My Grandfather, Herbert Wilson with Grandmother Ethel were one of Coober Pedys Pioneers. Grandad in the 50's, found a giant piece that made it to World status called the Australis Olympus. Just discovered this channel today, this makes mining look like so much fun. I'm sure there's a ton of really hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make these videos but man what a rush. It's a modern day treasure hunt!
Yes & NO - just like any "tunnelling work" - being down an opal mine with loose rock/scree left, right, & directly overhead, some of the shafts are death traps. One of my high school friends, who went to the WA opal fields, is still somewhere under a pile of scree. In other words - he suffered a cave-in & it killed him. Probably only in his mid 20's.
I love Opal, this show is so amazing and I love the whole bunch of the Aussie crews. They're so fun and I love that Aussie get up and go plus that fantastic accent. You all Rock, get it 😄😂
Opal falls 😃 and fast wheel change. Glad to see you're having a good run of finds. I have just started my opal obsession journey, I would be too scared to cut and polish stones that good yet. Fantastic work young guns.

Opals were my grandmother's birthstone, and she had a giant ring with one - it fascinated me as a kid (sadly it was stolen later). I'm in Canada, but I've traveled to the Opal mine areas in Idaho - and I really wanted to do some opal hunting while I was there! Unfortunately it didn't happen. you guys must have so much fun doing this kind of hunt! What a beautiful rock.

Bought at least a couple thousand dollars worth of Opal since I started watching OOH, some from the Blacklighters but mainly various others. Trying to support the miners plus I've always been fascinated with Opal. Love it!..and love your episodes of Young Guns. Thanks.

To the Young Guns: I saw that it's possible to make Opal Collages using black epoxy, I wanted to try my hand at recreating an art piece that my grandfather made and I was wondering if there's a way to get a large variety of opal flake and if it's expensive? I'm also looking for a lot potch flake as well. It doesn't need to be thick pieces and the more variety the better as I'm recreating a part of the solar system. I wouldn't mind talking about the piece I'm trying to recreate if you're interested. Of course I'm interested in buying the flake. Please send me a message. It's going to be a very unique and somewhat large piece and I'm sure that my grandfather would love it. If you started saving flake to sell to me directly I'd be greatly interested.

U guys r awesome i love watching all the rare n beautiful gems u find i just purchased my very own little bag of pay dirt keep the awesome job u boys do going
They left a lot of material in there, and we know they didn’t have a market for the slightly lower grade opal, This was at the bottom of around a 35 foot shaft that they would have to dig all the backfill to get unless they by chance dig into it from underneath like us

This rather reminds me of what I was doing many, many years ago. I had a grinder, two or three saws (commercially made) a couple I built (can lid blades -mud) built a faceting machine. Did some carvings. Actually made a little money! The best part of the operation was when I began buying "mine run" mail-order from "Coober Peddy" if memory serves. Half-pound bags. Lot of books probably about 2-year degree in geology & minerology. Self directed with input from a couple geology ProfsI knew. Lots of fun, but a lot headaches and "midnight oil" Thanks much. Subscribed.
How did you know to dig that hole? How did you know there were old timer tailings (is that the right word for it?) in that spot? Anyways, great job guys!! Awesome finds! Don’t worry, there’s even bigger treasure around the corner soon!
I can only assume itbwas an accident. Maybe they knew there were old digs in the area but its unlikely they knew where. Old opal miners dug around aloootttt. There are undergeound houses where they dug to expand another room in the 2000s and discovered old mine holes amd opal seams. Old timers didnt map it out, they kept it in thier head.
What type of blacklight are you guys using? And what wavelength? I found some stuff that I think is opal (just common opal, but I'm still happy since it's big chunks) but under my 365 nm Convoy C8 it fuoresces more in a very bright green, almost white color. Also, big fan of the petrified wood - love collecting that stuff myself.
You guys have given so many people opal fever, just buying rough stones off internet and using bench grinders and sand paper, works well with fire opal, cheap stuff that looks ok! Cheers guys!😊

