  • Are you wondering if one leg is longer than the other? You can do this simple leg length discrepancy test at home without any expensive tools. Just grab a ruler, cutting board, or a book!
In this video Matt shows you how to test for a leg length discrepancy. He explains training modifications if you have a true structural leg length difference. He explains how to fix a functional leg length difference with proper training strategies. To make sure you train your body properly, you want to first confirm that you actually have a true structural leg length discrepancy and not just a functional leg length discrepancy.
Once you know what you're dealing with, you can make sure to train your body to maintain symmetry and symmetrical function in your body as best you can!

OMG I just laughed out loud! I totally love the end thank you for the humor and the sarcasm !
      Love it 😂
      Here’s my question
So my left side is pulled up higher.
The exercise standing on the step I’m letting the other leg hang, do you recommend doing it on both sides or just the one side??
Also my left hip is pulled up higher and rotated forward however I notice on the right side my back muscles on the right side of my vertebrae are more pronounced and developed, I am assuming this happened because when I was bedridden for two months straight I would try to only pull myself up on the right side propping myself up on my right elbow and I feel like I was constantly developing that right side but then I am wondering if the left hip being higher is simply from an injury I had as a kid that has shown up in Xrays for years
Thank you so much for your time and your energy
It’s such a relief to find some thing that you want to watch and settle on one thing versus constantly searching and bouncing back-and-forth to multiple people thus feeling overwhelmed and scattered.
      🙏🏼

Very VALUABLE Video!! - Most DEFINITELY, It needs a SUBTITLE! - Embedded or burned SUBS within a Video are NOT editable. UA-cam provided, and automated Subtitles are also VERY »BAD to translate. Due to many factors like: »no Punctuation, Pronunciation, mumbling, fast-talk, Audio/Sound etc..« ---» A »» SOLID, manually added SUBTITLE / TRANSCRIPTION-Text, on the other hand, would give this great Video even more depth. That way, MORE international viewers would/could join in - since they would/could translate to their native mother-tongue »the CORRECT way. ---» Subsequence (later) modifications (adjustments) can still be made, right!? So, WHY waiting? - Any chance of doing so?
      .
Again, the displayed one is NOT editable! Hence: Very bad to translate.

I'm a licensed massage therapist. I see functional leg length discrepancies all the time. They can be caused by a spinal reflex issue as well, but Matt is spot on here. Very good description of what is going on in these situations. It is so rare to find "trainers" who really understand what is happening and problem solve appropriately. I'm a huge fan of Upright Health! Thank you!

I have been in chronic, progressive, referred pain for almost 5 years now (39 y/o M). The pain manifests in my L5/Sacral region but I have never significantly injured my back, the best diagnosis I have received to date is an S1 impingement secondary to SI joint hyper-rotation. I can’t seem to find a practitioner of any sort who will legitimately and proactively help!!!

@@LiMitZplus No. The closest I have to a definitive diagnosis to date is an S1 nerve imp secondary to spinal stenosis as indicated by MRI however it is not believed to be the primary cause. During my initial experience exactly 5 years ago it was eventually ruled a SI issue in which I was found to have a discrepancy of +1.75” LL...which was promptly relieved, as was All associated pain, temporarily of course.

Me too. Leg length discrepancy started in my pre-teens maybe. Was told at 24 that one leg was shorter and to put .25 lift on my shoes.
In my 40's I was told that the discrepancy was functional owing to a fall in childhood.
Am now 77 and am in week 6 of my first experience with sciatica on the alleged short side.
A nightmare of pain and weakness in the leg that has caused at least 10 serious falls.
This is the FIRST advice I've ever found to tell the difference between a true discrepancy due to bones (have never seen proof of this) and functional, which has always made more sense to me.
Hopefully, when I heal from this episode of sciatica, I can start exercising again to avoid this pain in the future.

Very interesting! I have been dealing with SI joint pain and QL pain for a year now and have been told that it is due to my tilted pelvis and leg discrepancy. I have been working on strengthening the glutes and core muscles with clams, bridges etc. for quite some time now and stopped doing rdls en lunges because it made the pain worse. But still to this day I dont know wether I really have a structual leg discrepancy or if the tight back and hip muscles are causing it. I will do this test for sure! I am very curious! Thank you!

      @maryam1065 6 місяців тому

@@Zoro_1005Yes I did and after a year of trying a lot of stuff it is finally starting to reduce my pain! Instead of weight exercises I switched to banded glute exercises (clamshells, hydrants, leg lifts) and lots and lots of bridges in combination with lower core exercises to engage the deeper core muscles (the ones you feel when you cough that's always a good guideline). On top of that I try to conciously engage my lower core muscles when standing or walking to take pressure of my lower back, it was quite strange at first, but after a while my brain kinda started remembering and I don't have to think about it as often. I stopped any single leg exercises and hip rotation exercises for now because it puts too much pressure on my SI/hip. Oh ja one morw thing, try to prevent stretches or movements that put your spine in an extended C curve, I did that wrong for many many months 😅 I really hope this helps!

