Splitting this into a couple parts, let me know what you like to use to record drums!
Very useful video. I usually record with my Roland TD-12 electric kit but I do wanna set up live drums at the new place I'm moving to and this video gave me some good insight on mic placement for live drums.
My son’s kit is ridiculous: 6 Tom’s (4 rack, two floor), snare, two kicks, two hats, and a large array of cymbals. I’ve been experimenting with various ways to capture it and get good sounds in our garage (where else?) jam space. Too much fun, but a couple of things I’ve settled on: Kelly Shu drum mic hangers with dynamic kick mics on the beater inside the kicks, plus a PZM in each. Massive kick sound blended together and a very clean appearance outside. The PZM captures all that resonance of the shell giving all that pillowy vibe and phat bottoms, while the beater mics capture the punch. They sit beautifully in-phase. Straight up, a great kick sound doing bugger-all else, although I usually carve away a bit of prominence in the lower mids, and hi-pass the beater mics to taste when blending. No eq boost needed anywhere.
Love that!
Your toms sound killer, great overall but the toms, are just butter!!!
Dude that track at the beginning is KILLER
Done THAT’S what I’m talking about! Some good old rock drums!
Hi Andrew the drums sound great
Did I miss something? Are you not going through the Warm 73s? From heading into a heatwave Ireland! ☘️💪🏽👀👍🏽☘️
12 channels of warm 73s!
Sounds great thanks for sharing 👌🏼looking forward to part two
Dang, those drums sound good! I'm excited to hear the isolated mics in the next vid. I've found mic placement to be absolutely critical in my stupidly small and boxy room. Getting creative with overheads has helped a lot with getting a good, even sound. Hoping to have the new studio built by the end of August, beginning of September. As always, thanks for sharing your process!
Congrats dude.
Thanks!
Keen for part 2!
That sounds so good, well done!
this videos are so good, I really enjoy watching them!
thank you!
Love this dude!! Sounded so good 😍Just earned a sub :)
Thanks!
Sounds amazing!
YES! Been looking forward to a video like this from you for a while. I get that it's pretty in the weeds, but I would love to see preamp settings you used with which mics and if you did any eq or compression on anything going in.
Even though you can't hear the air conditioner on your raw tracks, chances are your mics are picking up ultra low frequency noise from it. Which, of course, will be amplified by compressors that you use on the drums. It's pretty easy to check this if you put an EQ that has a frequency analyzer after the compressors. I've learned this the hard way...
Love these styles of your videos! thanks
Haha dude The garage door feels like an earthquake in my studio too. Big drums man!
Haha it’s always a shock
Oooooh that sounded great to me. Can't wait for the next video.
Damn that new WA 47F sounds gooood. Great video as always man. Hello from New Zealand!
Thank you! Yeah I love this thing
Dude what are those hihats? So crispy!
Istanbul Agop XIST 15" hats
broooo this is sick
nice swang feel man, you must give a backround of your drumming carrer and how you manage your time between engineering and drumming
🏆 nice… acoustically too!
This is the type of video I will pre-like :)
Ok, so here come the thoughts and questions! What are the "perfect" size drums for recording? "Perfect" wood that the drums are made out of for recording? Cymbals? Types, thickness, sizes that are "perfect" for recording? "Perfect" snare drum for recording...size, material it's made out of, etc. I found the smaller drums and thinner and smaller cymbals to be more "effective" than the larger. Then again, it would depend on the studio, mics, etc.
Yes yes and more yes. This is my kind of video. thank you. Also was the Kick In mic pointed to the side (like 90 degrees from beater)?
Thanks, pointed directly at the beater
cool video man. so i have a d112 so i thought i would try it. you are right it has a lot of mid focus. but i had to put back my SE V-KICK. Have you tried it? the d112 is cool and a classic. but this SE mic inside not only has great attack but also that bottom end thump. almost dont need an outside mic. it blends great with the rooms as well. just thought i would share.
Thanks for the video! Are there any phase or other problems with overheads? They have figure 8 pattern and pretty different distance from the ceiling so they should sound a bit different because of the reflected sound.
Nah the overheads are my favorite, totally in phase with one another, and with the close mics on the drums.
Man, miss having a space where I could setup and record drums. Sounds absolutely beefy 😤
Thanks dude
yes. :)
Hi Andrew!
Quick question… how do you send monitoring channels to your P16?
Thanks! Awesome video as always! 🤘🏻
I send them from channel sends inside of pro tools. The sends output via line outs from my interface.
First one here
Another great video! Question, what is your cable system to run the mics to the Pres? Are you using a snake?
I have a 16 channel stage box and an 8 channel stage box on opposite sides of the room that run to my patchbay.
@@AndrewMasters thanks for the feedback!
Any hi pass or gate applied as the signal goes in? Sounds so clean
Bass drum mic'ing question. I noticed you didn't mic at the sound hole. Is there a plosive that comes from there or just a better sound over all when away from the sound hole? Thanks!
Hey i’m à newbie, and i have à question when you record drums.. you put 2 mics on you’re snare, but how do you only record the snare sound without hearing the kick, the hats…etc
Can u show in part 2 the different mics in solo?
Yeah buddy!
2k tom mics make me depressed. Thats more than I paid for any of my 8 sets. Cymbals sound fantastic here.
Speaking of heating and cooling, I also live in a hot climate. Is a ceiling fan in a room enough to be a problem for ribbon overheads? My AC is nice and quiet, but I worry about the breeze from the ceiling fan stretching out the ribbons.
Fans are a scourge for sound, especially for any mic in its blast radius. I deal with fans a fair bit and the effects on the sound is ... nasty. Ribbons are sensitive and I suspect you'll be switching fans off before takes in the near future! Try it both ways and see how you go.
What do you think about the 47 vs the sub kick on the kick?
Kind of depends on the style of the track, but I’m favoring the 47 right now. Using it all the time.
@@AndrewMasters Yeah i have a sub kick i built and its great for what it is, was just wondering if that 47 would be better. I also have a fet 47 jr I am using too. Just upgrading and added a x8p to the setup too. So 20 channels =) but really you kinda use a lot of the same stuff i gravitate towards so i appreciate the feed back. Hope all is well dude.
What happened to your AEA R88?
Sold it 3 years ago, I got a pair of N8s (same mic but in two separate bodies)
@@AndrewMasters Because of it's unwieldily size? Or just for more control over placement?
Thoughts on a RE 20 for the outside vs your WA 47?
I don't have an RE-20 but my answer is usually consistent. It depends on the song.
@@AndrewMasters thanks
Are you doing sends to the p16 in your daw for any specific reason? I’m sending them Adat out of console…..
My inputs are on my x16 and my adat sends are on my x8p so I output them via pt.
@@AndrewMasters ah, I understand.
That thumbnail.....
deafening. overhead. calm down, you're already a professional
Those drums are sooo sexy 😍