Love your channel. We use blacklight UV flashlights to check for Amber though many organics will fluoresce, so it is not 100%. Please take care to wear the UV protective glasses (typically look yellow but also can be clear) as the UV flashlights are quite capable of causing eye damage. Steve Horii Emeritus Professor of Radiology (2021 - present) at Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania (1992-present) warns in a Quora Post " UV absorbed by the cornea and lens can cause problems. For the cornea, an acute inflammation - photokeratitis - can occur.”. Have fun, find lots of great opals, and also be aware of protecting your eyes!
Curious? You moved the kanga to the loose rock pile to move it. But you screened all the rock back onto the mine floor. Why did you not screen pile and dump debri into kanga bucket? Then it's kept separated and you don't have to pick it back up a second time. You just drive it out once complete pile has been screened.

Just came across your channel today, and watched you two, gloaming yourselves some of those beautiful stones, called Opals. My birth Stone, with my 71st coming up the end of the month. Thank you for the hours worth of fun watching you treasure hunt, with your hearts full of joy, finding gifts from the earth. I gotta tell you one treasure hunter to another. there really is no feeling quite like finding what it is your looking for . Opals , Turquoise, (( My favorite, and hiding .in my little Hat mine in Nevada's USA, Valley of Gold, Crescent Valley Nevada. Lots of Minerals, esp. Gold and Silver round about), Diamonds are nice too. But a Treasure Hunter is what we really are. So here's the Story, for all the nay Sayers of the world, who, who would Mock the likes of us, True Hunters of the Earths Treasures,
What do they call you when you tell someone, Your a Treasure Hunter, A FOOL
but, After you find your 1st Treasure, What do they call you,, A LUCKY FOOL,
but then you find your 2nd Treasure, then what do ya get called, A REALLY LUCKY FOOL
Finally ,,, when you find your Third Treasure, What do they call you then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
A MINER!
Thanks again for letting me tag along on your days ah hum Work , lol, delving into your world of Opals, also for the hints and direction for some bits of equipment I saw above. Yes the Black lights are , ah,, fantastic helpers at times. I'll be checking in with you. now and then, and keep ya posted, on what I might find, For a good tale for yourselves to look up on the net, check out the story behind, ,,
)) LANDER BLUE (( the most valuable , gram for gram of any Gemstone ever discovered, and mined, right near my little 20 acre stake , in Lander County Nevada USA, There was only about 77 pounds of it, ever found, and is the most incredible Gem quality Turquoise, ever unearthed. I know you will appreciate the Beauty of it, and the Story of it is a fun tale. With happy endings. A few works by Native American Artists can still be found for sale. But of course lots of fakes, but once you see the real deal, you'll know the difference, there is only one Lander Blue, Such a Dark Blue. it almost looks a Translucent Black, but, with the Gold Lighting Bolts and Stars, its a wonder to behold,,, . Cheers Guys, All the Best, F.J. Murph.
I mined opals at lighhtning ridge back in the 90's. This brings back some memories
Just discovered this channel today, this makes mining look like so much fun. I'm sure there's a ton of really hard work that goes on behind the scenes to make these videos but man what a rush. It's a modern day treasure hunt!
Same
Yes & NO - just like any "tunnelling work" - being down an opal mine with loose rock/scree left, right, & directly overhead, some of the shafts are death traps.
One of my high school friends, who went to the WA opal fields, is still somewhere under a pile of scree.
In other words - he suffered a cave-in & it killed him.
Probably only in his mid 20's.
Glad you found us! There’s a lot of rough moments and we sometimes share that stuff but it’s the good moments like this that make it all worthwhile!
I love Opal, this show is so amazing and I love the whole bunch of the Aussie crews. They're so fun and I love that Aussie get up and go plus that fantastic accent. You all Rock, get it 😄😂
What accent 😂 jks
WOW... POCKETS of JOY!!! MANNNN Nothing like going into a pocket and feeling around, But this one has them just flying out!
Wow amazing beautiful natural gems keep it up my friend good luck 👍👍👍👍
So fascinating to see mining methods from the best opal in the world today, i hope you can continue sharing your journeys
Bit of an old school technique but sometimes simple is best!
Opal falls 😃 and fast wheel change. Glad to see you're having a good run of finds. I have just started my opal obsession journey, I would be too scared to cut and polish stones that good yet. Fantastic work young guns.
i love EVERYTHING about this video . there is literally NOTHING i don't like . these guys are the chillist dudes. not once was i nor did I become alarmed about being in a effing MINE UNDERGROUND in the middle of australia. good times
Hahaha thank you for watching it’s a pretty chill laid back lifestyle out here!
Gday Young Guns. Thank you for the none stop viewing over the weekend. Watched all 25 videos and now have subscribe to your channel. Almost feel like a miner now as Listening to you all has been like a school room lesson. Almost think its time I donated myself to come and offer a hand working the tailings and shoveling the buckets to the top. Thanks guys for the great videos. I will keep and eye on what's to come from you all. Stay safe and happy mining.
Hahah thank you for watching our videos! It’s a heck of a lot of fun doing this job!
@@younggunsopalhunters I know its not a quick get rich job but the rewards of seeing something that's been underground for thousands of years is the reward. But there is that big payday factor in there to. Would love to spend a week in the fields and get some hands on work. Would be amazing.
So fun to watch these opal miners, such a beautiful stone! These miners are brave as well, going into mine shafts.. thank you and best of luck!
I have worn an opal for years and it’s a beautiful picture of a broken and contrite heart❤️
Best gemstone!
I love that frog now 😊. Need more frog updates and facts on the show . 🐸
We will definitely bring you all the froggy updates hahah
I love seeing you guy’s finding opal, it’s so addictive. You produce amazing content please please please keep it coming. I wish you all every success and any luck going. As another great miner says “it’s big and it’s cheesy” 👍
Have a safe and successful season ladds! Nice to see ya back!
Thank you hopefully it’s a good one!
I'm so happy your channel popped up on my feed.