I definitely have a functional leg length discrepancy and it can be so painful and has really messed up my running and ability to play sports properly. My right side is the side that's lower and everyday I have to deal with an ultra tight right piriformis and right QL. I went to countless physios and was told to stretch but it always comes back. To fix this I should focus on strengthening the high side or the low side? Also how long would you say it would take to fix this? A chiropractor will reset your hip. Sounds like it is set in a posterior tilt with external rotation. This stresses the piriformis and QL as the lower back becomes shortened and the piriformis is overworked. Once the hip has been corrected then do exercises to build up your glute medius and your internal rotators as well as lower abdominal strengthening- core work

I have the same ASIS asymmetry. And I can't, for the life of me, figure out if it's because one leg is longer or because my hips are jacked up. Or both.
All of the "true leg length" measurement videos I find are completely invalid, because they measure from the ASIS (which, if higher or lower due to hip rotation would throw off the "true leg length" measurement.)
Every time I try to measure my legs myself, one of my lower legs always comes out longer than the other, but it's basically impossible to do accurately by yourself.
The method in this video makes a lot of sense, but even still, it's hard to do with precision.

@@scottk1525 Yes well my point is that for some people, their anatomical reference position stance will be with a tilted pelvis. Which means you cannot use the height of the knees to make any inferences about femur/tibia length.

A shorter leg can be an incorrect diagnosis, whereas the shortness is sometimes caused by a less- formed torso on that side.

    Hello 👋 I need help
I had an accident some years ago that made my leg length unequal, it hurts to walk for so long. What should I do?

If you’re doing the test to see if you have a leg longer than the other then what if you can’t tell if you’re 100% straight on the mat like maybe my heels are lined up but what if my body is not at a 90° angle. I’m worried if I’m not perfectly parallel with the edge of the mat on the side or if my body is so crooked I notice even when I lay down it slightly tilted to the right because I had pulled myself up on the right side multiple multiple times a day for two months and didn’t pull myself up on the left side
And if there was an injury when I was younger and the hip got jammed up which is visible from the x-ray, is it possible that someone did not completely heal and it stayed jammed up therefore impossible to fix and then would I train just like someone with a longer leg problem? Because I noticed when I try to do certain things with my feet together it jams up and hurts but I don’t think I was necessarily born with one leg longer than the other

Thank you.. i have left leg discrepancy which my good leg was operated on when i was a child. The uk doctor put 6 staples wrongly inside my leg. He forgot about me. Then he tried to remove the staples and couldnt. So he lied on my medical record that he removed the staples successfully.
I still have the staples in my good right leg.
The right leg continued to grow and the 6 staples that were meant to stop my leg growing failed to stop the growth of my leg.
As a young adult another doctor performed wedge resection which was to cut out the extra bone.
I still have left leg discrepancy. I am 56 years old now and the causation of that first operation at age 11 Epysodesis which was perfomed wrongly. ( i done research.. the staples were supose to be placed in my leg criss-cross. The uk doctor didnt put the staples criss-cross he put them one under the other)
I'm now in consent pain 24/7 with osteoarthritis in both legs from my spine to my ankles, have spinal stenosis, have compressed nerves, have bulgin disk, have chonic sciatica. And both my legs gives away while i walk, i could only stand for less than 2 minutes befor the extreme pain in my groin and right leg whereby my whole right leg goes numb and i cant feel the ground. I do exercises every single day so that im not crippled forever. I am an artist i paint well and was at the height in my career when i became disabled severely with the sciatica then all else followed. Only when i lay on my belly the pains sometimes stops.
My kneecap in my right leg feels lose and is extremely painful. But...... i do all your exercises for my knees, hips and my discrepancy leg.
And other exercises.... and i can make myself a cheese sandwich before my leg gives away from beneath me also the time lengthened to 4 minutes before the severe pain kicks in. Whereby i sit down before i fall down. And put my leg up higher than my bum on a chair with cushion to wait out the pain.
Im allergic to all medications and painkillers. So i use Agesal cream and a hot water bottle for the pains. And eat cherries for the osteoarthritis pain which helps....
The orthapeadic wanted to remove my knees and i told them no. That i dont want them to touch my legs ever again. I have rheumatoid arthritist in my fingers and hands. But i still paint as i love painting😊 i have carpal tunnel in both wrists and damaged ulnar nerves from using the crutches which i swap for 2 walking sticks. Now i have a torn ligament in my right elbow. But i still exercised it and my body and my legs. I think the staples are resting on my nerves causing me all this pains throughout my whole body.
Thank you for reading this. And thank you for your videos they give me hope. As i still want to heal...😊

Left leg 2cm is shorter because of bone shorter. (Femur) can I use extra 2cm heel lift inside or bottom of the shoe for equality among short and long length leg. Thanking you. I, Rouf from Bangladesh.

So basically if the board is slanted its a discrepancy and if it’s level it’s a functional discrepancy????? I just want to be sure I got it right.

My right leg is shorter than my left (muscle wise, not bone). I started wearing prescribed orthopedic insoles where the right one has a 0.5cm height on the heel. I can definitely feel pain kicking in my thigh and hip when walking. The outside muscle of my thigh and the back of my hip. The packaging for my insoles says to wear them 10-60mins 3-5 days a week. Hopefully I won't have to wear them for too long. I've been doing physical therapy for leg length discrepancy for 2.5 months now and I hope my leg won't be too short anymore because it's affecting my dance training.

And would have been working as a Nursery nurse or became a famous and rich Artist 😊 im on google. I can paint everything and i have many fans of my artworks. I can donate an artwork to you. 😊
