When I was 12 I found a peice of car tail light. I showed my uncle as a joke he owned mines all over. Ended up being a 8 carat ruby and I was hooked on mining forever.
I'm a rockhound living in the Nantahala Lake area and I really enjoyed your video. (I've been horseback riding in the Chunky Gal area.) I'm so glad to see that I'm not the only one that uses ziplock bags to collect rocks.
One of my favorite spots! Also Herbert Mine, Hart cut, corundum knob, Big Shaft Mine, Buck creek. Also Zoisite branch can be productive. I find some gold over on the Tennessee side. I have found some gold in the upper stretches of Buck creek and also a little in Zoisite branch. Thanks for posting!
Im in North Carolina now and over the last few weeks ive done ripped all my pockets cuz of shoving rocks in them lol. All kinds of pretty stuff just laying around. The most colorful ground ive seen so far tho is Michigan. Over 4 days i brought probably 200lbs of rocks home. It was like walking on rainbows out there.
I mine sapphies in montana ...been doing it for about 10 yrs ..I have over 80+ carats of jeweled stones and about 100 cts of rough facetable..they come in all colors...yellows greens blues purple reds pinks etc
Fun! Just went to the Emerald Hollow mine to do this with the kids. Love the smokies. I'm sure ya'll know your way around up there better than I would, but would love to get out and explore. Very cool.
Smaragdite, the green rock at Chunky Gal, is Oyroxenite Amphibolite with Chlorite and Talc. Most of the big boulders are gone now! They are saying not to smash them anymore! I work at the Rose Creek Mine in Franklin, identifying gemstones and minerals! Come by and dig your own buckets from our licensed Star Garnet Mine that’s been in business for 72 years.
At 15:35 minutes into the presentation, a finger points to what looks like some sort of crystal terminations covered in dirt, I hope someone had a closer look.
My grandfather got me interested in stones when I was younger. He passed and I've gotten into looking for them as a hobby. I wish I had more time with him to have all the knowledge he had but I would consider myself a novice. I still have a hard time with telling the difference between quartz and some of these other gems, especially when the color is similar. I found something today that looks very much like blood quartz or rose quartz but is significantly heavier then it's counterparts. I'm having a hard time with it lol
Really informative and stayed interested the entire video even though they didn’t find much of anything. Really enjoyed it and learned some things along the way.
This is the kind of place I'm looking to go this summer. I'm 68, and its on my bucket list! This summer I'll have 3 weeks off from my job, and I think I could still drive this far from Philadelphia, and can still hike. Beautiful area, some shade, not a tourist trap. Anywhere nearby to camp?
I think you'll probably find that the mystery striated greenish white material is a type of serpentine called Antigorite, and the small black mineral is Spinel, both of which are common in these similar WNC corundum locations. I have found big pieces at Buck Creek and the old Carter Mine in Madison County, and both are easily identified by a hardness test.
My mom lives in Franklin NC, right off of Highlands Rd. This past October my kids and I went to visit, and while my 11 yr old son was walking around on her property, he found a rock that looked like gravel to me, but then I saw glints of a dark pinkish red in it! I have to find a gemologist out here in New Jersey to tell me if it does have rubies in it and if they're worth anything. If there's a way, I can email you a picture of it. My mom mentioned that she has the mining rights to her property, so I told her it might be worth it to get out there and see what she can find! She is 75 yrs old, so...Thank you for this informative video. I sure hope that you guys have some form of gun, machete or something, just incase you run into any wild life, or a bigfoot! P.S. My mom also had/has one of those X tree limb formations in her backyard, just like bigfoots are supposed to do. One time when she was planting flowers in her backyard, she got tired and left one for the next day. When she went out there to plant it the next day, it was gone, but she found a marble on top of the dirt right by her back steps. She also found a marble one other time, on top of the dirt by her mailbox, which is by the street and probably about 60 or 70 feet away from where the other marble was found. Something also hit the back of her house one time. I think it's pretty interesting :)
Hi! Just got into the whole rockhounding thing. I saw that you were going to possibly look for a gemologist in NJ, and I happen to also live here in Jersey too! 🤝😃 Was curious if you ever ended up finding anyone? If so, would def be interested to know! Thanks ✌🏼☺️
Those white pieces you weren't sure about look like they are in the amphibole family, I wouldn't suggest dry curring or sanding it without precaution... asbestos is some magical shit until it's not.
you guys are awesome! i just moved close to Troy, NC and I'm looking for treasure hunting pals. seems like i won't have any problem finding people! thanks, great video!