Atomic frog for the win!
Good luck this season you guys. Those old timers pickings were stellar.
Thank you hopefully a good year!
Glad to see you guys keep up the hard word and posting the vids I love opal and watching people find it
Thank you for watching!
26:00 Can't HELP but wonder just HOW MANY good opal pieces you two are leaving behind this way!!!
You find some ya miss some the real money is in digging it out not going throw backfill, but if we ever need a little more diesel money we just go back to this spot and give it another go round! :) thanks for watching!
They should definitely go back and save today's tailings for round two of $1000 stones.
Great throw away finds!
@@younggunsopalhunters ?
Now I know why you are opal hunters, as you don't need to spell good.
Like?
[quoute] not going throw backfill, [unquote]
You what?
Now did you mean THROW, or through - or maybe even threw?
One is to go from one side to the other, as to go THROUGH old scree material, looking for something missed, whereas both THROW & THREW deal with the tossing of something (now 0r some time ago)
We are going to THROW a ball, but need to work THROUGH some scree.
@@QUIX4U lol why are you so mad
@@QUIX4U Are you okay dude? Don't worry about it man, it is just a word. 💀
Love it guys. More of this
Hahah thanks for watching bloody good fun! Need to find some big bits to send to you! Just need the opal gods to smile on us with something worthy to be cut by the master!
those tunnles would make the coolest home i could ever want you are so lucky !!
Good to see more content straight from the source!
It’s awesome doing our own videos hopefully many more to come!
I collected bits in the late 90s and have a few of those smooth hard stones. No color, but now I know what they are…glacial…thanks JC!
Thanks for watching!
Sure it's not just wood?
Hell yeah man it's good to see you guys back in business, looking forward to awesome season full of amazing stones!
Yes can't wait this season is gonna be rock solid 😅💎
We where counting the days till we got back! There’s lots of work ahead but we are making progress and hopefully it will be a good year!
@@younggunsopalhunters it's always a lot of work man, that's just part of the game. Looking forward to you guys finding a big cheesy seam that launches you guys to the next level!
I fell asleep while UA-cam and woke up to the sound of you guys having so much fun! 😂 what an education! I’m now a subscriber.
@@brendadavis8248 hahahah
This is one of the most exciting various I have watched in some time. Best of luck to all. Stay safe guys.😉😀❤🌹❤🌹
I'm a gold prospector but also like all treasure and I would be in my element down there in that honey hole! I could see loads more you didn't notice when you were tipping the classifier out but I'm sure you will probably go through it all once it's on the top so nothing will be lost. 👍👌❤️💛💚
What an incredible start to the new season! Your passion and hard work in searching for that elusive "big one" is truly inspiring. 🌟 The gems and fossil wood you found are amazing, and it's great to see you keeping the tradition of hand-sieving alive with the shaker table. 🔍💎
Kudos for handling the kanga loader repair so efficiently! 🛠 It's always interesting to see the different aspects of working in an opal mine.
I'd love to see more of your daily life on the opal field, perhaps showing the processes involved in cutting and polishing the gems you find. Keep up the fantastic work and best of luck in your search for the big one! Can't wait for the next episode! 😊👍 #OpalAdventure
