In this video i'm going to show you how to clean out the hotend on your Ender 3 v2 or any other 3d printer that doesn't have an all metal hotend.
If you're having problems with stringing, clogs, or just keep seeing a previous colour coming through when you change filament, it's time to clean your hotend.

Had some issues with the extruder skipping with a new nozzle on. Turned out the hotend was clogged with filament even from the past owner! Thanks for the tutorial, works great now

Agreed. Great video. I like the extra step to back off the nozzle by a full turn and tighten after the Bowden tube is in place, for a tight seal.
Edit: I wrote the below before I fixed the actual blob problem. Even though the stock Teflon tube had visibly degraded after many prints at 255C, replacing it with new Capricorn tubing didn't help. It also doesn't make sense that plastic can ooze outside the nozzle. For this there is a second culprit: the joint between the brass nozzle and the steel heat break tube, inside the aluminum heat block. I removed the heat block and noticed that the bottom of the heat break tube's threaded portion (where it mates with the nozzle) was charred and somewhat degraded. This has to be clean and flat for a good seal. So I used a metal nail file to flatten and smooth this again. Minor leakage from the Bowden tube/nozzle seal should not get out past the heat break tube/nozzle seal. Evidently it was in my case and oozing past the nozzle threads in the heat block, onto the outside of the nozzle and down. Trying a test print now...
Previous text: One extra symptom of a burnt up Teflon Bowden tube to add though: I had been doing quite a few PETG prints at 255C nozzle temperature with the original Creality Teflon tube, so I had actually been expecting the tube to degrade where it meets the nozzle but the problem symptom was not what I expected. I was expecting clogs, and you mention stringing, but I was getting unexplained layer shifts and/or parts coming off the bed mid-print. This seemed to happen at random with some prints working fine. I finally figured out that this was caused by plastic oozing past on the OUTSIDE of the nozzle, where it builds up into a fairly big blob. The blob eventually comes off and adheres to the print. On the next layer, the hot end hits the hardened blob, and the impact is enough to knock the print off the bed even if bed adhesion is good. A mess of spaghetti ensues. Then I was printing some flat, thin mounting plates that cannot be knocked off the bed with sideways force because the surface area is just way too big, but I was getting layer shifts. In this case the hot end strikes the hardened blob hard enough to make stepper motors skip, resulting in misalignment. Surprisingly I didn't find evidence of these big blobs until the Teflon tube degradation got bad enough that plastic began leaking past the nozzle faster. Then I could see the plastic building up on the outside of the nozzle and coming off after enough had built up. Luckily I had Capricorn tubing ready to go and this video to gain insight from. Cheers!
Awesome info! Thank you very much! I have been struggling with stringing for weeks. I re calibrated everything! I can't wait to give this a try. Just peeking through the little hole in the side of my hot end, I can see build up. I am sure this is the cause.

I cannot even explain how many complicated things i've tried.. and how many parts i've changed.. turns out *LMAO* there was a big ol' PLA in form of a tube stuck above the nozzle, sealing the passage for new pla (HENCE the clicking sound from extruder wheels. feeder.) This video help me realize you can put whole feeding tube through the part where nozzle sits...that's why I've pulled out this chunk of PLA out...Wish I could post a pic here lmao. I'll put it on my shelf with figurines i've made as an achievement, reminder. lmao

I have an Ender 3 V2 Neo and despite the little differences, it was enough to do the whole process.
The only issue I had was that the cold filament broke inside the tube while pulling it out so I had to detach the tube from the stepper side too, and using any tool I was able to grab the little part of the filament that was still there and removed it (considering to keep the other side hot to be able to extract the nozzle side part of the tube/filament).

I have an Ender 3 and an Ender 3 V2 and neither of them were working correctly, and I was considering just trashing both of them and buying a Prusa (which I still plan on doing but I wasn't going to print anything until I got it). No other tutorial helped me, but then your method of using the bowden tube to get rid of clogs has revitalized both of my printers. Not only this video, but also the trimming guide has saved both of my printers from the trash. Seriously, you're a lifesaver :D

I have been printing with PLA for about 2 years on my Ender 3 pro, had a few issues here and there with stringing and blobs but nothing major until I recently started using PETG so I have a sneaky suspicion the nozzle is at fault. Going to be buying the upgraded tubing and give my nozzle a thorough cleaning. Thanks for the great video 😃

Excellent video, I was getting blobbing on my hot end. After watching your video I found out that it was being caused by a loose nozzle. I cleaned out the hot end, replaced the nozzle and tightened it up as per your instructions. Now my prints are working perfectly. Thank you for sharing your expertise!

This worked perfectly, i suspected my tube being bad, so i got the one you had suggested funny enough, and then replaced the hot end, but it was beading now(before it wasnt printing at all) but your trick fixed it right up

Thank you for the video. I did not think to check the center of the hot end a clog, which was my issue. Went threw 3 nozzles and 1 new Bowden tube section... Thought it was suppose to be a stop in the center so when you said to push all way down through the hot end . . . That was my issue for last 4 hours of trouble shooting. Thank you!

