Quick question from someone who hasn't watched any other Costumes Tier List videos. What does S stand for, and why is it ranked higher than A?
What an awesome comment to read, thank you very much. I completely agree and didn't even realize that was what I was doing. I just want to talk about comics and stuff without trying to worry about the algorithm too much and trying to predict trends and talk about what everyone else is already doing to death. So thank you very much.
As for the S rank, I don't really know......it's just the high elite rank......probably Super or something
One thing I love esp about the x-men is that their costumes tell a story from the beginning. (Charles picking their outfits at first then Jean asking for/designing graduation fits, Apocalypse, X-Factor etc. etc.) Wish the movies would adapt this aspect a lil more.
That graduation costume may be my least favourite costume in superhero history
The Kitty Pryde rollerblade costume is my choice, but that Angel costume is a close, close second.
@@ericjohnson9623 At least her rollerskate (it was before rollerblades) Sprite costume was intended to be terrible. The Angel costume was not.(as far as we know)
The Neal Adams designed uniform is colored black and white. Unfortunately like most black colored comic book uniforms, it turned blue but it’s easy to see it’s meant to be black & white when you look at the first couple of appearances of this suit.
It was a common practice to use blue to illustrate highlights on a black costume, but many colorist who came after Marvel's initial ones didn't understand that and changed the colors of many costumes from black to complete blue. Most famously, Spider-Man was originally red and black, and the original X-Men team uniforms were black and yellow. Many even argue that Cyclops's graduation costume is supposed to be black, and I'm inclined to agree with them. But yes, Angel's uniform was supposed to be black, and the fact that there were two other members of the Champions with black costumes (Black Widow and Ghost Rider) was the reason Angel's costume was changed to the red one.

I feel pretty similarly about most of the costume rankings. My primary divergence is Angel's red Champions variation of his blue costume, the one with the yellow boots and gloves. It's my absolute favorite Angel costume.
My second and third favorites respectively are his red and white X-Factor and his blue and pink Archangel/ death costumes.
I actually have the figure you used for the pic of his red and white Defenders variant costume.
The wing articulation is absolutely incredible, it's like reaching out and taking the character directly from an X-Men comic that featured it or the episode of the 90s X-Men TAS cartoon he wore it in and holding him in your hands.
When I think about the quality of the Archangel toy I had to play with in the early 90s versus that Marvel Legends Angel figure, it makes me wish I could send it through time to kid me to enjoy actually playing with it.
When he switched back to his blue angel suit while he had his metal wings, the gloves and boots had a gray variant, at least in the 90s X-Men TAS cartoon.
When he regrew his biological feathered wings but still had the blue skin, there's at least one or more issues where he's wearing the red and white Defenders variant.
One of my favorites is X-Men #74. Angel is flying around, enjoying having his biological wings back and ends up in the Morlock tunnels, back where his wings were injured fighting the Marauders.
He runs into the Abomination and the Morlock, Marrow. He takes on Abomination and is losing badly. He's terrified his wings are going to be irreparably injured again and Marrow saves him from Abomination using some of the feather blades from his old metal wings that she keeps with her.
The issue directly addressed the problem I had as a reader about downgrading/ weakening Archangel by reverting his wings, he's less of an asset in battle without his metal wings and he ends up being saved by the remnants of the very things he resented/ hated.
I personally greatly dislike how they try to have it both ways with him now being able to transform between Angel and Archangel. It would be like Wolverine being able to switch between bone claws/ no adamantium and metal claws.
Although, I wouldn't mind the ability to transform for Beast and the Thing.
It used to be that Beast's different forms offered different advantages: human form could blend into a crowd easily, the brief gray furred form had an increased healing factor and the long standing blue furred ape form had increased strength.
A good writer might introduce negative trade-offs for each form:
Human/ base is the weakest of all three,
Gray furred has the increased healing but lacks the strength and stamina of blue furred,
Blue furred has the most overall increases of stamina, agility, dexterity, speed, flexibility and most of all strength but is more feral/ less intellectual and runs the risk of losing control and going berserk.
And the Thing? I just want to see Aunt Petunia's favorite nephew be happy with his wife more than once a year. I can't remember if it's still for only 24 hours or if they're stilling doing the week.
When he had his own comic in the 80s, he had full control and could trigger reversion or transformation at will.
I'd like to see that make a comeback, even become permanent. If he could also access his cosmically amped up rockier form from the 80s, I'd love that, too. That's my favorite version of the Thing.
I'm going to stop myself here, my comic nerd overdrive will just keep going otherwise.

