Well said. I accept the issues that come with racing because nothing is without risk, especially when you are dealing with a sport that works with half a tonne of animal on little legs. I also understand how well these animal athletes are looked after. By the way, I accept the risk to jockeys too, because as much as we accept horses falling, we should remember jockeys are injured too, sometimes in ways that change their lives. All that said, no one wants to see horses injuring themselves or worse if it can be prevented. Nothing will eliminate all risk, but I think if obvious risks can be reduced it’s better. We live in a world where the ‘ban it and abolish it’ crew have a lot to say, and each time horses die in the National their voices get louder. They conveniently forget other race meetings and other sports where there is risk to people as well as animals. I think if the National is to survive it has to move on and adapt. In the 19th century one of the fences was a brick wall. That doesn’t exist now and the race survives. I bet people said then the race was being changed too much too, but if we want to keep the spectacle of the National, man and beast working together to try to win the ultimate contest, it must evolve, or the race will go and the snowflakes in society will have won and they won’t consider what happens to those incredible animals, bred to race and win.

@SW2799 I think all the Grand Nationals of the past sixty years or so are on UA-cam. For a treat, look up "Red Rum"... The National Hunt is a totally different kind of racing than the dirt-track flat racing in the US. The horses start older, and have long careers, with some racing to 12 or 13 years of age. Flat races are called "bumpers", then there are hurdles over shorter distances (~ 2 miles) and jumps, and then there are steeplechases, of which the Grand National is the most extreme (2-4 miles). The US "Triple Crown" carries to an extreme the Classic tradition (for three year olds), with the more successful colts being retired to stud at the end of their three-year-old season, unlike racing in countries such as Australia, where the most famous and richest races are for stayers (1.5 - 2 miles), though middle distance racers and sprinters have made great careers, too (e.g. Winx ).
If a horse is pulled up shouldn't the punter get their money back or some of it back. It means the horse wasn't trained probably and it's not fair on the punter.
@@Zarkava8 Wouldn't expect a bookie to say anything else. When a horse is pulled up there should be a investigation by steward and if steward are not happy why the horse is pulled up the punter should get their money back bookies have it to easy.

He hadn't.Can you imagine Red Rum on this course now. What a destruction of a once great yearly spectacle.Thank goodness we can still watch the old races when it truly was GRAND.Disgraceful.
It was a much more professional grand national without the absurdly priced hazards removed from the race. The race is still a test of stamina and the handicapper gave a lot more horses their chance to shine. What would be interesting to know was the race faster than before.
I was on I am maximus I cannot believe the clear ground paul was left with on that inside rail him and jack too.. Absolute open ground all the way home left with all that good clear ground and covered so much less Class by townend, ridden easy, midway, inside rail, switched off, push button.. that horse could of ran around it again. On another note i warned people on youtube not to back rambler because well you seen it.... Jack kennedy with another great race same with blackmore jack ran so well today so did paul.
The pros were saying it would race wide due to its tendency to jump left which made no sense to me. I thought ( and ime no pro ) going to the rail might help it jump straight. I just thought it was common sense.
Yup, they've made it a lot easier for health & safety - no doubt next year they'll look at the fact that two or three horses didn't make it round & drop the height of the fences another foot...& everybody will get a prize.
To those people saying the Grand National has been diminished by the changes, I would like to say, that it has to change in order to survive. People no longer wish to see horses dying or jockeys being hurt. Today was a change for the better, and I never thought I’d hear myself saying that, but it’s true
Well said. you have articulated it very well. There were no fallers and some really decent horses were in with a chance of winning. If there had not been the historical modications, I feel the GN would have been banned. Anyone who doubts me, please look again at the 1987 horrific fall of Dark Ivy just to name one; there were many more including two Gold Cup winner. So they all jumped Bechers yesterday - bloody good job too. Wonderful sight to see bold jumping horses sail over what used to be a nasty, trappy and very dangerous jump that caught out some quality horses over the years and ended their lives - we owe them more than that, so I am very pleased it was a safer race. "I am Maximus" is very classy horse , and next year he is being aimed the Gd Cup.
I watched some terrifying footage of Pathe news of the National in the 1920's. Bechers was HUGE. Great yawning ditch and it looked twice the height of today. Many horses died going over old Bechers.
@rohansrider Corach Rambler fell pretty roughly at the second after unseating rider at the first but walked to the rail and is doing fine this morning per trainer!
Embrace the changes if you like, but it's time then to accept that its now just an ordinary race, less runners, shorter distance, fences are now more like hurdles, there's nothing special about it now. It should be called the 4.00 at Aintree.
@@BertSmithLondon I don’t see The Chair as being like a hurdle;,it is still a very formidable fence. The most signifiant change is to Bechers. That huge drop has gone and also the ditch has been filled in; it was a horrible death trap if a horse and jockey misjudged it: remember Alverton? If anything Valentine’s is the bigger jump. Another good thing is no fallers means good horses are not brought down and often badly injured.
As a National Hunt fan for over 50 years this was a sad spectacle. Over 20 horses of the 32 runners grouped up as they turned in ready for the sprint to the line...wt.. Even more sad was AP and Ruby saying how this is the proper way The National should be run!! The P C brigade win, again!!
Welcome to the Animal Rights Grand National. Zero fallers, 4 unseated, 7 pulled up, and the remaining 21 runners all huddled together as they turned into the home straight. An inevitable consequence of the horses getting stronger while the fences are being made easier for them to jump. Nothing special about this race anymore, so it's the last one I'll be watching.
Still looked like a Grand National to me! I hope you are right about horses getting stronger, because there has been much concern about thoroughbreds being bred for early speed and breaking down more often, especially in the US.

