Newswipe with Charlie Brooker - Season 1 Episode 6

  • Brooker begins with a history of graphical aids in news broadcasts and their current status as garish, CGI animations rather than displays of useful information - particularly during events such as elections. In the "This Week in Bullshit" segment, Brooker covers the reaction to comments made by Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad during the Durban Review Conference, as well as a lengthy section on the 2009 United Kingdom Budget. In other pieces which look into the dwindling influence of traditional newspapers, Peter Oborne discusses the relationship between the media and government in the UK, while Nick Davies (author of Flat Earth News) illustrates the increased use of the "dark arts" of computer hacking, phone tapping and bribery by Fleet Street journalists to gain evidence of ill-behaviour in government.

    The delicious irony is that 'I Dreamed a Dream' is actually one of the most depressing songs in existence, sung by a woman forced into prostitution by an unfair and judgemental society in order to support her young child. She eventually catches TB and dies in squalor thanks to the hypocrisy of the middle and upper classes who infect and destroy her once hopeful life...

    Brooker’s on point with the Susan Boyle thing. The whole thing just feels like a lot of rich people with plastic surgery being shocked that the lower class can actually sing, and it stinks of patronisation. It’s at no fault to her, but it ended up with everyone collectively looking down on someone who isn’t rich or sexy and celebrating her so they can feel like a good person. She deserves praise, not patronisation.

    • @na7371
      @na7371 9 років тому +1

      ***** Ah, no, not that one. The Justice song starts around 16:05; I was asking for the one that starts a minute later - right after Valentine ends, in fact. When Brooker talks about Paul Staines, Guido Fawkes, and all that.
      But thank you nonetheless for giving me the name of the other song - I never really paid attention to it when seeing this episode the first time, but having heard the whole three minutes, I quite like it. ^_^ So thanks.
      If anyone has any idea what the other piece of music is called, though - the orchestral and really rather dramatic one that starts right after Valentine - I would appreciate it lots.

    • @na7371
      @na7371 9 років тому +4

      Ah, never mind - I did manage to find the piece, through a Spotify playlist of music used for his Screenwipe and Newswipe series. The information is no longer needed. ^_^
      Incidentally, if anyone happens to be curious - it is Capsule in Space, composed by John Barry for the soundtrack to the James Bond film, You Only Live Twice. UA-cam also calls it Space March, apparently.

    Tony Benn, a much-loved and widely lauded retired, Labour politician. He's often seen as representing old-Labour type values and seen as symbolic of the type of honourable politician that is seldom found among MPs today. If you've watched the episode where the G20 protests were covered, he was the guy who urged the news channel to show some of the speeches that were made by the various protesting groups.

      Well...yes. All English words are British, but not all British words are English. "Heddlu" comes to mind. Not being a speaker, I have no idea of the correct pronunciation, but it is less daunting than "Garda" (which isn't British), or "Police", which is English (and therefore British). (Wales is in Britain...hence my choice of example because it provides mild amusement when I see it on the force's motor vehicles. A bit like the Russian "HOMO" on the back of Special Forces kits. Whether Scottish Gaelic is considered "British" would make this comment too complicated.)