He looks better with the sleek red suit than the blue, but mostly because half the X Men are blue.
This was a very fun video to watch! Would love for you to make this a series with a bunch of other X-Men, but also understand if you want it to be a one time thing

I really don't care about Angel. Sometimes i flat out dislike him. But I can't lie. That AoA design is badass. Dripped out of his mind.
I personally love his first desing but mostly because of Alex Ross art where he looks glorious (like every character)

Angels claim to fame among my friend group is the episode "obsession" it HAS to be a classic ep cus its so damn funny. "Split, broken, FINISHED"
The original design for the X-Factor costumes didnt feature the X on the chest. They all just had a stripe down the middle, so Angel's looked like his red and white "Halo" costume just without the halo. Only time it ever saw print was in the Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Deluxe Edition issue #1.
I ran to the internet to look at that.....yeah Angel's was pretty bland.....cyclops looks kinda cool....like an update of the training outfit. I see Jean is Absent as they weren't ready to reveal her return yet
If I remember correctly, the original 5th member of X-Factor was supposed to be Dazzler, which they teased in the final issue of her ongoing series and started to lay the groundwork for in the Beauty and the Beast miniseries. At that point, they still couldn't bring Jean back since it was a Jim Shooter mandate that Phoenix be punished for destroying the D'Bari's planet, so the 5th member was kept a mystery to drum interest for who Jean's replacement would be. Once Marvel started promoting the upcoming X-Factor series Kurt Busiek's fan idea for reviving Jean without undoing the death of Phoenix made it's way to Roger Stern. Stern told it to John Byrne, who told it to Shooter, and the rest is history.

I appreciate you going with your gut about the Avenging Angel costume, but I'd stick Simonson's original Archangel design in S tier alongside the red/white outfit.(the X-Factor one lost the halo, which is a downgrade, imo) So many forgettable looks though, but I guess that's bound to happen with characters who've been around so long.
Doing some more of these viedoes would be nice. Seeing one on the wasp would be cool.
Oh man.......the wasp has had so many costumes though. It would be a three hour video, lol

Chuck Austen’s run sucked but the Angel design slaps. I honestly think it could be his best look.

I love costume debates and retrospects. Rogues hair is the big one for me. I hate Rogues hair initially, she looks like a skunk. Jim Lee nails it as he did with almost (if not)everyone else. Would love to see more x-men character design videos!
Rogues original looks was a 44 year old smoker fashion executive, lol
Which is funny because Chris Claremont always wrote her on X-Men as though she was only a few years older than Kitty Pryde. I need to re-read some of those early appearances of Rogue as a villain to see if she was always supposed to be that young or if it's something Claremont changed.
@@jimbomba4365 I think she was supposed to be a teenager.....that's how it feels to me.....she just looks older in a lot of the art in my opinion
You're not kidding. Literally every X-Men artist who drew her during the Claremont Era from Paul Smith and Romita Jr. to Silvestri and (especially) Jim Lee made her look the same age as the other adult females on the team, and yet they all talked down to her like she still had a lot of growing up to do. Even Art Adams, who showed her age difference in the first X-Babies appearance by drawing Rogue as a literal baby who had to be carried while everyone else besides Kitty was drawn as a toddler, drew her as a full grown adult the same as Storm, Dazzler, or Psylocke the rest of the time. It bothered me back then, and I still scratch my head today that the artists and writer could never get on the same page with her.
@@HaussmannComics-xd3gn I think because she initially had white side-streaks, artists depicted her as older, even though she was referred to as being a young woman in at least one occassion I can recall.(Yeah, that was "ROM" which imo depicted the seeds of her turn from villainy)