Just like Humans- Never judge a Horse by how they walk or run! I liked this Horse and felt he had the best form, but I was put off by His style of running, His legs go SIDE to SIDE, like a windmill. I felt he'd fall early. I guess now the fences are nowhere as demanding as before he got away with it!
Mr. Mullins has too much affluence over J. P. and Munir and Souede, insisting Townend rides their horses and not retained jockeys. Walsh and Jacob should go freelance. Walsh had no choice, even though we were told he had. Rides a J. P. horse at Downpatrick for peanuts.
Willie Mullins had only 9 runners in this years event out of 32. So over a quarter of the field. It’s ridiculous the amount of Irish runners in the English National. It should be limited to 2 horses per stable and no more than a third of the runners should be from Ireland. This year they had about 25 of the 32 runners. This event has been spoilt by the number of Irish runners.

@@ajb6243 I believe you are right!
....a couple of unseated riders..the GN executive will certainly be looking at that.!!😊
I think more finished than started - The jockey club will be happy
wow, the winner responded to that first crack of the whip. What an exceptional turn of foot after 4 miles.
I will only be picking amongst the favourites in future, without falls and the carnage thst comes with the harder course the race favourites will almost certainly always win
great race
I love the grand national it has been really good to me I have had the winner the last 4 years in a row tiger roll twice corrich rambler last year and iam maximis going for 5 in a row next next year
mine was noble yeats. well he got round it. like the poet was riding him, man..
I backed him this year and last year.
I Am Maximus Is The 2024 Grand National Champion For The Legendary Trainer, Mr Willie Mullins!! Great Job!!❤😊!!
I remember I'm maximus. Won a race in Ireland about 5 horses ran in it. I'm maximus was 16/1: it won Irish national last year
This has Willie Mullins written all over it
The horse looked like he had barely been in a race at the end.
He hadn't.Can you imagine Red Rum on this course now. What a destruction of a once great yearly spectacle.Thank goodness we can still watch the old races when it truly was GRAND.Disgraceful.
Not a spectacle anymore , health and safety got their way !
It was a much more professional grand national without the absurdly priced hazards removed from the race. The race is still a test of stamina and the handicapper gave a lot more horses their chance to shine. What would be interesting to know was the race faster than before.
24 seconds slower than standard because of the going
You can no longer compare the times against previous years as they run 200 yards less due to them moving the start further away from the grandstand.
My horse was in contention until the last fence. How does that happen ???
Were the fences 2 feet lower and made of cotton this year?
The whole reason I wanted to watch it was because I didn't know the result yet the thumbnail is the winner on the front.
I was on I am maximus I cannot believe the clear ground paul was left with on that inside rail him and jack too..
Absolute open ground all the way home left with all that good clear ground and covered so much less
Class by townend, ridden easy, midway, inside rail, switched off, push button.. that horse could of ran around it again.
On another note i warned people on youtube not to back rambler because well you seen it....
Jack kennedy with another great race same with blackmore jack ran so well today so did paul.
he could of ran around that track again
The pros were saying it would race wide due to its tendency to jump left which made no sense to me. I thought ( and ime no pro ) going to the rail might help it jump straight. I just thought it was common sense.
Is it just me or were there not more complicated jumps previously?
They have changed it.
Fantastica corsa❤
Great race by the "loose horse" that lead near the end.
Superb jockeyship from Townend. Plotted the perfect course.
This is my first year betting for the grand national and I won 🏆
The name says it all ha! Well done
Great race, thank you Maximus for winning me £25 - I love you!!❤❤
sounds better when you can hear the announcer echo of the stands, its to clear as is, like dorks trying to impress themselves
What a horse ⚔️
Backed him 😎👌
Does anyone know the second commentator's name?.
As a National Hunt fan for over 50 years this was a sad spectacle. Over 20 horses of the 32 runners grouped up as they turned in ready for the sprint to the line...wt.. Even more sad was AP and Ruby saying how this is the proper way The National should be run!! The P C brigade win, again!!
the horse didn't need nor deserve the whips he got in the last seconds of the race
Agree. Should be banned.horse already doing its best.
@@melgrant7404 Agree. Unnecessary for horses to be beaten to death in order to win. Let's see horses win on their natural ability.
Looking back the next day look at the many of them jumped all the fences it's near like a French flat race
Has one of the more beautiful faces in all of Disney