Thanks so much for the awesome comment ! So awesome to find some gems when you don’t really expect to !
Love to hear feedback on what you want to see, we will definitely get more cutting and day to day stuff and general living in the future, all part of the process
I'm not normally given to envy, but your jobs look awesome - and the opals are amazing. Thanks for the ride, guys.
Thank you for coming along on the adventure! Best job we have ever had
It's my gmas first name Opal and her mom's name was Ruby
I love Opals! 💖 TYVM for sharing!
Hopefully your Green froggy 🐸 friend isn't poisonous! Brightest Blessings! 🤭✌️♥️🦋🙏
Happy for your good fortune, mates. Great fun watching.
Great stuff fellas! I just wish that I could see all of the Outback Opal Hunters episodes that I've missed, especially season 8. Be nice to be able to buy/rent them easily, without joining a big provider or buying Discovery etc. I don't watch TV and mainly watch youtube. Bought at least a couple thousand dollars worth of Opal since I started watching OOH, some from the Blacklighters but mainly various others. Trying to support the miners plus I've always been fascinated with Opal. Love it!..and love your episodes of Young Guns. Thanks.
You are a bloody legend hoodatman ! Good on you for buying straight from the miners and supporting the guys getting their hands dirty to find these beautiful gems
Here's to a good season boys. Guessing the new claim is surrounded by owls being called hooters. Really enjoy your videos thanks for keeping the story rolling.
Yeah mate !! Was checking out one of the big peppercorn trees on the claim when a white owl flew out in the middle of the day !
It's an extraordinary struggle that you go through with joy, I hope that what you do reaps maximum results. I like this adventure greetings from Indonesia 👌👍👍
Thanks so much legend ! We do it for the big find one day but also the lifestyle and love of it !
I'd be like a little kid at Christmas just squealing with joy!!! So cool!!
Don't know why this appeared in my viewing list but glad it did. Fascinating stuff.
Glad you enjoyed it!
To the Young Guns:
I saw that it's possible to make Opal Collages using black epoxy, I wanted to try my hand at recreating an art piece that my grandfather made and I was wondering if there's a way to get a large variety of opal flake and if it's expensive? I'm also looking for a lot potch flake as well. It doesn't need to be thick pieces and the more variety the better as I'm recreating a part of the solar system. I wouldn't mind talking about the piece I'm trying to recreate if you're interested. Of course I'm interested in buying the flake. Please send me a message. It's going to be a very unique and somewhat large piece and I'm sure that my grandfather would love it. If you started saving flake to sell to me directly I'd be greatly interested.
Hi check out our store link in description we do sell opal chips, if you need more help or have another idea send us a message on Instagram or our Facebook page we respond to all message there :)
How the heck are you guys not dusted out with all of that falling dirt and debris? There's like zero dust!!! It's amazing really!!
Moisture is my guess crystal need moisture right?
I wonder why there's zero dust. Weird haha
The CGI isnt good enough to create realistic dust clouds yet. Mine shafts tho... 👍
@@casucasueq4479 dude I didn't wanna think it but... haha

