio, as I did. They are common in Paris. I’m working on it, though :-) Fortunately, the pieces worked together well. I am able to blend my own furniture in fairly well.
Ah nice! A furnished apartment sounds great, but I could picture it being a challenge for me because I like to have control over every decor/furniture decision. 😅 It sounds like you've been able to make it work with your own stuff, so that's awesome!
@@ModaMisfit it's a work in progress, but it's coming along :-) I'm enjoying the process now that things have opened here and I can make the necessary adjustments, buy organizational elements, add decoration, etc.
I'll be moving into my first studio soon, and your videos are so inspiring. I love having a table to eat at, so I'm thankful for your tips. I also have a small upright piano I inherited that I hope will fit.
I hope you were able to fit in your piano. Having a piano has been a life saver during covid.
@@jadakowers4727 The movers messed up my piano. It's no longer playable. The piano fits, but can't play it.
I work from home so having a dedicated desk is a must as I have 2 monitors
My dresser is on the side of the bed where I watch TV and my neck pain decrees, I put it in front of the bed. I'm buying a blanket box for it and winter clothes stashed inside. My round table is divided Eating on one side and working on the other with a laptop. No dividers. It would be like those sectioned-off cubicles and would be claustrophobic.
I think ALL studio apartments should already have ceiling 🪝 for
Plants
Mobiles
🪁 kites
Pictures
Mirror’s
Macrame
ETC!!!
No desk? yeah, when one uses the laptop AND 2 monitors for work, a desk is a necessity. And then there's the crazy gamers who have a bazillion monitors. Good perspective overall though.
I need a dining table to in order to prioritize cooking healthy meals. Meal times are sacred for me
Dare I add a bar cart to the list? Of course this depends on a person’s lifestyle, but unless you have friends dropping in for drinks on a regular basis, is a specialised cart with a range of drinks really necessary?
I agree with the points you raise, Steffi - although for myself I always have to have some sort of dining table, even if it’s tiny. You’re spot on about coffee tables; my living room is pretty much a corridor between the front door and the kitchen. I have nesting tables, and just get one out if I really need it. Otherwise I prefer to balance drinks on the nice wide arms of my favourite chair!
I also think you make a good point about the dividers; they do suit some studios, depending on size and layout of the apartment, but I think in most places they just limit the space.
Target has great drink tables in the Hearth & Hand collection. Perfect for chair side drinks and snacks. Since I’m downsizing to a studio in a few weeks I sold my table and chairs. We’ll see how it goes. If I find I need a table & chairs there’s always the ADDE chairs and the matching 29 1/2” table from IKEA. I also sold my loveseat. Just going to do upholstered chairs in living space.
Exactly! And yes, a bar cart is definitely not a must-have. I love a good bar cart and would love to have one, but it's not important enough for me to have it take up the space it would take up!
Sounds awesome, Jill! Good luck with your move into your new studio!!
Just a laptop won't work for some of us. We need a proper table to keep at least two monitors on it
I fit everything in my 441 sq ft studio: living room area with coffee table and tv stand, bedroom area with queen size bed, art studio area, reading nook area, dining area with dining table...all in the main space. Then there’s a separate kitchen and bathroom
What are the Dimensions
Excellent ideas! Beautiful furniture color scheme too! Also I just downloaded your manuals and can't wait to check them out ;) Thank you!! 🌹🌷🌻
Omg girl u have so much of my passions, from 70 rock music to anime, sailor moon, death note and your cat and aesthetic! I have found a internet soulmate for sure ahaha
Haha kindred spirits! Amazing!
Another source of inspiration for small apartments are European and East European/Russian apartments. Let’s face it, many are almost suffocatingly small. And let’s not forget Japanese apartments, which make European apartments look spacious, and American studios positively palatial!
Just can’t live in such small spaces . I will suffer from cluster phobic add to the mix you have a cat-:)
Regarding as you say “your horrible shower doors”. You could hang a really nice curtain rod or large piece of fabric on an extension rod to cover it.
What about the kitchen?
Had a studio back in the day super inexpensive in building Landry underground parking gym in common center it was pretty ok 👍
I like the idea of keeping a small bistro table as an accent on the side butttt…where do the chairs go in the meantime? Lol
I fit everything in my 441 sq ft studio: living room area with coffee table and tv stand, bedroom area with queen size bed, art studio area, reading nook area and dining area with a small dining table. That’s all in the main space and then there’s a separate kitchen and bathroom
Wow, i'd love to see the layout. Maybe do a floor-plan sketch or actual pics and put them up on Imgur and share the link with us... I'm about to move into a 400 sq (and I do mean 'square'!) foot nyc studio (separate kitchen, thankfully!). I'm trying to incorporate as many areas as possible (like you) and am very curious to see how others do it well! Let me know if you do post anything!
Amazing, Stephanie! Sounds a lot like what I've been able to do it my studio! A lot of people would be surprised by just how much you can do within a studio. 😊
That's awesome, welcome to studio life! If you want some more ideas on arranging a studio, you might find this video of mine helpful >>> ua-cam.com/video/jtU3TsjtZhs/v-deo.html
maybe I need an abnormal coffee table...
your korok plushie from loz for the win
You reminded me when I was in college and in my dorm room that was all the space that I had and I did all what you suggested to make space more efficient and utilize it to the max. Now I have a medium sized home and still use some of these suggestions to save on space.
Its a really cute place and a sneaky (but fun) way to give us a tour of it.
I don't see your kitchen in your video 😞
I think I need a ct…
I have a 2BR, but the great room was such a weird space that I decided to get rid of my dining table and either eat on the coffee table (which has a pop-up top) or at the kitchen bar.
Perfect examples of how you don't need a dining table in order to dine well!
Hi this is Marie
Great tips.
Love your studio apartment style and tips. Vibrant color choices as well and stuttle. Looks like home 🏡
Thank you so much, Jacqueline!
I’m so looking forward to seeing you do other spaces utilizing your unique aesthetic.
Thank you so much! I have a video of my styling work on my boyfriend's studio apartment coming out very soon, so stay tuned for that! 😊
Love your ideas!
At some point you will need to leave the studio and makeover other people's spaces.
i guess she is not into intentional eating also why such a big bed when you are one person in a space. Not into her space planning ideas at all.
Sorry...but once you said indecent language I had to leave..that was so disrespectful to your audience..I realize that today most people lack values and morals when it comes to obscenities, but I was raised with old fashioned values from a single mother who instilled in us to always be respectful..it is a big deal..end of story
Fuc, feels bad