Just left this area! Decided to watch videos on the ride home. I do lapidary and staring to facet stones. I saw the guitars. I play too! I thought we would probably all get along! 😂😂😂 I usually just watch but had to comment on such a great video.
We found a small emerald here in Madison County NC I may end up saling it. I took it to a few jewelry stores and gold n silver shops to have em look at it ect and I got a few big offers for it. So there is Def emeralds up here. And alot of gold and silver as well
That interesting pile of dirt with rocks perched on top isn’t natural! Cat Eye Cut is a favorite spot and someone had dug dirt and rocks from the creek and it rained uncovering some rocks. Sign of a Rockhound! We went the other night with our big UV lights and found lots of Rubies in Smaragdite.
Cool video dudes...Never found any gemstones other than different color garnets you really never know what you'll get for sure. I go for the gold and get the other cool minerals in the process.
Was anyone else tilting their head to try and see what he was looking at while we were looking at his feet? 😂 orange is my favorite color and I really wanted to see it.
A real rock hounding video finding real stones from a real documented historical locality. I get so tired of seeing these Russian and Asian mining videos showing people pull out pounds of gold or valuable gemstones every time they go out. It just doesn't work like that. I only follow and watch videos like this who actually find real stones even if it they aren't of considerable value at least they are real and are from places that I can possible go myself and dig!
That looks like a piece of petrified wood to me..I used to think it all was like the beautiful colorful stuff you find out in Petrified Forest National Park...but I've got a buddy here in SE Kentucky that has given me several pieces he has found while out Ginsenging and most of them look like that one you found, but also some darker and slicker ones.
That's all feldspar. Sometimes it occurs mostly clear. Like that, if its not too cracked and can be made into a cabachon, you will have a low grade monotone. Feldspar is very common in pegmatite dikes.
Yall are hilarious had me cracking up checking the windshield wipers. Some really cool rough corundum you were showing. Good cab material and specimen material. Ever find stuff that's facetable?
Not tried a Saruca...but i once made a cylinder with like a wire mesh and plastic ends that are used in Plumbing. I made a base for it to be rotated (like a large open air rock tumbler). It worked well but was big and a pain to pack in and out...
Rusty my guy, I was hoping maybe u had some contact info. I live in Hiawassee and have been to the same site many times but I can't find Cat Eye Cut plz help
I like that gem identification light you used in the video. What is that rectangular shaped light called? Where did you buy it? It’s very small and easy to carry around. Thank you!
I like it boys✊. Ima watch it! Now he needs to BURN that hoodie ol' peaches .. aggressively! 😂 Hey u have some nice examples there anyway at the beginning there. Really cool man!👋
If they are pink then it's a sapphire and not ruby, ruby is red! If you come to Australia I can take you out to reach good areas for gem quality sapphires and rubies once I have a new 4wd and caravan/trailer. We tend to prospect for around three months of a year while camping where we are looking.
To my knowledge, there are no laws prohibiting collecting rocks on national forest lands by surface collecting. Use of powered equipment is prohibited. Harvesting of protected plants like ginseng is illegal …but not rocks

Man those are some awesome stones! Did you find those all at Chunky gal and the cats eye cut? I've been to Chunky gal before and didn't find anything as good as that!
I bought land up there to dig in but I’m Afraid to go alone because of bears. I LOVE TO DIG!!! I want to go to my land so much that I bought almost three years ago. Haven’t even been on it yet