Epic channel, think you guys are trending.
Thank you for watching! The video is doing unbelievably well we are so grateful and privileged to be able to share the adventure!
Couple questions:
Why are you so excited to find bits of wood?
What do you guys do with all that "backfill"? Can you sell it as garden rocks or something?
keep it up boys! prettty cool dig and glad you shared it! chase that money!!!!
Thank you for watching hopefully next video we will be so lucky to find more gems!
Your consideration for the frogs well being got you a new subscriber.
Gotta respect the wild life that makes it home in such a harsh place ! Love our furry, feathered, scaly, slimy and spiked friends !

Hope to see you out here come say hello 👋🏻
U guys r awesome i love watching all the rare n beautiful gems u find i just purchased my very own little bag of pay dirt keep the awesome job u boys do going
Best looking waterfall I've seen , good to see you blokes onto colour and putting in the work to get the results. B-E-A UTIFUL stones too
I don't think he's missed it, us old miners would leave minerals sometimes so we can follow the veins
They left a lot of material in there, and we know they didn’t have a market for the slightly lower grade opal,
This was at the bottom of around a 35 foot shaft that they would have to dig all the backfill to get unless they by chance dig into it from underneath like us
nice find there. I wish I had the stuff those miners were tossing. Loved this video. the quality is great, the sound is great, the shots are great, the editing...man, you guys are getting better at production than mining...(almost 😉)
Keep up the good work. and thanks from all of us, especially we who cut opals. without all your hard efforts we wouldnt have these beautiful gems.
Wishing you lots of success this year.
Probably need to upgrade the main camera soon to the one we use for the close ups then the quality would be hectic! If the channel keeps going well I’ll have to invest in some better gear but glad it’s still decent enough quality for now :) thanks as always for watching mate!
Howdy from Texas! WOW. First time viewer. And after watching this video, I had to immediately subscribe.
Fantastic find, guys. Stunning colors. A true gift from the Old Timers.
I wish I was out there helping you guys pick through all that material. My wife says I have a really exceptional eye for finding treasure where least expected. Ah, who am I kidding, you guys have way too many deadly critters out there. Lol
Hahah!

Good for ya'll...I hope ya'll strike it rich and come out smiling on the other side...💯👍
Lots of fun, but a lot headaches and "midnight oil"
Thanks much. Subscribed.
Great to see you guys in action. Met Jaymin and Noah at the water treatment plant in white cliffs the other day....they're bloody legends as I thought
Hey mate! Thanks for checking out the video!
We use convoy C8 that’s the go. Should show up bright lightsaber blue
Almost white blue
Awesome work keep the 65 ct stuff coming please love your work cheers Yummo fishing Lake Macquarie
You guys have given so many people opal fever, just buying rough stones off internet and using bench grinders and sand paper, works well with fire opal, cheap stuff that looks ok! Cheers guys!😊
I’ve just discovered this!
The way that he admired the piece of wood was awesome! I think about that stuff as well.

Hi there msthylacine, thanks for the comment and all the info, we do have the yellow ones and usually use them, should have them on all the time !
Jc is a character should have a series on discovery both you guys. Living the dream for sure mates.
How can you not want a machine named "Kanga"!??😄 Made there also, win-win.
Hahahah the name is on point
All smiles and grins until he gets too greedy and the ceiling comes down too....
It's an old shaft they intend and have reopened for access . Plus his dad put him on to it . Jumping in with both feet and all that
Curious? You moved the kanga to the loose rock pile to move it. But you screened all the rock back onto the mine floor. Why did you not screen pile and dump debri into kanga bucket? Then it's kept separated and you don't have to pick it back up a second time. You just drive it out once complete pile has been screened.
Cheers from Miami
