    Shocker as a villain who is actively afraid of being killed by the more deadly marvel heroes is actually really interesting. I wish we could get more of that! it would make him a much more compelling goon.

      Right? He's terrified but this is the only life he feels he can have. So he keeps doing it even though he could be killed.

    I always had a soft spot for shocker, even before I understood what exactly his powers were and his professional attitude towards supervillainy, something about him just kind of spoke to me.

    I do think the original Ultimate universe had a hand in giving their idea that the character was a joke as well.

    • @daviddalrymple2284
      @daviddalrymple2284 10 днів тому +2

      Yeah. In the "proper" Marvel universe, Shocker was always a B-tier villain, but he was never treated as a complete joke character like "The Legion of Losers". And his neurotic fears of super-heroes only added to his depth.

    The Superior Foes of Spider-Man is a series that many people recomend with the Shoker. Also, have you considered doing the early evolution of Scott Lang Ant Man? His character really fits this format since he had so much potencial at his early years while at the same time he only had sporadic appearences

    Unironically the best Shocked story I read was a fanfic from like a decade ago, (Had to look it up to refresh my memory, since I was like 12 when I read it)
    It was a novel length fanfic called Shocker: Legit by screenplay writer Max Landis (who also wrote the comic book Superman: American Alien)
    Poor Herman. the best shocker story is a friggin fanfic 😂

    Love me some Shocker. If I ever got to write my own version of the Shocker, I would play on the idea that he is a genius, and as such is super bored by mundane life, and thus becomes an adrenaline junkie “naturally” leading to him becoming a supervillain to tango with Spider-man.
    Also I cannot get that issue of Shocker and Scorpia working together with She-hulk in some tie in issue from War of the realms out of my head, so I always think of Shocker and Scorpia as partners in crime (and maybe more? 🤔 probably not lol)

    Great video! I’m actually a massive Shocker fan, he feels like a capital T capital R rogue for me from Flash. I love that there’s not really any personal animosity between him and Spidey. He may be a jobber, but I love that he knows when to hold them and know when to fold them. I think the PS4 game and cartoons really got that aspect of his character.

    Downside to the modern Shocker being written as a loser: Spider-Man comics lost a cool competent villain.
    Upside to the modern Shocker being written as a loser: He now stands out among Spider-Man's rogue's a little bit more.
    I'm glad somebody explored the fact that the Shocker was once just as good as Spider-Man's other core villains. He was once on the same level as Electro, Rhino, or Sandman.

    I came to a strange conclusion. Shocker is like the Boba Fett of Spider-Man villains. While certainly not remotely as popular as Boba Fett, I couldn't help but note some similarities: he's a role that's been used only a bit DESPITE his beginnings being very early on (Boba has very little screen time), he's relegated to background in later ones (Boba's really only a glorified extra in the OT), often goes out like a chump (Boba in ROTJ) but was a sincere threat once (unlike Boba now), and most of all relies on the "cool factor" of his costume and weapons (the essence of Boba). Because let's be honest, he just looks cool. He doesn't offer that much to a story beyond petty thief, henchmen, or hired goon that robs banks or commits heists, but what he does offer ...superficial though it may be...are awesome fight scenes. And I think that's largely why you see him intro a lot of books with a quickly thwarted get-rich-quick scheme, he's practically always a boss fight in nearly every Spider-Man video game, or he step in just briefly during a random ensemble fight. His fight scenes are where he shines more than he'll ever succeed in leading the plot of an issue. He's the essence of fun but relatively simple and limited in the written execution. But what's sad is he COULD be a lot more. I like that you touched on the fact that he's got to be a low-key genius...but what's ALWAYS bothered me about that is how nothing was every done with that and it's never been addressed since his debut. Nobody ever used that he's CLEARLY got to be among the most brilliant engineers out there. Get this guy the same resources Tony Stark had...what could he make? The dude made those gauntlets...IN PRISION! "Herman Schultz built these in JAIL...from SCRAPS!" I hate that NOBODY ever ran with his intelligence. In fact, they did just the opposite and portrayed him as, frankly, kind of below average intelligence more often than not. It's almost as if his intellect established in the first issue was just completely forgotten. What I didn't know is how you can track through his appearances a running trend of him actually learning from past mistakes...something many villains DON'T do. So I suppose one could argue that's something being done with his intelligence even if subtle. Another thing I never knew about Shocker is the growing sort of insecurity he has after being defeated so many times. That's actually pretty cool, but it does come at the cost of him being an actual threat and is likely what led to his downfall as a serious character. But it is cool to see a time where Shocker indeed was an actual threat. I've always loved Shocker and felt he deserved more spotlight. He's got more potential that he's ever really given and honestly, the near PTSD angle they started to run with isn't a bad start. Now if they could do that AND retain him still being dangerous...I'd buy into that in a New York minute. Give this guy his Kraven's Last Hunt! When you really consider it though, the fact that Shocker only has a handful of appearances despite being made in literally the golden age of Spider-Man...but people still remember and know of him...that's really telling. Something about him struck a cord with people. He's an untapped goldmine of potential. How about he's so brilliant...he's actually bored and, because of this, became a kleptomaniac. It made him feel alive and he'd actually PLAY dumb because he LIKED the chase and challenge. And before he knew it, things just went out of control and escalated to a level he couldn't turn back from.
