  • A common problem with many people who have suffered neurologic damage is that the leg has a tendency to rotate outward. This can happen due to muscle tightness, poor muscle control or a combination of the two. Learn more about what might be causing this and some of the best exercises to correct this "walking problem"

Great exercises! For a long time after the stroke, I was told that this is the characteristic gait (with external rotation) of those who have had a stroke. Only recently I worked with a physical therapist who explained what I had to do and gave me the same exercises as the ones in your video. The fact that I also discovered them on your channel strengthens my belief that I will regain a normal gait. Thank you! You're great!

Thanks. While sitting, I observed my non-stroke knee can easily pivot inward, but my stroke knee is resisting about 50% of the way. I'll need to somehow stretch that out. I also noticed that after 9 months since the event, I find it necessary to again do runners-stretches on my stroke calf. Another aspect of the stroke trifecta on my stroke leg is the ongoing lack of strength in the shin muscles that facilitate dorsiflexion. Just sharing. I'm grateful to moving about.

I have quite the track record for this one. I used to longboard for hours on end for miles and miles back in highschool almost every day while also being a doordash/ubereats/instacart driver with all my free time.
SO....... my right leg would constantly be rotated outward to push my longboard and to press the gas pedal for hours and hours working deliveries. I then tore my left hamstring during a season final track meet which gave me a limp. When it healed, i started getting more into gymnastics and martial arts tricking and thats when I really started to notice the problem.
One cannot simply execute a straight flip on a trampoline with one leg rotated 20 degrees out and pushing on the trampoline at an asymmetric angle from the other leg. Muscular imbalances shine clear like deer in headlights in gymnastics and the domino effects from something like this is amplified on trampoline and floor with the more air time you build.
I also developed dancers hip from doing too many twisty taekwondo back kicks. My form of internal snapping hip syndrome is where my iliopsoas tendon is actually stuck out of place on the outer side of my femoral head and only snaps back into place when I move my knee out and up to the same side's shoulder (how convenient, right, it means my hip flexor tendon is out of place unless im in a tuck so i cant stand, jump, or walk evenly/symmetrically), and at around the 30 degree angle mark, I audibly hear the snapping of the tendon over my hip bone.
Then I found this video! Thanks it really helps a lot especially the one where you stand on one leg and then step the nonworking leg up and across. I'm going to get creative and start adding weights and variate the angles and tension points.

This is an excellent question! I would pick on functional movement you want to improve upon in a certain time frame (for example increase single leg standing to 3 seconds). Then work on progressing to that skill (over the course of 4-6 week) ending each session with practicing that skill. The exercises during each sessions should be components of that skill. Any tips for why my left foot turns inward while walking ? I believe it may be due to past ankle injuries I've had but not sure. Could this also be due to my hips being out of alignment ? Thanks :)

I have spastic CP and I use a power wheelchair most of the time. I will be 54 years of age this week. When I am transferring and walking with an anterior Kaye walker about 40 feet. The BIG issue that I have is my right leg is bent and the knee is rotated inward and my right foot is externally rotated. I do wear AFO's everyday. I got new AFO's at the end of 2022. What can I do and try to be able to extend and step all the way through with my right leg and what can I do to correct my foot from so much external rotation? Thank you for your time!

Can a rotated leg cause sciatic pain? My whole right leg is rotating outwards and I have been having buttock pain for many years especially when I sit. Fingers crossed these exercises will help! Thank you Dr.!

Mate 100% externally rotated hips can lead to sciatica. I am the same as you

@GoogleSpoogle been doing these and other internal rotating exercises and there is some improvement. After 40 minutes driving my butt hurts as much as ever but it kicks in later. Usually felt pain after 5 max 10 min driving now I start feeling it after 20-25 min. I must be doing something right.

    Dear Ma'am Tara Tobias
I am a spinal cord injury patient of 17 years and this prolonged years of injury caused my hip to stay in an external rotation state so much so as to cause pain when I physically try to induce internal rotation. This has also caused me spasticity for which my right side ankle gets inverted whenever I try to stand. The more a straighten up the more it gets inverted.
Please help me with some exercises that can be done while sitting up to internally rotate the hip so that I can correct my ankle inversion.

This is an interesting video as my issue seems to be the opposite twisted leg problem (cerebral palsy, spastic, both legs but right leg more affected than left.) I stand up from squat or sitting naturally with my knees together feet out (like your yoga block demonstration) so I am trying to learn the opposite movement to this demonstration. My right leg is internally twisted, knee facing in while my right foot collapses in and rotates out to the side. If I straighten the right leg so the knee faces out straight, my right foot is really pointing out to the side.

How often should this routine be done if your lack of rotation in hip impingement is severe?

Ma'am. I have one flat foot and the same leg(with the flat foot) is externally rotated. Chronically tight IT band and Quadratus Lumborum.
