- Four miles, 27 fences - and the finest of margins at the finish in a Coral Scottish Grand National that will live long in the memory!
Macdermott, the lightly-raced novice from the all-conquering Willie Mullins stable, was as short as 4/1 earlier in the week for the £200,000 highlight and biggest race in Scotland but was returned at a remaarkable 18/1 after a memorable triumph under Danny Mullins from brave runner-up Surrey Quest.
The first Irish-trained winner of the Scottish Grand National since the Victoria era, this success effectively allowed Willie Mullins to put one hand on the British trainers' title, with the 17-time Irish champion taking him over £130,000 of the total prize fund after also saddling the fourth, fifth and sixth home in Klarc Kent, Ontheropes and Spanish Harlem.
Defending title holder Paul Nicholls and Dan Skelton are still in the hunt for the trainers' title, but Mullins is firmly in the driving seat now after a brilliant four-timer on the day at Ayr as the modern training great bids to emulate the great Vincent O'Brien by becoming an Irish-based champion jumps trainer in Britain, and 70 years on.

Great calm ride by danny you could tell macdermot was keen and wanted to go nice ride and what can we say about willie and closutton well i think it's safe to say he has the game tied up and he's in peak. So much to look forward to at the end of the month too in punchestown. Good season.

Congrats to Willie , the trainers title is in the bag. Nicholas will be raging as he never saw this coming. He can’t complain as he had no grade one wins at Cheltenham or Aintree and over the season he only had two grade one wins.

Mullins had 6 runners all different owners all entitled to there go if they want it mad is a genius look at the stats the amount of runners hes had in England compared 2 the rest he just wants the big moneys money 💰

Agreed and it's no certainty that he'd have won the Welsh national . His supposed hot shot in the Irish derby Nick Rockett sent off at the ridiculous odds of 4-1 ran abysmally.

When trainers start to have half the field and in some cases more, there is something wrong and unhealthy about horse racing ... its time to limit the number of runners a stable can have in one race, this will result in owners sending their horses to a wider spread of trainers and the sport will be far more healthy for it ... healthy competition is good for the industry, domination by attrition and numbers is not ... There is no doubt that P Mullins is an excellent trainer, but the sport must be bigger than one trainer
Fully agree but is seems in gb there's a short supply of national hunt horses a lot of races 3 or 4 runners where as in Ireland there's always decent fields
@@noelfleming3567 ... probably because there are less meetings in Ireland and to many in the UK ... if trainers can only run a certain amount of runners in a single race, the owners will be forced to spread their horses across a lot more trainers and racing will benefit ... I'm not against Mullins, he is only doing what he is allowed to do and anyone else would do the same given the opportunity, but its not healthy for racing and the authorities need to step in and change the rules

About time they limited stable entries in the Scottish National and the Grand National to Two per stable. Ffs give some others a chance.
So let some mediocre horses run just for the fun of it? Would mean lots of horses running from outside the handicap, doesn't seem like too clever an idea. It's up to other trainers/owners to step up and identify better horses than they are presently.
@@frankelforever14 ... that would not happen ... if trainers were limited to the number of horses they can run in a single race, then owners would spread there horses across more trainers ... The fields would still have the best horses but there would be a bigger range of trainers ... in short some of the horses that mullins has would be placed with different trainers

@@jeanlawley6483in theory it makes some sense but in reality it wouldn't work. Take this winner for example, half his runs were over 2 miles for whatever reason, but he looked like he wanted a trip. First try over 3 miles he wasn't stopping so connections try the marathon trip. With your idea Mullins would probably not have been able to run him, how is that fair on his owners who thought they had a 2-3 mile chaser but turned out they had a 3+ mile chaser?