I wanted to do a clean just to try. Did a cold pull that broke the filament, ended up with a chunk of filament that couldn't be reached by heat and couldn't be pushed.
I have an Elegoo Neptune 3 and you can't push the bowden tube all the way through, but thanks to this video I removed the pneumatic fitting which helped me reach the blockage.

Thank you for these instructions, they worked great. I just experienced my first blockage and didn't know what to do. The only thing I would like to add is that I also had a blockage within the white tube which I couldn't clear at first. I ended up heating the tube where the blockage was using a heat gun and then used some filament to push out the blockage. That worked great.. Thanks again.
I’m so glad I came across this video, I had to change my Bowden tube as the original one was damaged but couldn’t figure out why it kept coming out of the pneumatic holder. Now I’ve ordered new nozzles and pneumatic tube so I can work on this on weekend

Super helpful and excellently explained. I had a clogged hot end with a clean nozzle and followed this video but still no filament came out. Turns out I had a kink in my filament. It went through the bowden tube smoothly to the hotend but then wouldn't go any further. So if you have the same problem just try cutting the end of your filament and try again.

My Ender 3 v2 had been clicking for some days and finally able to rid the clog from the PTFE tube thanks to your video! Hopefully that was the culprit and nothing else otherwise I'm lost because I have tried most other troubleshoots

Thanks so much for this. I was having issues where filament wasn't coming out of my Ender 3 nozzle, I changed the nozzle head and still saw no change, little did I know my hot end was clogged. I followed the steps you explained and out popped a large plastic clog. All is fine now, printing like brand new. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽😊

Thank you so much for saving my sanity. I was printing a benchy for some nostalgia and at the 6th layer, my hot end suddenly clogged. I recently had under extrusion issues, but I didn't think that this was the problem although it happened to me before.

Worked for me! Thanks! When I cleaned the nozzle and tube it looked like the filament had burnt a bit. It's white PLA, I had it at 200° and the stuff I cleaned out was brown.

Worked a charm, had a real hard time getting everything out of the nozzle tho. Had to rescrew it a few times to reheat and continue pulling clogs out.

Thanks its a Longer LK1 3D and the aluminium tube inside one element the top part it's about 50mm in length, about 20mm of that tube narrows and Bowden diameter too wide for it. So fixing Bowden into extruder top piece it only goes in approx 30mm. You cant push it all the way through as in your video. Though ive taken apart and cleaned each piece of extruder section, filament still comes out stringy. I'll need to troubleshoot it more... Not sure what's going on yet.

Turns out that i shouldn't fully tighten the nozzle until the bowden tube is in place..

I got lucky. My pla string simply broke at the feeder. I carefully cut the sting flush on both ends and manully pushed the hot end and printing again. Thank you for the helpful information.

First off thanks for this video!
It at least gave me the motivation to try and save my Ender 3 v2 Neo again, unfortunately in vain.
I managed to get the completely clogged nozzle off and clean in.
I have the original white PTFE tubing, however with nozzle completely off as stated I then cannot push the PTFE tubing all the way through to the other side like you did, even at 250°C, it just enters I'd say 1.5 to 2cm max from top.
However I managed to get a huge clogg out of the extruder using a thin steal screwdriver and could see completely through with a flashlight.
My hopes were on top, reassembled everything and the symptoms persisted, can't get it to extrude anymore and it cloggs again right after this.
This is my 2nd Ender 3 that worked perfectly well for 30 to 40 prints, then all of a sudden just needs to have a filament break or run out (which happens or will eventually happen), once it prints without filament for a while, you can forget that thing forever and it can never be revived.
I have 4 other older printers like A8 and prusa copies, etc. they still work, the quality is not as good as Ender3 but they still work.
I am sad and disappointed, and wish I was wrong about something and there'd be something I can do, but I don't want to put any more cash into this money pit-

My Bowden tube is so trash I couldn't get it to go so freely through the hotend as you, almost as if it somehow became oversized all of a sudden, since it was the one that came with my Ender 3V2 Neo. Ever since I saw the hotend on my machine and compared to the V2 (non Neo) and others, I thought it was kinda trash anyway, so I'm changing the entire hotend anyway, but following this video to the T as it is the most concise I found. I was able to clean the entire thing no problem and disassemble it down to parts I didn't even know it had. Sadly, sometimes bad quality only leaves replacement as an option for repair.

Around the time I first got my printer on maybe my 3rd print my stock extruder failed and caused the most brutal clog in existence.. ever since that day and many upgrades later I’ll get a random blackish/purple glob of goop from the same purple silk filament from the clog that will drip onto my print and ruin it.. it’s extremely frustrating when you’re 6+ hours into a print and have to restart.. thanks for this video! Need to get mine all taken apart and cleaned!

this guide was amazing thank you. I actually used a method from another video to ensure tightness though, and that was to tighten the nozzle, then fit the capricorn tube through the new fitting at the top, press it in tightly against the nozzle and fit the clip, then tighten the slightly loose fitting at the top to compress against the nozzle.
Any particular reason or downside to this method versus yours?
for me it was easier as I did not have a good way to work with the hot nozzle without burning my self, so it was easier to ensure a good fit, but interested in your thoughts.