Generally speaking
Welcome to the Animal Rights Grand National. Zero fallers, 4 unseated, 7 pulled up, and the remaining 21 runners all huddled together as they turned into the home straight. An inevitable consequence of the horses getting stronger while the fences are being made easier for them to jump. Nothing special about this race anymore, so it's the last one I'll be watching.
Good!
Still looked like a Grand National to me! I hope you are right about horses getting stronger, because there has been much concern about thoroughbreds being bred for early speed and breaking down more often, especially in the US.
@@awuma You obviously haven't watched that many Grand Nationals if you found this one entertaining. For genuine excitement. may I recommend you watch some Grand Nationals from the 1970s. They're all on UA-cam.
I've just re-watched all the Nationals with Red Rum. They are still powerful enough to makee cry
The race now is not worthy of his memory 😢
I believe that Red Rum ran about 100 steeplechases and never fell, unseating his rider once.
I backed it
Brilliant owl race my sister was on minella indo
I was walking up to the paddy Power bookies and going "everytime I go into this bookies I win "
Knew it was winning
Should be a stewards enquiry used the whipped the horse I maximus over 25 times . Should be disqualified rules state on use the whip 7 times
Showing the whip to the horse maybe?
Agree. The riderless horse who came second wasn't needing any whipping to finish as well as it did.
Ban them.
seems like the riderless horse should get a prize for sticking it out and finishing so close to the front
It's just another ordinary race nowadays
At least this year no horse died in the national.
@@melgrant7404Wrong, 2 horses died on friday.

A great race but that wasn't a grand national but a good winner thought minella Indo had it jumping the last but just got outstayed
Insane seeing the horses with no riders keep going in the race, one of them almost won the race! Insane
Brilliant horse
Joke now this race. Just an ordinary handicap chase
The winning horse only took 30 seconds from the last to the winning post a record time
That is a phenomenal race …. Anyone’s to the last and I AM MAXIMUS coming from nowhere …. A race for the ages …👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 🟩🟨🟩🟨⬜️

It's interesting to compare this footage with past ones, for instance the 1955, which had a similar number of starters, 30, and was also made milder - [from the commentary:] "...several jumps have been made less dangerous this year, and because of the heavy going the water jump is completely abandoned":

Different horses, different people.
"Are You Not Entertained"
Great win for Maxie, but there is only one Grand National horse Red Rum. Entered the National 5 times, won it 3 times and came 2nd twice. Only a small horse, and over the real fences of the 70's, and not these horse friendly ones of today.
They've changed everything about the race, so it's time to change the name too. In future it should be called The 4.00 at Aintree.
Rest 😢 Royal daddy

does that cool horse without the jockey that finished proper 2nd get any prizes?
On the mound
Sad times when the cross country race at Cheltenham is a better spectacle than the Grand National.
And that was Tiger Roll's specialty, too!
No fallers unseated only. The national is easy now.Watched my first in 67 just watched my last. Its crap now.
So you're not watching again because there were no fallers 🤣🤣🤣

It was ITV not 'the beeb'
Another clueless comment from a once a year betting 'fan' 🙄
rum rum best national horse 3 times winner when the fences were a lot bigger when rummy was winning this race rum rum your a star
Why do they let the unmanned horses keep running?
They choose to carry on through fear of getting battered with that whip.
Natural Herding Instinct. !!!
I said about a month before this race if mullins puts townend on maximoo theres no beating him !
It’s just not the National anymore sadly. 🤔🙏🏻🙏🏻
Mr. Mullins has too much affluence over J. P. and Munir and Souede, insisting Townend rides their horses and not retained jockeys. Walsh and Jacob should go freelance. Walsh had no choice, even though we were told he had. Rides a J. P. horse at Downpatrick for peanuts.
Well that was a tedious bore to watch...won't be watching the "highlights" !
Not the same race beechers brook used to be a challenge not now sad but true look at the old races real bravery red rum greatest of all time
Willie Mullins had only 9 runners in this years event out of 32. So over a quarter of the field. It’s ridiculous the amount of Irish runners in the English National. It should be limited to 2 horses per stable and no more than a third of the runners should be from Ireland. This year they had about 25 of the 32 runners. This event has been spoilt by the number of Irish runners.
How has it been spoilt?
Another brain dead comment from a once a year 'fan'
So please, oh clever one, help the the brain dead and unpack how precisely it was "spoilt"?@@Martin.Lewis..
@@Martin.Lewis.. I watch racing day in day out and the enormity of Irish runners, mostly from the Mullins and Elliot stables make these top race winners an inevitability. Too many Irish entries from the same stables.
