I remember the first time I visited America, I assumed that Glenn Beck was a liberal comedian doing a satirical impression of a conservatives nutcase. I was somewhat taken aback when the locals told me he was for real.

I disagree. It's got far worse. Now there's OAN, a "news" broadcaster so unhinged and borderline fascist that it makes Fox look like a paragon of stable, nuanced reporting. It's genuinely hideous.

Bedrinonen Absolutely not. We have to pay for a TV licence for an unbiased news channel. For instance on of BBC's own Jimmy Saville was found out to be a kiddy-fiddler and BBC covered it. DO you think Fox would ever own up to and not try to cover up having a pedophile as a previous member of their staff? I think not. If you've never been to the UK or travelled out side of America I would certainly not judge the Media. You know the Invasion of Russia into the Ukraine? that wasn't even covered in American news! How warped is that?!

@@krashd All of the scenarios in those films/books could happen _anywhere._ There is no irony, only possiblity.
Right now, the United States looks to be reaching a point where _exactly_ that kind of nightmare could begin. People have begun to push back. Now we have to wait and see how hard _they_ will be pushed back and how violently.
The UK is nowhere _near_ as close to unrest, or to the dangers that the US now faces. But that does not mean it could not happen here. CCTV cameras aren't the issue though. The issue is whether or not people start buying the bullshit the way many Americans have. A grip on reality, even if we don't particularly _like_ that reality, is what's important. The minute we start swallowing the bullshit without comment (or even with ecstatic cheers, à la the US) is when we'll be screwed.

WTF is that Glenn Beck all about and how did he ever feature on a mainstream channel, the guy is a idiot that should be locked up and never allowed to speak again, the same would apply to Sean Hannity and Bill O'reilly.
I have watched some of their shows and I was shocked at the distaste for minorities, liberals, women, anti war activists and anyone else who dare challenge the right wing POV. +Salacious Candy - I'm surprised that people outside of America do not realize that these morons are not TV News anchors. We have actual TV News channels with real news, weather, etc.
These creeps have late night TV shows meant strictly to shock everyone..
Americans think they are morons too. Those who watch them , do so for entertainment, and not because they actually believe them to be doing the actual news. These morons don't even believe what is coming out of their own mouths, they do these rants for money and ratings. No one should ever take them seriously.

I love the country singer who goes on about how we'd all be speaking German under the flag of Japan (?) if it wasn't for the lord and "the man." I had no idea Glenn Beck's viewers were such fans of "the man." They must love Obama and his government, then. Oh, wait, "the man" isn't the black man. Got it. This is nuclear level stupidity, right here.

Thomas Frank (_What's the Matter with Kansas?_) dissects that same Glenn Beck segment in his book talk for _Pity the Billionaire_. This inversion of Glenn Beck taking a leftwing image (the angry anchor from _Network_ and twisting it into an insane rightwing version is nothing new. Ayn Rand did essentially the exact same with _Fountainhead_, which is an inverted (or perverted) version of early 20th century workers' novels.
Similarly, fascists are trying to actually trying to "dispose" of the Nazi legacy by claiming (with a somewhat straight face even) that "National Socialists" were, you guessed it, "socialists" and therefore the political left is to blame for the Holocaust.
There is no logical end to this tactic, except the rise of fascism which is exactly what we're seeing all over the Western world. One point of disagreement with Brooker though: Beck and his ilk are not insane, ridiculous or stupid. They are calculating, sophisticated and rotten to the core.
